Reviews of Cheng's @ 27
Have been patronizing this restaurant a few times, comfort home cooked food.
Tried new dishes like these Assam pig trotters. Something different an taste like mild curry.
Found the samba prawns highlight off the day!
Food are pretty tasty but overpriced. Ordered the crispy chicken chop rice with curry. Chicken chop was crispy and curry was watery and delicious. There are only 3 choices for one person set meal when I patronize with me and myself. Come in a group and you can enjoy more varieties of food on their ale-carte menu.
Nice foods and friendly staffs. Local feel.
I went at about 7 pm on Monday and a few dishes are not available. For steam fish dishes, you need to pre-order. :(
On a hot evening, you can sweat a bit if you sit far from the fan.
If you can call something a heritage restaurant this is it. Came with a local foodie for some Hainanese food. And I didn't regret it. Had the crispy chicken cutlet with curry and a slice of pandan cake. And sampled their artisan Kaya which they had jars of for sale. Thomas and Dawn were wonderful hosts. It's on a quiet street in Tiong Bahru away from all the hustle and bustle. I will come back and eat other things on the menu for sure. Highly recommended.
Good home style cooking. Large portions served, decent prices. Undercover seating, so no aircon. Friendly neighbourly service.
Great place for lunch and dinner. Ginger fried chicken is one of the best dishes. Visitors can never go wrong with their creative interpretations of Pandan cake. Though the price can be on the high side, staffs are warm and welcoming, worth coming back again and again.
We were walking along yong siak street trying to look for a quick lunch and came across this coffee shop. One look and you think it’s probably Tze Char coffee shop.
Surprised by the home cooked style and good quality dishes. The only trade off is price . It’s about $15.00 per main dish and so if you order some sides plus drinks , it’s works out to be about $15 per pax ( assuming 4 pax )
Very heartwarming meal : feels like ah Ma just cooked it and scooped it right out of the wok to serve you with hot piping steaming hot white rice . Highly recommended dishes : deep fried chicken chop with vinegarish sauce, kai lan with oyster sauce , stir fried fish with ginger slices. Home made lemonade is a Must to quench your thirst . So if you are running along TIong Bahru, and are happy to spend about $10-15 lunch per pax, give it a try!
If you’re after a lovely home-cooked meal, this is definitely the place. Gives off a nice neighbourhood vibe in Tiong Bahru with families or groups of aunties eating here. Food is good with lots of ingredients, though the portion is smaller than the usual tze char.
Had pig trotter bee hoon and salted vegetable duck soup. They are excellent not too salty or oily, exactly like home-cooked food. The crockery used adds to the homey atmosphere. Will be back to try other dishes.
Excellent authentic experience. In unpretentious surroundings the food is great served Very hot straight from the wok. I was initially a little
Worried about the no prices on the menu but the great host mentioned that for two people most dishes are between $12-15. And when our bill cane we ate like kings and had a lovely Erdinger beer and it was just over $60. DEFINITELY have the Chrispy chicken. It’s what they are known for and absolutely delicious. It’s got a mix of locals and tourists who have found a great place.
Had a filling lunch here and took away a whole gula melaka chiffon cake for tea. It is well worth the $40 and a great contrast from the staple Bengawan Solo that Singaporeans are used to.
Heat your tall slice up to enjoy a delightfully airy and warm chiffon cake that is layered with pandan and palm sugar. I’ve found a gem in Tiong Bahru and I’m definitely heading back for more 🤩
Nice and rare food which you couldn’t get to eat at any other places in Singapore. Visit website to find out more and place order in advance be it whether to dine in or take away. You can order through foodpanda, grabfood or deliveroo as well. Owner & staffs are friendly.
DO TAKE NOTE THAT SHOP IS CLOSE ON TUESDAY!

A real good local HaiNan style restaurant! Don’t miss the ginger chicken we keep ordering 4 times ! Yes 4 times !
The portion was good, and I love their Chicken chop curry rice. Shiokicilious.
The food is amazing and the staff were welcome.
They have baught out all the flavour with just simple home-cooking meal. It would be great to enjoy a meal here with your family and friends. The dish "Crispy Chicken w Ginger" is def my fav
Highly recommanded
Gula melaka Tapioca kuih did not have an ounce of tapioca taste. All you taste is Gula melaka. I love tapioca so very disappointing. Bengawan solo at least gives you tapioca.
