Reviews of Mr Grumpy Nasi Ayam (Holland Drive)
The Signatuee Nasi Ayam ($6.50) for takeaway, was a mixed experience (7/10).
Unfortunately, the signature crispy chicken turned soggy during transport, though the crispy bits retained their delightful crunch. The chicken thigh was a highlight—flavorful, tender, and juicy. The rice was fragrant and fluffy, similar to Hainanese chicken rice.
For the best experience, I recommend dining in to fully enjoy the crispy chicken at its best.
The fried chicken was incredibly tender and juicy with irresistible crunchy fried toppings. Nasi is fragrant and their sweet sambal is flavourful not too spicy. Their portion is huge too.
It’s value for money too.
Knowing that Mr. Grumpy claimed to be Singapore's #1 Nasi Ayam Goreng (after all, I'm a fan of both Nurhidayah @ Beach Road and Farasha by Intan @ Seah Im), I had to give it a try.
The stall is located at Block 43 Holland Drive.
The place offers your standard "hawker center" sitting but doesn't get enough ventilation so it can feel quite stuffy on hotter days.
I ordered nasi ayam goreng ($6.50) and added on telur puyuh ($1).
The rice was flavourful but served cold. The chicken was crispy, and juicy but it was cold and lacked flavour. The sampal was sweet and not really spicy. But paired well with the rice and chicken. The soup given tasted like mee soto soup, which i thought was very weird.
Overall, not worth the travel down to it’s outlet.
Comes with half spring chicken crispy friend! Chilli is sweet and matches well with the fried chicken.
Soup is flavourful- like the Malay’s ayam soup.
Rice however is more on the bland side, not spiced.
On the whole it’s a sumptuous lunch and I added quail eggs and potatoes baget - all for SGD 8.50.
Took away for Lunch in office as I was told it’s nice. Not bad. The rice is not plain rice, slightly fragrant and the chicken is crispy but I find the taste not as flavourful. Overall 👍🏼.
The service could be better as only one guy chopping the chicken and he’s not as fast as those seasoned hawker, while the other two stand there waiting for him when all orders have been taken. Therefore leading to slightly long waiting time..
Have you try Mr Grumpy 😠 #1 Nasi Ayam Goreng in Town⁉️
Well known grumpy Chef 👨🍳 Addie Shafie at Fiie’s Cafe Lucky Plaza
You can get his no frills Nasi Ayam at Holland Drive now
Golden deep fried chicken is undoubtedly the main star of this dish✨✨
The chicken was crispy outside, juicy tender inside
Well marinated with his secret spice & fried to perfection
Mixed with their sweet smoky sambal. All the flavours just go so well together
It served with super fragrant rice loaded with crunchy bits
It comes with a bowl of flavourful mee Soto style soup
You can order ala carte sides like punchy sambal quail eggs,
delicate soft bergedil (potato patty) and addictive sambal hotdogs
I found that the food just as good as the one I had at Lucky Plaza
You even can get the grumpy vibes here with one of his Malay staff 😂😂
Bagus anot ⁉️
Definitely lives up to the hype ✅
No need to travel all the way to Lucky Plaza‼️

Stall: #1 Nasi Ayam Goreng In Town!
(Mr Grumpy/ by Fiies’ Cafe)
@ Coffeeshop : S11 HL43 Food House
Blk 43, Holland Drive. S(270043)
This stall was setup couple of months ago, as my driving Kakis, Ms Ah Kim shared and had been eating their flair of Nasi Ayam for at least 3 times and had invited/ gave a treat over here, as we lunch together! 😄😅
Costs : $6.50 + $1.00 (begedil)
Total @ $7.50.
What’s so good 😊?
1. Crispy on the outside, savoury moist, tenderised on the inside !
2. Nice fragranceful rice 🍚/ Nasi / akin to chicken rice!
3. Spicy 🌶️ sweetened sambalised chillies 🌶️
4. Nice, herbalised soupy 🥣 and tasty too !
Highly recommended as the stall strive to be your number #1: Nasi Ayam Goreng ever ! 😮 🤩 👍 ⭐️
Cheers 🐓 🍚 🌶️ 🥣

I don't usually give 5 stars, but when I do, it's because it's the best variant I have ever tasted. As far as Nasi Ayam Goreng goes, nothing even comes close to Mr Grumpy's. Having eaten at the OG stall in Lucky Plaza, I was bowled over when they opened multiple outlets and maintained the mouth-watering batter the chicken is coated in and a sambal that screams my name with ever spoonful I gulp down. Tip: come after 1pm lest you feel like queuing for at least 45 minutes.
Only 1 menu in the shop, with add on. A bit pricy for a fried chicken rice.
Taste wise is ok, chilli is more like nasi lemak chilli. Sweet. Would be better if they serve with garlic chilli.
Really one of the best nasi ayam! Portion is huge. Chicken is so crispy. Love the sides too. Looks good too!
Came on a Tues at 11am, there was already a long queue. Queue for ordering moved very quickly, ordered at 11.15am. My queue number was 22 and my order was ready at 11.45am. Would say the wait was relatively fast considering there were quite a few big orders.
The rice was fragrant, chicken taste was great and flavourful and the chilli was a nice sweet chilli that wasn’t spicy. We added on begedil, sambal hotdog and quail egg (each side at $1). Portion is just nice, the ratio of chicken to rice would be better if there’s slightly more rice (chicken portion was huge but by the time I finished eating the rice, there was still quite a bit of chicken).
The only downside was that the chicken I had was slightly dry, but my friend said hers was juicy, so will reevaluate again!
Chicken was good. Rice was not bad. Chilli was bad. And the price of it was 6.50 with just chicken and rice (i added 1 dollar for the sausage). Abit on the expensive side. Will eat again? Probably no. The one at the hawker centre is nicer.
Ordered the Signature Nasi Ayam. Same great yummilicious crispy goodness without grumpy staff or long queue, set out in a bigger kopitiam space with plenty of sitting. Had the breast quarter and meat was moist and freshly fried and piping hot! Loved the fragrant rice and chilli tends to be on the sweeter side. Will go back to try the sides!
Decent nasi ayam goreng, for coffeeshop standard.
However, when compared to the main store in Lucky Plaza, the standard is much lower.
Note that I don't have fussy taste buds that can detect minute differences - this is obviously different.
Food was ordinary. Cold. The stalls at this coffee shop don’t seem to be doing well. A number have opened and shut. The bergadil also tasteless
Nice Nasi Ayam in Holland Drive Market. Chicken piece size is good & they give a soup with it. The sauce is also quite good.
The soup itself already contains more flavour than some chicken rice dishes from elsewhere. You don't feel bad savouring the crisp of the chicken when it's cooked so well and presented in an oil-free way. Malay chicken rice, incidentally, is of an entirely different flavour palette from Hainanese chicken rice. Come try this and the difference will be seared into your otak
Had to give them a try since it was so legendary raved about.
food wise : was excellent, nothing to complain about , chill was on the sweet side so for those not used to it , might wanna cut down on the saucing.
queue : 3 man team had the bottleneck on the plate arranger guy. He damn poor thing, need to assemble, prep , receive order etc. He was the main reason why you will have to wait 40mins during lunch crowd.
the kopitiam tenant can be quite hostile if you overspill over to their space, rightfully so but yea, numbering is manually shouted so you need to camp near for your fried chiken
Yummy ! Generous with their sambal too 😊👍🏻
Good portion of crispy chicken with nice chilli but expensive for a basic dish
