Reviews of Whampoa Makan Place
It has been a long time that I last visited this food Ctr. My usual food here will be duck rice, Chinese rojak and Hokkien mee. Tried fish hot pot a few times also. Not bad eat. 😀👍
A very good place to come here and try some local food. This place has a lot of options in terms of eating and drinking. The rates here are very, very reasonable compared to the other restaurants that you will find outside. The service is super fast but finding a table can be a little difficult during the rush hour period. The food is really delicious and the quantity is quite good for the price. They also have a market that is connected to this place where you can buy fresh meat and fresh produce.
as a tourist, i would love to try every local food whenever i go.. This place is absolutely full of local delights. I truly recommend this place if you want to experience live like a local.. You can see a lot of local people in this place', and some stalls had a long ques.. worth a try.
This hawker centre comprises two parts - block 90, where stalls open for lunch and dinner, and block 91, whose stalls mainly cater to the lunchtime crowd. This writeup pertains only to stalls in block 90.
Stalls liked:
- Balestier Road Hoover Rojak (#01-06). Might be the best rojak I’ve ever had, though that’s not necessarily saying a lot. Belying its unappealing appearance is a balanced and complex medley of contrasting textures, from crisp youtiao and slurpable jellyfish. I liked the finely shredded calamansi skins too. Century egg was a bit much, though. In all, moreish and definitely worth a return visit. Get with chili if you can take it.
- Huat Heng Fried Oyster (#01-26). Generous helpings of oyster and the all important starch, which is a crucial part of the textural experience of the dish. The tangy chili provides a good accompaniment.
- Nyonya Chendol (#01-17). An excellent bowl of chendol, with shaved ice that’s so finely shaved it melts in your mouth like a cloud. Goes to show when 60% of your dish is a single ingredient it pays to get it right.
- Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee (#01-32) efficiently serves up a plate of sloppy hokkien mee goodness, though I actually think it’s overshadowed by the Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (#01-59) on the next row, which, despite being a touch drier, has better quality prawns and a slightly more pronounced wok hei flavor. Shorter queue too.
So-so to meh:
- Kim Huat Teochew Beef Noodle (#01-51) serves up a hearty, satisfying version of the titular bowl with good chili accompaniment, though the broth lacks some depth and the tendons weren’t braised long enough.
- Uncle Sim Lor Mee (#01-64). No frills lor mee that delivers the requisite silken gravy and toothsome noodles, though accoutrements are a bit on the meager side and the sauce could benefit from a bigger glug of vinegar than is usually warranted. Stall is also a little dingy.
- Liang Zhao Ji Duck Rice (#01-07). Thoroughly mid despite its reputation and queues. Overly crumbly rice and measly portions of duck. The sauce is good but the overall dish just doesn’t measure up to expectations. Accompanying clear broth is great though - aromatic and piping hot.
- Golden Roast Char Siew (#01-81). Ordered char Siew and roast pork on rice with wuxiang. Despite the name the charsiew was cold, dry and flavorless and the wuxiang had an unpleasantly paste-like texture, as if extruded from a die. The roast pork was better though utterly unremarkable. Rice was cold and clumpy. Soup was good though.
- Whampoa Satay Bee Hoon (#01-38). Not the best exemplar of the titular dying dish. Bland and watery satay sauce slathered gracelessly atop a mountain of bee hoon, and no prawn despite it being advertised. Chicken was pleasantly tender, though.
- Viet Quan (#01-50) not sure if off day but the pork com suon was perfectly terrible. Meager portions despite the $6 price tag, but I wouldn’t have wanted more of the food anyway; the dish consisted of a sad soggy, clumpy lump of rice shambolically accompanied by haphazardly cut-up chunks of pork, dry, tough and tasteless as cardboard. Only saving grace was the shallot-fragrant soup.
New Naan stall in Hawker Centre. Give it a try.
They have a stone oven to do the Naan from scratch. Size of Naan is about prata size so probably you need 2.
The Cheese Naan is nice.
Taste of the Butter Chicken sauce is very good. Very authentic taste, full of spices.
Butter Naan + Cheese Naan + Butter Chicken adds up to $8. It's not cheap compared to normal daily meal but also not expensive if you compare to Little India those Naan shops.
New Mr. Kebab stall sitting at corner of the hawker centre.
The Kebab rice and Pita is absolutely amazing.
The Kebab rice is so flavourful with a charred in it. Stall is very generous on the chicken fillings and LOTS of sauces. Very tasty and must try.
Here for fish pot. Value for money and nice food
A busy foodcourt for dinner. Many good stalls of local food. However the standard of the Hokkien Prawn Noodle stall has drop and miserable serving with two tiny prawn at $5.00. The fried oyster omelette is nice and so is the rojak stall.
