Reviews of Climb Central Katong
Climb Central Katong is a quiet place for climbing. It has a variety of walls from slab, over hang and vertical ones.
The aircon is cold in the middle.
It’s a good climbing set up and fun once you get going. Unfortunately the staff don’t help to make this a seem-less process if you’re doing anything more complicated than 1 or 2 people going for a straight forward climb. We were a group of 2 adults and 3 children who needed to do the safety briefly. They wouldn’t start the briefing until they had more people to do it with (5 isn’t enough?!) so we waited 20 minutes to start the briefing while others signed up. And then, because there are now 7 people doing the briefing, that took 25 minutes. So with the equipment etc, it was an hour before we could climb. The kids got bored, the adults got frustrated. Meanwhile there are 3 staff sitting behind the front desk.
Once you’re no longer a first time climber, and if you’re 1 or 2 people, it’s fine.
The staff were very helpful. Great routes, very beginner friendly.
just take note, the parking of this mall was expensive!
Lately staff strength and expertise seem to improved. Good for families and friends to gather and climb together
More spacious, more variety of routes, friendly staff (forgot his name, bt he wears specs), cosy ambience, alot of different “after climb recovery stations” makes this a go to place, especially for those staying in the east.
unfortunately north and west siders, will have a long long way back home after climb 😬 alot of prospect and definitely a go to in future climb sessions! kudos and congrates CC team!
Nice wide open space with lots of auto belay options. The height is not as high as other CC walls. The low rating is because the auto belay holder strap that connects to the part that hooks to your harness smells really bad - like stagnant sweat. Hopefully this can be cleaned and dried.
Edited - the strap has been cleaned since then; it did not smell bad when I last visited. Thank you for taking note of this.
Can get very busy at times, so unless you can be belayed(all the auto belays tend to be used) , it's a little slow getting a turn. Otherwise, when slightly less busy, it's a lot of good fun, the problems have a good variety in levels to suit beginner adult and kids
There are a few quality of life improvements that could be made, but if you’re looking for a convenient local rock wall there’s a variety of top rope, lead climbing, and autobelays. (About a third of the routes for each, which is a more than generous number of autobelays if you’re going alone. This is the biggest reason for the high rating since few gyms tend to make that investment!)
Some drawbacks that keep this a 4 and not a 5: The rental harnesses are atrocious; I’d happily pay more to rent a real harness. The AC is very poor given that it’s the top floor so if you’re not used to hot and humid is quite uncomfortable. Most of the gym is geared towards new, younger climbers. It’s awesome to get new generations in but there’s a lot of etiquette errors you have to be on the look out for that can sometimes also be safety concerns. Finally, there are no facilities outside of the mall bathroom on the other end of the floor.
Overall, the pros outweigh the cons, especially if you’re in the area. Be on the look out for deals and packages if you’re here for a short stay or are just trying it out!
Small climbing gym located in a relatively upmarket mall. Lots of autobelay lanes, and plenty of choice for regular top rope belay lanes as well. You don't need certification to climb as a first timer, but you will need to attend a quick safety briefing prior to starting.
Routes were enjoyable and would definitely return.
friendly crew.. kids love the place which not so crowded.
Nice..
Great briefing and personnel on duty.
