Reviews of Common Man Coffee Roasters - Joo Chiat Road
probably the best cubanos i have ever had in singapore and my bf was extremely happy with his smash burger! had the tremendous pleasure of dining here for a late lunch a couple of days ago - was kind of shocked at the portions (very generous) and taste. to be frank, i was expecting exceptional coffee and mid food, but it was brilliant on both ends. im pretty sure they make their own bread in house, or their supplier is just GOAT.
the wait staff were great too! the cafe was packed and bustling, but the wait staff kept up and gave us all the attention we needed. we never felt neglected! and it felt very cosy and comfy amidst all the chattering folks. a great place to unwind and chill, highly recommended and can't wait to go back and try their brunch menu (which looks really good).
Located at a corner of a building along Joo Chiat and this allows special seating arrangement where a group can have some seated indoor and some outdoor.
Ordered the Chai Latte and it was one of the good ones that I have tasted in Singapore, probably slightly too sweet for me. Ordered a Fried Chicken Sandwich and a Smash Burger. The only thing about the chicken sandwich is that it's fried and nothing much special about this, taste normal to me. The better one is the Smash Burger, which is recommended.
Ordered Acai Bowl, which it is a must have. Consists of sliced banana, rich cacao nibs, and generous cacao granola, with two scopes of ice cream that's not too sweet. Perfect for dessert.
Love the vibe and service! The atmosphere was fantastic, and the staff were incredibly attentive and friendly. Unfortunately, I came in during the hot afternoon, which made things a bit uncomfortable. But overall, a great experience—I’ll definitely be back, maybe at a cooler time of day!
Surprised not much queue for Sunday early brunch. The food is quite good. Really enjoyed the braised ox cheek eggs Benny. The only small complaint is the beverage is served quite slow and came after food. It’s a good place if you want to take it slow and just have a relaxing brunch.
Good atmosphere and vibe. Big breakfast is really huge enough to skip lunch. Mocha with oatside without additional charges which is good. Service is good. Worth coming for second or third time or everyday if you can.
A very cozy and relaxing coffee place where ideal for me to meeting friends and thinking through things. You don’t need air con but feeling really cool. Bytheway food and coffee is spot on. There is a window you can see the idol mind.
Common Man Coffee Roasters at Joo Chiat is one of my go-to spots. I’ve been here many times, and the food and drinks never disappoint. Drinks are always spot on, and the dishes are consistently good. But what really keeps me coming back is the ambiance – it’s cozy, inviting, and the perfect place to unwind.
The location in Joo Chiat is also a big plus, surrounded by charming streets with a laid-back vibe.
It's a nice atmosphere to have a wonderful breakfast. Take note the portion it's quite big make order one first before you order too much
Lovely place to chillax any time of the day from 0730 with their coffees, teas, sodas & juices. Breakfast is served from 0730 to 1600. Everything else is from 1000-2130.
Just stopped by for after dinner drinks and dessert. Beet Box was a fantastic surprise-4 types of red fruits & _____ (a surprise). Lemon & thyme was a zesty twist too❣️We'll be back for Big Breakfast.
Went for breakfast, the customer service and atmosphere were great!
Food is tasty and filling. To be honest the atmosphere is the best part of this cafe
Amongst the best sourdough. Better than TBB. Fragrant and tangy. Absolutely perfect lightly toasted. And what a beautifully constructed croissant. Shiok.
Amazing cafe with free WiFi to do your work/personal stuff if you require internet.
5/5 flat white : can't say much about the coffee but it's amazing and doesn't taste bad
5/5 herbed fries: banger of a fries this is with huge portions; super worthhh
The herb & spice fries are nice. Pesto pasta nice too, just a tad too dry. Full breakfast is normal. Coffee is very sour.
Nice place to chill if you like loud music.
This is the first Cafè I tried along Joo Chiat Road.
Location is easy to find, the atmosphere is very relaxing on a Saturday morning.
Staff were nice and service was fast.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the White Coffee in Oat Milk
Coffee tastes good with a hint of nutty and cocoa flavour.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the Common Man Full Breakfast
Serving was generous! Good for sharing
⭐️⭐️⭐️ for the fluffy pancake as it was not fluffy at all… 😓
Will I come back? Yes!
