Reviews of The Better Scoop
Small cozy ice cream & waffles place near nex and serangoon MRT 🧇🌟 always go for the nian gao waffles, which are done well (crispy!) and you can’t go wrong with most of their ice cream flavours
Both the ice cream and waffles here are not too sweet! Ice cream is very creamy and flavours are quite unique too. I also like the nian gao waffles as the bits of nian gao inside go quite well with the fluffy waffle. It gets super crowded from the evening onwards though, so it can be very difficult to find a seat.
Recommended by SIL for this place to grab a sweet bite.
Amazing genius in the mix. Warm mochi Nian Gao that gives you that hint of sugar mixed into the fluff of the waffle… heavenly.
They carry a wide range of unique and amazing ice creams.
We choose camomile with butterfly pea.
Folks, this flavour is OUT OF THIS WORLD.
Feels like a soothing cold blanket around the waffle and Nian Gao mochi.
The crew was amazingly professional. Never rushed. Each art piece was decked out with care and a lot of love.
Thanks
First try. Heard about the niao gao waffle so wanted to try it. Pls note that it might be "seasonal" as indicated in the menu. Went there at about 1.30pm weekday. No waiting time. The place is well renovated. Bright and clear feel. Order niao gao waffle with 2 scoop of ice cream (SGD 15.80). I think most ice cream shop around this price range. The ice cream flavours are unique. I order the 2 flavour in pic and it taste good and not too sweet. The niao gao waffle is different. The niao gao is hidden inside the waffle, chewy. Very different. Should try. No foc water offered. Maybe due to covid. I really like shops that offer free water. Will recommend ppl to try.
Quite a long queue, especially after dinner time but it was so worth it for their delicious niangao waffles! Crispy on the outside and soft and chewy in the middle. Goes so well with ice cream! We got 4 flavours - Biscoff, tieguanyin, baileys and chocolate. Highly recommend the tieguanyin and baileys! Flavourful and creamy. Price is quite reasonable for the quality and amount given.
The location is pretty good too, within walking distance from NEX. Thanks to the staff for accomodating us and being helpful!
Just opened recently, very hard to miss it if you are walking over from Nex. Popped by on a weekend after dinner and the place was full, had to wait a while before could get a table. This place is really shorthanded and there is no one to clear and clean the tables, not sure if it's the owner and the mom running the cafe. Wanted to order waffles and was told the waiting time would be around 30 minutes. Of course when there was only 1 machine and 1 person preparing the waffles, presuming if every table ordered one.
That aside the main purpose was to try the nian gao waffles. A little disappointed when the nian gao was too sparse and little. A friend who tried it on a weekday afternoon said there was definitely more and the waffles were not so on the brown side. The flavours of the ice cream was quite interesting with a lot of them associated with teas, wanted to try orh nee but was unavailable. In the end ordered the camomile with blue pea and the sea salt gula melaka. Both were nice but the gula melaka was on the very sweet side.
Had the pipagao latte as well. Unique taste (some might think it's weird but it's actually not) likened to mint and won't be fancy if you tried the pipagao bubble tea from Woobee before. Was also good that there was a special element of texture adding the peach gum, though I was hoping for something more chewy like the pearls.
A lot of unique items here so worth a try.
Reached at around 9:10pm on a public holiday, the place was packed and there was a queue, I was 3rd in line and waited for quite awhile. After ordering, the ice cream and waffles took a long time to arrive, paid at 9:35pm and got my food at 9:55pm.
On the bright side, the pi pa gao ice cream surprisingly went well with the nian gao waffles (which on its own wasn't really sweet and that's a good thing) and with the honey which drizzled along the circumference of the circular plate. The honey chamomile blue pea ice-cream was okay, though we could only taste the chamomile part of it. The texture of the waffles was good. It was somewhat crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Paid $15.30 for this.
Payment options: cash / paynow / paylah.
Paywave not accepted, would have been good if they had paywave or grabpay option.
The nian gao waffle really lives up to its hype, perfect amount of sweetness, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.
The ice cream was just okay, but we didn’t try the famous pi pa gao flavor.
The staff behind the counter wasn’t welcoming. Made me feel like I was asking a weird question when I asked if they have oat milk options for the coffees. He also spoke very softly, even after repeating several times what he said, we still couldn’t get it. Overal the ordering made us feel a bit uncomfortable, but I would still want to go back for the waffles.
