New stall in a newly renovated coffee shop. Now this coffee shop has become a bright airy spacious new place. Previously old and tired with cheap tables and plastic chairs. Tried this fish stall and ordered the red grouper soup with rice. $8.50 because it’s grouper. Batang fish was cheaper. Given about 4 slices of fish plus a thickly cut fish cake (strange). Fish was very fresh and succulent and I liked the fish cake (though it seemed a bit out of place in this dish). The soup was light and flavourful and I added plenty of bawang goreng (fried onion). They also added slivers of ginger into the soup to get rid of the “fishiness”. Rice could be a bit hotter though. And cashier could do with a bit more smile and friendliness.

Batang Fish Soup @ Soon Lee Fish Soup I noticed this bright blue board while I bought dinner from another store nearby and decided to try out the fish soup in a future trip. Given the praise they proudly displayed near their board, I thought it wouldn’t be bad. And it wasn’t! While the soup was simple and savoury, the fish was super fresh. Tender and sliced to just the right thickness, it has enough bite to be satisfying and not so thick it becomes hard to eat. There is zero fishiness to it. Ginger lovers will also appreciate the numerous strands in the soup.(not me though) Personally, I dislike when the fish is too loose and chewy as the texture becomes like cardboard but this is just perfect. Each bite goes down easy. and the fish breaks apart along the lines. It’s easy enough to eat the slice whole, and pairing it with the chilli for that extra flavor is great. Overall, the fish is the best part and despite the rest of the things being pretty normal, it’s simple and delicious. I look forward to returning, Will eat again!