Heard from friends about this place and happened to be in the area.
Food:we ordered the common man breakfast for 2 but we wanted vegetarian option so we told the waiter to swap out the mean for something else or just more vegetables. Which is not hard to and don’t cost as much at the mean products.
I would have given it 5 stars but being in flexible…I mean, can’t we be inclusive for dietary restrictions?
Coffee was really good I must say.
Service:The waiter was really friendly and made sure everything was clean and tables were set.
Atmosphere:Spacious and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.
Brilliant spot in Joo Chiat for Sunday brunch!! They serve excellent options both for breakfast and lunch as well as a variety of beverages. Ordered the Croissant Croque Monsieur and the Conti Sandwich -- both were super! Also indulged in a PB&J smoothie, which was heavenly. 🥐 🥪
It gets very busy here, we were lucky enough to get a table by walking in. The staff is super friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a visit and I'll be back for sure.
Spacious with nice ambience
Opens 730am is an excellent plus
Decent coffee just that I am not a fan of acidic coffee . But took awhile to serve.
Nice and friendly staff
Good food! Good vibes! I love the service here! Ordered the Mediterranean Common Man Breakfast and it was so good! The fruit juices are small but very yummy. The doughnut was super delicious too! We enjoyed the outdoor seating. Not too crowded on a Friday!
Decent food though not sure if I would come back for it, pretty standard cafe tasting food. Came for dinner so may be more suitable for breakfast/lunch. I found the flatbread to be a bit oily and messy to eat. The vibe is chill and it’s a nice place to chat. Servers were helpful and also gave wine recommendations. Overall would say it’s an okay place to come if you’re in the area.
Super good mocha and hot chocolate, paired it along with the banana cake. Very good combination. Unfortunately not enough time to try their main menus. Will definitely come back.
Very friendly and helpful crews..
Service here was good, staff were attentive and our drinks came out quickly, even on a busy public holiday morning.
We had the iced black and iced chocolate, the coffee was strong, and the chocolate was good. Not diluted / weak. Place seems to be pet friendly, as other patrons with small dogs were seated after us.
Good spot to watch cars go by, or people watch. Toilet signage was a little confusing, but essentially both were unisex.
We came here for coffee and dessert. Service was generally good, though the initial seating experience could have been a little better and more welcoming. The coffee was nice and the desserts were tasty. What gives me pause is that the overall value proposition was poor. Two standard coffees, a small slice of cake, and some tiny churros cost as much as our lunch.
Really well prepared and fresh ingredients. Very accomodating to any customizations, friendly and responsive service. The all day breakfast and avocado toast with mushroom was just perfect. The poached eggs are just text book consistent. Love this place
Food a bit on the pricey side, nice atmosphere though, queue usually quite long, food is good. A nice cafe to come with friends but not with a baby because it’s too noisy and at dark corners have mosquitoes! Maybe ok for older kids.
Located at a quieter part of this stretch with many cafes, restaurants and bakeries, the ambience is good. Friendly and attentive staff was a huge plus!
Hot Mocha was really good! Not just some sweet Mocha elsewhere. Food was not bad - I liked the Crab Salad that came with real flaked crab meat (hidden below the rockets). But, it is indeed on the pricier end among cafes (especially the full breakfast). Would be good if have more dishes with meats (not having to $$ add-on) at friendlier prices.
This was past Thursday morning at 8 am & resturant was not full until about 10/11 am. We were a party of 5 seated along the veranda - 2 inside the resturant & 3 along the common corridor walkway. So semi alfresco take note.
Nice layout with varying configuration of long tables, round tables, rectangular tables. Stools, high stools & chairs for seats. Nice set-up. Adequately lit too. 8.75/10 👍🏼
Nice ambience. Good service, attentive & friendly staff - all 3 that waited on us were congenially pleasant 9/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The kitchen I must say did a perfect job in presentation. Taste wise very good - see pictures with captions for details. 9.5/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A repeat for sure. Will bring family members in my next visit.
Review no. 2 (July 3rd, 2022)
7 pax at the round table. In addition to the above orders from first review, we ordered the Big Breakfast 9/10; baked beans with chorizo sausage was interestingly good, 2 Veggie Wonderland, one with eggs over easy & the other was scramble eggs. The Savoury Pancakes had egg well done. See pictures please.