Unique waffles and ice cream! The niangao waffles had a nice textural contrast, flavourful and not too sweet. Very slightly overdone but that's nitpicking. Among my top 3 in SG. Was particularly impressed with the ice cream too. Rich full bodied tea flavours. They are not cutting corners here. Get there early if you want to beat the crowds. Lines started to form past 7, prob post dinner crowd.
Convenient location right beside Nex, amazing Nian Gao waffles and creamy tea-flavoured ice cream. This is my to-go place for a good waffle ice cream fix!
I’ve tried most of the flavours here and they are pretty good. Personally like the Earl grey milk tea, honey chamomile & butterfly pea flowers, strawberry chis seeds, chrysanthemum goji berry (but I don’t eat the berries) and dark chocolate.
The place isn’t too big so best time to go is during the day when it’s less crowded. Drinks are meh.
First off, my apologies! My friend and I were too eager to try the waffle and ice cream, so there’s no photo to share—I’m sure you can picture the round waffle topped with a scoop of ice cream. The Nian Gao waffle was fantastic! I paired it with a scoop of umeishu-flavored ice cream, which was an excellent choice. They were so generous with the Nian Gao in the waffle; every bite was packed with it. You’ve got to come and try it if you haven’t already!
tried the pi pa gao. really taste like it, super good!
the waffle cone is at $1, very nice also have de butter taste and crispy 😍 just that mine broke a little hole when they were scooping the ice cream 😰
Tried their Nian Gao waffle and chrysanthemum goji berries, I felt satisfied with both item. Nian gao waffle is nice and surprise me, perfectly match with the ice cream, because the ice cream is not that sweet.
Amazing ice cream, waffle cafe in the heartland. Great service from the staff. Chui Yann with lovely latte art and well presented and great tasting waffle nian gao. Wished I visited the place earlier on the past. Will certainly be back.
Nian Gao waffles were crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Go try it if. You’re a fan of such waffles! Had the chamomile and blue pea ice cream.
Try to go during non-tea timing if you want a seat.
Interesting flavours and concept.
The better scoop seems to bring out the traditional nostalgic Chinese flavours like:
1. Tie Guan Yin
2. Roselle Plum ( Taste similar to eating the San Cha )
3. Luo Han Guo
4. Pi Pa Gao
We ordered Tie Guan Yin & Roselle plum flavours.
Tie guan yin feels like a light tea and milk based ice cream quite similar to drinking milk tea ( Not very sweet, which balance out with the rest )
Roselle plum a little sourish with the plum bits, quite interesting flavour. Initially was kind of wondering why they made this flavour, we feel it kind of balance out from the sweetness allowing you to change your palate while enjoying the waffles & other sweeter flavours.
Our favourite was the Nian Gao waffles, we love chewy stuffs! They made it really well, feels its their unique selling point from the normal ice cream & waffle shop. Waffle is not too sweet giving that crusty outer texture, Nian Gao is sweet giving the chewiness in between. Giving it a similar taste to eating mochi or like injeolmi toast. The feeling of eating together feel comforting and worth the calories 😝
Another unique thing that we had was the honey and chocolate sauce that they drizzled by the side of the plate. Somehow the combination with the waffles makes it more enjoyable eating. Sinful but worth it.

Came here after multiple raves from a friend about this place. Had the Nian Gao waffle with Pi Pa Gao Ice cream and Osmanthus Tea Ice Cream! The place had such unique flavours that I had to try these. The Nian Gao waffles was soo chewy, almost like mochi with the waffle crunch. The Pi PA Gao ice cream worked very well with the waffles and it got better with each bite. The Osmanthus Tea Ice cream had a milder flavour which worked with the combi we had as the other Ice cream flavour was much stronger. It's a flavour I wouldn't actively choose again but I wouldn't say no if offered. Would definitely have the Nian Gao waffle + Pi Pa Gao Ice cream combo again!
This ice scream shop is located very close to Nex mall, in the ground floor of the public carpark, east to access by MRT or find a place to park your car
We love the waffle with "Nei Kao" which did add quite a different taste when tried with waffle and ice scream. Very recommended.