Everything here is good! Location with lots of free parking on weekends, quick service, lots of seats. Dishes don't have a price on the menu but are around $12-15 each which may surprise some folks. But this is worth it. Fast and delicious
Good food in a coffee shop setting. Favorite dishes here includes Hainanese Pork Chop, Salted Vegetable Duck Soup and Shrimp Paste, Minced Meat Long Beans. Do not expect coffee shop prices though. This is not a typical coffee shop but those looking for quality food will not be disappointed.
Overpriced for simple home cooked food. $12 for an egg dish?! Price not displayed so we thought just try it out. 3 dishes ended up with a $40++ bill. Not going back for sure. Food is not bad though.
Must leave stomach for their cake. The duck and salted vegetable soup is good too. Had it the first time today. All other dishes are very home-cooking taste. Really good meal.
Chengs is amazing! One of the first restaurants we went to when we moved to SG 6 years ago and We still go at least 2x a month. We recommend this place to everyone and take all visitors to Chengs. Everything on the menu is great but the ginger chicken and cake are heavenly. The family that own it are so friendly and inviting and treat us like an extension of their family. We have had many gatherings at Chengs, including a baby shower. GO TO CHENGS!!!!
Another great Singaporean restaurant with authentic food which is spicy, tasty and yummy. Highly recommended for lunch. Prices are good as are price of drinks.
Looks like a hawker / average local coffee shop, but has the pricetag of a hipster cafes if not more expensive! The dishes were all very tasty but i was still surprised of the bill.
Great Hainan cuisine restaurant with award winning cake. Ginger crispy chicken is excellent, prawn fritters are ok, great fried rice and veg. Very friendly!
Really chill place! Tried the lemongrass drink and crispy ginger chicken. Recommend it if you're in the area...do try their Chiffon cakes! ;)
Nice cold cut white pork belle n many foodie.
They specialise gula melaka siffon cake n kaya so far best in town..
Had a good lunch here.. food taste really good with good portion. Price is on the higher side but it was worth it. Will surely go back if I have time.
Heavenly gula melaka chiffon cake (no refined table sugar!!) - so soft, pillowy and moist. Made authentically with wholesome consciousness - what a gem!
Will always get a big slice of their gula melaka chiffon cake and a jar of kaya to go when i drop by. Highly recommend to try these items if you are in the area.
Hainanese style zhi char. It's the first for me and the taste is great. Price is a little bit ex but service and environment are great. Would recommend others to give it a try.
Great place, fresh ingredients and produce had been served everyday. Small menu but they made everything excellent.
Very hospitable owner. Tried the kueh and chiffon cake. Nice place for snacks just before closing.
Pleasant meal, nice local dishes. Friendly staff, keen to recommend food which was very helpful. Would recommend.
Good simple local food. Relaxed and quiet environment. Try the salted green mustard duck soup.
The food is great. The belachan was not spicy. Great ambience. Highly recommended.
White pork, brocolli with gingko nuts and sweet and sour fish especially recommended
Menu choices are limited. But food here is delicious.
Chicken chop is not impressive. Maybe other meals are better.
Great salted mustard duck soup and Gula Melaka Pandan chiffon cake!
food taste okay only. a little too overprice though
Nice food
Best Hainanese foods
Currently closed for renovations...
Cozy!
Highly recommended!!
Food is good
I gave it five stars without considering the price. I didn't consider the price because this meal was a treat from a friend.
The food was delicious and well-cooked. Whether it was the main course, the sides, or the dessert, I was very satisfied. In fact, dining here isn't just about the food; it's also about the flavor of the 1960s...
I bought a pandan cake based on James's recommendation, and it was absolutely delicious.
The owner was also very helpful in introducing and recommending it to us.
After eating brunch at Tiong Bahru, I walked leisurely in this cute neighborhood. I was attracted by a charming aroma in the air. I followed the aroma and came to Cheng’s 27. It turned out that the aroma was freshly baked Gula Melaka chiffon cake. There were full of chiffon cakes on the table. I bought a piece of the store’s signature chiffon cake and went to the Singapore Botanic Gardens for a picnic to taste!
We boldly opened the cake with our hands and enjoyed it. We were amazed by the coconut aroma and moist texture of the cake! It was a delicious taste that we will never forget during our picnic that day!
This kind of unplanned surprise is the best reward in the journey!
