Reviews of Kheng Nam Lee Teochew Porridge
Used to patronize this shop frequently many years back and my 1st visit back after Covid.
There were a decent variety of the typical, standard teochew porridge dishes that all looks very appetizing to order.
Eventually, ordered a spinach, hairy gourd, soy sauce chicken wings and a slice of fish with 2 porridge and only cost $18+ for 2 person which is fairly cheap and reasonable as dish portion for both vegetables were generous.
However to my dismay, I thought their porridge was not well-cooked as I can still bite hard grains of the rice unlike what a teochew porridge texture should be.
I approached the counter staff to share with apologies that the porridge dun seems well cooked enough and can I exchange for rice instead. The lady was nice and no questions asked, had another counter staff to serve me the rice while she checked and tasted the porridge but did not answer me if tat’s their porridge is not cooked fully.
Back at my table, I ate the rice and it also had abit of the hard grainy texture and realised their rice they used maybe a lower grade hence this texture as it’s not fragrant too when cooked.
There were other customers as well and seems no issue with the porridge but i thought that I’m not fussy but my expectation for a teochew porridge, the porridge should be watery, and the bites of the rice grain is soft. ( or maybe just so happened, our scoops of porridge was still in the midst of cooking) However, still appreciate their good service to give me another 2 bowls of rice but felt wasteful as the porridge left untouched.
Overall, dishes taste ok but a tad bland and could be due to the past reviews of their dishes being salty.
*didn’t take pictures of the dishes as I was quite disheartened after I tasted the porridge.
Good Teochew Porridge experience! Porridge was comforting, and the dishes were solid. Highlight was the delicious large pig intestines. Nothing exceptional, but a satisfying meal nonetheless.
Visited on a Saturday afternoon. There wasn't a long queue, but only one lady was taking orders, which created a bottleneck. There's a large selection of dishes. I found all of them to be pretty good, but they were on the saltier side, especially the hae bee hiam. We also felt quite thirsty after the meal, which could indicate the liberal use of MSG.
That said, it's affordable. We got 7 dishes and 5 plain porridges, totaling around $35.
There’s limited indoor and outdoor seating.
If you are those that are sourcing for old school Teochew porridge fix, this is one of the better ones around Singapore.
Nothing beats a warm bowl of porridge w flavourful side dishes on a cold rainy night.
Quite a wide variety of dishes to choose from and found it affordable given the air-conditioned seating space. We paid $27 for 3 pax, with 7 dishes. However, dishes were all quite cold and the fish still had scales on it, causing my gum to bleed when it got stuck. I’ve definitely had much better teochew porridge elsewhere and wouldn’t bother making a trip down especially for this.
Had dinner here..., but not a cheap place to hv teochew porridge.
Taste wise, pretty normal. Selection was OK, quite a fair bit of options avail.
Parking here was easy esp at the HDB car park.
Service was not too bad either. But I didn't think the food was worthy of what we paid.
It's opened to about 12mn, so for supper lovers, can try here.
Otherwise, go ahead and try some other teochew porridge, you won't miss much.
Just outside Beo Crescent, along Havelock Road, is a stretch of shops. Most of them sell food (from coffee shop to Thai to pub to restaurant) and this is one of them.
Lim Joo Him is a pretty large teochew porridge stall that occupies two shop units. On the left is a plethora of dishes you can choose from; you can choose to sit in aircon comfort next door, or outside along the corridor if you prefer.
The food is average and none of the dishes we ordered stood out. It's ok, but I personally prefer the dishes at Joo Seng.
The place opens till about 1am, so it's a good place to stop by for supper. There are just a few parking lots along the main road, so it's best to park at the nearby multistorey carpark.
Too salty. Both the vege and spicy sour fish. It seems like an old famous Teochew porridge store with attached HK top celebrity photo in the shop. As well the tv on the wall playing the tv ads about the shop. But it’s really salty , the fish itself also not good.
As a reference always to the viewer, for my background I’m a Malaysian who live in SG for 5 years as of the review.
Porridge at an OK price, thought the fried pork skin was kind of bad. The salted egg was normal (can't really screw this up, right), salted cabbage was salty enough, pork belly / meat was good. The only gripe was the fried pork skin, don't buy that and you're good.
Price wasn't too expensive, under $20 for two pax, IIRC. Food came quickly, but the place was empty also as we came right after the third lockdown.
Visited on a sat Night 830pm. Table plenty. Aircon sitting.
Friendly service . Ease of ordering.
Taste wise is decent like Home cook food.
Price is OK. 21 for 2 pax.
Do try it out. Ignore those reviews 1 year ago...
Will return for supper some night.
Choose to dine-in in airconditioned area or along the road side (smokers). Dishes are colour coded by their plates. White plates start at $4. I liked the braised pork belly, tofu puff, soybean skin, steamed/ boiled peanuts, Muay cai (lacking meat tho), chicken feet, sweet and sour pork, brinjal. You must compliment all these dishes with their wonderfully garlicky vinegary chilli sauce, that boosts your appetite to eat more..however was disappointed with the fried mackerel in dark soy, too dry and cold. For this particular fish dish, it should be served warm or hot (purple plate = expensive). Would be nice if the colour codes are posted on the wall somewhere for reference. A good place for a light meal or supper. Multi story carpark or park by the road if you are lucky.
Kiam siap china woman give very little portion and anyhow charge you for extra gravy for porridge. Overall food is very good except for the China woman.
Comfort food at a convenient place and time. Wide range of dish options, plus a tze char menu.