Coffee is nice with reasonable price
We got the regular waffle with osmanthus oolong and honey chamomile + butterfly pea ice cream. The waffle is crispy and tasty, and we loved the ice cream. The ice cream flavours really shine and it was like drinking chamomile / osmanthus oolong tea - definitely one of the better ones around.
finally tried the famous niangao waffle! total damage done for 2 waffles was $29.60!
Niangao waffles - $6.80 / Normal - $6
Icecream - $5 & $6
Cant remember the individual scoops’ price.
Flavours Ive tried: Chrysanthemum, Earl Grey Lavender, Tie Guan Yin, Acai
All of the flavours were surprisingly good and recommended by staff themselves!
Space is pretty small and your friends need to be there together as there will be no waiting for friends, since they have time limit for customers. Overall, i would definitely go again for their niangao!
Here for the niangao waffles, it’s brilliant creation!
Waffles are light with niangao surprisingly not too sweet, the texture feels like a brown sugar mochi within the waffles.
Ice cream too was light and oolong tea flavour was aromatic. This is the kind of ice cream I would like to bring my parents to, being not diabetic-ally sweet 😂
Thanks The Better Scoop for making ice cream enjoyable. The synergy you ladies had makes whole place felt relaxed and comfortable, yet with high efficiency on service (even on busy Friday evening) and quality to food 👍🏻
Excellent waffles, especially the nian gao waffle, highly recommended! The waffle is crisp goes well with the sticky nian gao.
The place offers local flavors for their ice cream like luo han guo, but tastewise is somewhat savory and not something I would go for.
For drinks, we tried the pi pa gao latte and chamomile latte, both came with peach jelly, so it's pretty filling together with the waffle.
Service is somewhat slow with only 2 staff handling the ordering and preparation of waffles.
Overall the ice cream needs improvement compared to the other ice cream places around, but the waffle definitely stands out.
We ordered a normal waffle and topped it with double scoops of lotus biscoff and black sesame ice cream. The black sesame ice cream was very thick and creamy, like the traditional black sesame paste. The waffle was slightly on the chewy side and not very crispy. The biscoff taste, however, was very overpowered because the waffle came with honey and chocolate syrup😓
Had the opportunities to make some custom made sofa and reupholstery work for the nice people here. Great experience.
Small cozy space with great waffles and ice cream! Nian gao waffles are crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside. Ice cream selection is pretty wide, lots of interesting flavours. Tried the pei pa koa mint ice cream and while it sounds odd, I actually loved it!
Plenty of parking on-site behind the store. Relatively short walk from the mrt.
Waffles is crispy and special
Tired 6 flavours all pretty bland - even for flavours such as bailey and coffee
Speculoos flavour feels very buttery and weirdly textured.
Would come back again if the flavours are more flavourful.
Arrived at around 8pm on a Friday evening, glad that there isn’t much of a queue yet and only waited about 5mins for a table.
Ordered the nian gao waffles with dark chocolate ice cream. The dark chocolate ice cream is more of the milk kind, not very “gao”, but not too bad. The amount of nian gao used is quite generous. Almost couldn’t find a bite without nian gao. The waffle batter is a little too “egg-y” for my liking. The waffle texture is more of the soft-fluffy kind than chewy kind, outside is a little crispy, which is nice. I wasn’t able to taste much of the waffle/nian gao after the first few bites, not sure if it is because of the very sweet maple syrup drizzled around the plate.
Overall an ok/interesting waffle experience, but not really my favourite type of ice cream and waffle batter. May visit again if I’m in the area!
Nice nian gao waffle and an interesting selection of ice cream flavours to choose from. Will be back soon for my next scoop!
Accessible location, just a short walk from Serangoon mrt/ nearby bus stops.
Cafe with natural lighting and clean interior.
Closed on Mondays.
Love their Niangao waffles. Will be back. 👍🏼
Nice ambience, walking distance to nex. Waffle was crispy on outside, soft on inside. Had the bluepea ice cream, was light and not too creamy
Ordered a nian gao waffle with two scoops of ice cream, and I had to say the waffles were exquisite, crispy on the outside and similar to mochi on the inside.
There's a wide range of interesting ice cream flavours, with the best ones being Hoegaarden Rosee and cold brew coffee in my opinion.
Overall, quiet and cozy little cafe located in an easily accessible location. Definitely would visit again.
nice ice cream but service abit slow.. service staff not very friendly, but overall good to try.