Overal 8.5/10 experience. Can get a bit noisy on a Sunday afternoon from the full house.
#1st review#
I thoroughly enjoyed both the Veggie Wonderland and Big Breakfast dishes. The ingredients used were of high quality, skillfully cooked, and the portions were quite generous. A standout element was the Beetroot BBQ sauce served on the side, which was absolutely bomb.
I also appreciated the availability of fresh juice options, and I ended up having two glasses of refreshing dragon fruit, beetroot, and pomegranate juices.
An additional highlight of the restaurant is its pet-friendly atmosphere, where I encountered numerous adorable dogs during my visit.
#2nd review (10 months later)#
The staff keyed wrong order so I ended up with two pizza, namely The Original M and Vegie Heavan. I personally prefer The Original M although it was a mistake. I was secretly hoping for discount, haha.
I visited Common Man Night Shift (previously known as Drunken Farmer) and decided to try their Udon Pasta. Although the aroma of cheese was quite strong, the taste turned out to be quite good once I mixed the pasta, cheese, and runny egg together.
Unfortunately or fortunately, there was a mix-up with my order, and I ended up receiving two pizzas instead of what I initially ordered. The pizzas were The Original M and Vegie Heavan. Surprisingly, I actually preferred The Original M even though it was a mistake. I couldn't help but secretly hope for a discount, haha.
Loved the place, good, and people here. What a great find. Had a really good salad and avocado toast. The coffee and dessert was also fantastic.
Had the big breakfast. The mushrooms and tomatoes were nice. Sausage was too hard and scrambled eggs didn’t have much seasoning. Portions were a good size, though flavor is lacking. And for the price of $30++, it leaves much to be desired.
Also felt the dining area (indoors) was incredibly noisy - had to raise my voice to talk with friends. The “bustling” vibe is overdone imo.
I do stop by for coffee and brunch once in a while. The food and coffee is good so no complaints there.
Service is generally good but the place does get a bit crowded so if you're sitting outside it can get a little warm when the sun comes up.
Very good place with very relaxed atmosphere. Staffs were very friendly and accommodating. The food was not bad but i wasn't the best. Coffee is very basic. Tiramisu can be better hehe.
Thank you!
Good Food - Portions are sumptuous.
Tried the plain black coffee which was surprisingly dissapointing - No great flavour / serving temperature was low (warm at best) / regular black coffee Portions size can be a bit bigger.
Learnt that they are running two brands now, Common Man in the day and something else in the evening. Either ways, I've tried both and I really enjoyed myself a lot.
Yet to try any mains there, but the dessert and bites I've had were certainly great. Special shoutout to the gentleman who served me, he is the experienced staff there responsible of ushering customers to their tables. Super friendly and nice to talk to, speaks really well too.
Gentleman offered me some snacks to try on the house, as they launched some new food items. Will be sure to come back (with friends and time) next time to enjoy properly! :)
Mediocre food, we ordered a crab salad and the chef forgotten to put some ingredients that was mentioned in the menu, not that enjoyable. On the pricey side. The place also is very harsh on the environment, doors and windows wide open while the air-condition is on super cold, and a lot of fans on as well. It's very much a waste of energy and electricity, creating a lot of excess green house gas.
Some of the best coffee I’ve found in SG. Very friendly staff, and this location in particular has a very nice vibe. I especially love the seats that look thru to the street via a large open window. My only critique is that the music is usually a bit too loud :)
Came with wife after nearby lunch... need to queue a bit but lucky only 2 of us so got a table in less than 5mins.
I ordered the filter coffee from Brazil while wife get a Ice Mocca. Also ordered churros to share.
My filter coffee is ok, not to acidic which I like but a bit to light for me, prefer something stronger.
Churros, a bit over cook and became a bit to hard. Came with 2 sauces - chocolate and caramel. The caramel was good, not sweet... chocolate has a bit bitter taste.
Environment was good to chill on a rest day but be prepare to wait especially if you come in big group.
Nice place to chill and their croissant is good. Parking avail along the road side which is great. It runs full house on a Friday morning! Guess will be very crowded over the weekends.
Busy place all the time.
