Reviews of Chuan Ji Hainanese Bakery
“It’s like eating durian.”
That was the feedback I received when I was ordering the durian mooncake for the first time and that was exactly what I savoured, “IT IS LIKE EATING DURIAN!”
Naturally sweet, creamy, solid tasting durian paired seamlessly with soft textured snow skin. *closes eyes* Mmmm..
I ate 2 durian mooncakes in a single day and I had to make a second purchase. It’s really too good.
Really glad that they do delivery too! Check out the website if you are going to self collect. There is a map to show a “drive thru” hassle free way for self collection.
The pork chops rice is sooo good 😋 unlike anywhere else, theirs is tender, and little juicy, goes very well with the brown sauce.
We also had the only available on Saturday curry chicken, which was quite nice too.
Kaya butter toast, coffee were all great. Our first time trying the Hainanese mooncake, it's sth very different, acceptable to us, will have it again.
Ondeh Ondeh is kinda average, too thick skin and huge 😅
Overall good experience, and friendly service... Will be back again 😁
The Bright Star in the otherwise sad mall
Coffee, pork chop , beef stew, ondeh, KO swee were good.
The Flaky Cake is EXCELLENT. The sambal is also very spicy and good
Boss Suan is very friendly and hospitable.
This was a wonderful find. A small, hole in the wall eatery serving up deliciously homely fare. We tried the pork chop, beef stew, ondeh ondeh and kaya toast and all were very good. The ondeh ondeh was made to order and served to us warm! The coffee was smooth and velvety and my husband really enjoyed it too.
Located inside the mall is this nice cosy cafe. The owner is very friendly and hospitable, certainly made our visit more memorable.
The food was delicious too. We had ordered the beef stew, pork chop, kaya toast, coffee and ondeh ondeh and none disappoint. The hot ondeh ondeh was especially nice.
I was extremely lucky to have been gifted with a jar of Chuan Ji’s kaya. Have never been really crazy for Kaya since I’ve always find it too sweet but this one is amazing! Not too sweet and very light on the palate, doesn’t feel overbearing at all! I almost finished the whole jar in one sitting.. very dangerous! But thanks to that first jar, I ordered 10 more jars to share with my friends and family, while indulging in more at home! I’m going to be a repeat customer!
Warm welcoming ambience. Food is fresh and yummy. The Teh C and Kopi C is delicious!! Will come for pork chop and beef stew soon
Nice environment, hidden in MacPherson Mall. Heritage Hainanese Su Yan Biscuit or some names it as Hainanese mooncake. The Hainanese Su Yan Biscuit is very different from the common Tao Sar Biah we are familiar with- so not easy to compare. Older generations of Hainanese would like it definitely. And I hope younger generation Singaporeans and foreigners alike will be able to appreciate it and support it, so that it is preserved/ conserved in Singapore!
The chicken chop tastes homely- like fresh from your mum's kitchen! Reasonable price. The Teh C that I ordered has standard- despite the minimal price charged!
Like the authenticity, quality of food and reasonbly price for all of it. Thanks Suan Chong 👍
Super friendly and the ondeh was heavenly! Bought for takeaway during lunch and ate after dinner as dessert, the centre was still gooey unlike most other sellers' rock hard middle. Pork chop rice is a tad expensive, but taste good. Could do away with the fries and heap more of the salad instead, but that's my personal preference.
I was running some errands in the area and just happened to find this place while scanning Google maps, and I'm glad I dropped by! It's a small, unassuming space tucked away in Macpherson Mall with a short menu (mainly beef stew, pork chop, or chicken chop rice) and some kuehs and pastries available on hand. I had the chicken chop rice and was amazed by how flavourful the chicken was – crispy yet tender and well-seasoned. The accompanying potato wedges were fluffy, crisp and a great side, but if you're hungry or a large eater, I'd recommend adding on extra rice! The owners were also friendly and welcoming, and you could tell that they'd cultivated warm relationships with the regulars there.
I'll be sure to stop by to try their pastries the next time! Am eyeing the mooncakes for sure.
It was the weekend lunch period and our order took quite a while to arrive. Only after 22 minutes was the pork chop rice served followed by the beef stew 27 minutes later.
On first look, the portions were really tiny and insufficient. Barely a tiny bowl of rice, coupled with 10 pieces of fries and a palm sized pork chop accompanied with tomato sauce. Taste wise, the pork chop rice was decent but it was nothing fantastic to shout about.
The beef stew, on the other hand, had potatoes, carrots, onions, celery and tender beef chunks swimming in the mildly savory gravy. After subsequent spoonfuls, the gravy tasted rather bland and bitter; which wasn't a very pleasant stew to have.
Overall, the culinary experience was solely underwhelming; we were only 40% filled up and were craving for more food to fill up our bellies. Great to try for the first time but would not visit again.
Located near the entrance of Macpherson Mall, Chuan Ji is a cozy cafe that serves mouthwatering Hainanese Delicacies that goes down well with both their coffee and and tea that I tried. A family run business, the owner Chong Suan is very friendly, funny and hospitable. If you're reading this, thanks for your hospitality!
Cosy cafe in a rather empty mall. It has limited seating, but when I went during tea time, it was easy to find a table. My kopi was great, different taste from the usual toast box/ya kun. Tried the Hainanese flaky biscuit, very unique taste. Ondeh ondeh was really good, it came freshly made and warm. Will definitely order the ondeh ondeh the next time I visit!
My friend and I enjoyed the food at ChuanJi. Boss Suan Chong responded personally to my reservation request and attended to our orders. Place is homely and cosy with a lot of friendly conversations between owners and diners. Thank you for the delicious food and friendship.
Flakey biscuit didn't disappoint! Had a very special combination of flavours in there. Will go back again. 😉
Quality food! The food are fried very well — not oily and very crispy. The taste of their homemade sauce is very savoury and unique, which makes you crave for more. Owner is very friendly too :) Highly recommended!!!
The kueh kosui and ondeh ondeh really very nice, very fresh. The friendly boss said it’s order to make. Definitely will be back to try other dishes. The kueh kueh so much better than some big brands.
Traditional hainanese food. Friendly owner.
They are relocating so are temporarily closed now.
Hope new location will be more accessible & nearer for me
This is where you'll find authentic Hainanese cuisine the way your mum would cook it. Very affordable.
Both the food and service are excellent! All the dishes are delicious, with portions that are just right, leaving room for sides and desserts.
Beef stew and pork chop is very good! Friendly boss, nice and cozy. Authentic hainanese food.
A very cozy cafe with great beef stew and hainanese chicken/pork rice. The snacks and tea is awesome too. Will be back again
Used the wrong account unfortunately to leave this review. >.< Excellent pork chops though, very cosy li'l happening spot in an otherwise empty Macpherson Mall. - Daryl
Overhyped place. Tasted the pork chop rice, nothing to shout about. Its just decent that's all.
Owner's are friendly. Food reminds me of home cooked food 家常菜。Although no fanfare, but it warms the heart.
Best lunch time food and best services selling very unique hainanese Bakery products highly recommend
Best ondeh ondeh, delicious curry puff, tender beef stewed and friendly staff.