Love the nian gao waffles (think a little pancake of nian gao within the bigger airy normal waffle) but minus one star because of the absurdly long waiting time from when we ordered till we got our food.
Baileys with chocolate chip: really light, almost vanilla(literally and metaphorically) with a bit of lingering warmth from the baileys. I liked it!
Sea salt gula melaka: Wasnt really salty but could definitely taste the GM
My favourite ice-cream shop so far! Yummy nian gao waffles and light tea-flavoured ice cream can be found here. Worth a try!
Crispy Nian Gao waffles, mochi ice-cream add-on, and a whole palette of ice cream flavours that are non-traditional and also not too sweet. My dating spot to gatekeep
Nian gao waffle may seem like a novelty, but its chewy texture would invite me back again. Honey chamomile with butterfly pea was unique — thought the chamomile taste really stood out here. Dark chocolate was really rich, and it took its time to melt away.
Ice cream were artisanal plant based flavoured very refreshing
Only downside is the aircon was abit cold and seem to be not maintained well hopefully there are susitanabile practices to recycle leftover unsold icecream
Nian Gao Waffle is nice! Ice cream however standard is inconsistent, sometimes yummy sometimes tasteless.
Dark chocolate, sesame, and biscoff are nice
Quite a cosy ice cream cafe next to NEX. Tried the Earl Grey Lavender ice-cream and it was not too sweet. Nice staffs and happy to be back other flavors next time.
Simple and pleasant place for waffles, ice cream, coffee n tea. Nice waffles.
First time, not so attractive as an usual ice cream shop. Staff is really nice. Flavor collection can be developed more. Very calm place to enjoy your favorite dessert.
Love, love, love their ‘nian gao’ waffles. The ice cream is kinda expensive, in my opinion, but its quite worth it for a one-time treat. My absolute favorite flavour is Chrysanthemum - it’s literally the drink in ice-cream form, complete with chrysanthemum flowers too!
May be challenging to find a seating during peak hours and especially on weekends where there is a queue.
Minus one star as I tried their cold brew and it tasted bitter and burnt. Not very good coffee so I’ll advise not to order the coffee.
Just visit for the ice cream and waffles, you won’t be disappointed.
Note that they are closed on Mondays!
Camomille and pea flower? Hoegarden Rosee? Iron Buddha? All these served on top of choice between plain waffle and one stuffed with nian gao.
Definitely coming back with the wife for this.
Went about 1230pm. Place was easy to find just outside Nex, facing the kids playground.
Ordered:
Niangao waffle (came for this)
Honey Chamomile & Butterfly Pea flowers ice cream
Umeshu-Plum wine ice cream (premium +0.50)
Everything tasted spot on!
There's only 1 staff running the place thus I felt service could be better.
Overall place was easy to find, clean and food was great! Hope to bring my preschoolers next time:)
Ice cream is good! However, there could be at least a smile from the person serving the ice cream. Children were just enjoying the ice cream. Classic waffles so good!!
The shop serves gelato ice cream, waffles, and drinks. We thought it was pretty reasonable priced for a scoop of oce cream at $4 and waffle for $6, which is why the shop was packed at around 7 pm on a Friday. We had sea salt banana, cookie and cream, and strawberry chia seed with a waffle. The waffle was made on the spot, so it is warm and fresh. The gelato tastes nice but lacks creaminess. Overall, it was a cosy place with nice gelato.
Will definitely visit again if nearby.
Visit here occasionally. Favourite flavors are osmanthus oolong, black sesame and chrysanthemum goji berries. Super fragrant and tasty. Had a wrong order the other day and they gave a complimentary waffle so kudos to their service too.
Nian Gao Waffle is very good, has many special ice cream flavours.
Wife and I went down yesterday 28/7/23 afternoon at about 2.30pm to try the nian gao waffle. As mentioned in other reviews, it's crispy from the waffle batter and chewy from the nian gao which makes it an amazing experience. There is not much taste from the nian gao, so the ice cream should be paired together. We were afraid the nian gao would be too sweet/overpowering so we ordered chrysanthemum+goji and sesame. Both were great!
What makes this deserve the 5 stars is the superwoman staff who was there handling everything herself: taking orders, making coffee, doing the waffles, scooping the ice cream
She held her ground and showed her focus in her work. Well done!!