Quality food with a nice presentation.
Easy and chill atmosphere.
Come at it's price :)
Top service level. Rarely had such good service in Singapore. Coffee was ok, food was generally good. The sourdough was great. The decor of the place is superb. They open early so it’s good for early birds. Some cafes in the vicinity open much later.
The price though. It’s quite pricey. 1 pax can easily be around $30+ for coffee and brunch. Definitely worth a visit or two. But to come frequently, can be challenging for the pocket.
Nice cafe along Joo Chiat Road. Food was delicious & service was especially good.
Love the window seatings which was a unique experience.
We informed service staff that the coffee was acidic & was told that they actually have a more nutty flavour called “22 Martin”. Do ask for this coffee bean if you do not like acidic taste.
Prices are slightly steep though & there’s service charge & GST.
Fantastic setting. Great service with friendly service staff, Ron was one of the people waiting on me, good food, great coffee and the loaf cakes albeit a little expensive are very well done. Great gula melaka and lemon thyme slices. Healthy options for mains which are well priced for the quality and quantity. Great old town Singapore ambiance for a quiet weekday jaunt for a coffee treat.
Pancake and hash brown are nice. Cosy place too! Love the fresh juices served there. 3 dish and 2 drink is about $90++
Delicious brekkie in the mid-week, relieving from work and kids stress. LOL. Maybe a little pricey but worth on the taste and presentation. Anyhow, is a way to pamper ourselves after days of hard work! Just a few days more of hawker food. 😂
Always love Common Man's food and coffee. First time visiting the branch in East Coast and it's as good as the Common Man at Martin Road. You can tell how popular it is from the queue :)
Very limited vegan option (more for vegetarians) but it's worth trying ;)
Great food as always and good vibes. service was a little slow compared to other busy cm which I have been. There were a few spare seats for me but they kept me waiting which at first is fine but when it starts to hit 10mins and was still there, I had to ask in the end to just sit at any of the seats that had been free since I arrived and they finally sat me down straight away at one of them. I then just couldn't get served. Despite sitting patiently for a while. In the end I went to till to give my order. The food then came very fast and was fantastic food!
A very good ambience for tea or coffee and their famous PB and J smoothie. Spent some good times catching up with families and friends here. It's always a good time to have some coffee ☕ with family. The service was excellent and the seating arrangement with large numbers can always be made in advance. Good job guys keep it up
We came here for drinks. Our server Es and the other gentleman was very attentive to our needs. We enjoyed the drinks here. Will definitely come back!
Decent all around, but maybe a bit over hyped? I was expecting really good coffee and food here...
Good coffee from this well-established roaster. Default for the regular flat white was a double shot. Choice of their blends or single origin. This latest regular white (Colombia Risaralda) was robust and had orange, molasses, chocolate notes.
From earlier visits:
Regular double shot whites:
Lucky Basterd blend - fruity, chocolate notes though the flavour was not so vibrant or clear.
Ethiopia Wogi
Guatemala Lomas Altas - chocolaty, slight cherry, grape notes.
Guatemala Lomas Altas - chocolaty, brown sugar notes.
Colombia Diego Castro - complex, rum, white grapes, berries notes, and was one of best cups I’ve had.
Ethiopia Kayon Mountain - green apple notes.
Filter:
Colombia Villamaria - currants, cherry and tea notes.
Umami mushroom avocado toast - good.
Place is good for an after morning run. Its located in joo chiat area. They are quite busy after 8:30 on a weekend so if you plan to go come earlier as much as you can. You can choose aircon or outside to dine in do note that outside means few people walking back and forth. They are also kid friendly and pet friendly so expect few fur baby if you come and dine. They serve quite few variations of breakfast menu. With pastry available over the counter. Coffee is also sooo good. Good place to go if you are into a laid back classic shophouse scene. And by the way staff are nice and they will give you options. Will come again soon. ❤️
Tried their fluffy pancakes with cranberries walnuts, soft beef cheeks with organic eggs benedict, toasted bread... And flat white. Nice!
Great food (for a price) and great vibes. One of the rare few places that offers a really good coffee AND good food.
Good Ambiance and few options to choose from Vegan and Gluten Free. Taste was okay. A bit on the expensive side. Not sure why but our food was a bit cold.
