Prior to today, I last saw Dr Tan Seang Beng about 20 years ago at SGH when he was the head of the orthopaedic department there. He confidently made recommendations which were in my best interest and which took into consideration my profile (young - body can repair on its own without any invasive procedures). His approach helped me to recover relatively fast. I was discharged from his care in 2003 and had no problems with my back for the next 19 years of my life. Alas, some unfortunate circumstances led me to see Dr Tan again today. I clearly remember his full name from my encounters with him 20 years ago and I guess that says a lot! As expected, Dr Tan is still as knowledgeable as ever and provided excellent and clear explanations for my conditions. I've come across specialists who are not as knowledgeable who end up downplaying patients' condition/pain. For example, some may directly (erroneously) correlate the extent of the disc bulge with the magnitude of pain experienced which would make suffering patients feel like their experience of severe pain were being downplayed and invalidated. Dr Tan, however, was able to explain that a "tear" may look mild on MRI but if it were located near nerves, the effects of the disc material compressing the nerves may not be that mild after all. He was also thorough with his physical examination so as to make accurate diagnoses and assessment. In addition, one thing that hasn't changed after 20 years was how Dr Tan made recommendations in my best interest. I shared with him my thoughts on exploring the possibility of giving up my "career-long coverage" in govt hospitals for this particular medical condition to go for a one year coverage with him (in private medical institution) and he replied with sincerity that it would be a waste to give up that "career-long" coverage. He even recommended a few good orthopaedic doctors in govt hospitals and shared his thoughts on my treatment plan so that I could consider consulting them to request for those treatments in govt hospitals without having to give up my long term medical benefits in exchange for one year of treatment with him. Meeting such a wonderful human being certainly made my day.

Dr Tan Seang Beng is extremely knowledgeable and helped me recover from severe back pain. His approach contrasted significantly to 3 other back specialists I saw, each of whom wanted to operate. I highly recommend him.