Waffles are nice then a lot of places ..ice cream not too bad too....
Waffle Nian Gao is very nice but the environment here is very noisy.
The waffle was crispy and tasted good. A lot of ice cream flavours to select from.
I have visited this ice cream shop on multiple occasions and have found their earl grey and coffee ice cream with waffles to be quite enjoyable. However, I was disappointed with the white peach oolong tea (iced) that I ordered as it lacked any taste despite being charged $5 and no sugar or honey was added. During my recent visit, I found the staff to be unfriendly, despite being busy. Though we helped clear the table, they didn't even thank us. Overall, my experience was average.
Had the nian gao waffle with tie guan yin and chamomile & blue pea flower ice cream. The waffle was good and unique, chamomile and blue pea flower ice cream was quite nice if you like chamomile tea but the tie guan yin ice cream was just average, tea taste not strong enough personally.
A bit on the pricey side but will be back for the waffles again and to try other flavours.
We had the Nian Gao waffles, with Osmanthus Oolong and Tie Guan Yin ice cream. The waffles were tasty, and unique as they cannot be found elsewhere in Singapore. While the ice cream was not bad, the flavours could have been stronger, especially the Tie Guan Yin one. Waiting time can be improved too - we waited 35 min for our waffles, which we felt was too long for dessert. Overall, not a bad experience, wouldn't mind coming back!
Visited this shop on a Wed evening with my kids after reading good reviews online.
1) Ambience - Bright & spacious
2) Food variety - purely a dessert place. Offer a decent choice of drinks, ice creams and a few types of waffles
3) Taste - ordered 4 scoops of ice cream, 1 classic and 1 nian gao waffles. The ice cream was good. But we felt the waffles were overrated. Typical crispy on the outside, soft on the inside kind of waffles which is quite common at cafes and restaurants. The nian gao waffle is just ok. Small amount of nian gao within the waffles.
4) Price - spent $28 on waffles & 4 scoops of ice cream
5) Location - Just next to Nex mall. Walking distance from Serangoon mrt station and bus interchange
Overall, nice place to chill with friends and family. Food wise just ok. Can check it out if you are nearby. Not worth travelling long distance just to try the waffles.
The waffle and ice cream is super nice compare to the other waffle place I went to. The crew is cute and friendly. Short waiting time, more people at night. Me and my friends always come here to eat the waffles and ice cream. Do try it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Small location. But love the niangao waffle. Came back multiple times for it.
Ice cream is creamy and not too sweet. I had the Bailey's and dark chocolate chips. Was refreshing and satisfying.
Awesome crispy waffles. Ice cream also goes well with the waffles
Very good ambience and good air con and lighting for instagrammers.
Overpriced drinks and ice cream.
1 scoop $4.20 2 scoop $8.
Could be considered normal or cheaper than other establishments.
Better to get Ben and Jerry's for example.
Great ice cream at affordable prices. Interior is cozy but a little cramp, and can get noisy when crowded. Strongly recommend the coffee flavor. Will be back a second time!
Went to buy a few pints of ice cream for takeaway. The staff were very friendly and accomodating to our requests. Ice cream was delicious (sesame soy milk was a favourite!)
Good neighborhood cafe! Try the chrysanthemum one, its so refreshing!
Waffle is good. Got chewy nian Gao. But the ice cream is normal.
Very good quality ice cream and waffle. Have some unique flavour to choose from
once in a while nice to jiak ice kream
Nice coffee and ambience.
Try the mochi waffle
Came here around 8:30 on a Friday night and it was packed! !
We ordered a rice cake waffle with double balls of Tieguanyin and loquat cake ice cream.
Really delicious! The rice cake waffles have a light burnt aroma and are chewy on the inside. Goes great with ice cream.
Tieguanyin is like milk tea ice cream, and the loquat cake does have a strong cough syrup flavor, as it should. My favorite is Tieguanyin with waffle rice cake 🧇 👍🏻
The niangao waffle is delicious👍🏻 I recommend the osmanthus olong and coffee ice cream🔥
Nice waffle 🧇
The rice cake waffles are very special and taste delicious.
Nice nian gao waffle and gula melaka ice cream
The traditional rice cake waffles are highly recommended! 👍👍👍