Service was very good but food fell short. I had cold brew in the same outlet once before and had very good memories of it (couldn’t remember what beans they used but the notes were amazing). Ordered cold brew ($8.5) again today but was disappointed by how one dimensional it tasted. Had the pain au chocolat ($5.5) from tbb as well, they heated it up but it wasn’t very warm. Not sure if it’s freshly made on the day itself because it wasn’t as soft and flaky as I would’ve liked.
Food order didn't come as requested.
Food tastes - Good
Otherwise nothing much of excitement.
Just another good cafe to have brunch and hang out.
Cozy cafe along Joo Chiat Road. Ordered their signature breakfast. Good portion and every item on the plate was delicious. Coffee is superb.
Good service with the good food. They do provided vegetarian as well. Definitely is a good place to spend weekends here with families and friends.
Wanted some greens but most of the breakfast items with greens were vegetarian so ended up ordering the full breakfast which was hefty (I had been forewarned).
I love the large portobello mushroom but found the large bacon strips too dry and crispy for my liking - but that's me.
The portion of beans was large and not mushy enough though.
The sausage was good and also the hash browns made into a cake
Altogether satisfying but not exceptional.
Ordered white coffee - didn't have to add sugar and just right.
Wonderful English breakfast, very yummy! Value for money.
No joke - the best eggs benedict I have had ever. Their combination with braised ox tail was super good!!
Love the vibes here too. Always wondered why they are perpetually crowded, now i know why.
No powerplugs though, if you’re looking to get some work done.
This was an excellent culinary experience. From the moment we entered the atmosphere, it was welcoming. Ed greeted us with an amazing attitude and attention. The food was well presented and complimentary to the taste I anticipated. Debby and the team have done an incredible job. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to treat themselves well!
The name doesn’t mean it’s common price for the local. Relatively expensive for similar cafe. Good food and vibes draw plenty of crowd waiting to get a table.
Excellent service and great food -- ordered Margherita Pizza and Herbed Fries, and they were delicious!
Staff was very detailed when it comes to bean-grinding requests, asking my friend how she is intending to brew the coffee so the beans are ground for the intended purpose.
Glad this place exists in the east. It’s probably the nicest of the CM spaces. Decent brews, tasty meals, tons of cute doggos, and lovely team of humans working there.
I enjoy their honey oat cold brew and will drop by when near any outlets. This has the most aussie vibe, though a little noisy imo with the many hard surfaces indoors, will sit outdoors next time.
Excellent service - staff were welcoming and attentive. The food was tasty, especially the Umami Magic pizza. Vegan and vegetarian options available, with a wide selection of alcoholic beverages. Happy Hour available - check with staff for details. Toilets were very clean.
Their food and coffee never disappoint no matter which outlet you visit. The food portion are pretty decent and good for sharing as well.
They don't impose a dining time limit which is really nice as it gives you sufficient time to enjoy the food and chill.
Expensive but tasty. We spent $60 USD for one entree each and one juice each for breakfast.
Great coffee n Great Food at good price... parking is a challenge though..
Prices was quite high. But everything is not bad, good food and coffee is also greate
Flat white and almond croissant (by Tiong Bahru Bakery)
It is a good place to go for breakfast, the food is just as delicious as it looks in the photos, something that I also loved was the atmosphere, it is very nice
I thought it was an excellent place, I really recommend it
Always a bit of mixed feelings when a local shop is replaced by another coffee roaster/avocado toast, but in this case the excuse to update the paint job on lovely shophouse tipped the balance. Same consistent coffee from one of the more renowned roasters in SG.
Nice place for brunch. Food and coffee is good. A little hot outside.
Good coffee selection.
Delicious meals 😋
You may have to queue for a while during holidays, but it won’t be long.
Delicious and hearty breakfasts, great coffee. Friendly service and beautiful interior design.
A nice cafe in a fashionable area ☕️✨
The staff were also very nice and made me feel comfortable.
Nice place for a quality brunch. A little noisy all the same. The service is top notch.
Beautiful cafe in Joo Chiat. Highly recommended for breakfast.
My Beet the Dragon juice was a little too salty.
The chairs are too hard and the interior is hot.
The food quality and coffee make up for it…
