Amps Tea @ Ang Mo Kio Central: A Worthy Replacement
Rating:
• Drinks: 4/5 (Flavourful, but not as full-bodied as Chagee)
• Service: 5/5 (Efficient and friendly despite the long queue)
• Overall: 4/5 (A solid replacement for Chagee, with a fast-paced, friendly service)
Review:
Recently, Donkey and I decided to walk to Ang Mo Kio Central for a drink after picking up our contact lenses. We were craving a cup of tea, but we were surprised to find that the Chagee shop had been replaced by Amps Tea.
Amps Tea has outdoor seating, and when we arrived, there was a long line of customers waiting for their drinks. There was only one server working, but he was incredibly efficient, trying his best to speed up the ordering and preparation process without compromising the service experience for the customers. We got our drinks pretty fast.
We ordered a Da Hong Pao, which also came with a $1.50 discount, instead of taking advantage of the $2.90 promotion on the Jasmine Green Tea Latte or the White Peach Oolong Latte. This deal is only available for members who sign up for Amps Tea's membership.
The drink was flavorful, though not as full-bodied as Chagee. It wasn't as cold as Chagee either, but still acceptable. There's always a crowd queuing for the drinks at this place, which is a testament to its popularity.
Overall, the tea was good, and the server's efforts to keep the line moving were commendable. We'll definitely consider coming back again.
The tea is very nice, I ordered the large da hong pao. The barista was also very nice and had good service, they left a small good luck message :) All the best to the barista too!
Considering the number of negative Google reviews for this branch, I did not expect much when I took a leap of faith to redeem a Qoo10 voucher, one I paid $4.50 for, here. I relented as the sample size of the reviews was, at the time of redemption, somewhat small (17), and some of those who have rated this outlet poorly either had a history of rating almost everything badly or had very few reviews written on their contributions page. My experience, most unfortunately, matched those expectations.
I had to choose one drink from the 'Fresh Milk Tea' section. As an avid tea drinker, I had the impression that the da hao pao and tie guan yin would have stronger tea profiles than the others. Those two were more expensive as well for some reason. The young Chinese lady in spectacles that I had spoken to, however, advised me that the tie guan yin is actually rather light, after initially deciding that I would go for it. She then suggested that I try either the Da Hong Pao or oolong peach given my preferences, and I settled on the latter.
To my dismay, I could barely discern the tea in the drink that I was served. Milky through and through, there was just a slight underlying peach note in each sip that I had taken. I can now corrobate what others have said about their drinks tasting almost like plain fresh milk. Don't get me wrong - it is still somewhat palatable and inoffensive as something cold to consume on a hot day, but no one in the right mind should be paying almost $8 for a cup of milk. You would probably fare better by making a jug of cold brewed flavoured Gryphon, Pryce or TWG tea at home and mixing it with a carton of fresh milk.
I think your mileage may differ when it comes to service. The person who gets to serve you matters. My drink was served efficiently in no more than a minute, but it also helped that there was no queue. The young lady tried her best to answer my queries, notwithstanding the fact that she was somewhat at a loss for words when faced with the feat of explaining why I ought to consider the 25% sugar level option and after she had voluntarily highlighted to me that going for 0% might not be a good idea. She ultimately postulated that the 25% sugar level will better help bring out the flavours of the beverage.
Here are some tips while ordering:
- They use rock sugar (probably in syrup form) to sweeten their drinks. I don't usually add sugar to my drinks, and their 25% sugar level option brings about just a very slight perception of sweetness to my beverage
- You can ask for no ice
- Hold the bottom half of the thin straw while pushing it into the cup, otherwise the force would be too weak to puncture the plastic flap forming a tight seal with the cup's rim
- The peach flavour comes not from peach puree or fresh peach bits, but rather tea leaves pre-scented with peach flavouring (confirmed this with the staff)
With each milk tea option priced at 7 to 8 dollars per cup, I would be hard pressed to visit again, especially with so many better alternatives around the area that offer better bang for your buck. In my experience, only teas from 京盛宇 in Taiwan are able to justify such lofty prices. At Chagee, there are no toppings, fruits, fancy presentation and/or packaging, or depth to the drink - just weak, brewed tea whipped together with milk that tastes slightly stale, executed in one of the most uninspired ways possible. Put simply, there's nothing going for chagee if one were to only consider the merits of their milk teas; the brand desperately needs a stronger value proposition, such as by developing their own unique toppings, flavours or blends. Their marketing game is strong though - they had me fooled with their 正旦 motifs, all of which give off a sense of their drinks being authentic and full of character. That cannot be further from the reality, sadly.
Do give them a try yourself though, as with all things, so that you can form your own opinion about the brand.
Visited the newly renovated S-11’s haji s.m hateem.
For the $8 price tag, the Chicken Murtabak was very satisfying , with a savoury fish curry to complement the crispy layer of prata. Would recommend with a hot cup of Tarik.
Here for their king size fresh fruit tea, they have a promotion that if you give a 5 star review you get 1 dollars off. I’ve tried other fruit teas before so am really looking forward to trying their variation.
essentially chagee but cheaper. love the outdoor seating!
Place had a honkai star rail collab quite recently, the collab drinks were very good, more on the expensive side though. Had to wait an hour for the drinks (bo pian), atmosphere quite annoying cause they play the same song over and over again.
1. White Peach Oolong Latte 8/10
Mostly tasted like fresh milk with a hint of oolong and peach flavour, very nice if you prefer lighter flavours tea flavours. (Comes down to personal preference, but personally i find the subtleness of the peach very nice.)
2. Tie Guan Ying Latte 7/10
Fresh Milk with strong tea taste. Better if you like stronger tea flavours
Other Brewed Teas 7/10
Decent tea. Nothing else much to say.
Service 9/10
The cashier was very helpful and responsive
Cashier is cute. Service is fast. Drinks are nice. My favourite outlet in Singapore
There was only one person manning the place so service was rather slow. Otherwise, the drinks were all really good.