This is classic Chinese comfort food. The porridge is pretty ordinary but the dishes are traditionally done especially the minced pork. It's not the cheapest and seems to have gone a bit upmarket from a neighbourhood shop to a air-conditioned restaurant but I still enjoyed the food.
Nice teochew porridge and calm food for an evening night actually. Simple, humble and good.
Decent teochew porridge but don't expect each dish to be best of its kind. Its comfort food, reasonable and convenient.
Not bad, pretty costly for porridge. Interestingly, they do not have squid, salted egg meat cake, etc.. so that’s pretty disappointing. Overall I would not come again
Taste : 8/10 (reminded me of my Teochew grandma's cooking)
Value: 8/10 (i dont why there are lots of review saying its expensive - we had a steam fish, duck meat, 5 other dishes for $32)
Service: Everyone was polite, service was quick.
Environment: the aircon area is clean and neat. the food side was a bit old and dark but it does brings me back to my clubbing days when we will head there for supper.. 25 years ago.
I will definintely be back
I love the tender braised intestines here, as well as the ridiculously soft handmade fishcake. Teochew porridge is a simple meal but when done right, it is just an amazing party in your mouth.
Those two items more than make up for the expensive prices here!
Food is alright. But, considering it is teochew porridge, it is not cheap.
Happened to be around the area, therefore try it out. The foods are not bad, the hae-bee- hiam is particularly yummy.
Price is on high side, had piece of fish with 3 side dishes & 2 can drinks for $27
Mee Siam mia hum hor ! Mia hum mia hum mia hum ! (Humming Mr Brown's song). No mee Siam here, but good spread of Teochew porridge small dishes. You taste some of the traditional Teochew dishes under $10/pax. Still opens at 12am !
All this for $12.80 dinner for 2 very light and simple Teochew porridge
Had dinner yesterday at this teovhew porridge stall. We ordered 8 dishes, peanuts, preserved veg, tau pok, small intestines, fried egg with tomato, 1 hard boiled egg, clams and vinegar pig trotters. The price was average, cause it costs us $33. Very quiet place, not alot of customers. Food was average also, nothing fanciful. The pig trotters meat was quite dry and not very tasty. Doesn't seems like it has been cooked long enough for the meat and skin to fully absorb the sauce. Some of the intestines were also dried. Overall, average only. Not a place that I might remember or probably come visit the 2nd time.
One of the best teochew porridge place around. Huge variety of dishes to choose from. My favourite are spicy shrimp paste, salted egg, braised pork belly. Opens late. Air-conditioned with plenty of seats.
When ordering porridge, do order the ikan bilis (small fish) with peanuts, as well as a serving of spicy minced meat. They both add lots of flavour to the porridge.
Apart from that, the fish cakes are soft and easy to eat. The omelette is flavourful, and the fish is tender and juicy. Sad thing about the sliced braised duck is that they are just a little bit tough. Overall a great place to eat.
Perfect teochew porridge on a cold rainy day. Beo Crescent is a calm and quiet HDB estate. I was seated at a corner table just beside the road, watching the pedestrians go about their businesses at the end of a typical work day, as the mellow rain and gentle breeze continued unabated.
The 30 mins spent there didn't really feel like Singapore in a decidedly very Singapore looking HDB estate. I'm not sure if you will be that lucky to experience the same.
The staff were efficient, calm and helpful. Unhurried.
Braised pork belly had the right chewiness - not too soft or too hard even with the relatively thick 2cm cut. The tofu dish and long bean was pretty normal though. Normal as in the normal kind of delicious home-cooked food mind you.
10/10 will come back again to try the other 30 dishes.
Decent Porridge place that opens till very late. Being a patron for many years although not too frequent as it is quite costly. But one of the better ones.
The meat (Duck) and fish will set you back by tens while the other dishes are inexpensive. A porridge with fish cake, hebi hiam, veg and minced meat is about SGD8.00.
Our favourite Teochew porridge place. Everything is good, not too oily or over-seasoned. Consistent. And efficient.
Amazing teochew porridge air conditioned outlet in Singapore.
Their star of the outlet has to be the savoury pig trotters and skin.
They literally melts in your mouth.
Soy sauce and curry condiments are suitably and lightly salted adding more oomph if you want a richer flavour.
Paired with a bowl of warm hearty porridge and a heavenly lunch/dinner is complete.
To top it off, everything here is reasonably priced
1 PAX serving of braised duck, pig trotters, peanuts/anchovies, pig skin and fried pork with 1 bowl of porridge = SGD15.80 ...
Their signature dish is the asam fish which is a aquire taste since the fish had many bones. Plenty of other choices such as fresh raw cockles for your porridge needs.
Very tasty bah chor and loh zup. perfectly cooked porridge. feeling really comfortable after eating. will definately come again.
it was normal for me. nothing special. had better one at another place.
Overall is good, one of my go to place for porridge. Price is at higher side but indoor and got aircon so still alright.
Porridge is good. Many varieties.
Many items of food
Porridge is hot . I like it , always went to eat or buy back home.
Google is tracking me through this app. The food is okie. Got air con. Not the best best, but good. Not the cheapest but reasonable. Next time give you photo.
The variety of dishes has reduced slightly and the price now is more reasonable. Used to be very expensive.
The food quality has deteriorated. Price of dishes is expensive compared to other similar stall.
Food is very good and they offer indoor and outdoor seating! Very relaxing environment and their barley is good!
Nice food, hearsay very expensive but when i pay the bill, it was surprisingly cheap.
Excellent Teowchew porridge. Bring a crowd so u can order more to share
Favourite place for Teochew porridge in a stretch of pre-WW2 shop houses.