Lots of hawker food to choose from. Be prepared to wait on weekends, especially the famous "Singapore Hokkien Mee' there is always a Queue. But service is relatively fast
Best Nasi padang since the 1980s
Lots of famed food stalls and some of the Q can be long so be prepared to wait. Limited parking lots if you are driving here.
Always a good choice for food. The chendol was well worth S$2, the Chinese stall selling dumplings was ok. MSG quite heavy handed, and the pork in the XLB has a funny taste to it. The spicy wantons lack ormph of Szechuan peppercorns
About 2/3 stalls open at lunch time.
Plenty of tables
Busy but not crowded n possible to find table for small group.
Parking on site can be difficult. Save yourself time by parking at carpark across the road if dont mind the walk.
Many food to choose from, and many are highly rated stores.
The price was decent $3.50 for a wanton char Siew...
There are 2 food centres, one with the wet market and opens for breakfast and lunch and the other for lunch and dinner. You can still get traditional hawker foods here at reasonable prices. Evenings are usually busy and crowded.
A really bustling food center, most of the stalls stay open for both lunch and dinner. I liked the wide variety of foods available.
Besides the typical hawker cuisine, newer hawkers have come onto the scene to provide their versions of progressive hawker cuisine. This place is well worth visiting.
Great choices of local food, but environment was a a little stuffy with all the smoke from the grill fish and satay stall.
decent prawn mee, open till very late came by at 11pm still selling
It has many stores selling nice foods. And the Lor Mee is surprisingly nice.
Excellent food at an excellent price. Wings highly recommended.
Excellent food centre. Up to 89 stalls to choose your food.
no ac but good food found here
Whampoa Makan Place pleasantly surprised me with its focus on cleanliness – a rare find in bustling hawker centres! Don't miss out on their legendary Hokkien Mee; the noodles, seafood, and addictive chilli sauce are a match made in heaven. Treat yourself to a steaming bowl of herbal soup for a nourishing, flavorful experience. And for the perfect ending, the Nyonya Chendol is a must-have – the shaved ice, pandan jelly, and sweet gula melaka syrup are the ultimate way to cool down. Whampoa Makan Place is proof that great food and a tidy environment can coexist!
Typical hawker environment, a little stuffy but the food let me ignore that. One of the hawkers with the best foods from noodles to egg tarts. Love the egg tarts there btw. Parking is a little issue though, 3 car parks and 2 were full so we had to park a little further away
Topping ingredients are deep fried, prefer the fish to be streamed.
1st time trying the fish slice white beehoon and hoover's rojak. Awesome wok hey taste for the beehoon. Fish slices are fresh and doesn't taste fishy. Love the rojak sauce and ingredients! Will come back for more!
Eaten a western food and hokkien mee over there. It was nice. Recommended
This is my second visit to this hawker center. My first visit didn't leave much of an impression, but today, I noticed there was a wide variety of food there. Since I was rushing, I decided to skip 2 fried hokkien noodle stalls with long queues. I saw a very interesting stall selling steam crabs, cockles, and a few other dishes. It is definitely on my list to visit again in the future to try out more food.
It's an ok place, just like any other hawker places in Singapore. Very close to where I live, so it's very convenient to go and grab food at any time. It offers a variety of food at super affordable prices.
Very Affordable food all around, pretty cooling and the crowd wasn't that big.
As always, Hoover fish soup is the one to go for. Not only it's healthy, and it has this traditional Teochew taste which goes well for all.
Didn't know they have been around since 1975 until I saw the new signboard. I believe there's a reason why they are there for such a long time.
Famous fried hokkien mee and BBQ crabby here
Quite rare to see herbal mutton soup , quite similar to BKT ,not bad the soup
The main place Whampoa residents get their hawker fix. Also popular with people around the island for its offerings.
Some hawker centres are known for certain dishes and are peppered with stalls selling their own takes of those dishes. What you get at Whampoa Makan Place is that there is a great variety of dishes and most of these hawker stalls are great representatives of their specialities.
I've never missed the Teochew beef kuay teow whenever I'm there. Now they also have another Lor Mee stall just opposite the nasi padang vendor and my son truly like it! Cheap and good with generous ingredients and self service condiments! There are many other food stalls too. Just recce and you'll find your needs!
Nice malay chicken rice at a corner of the market.
Floor is dirty, tables too close to each other and most of them not wipe down n Cleaners r rude.
Best variety of hawker food and most of them are very nice... I think it's the best hawker centre in the area.
Alot of nice food to try but parking lot is mostly full
Quite a fair bit of stalls ranging from beef noodle, Indian food, fried oyster omelet (2 stalls-tried e long queue stall which was yummy), fried kuah teow, satay bee Hoon (2 stalls-tried the long queue stall which was yummy), fish soup/steamboat, lor mee (yummy), Malay food (looks yummy), satay, assorted braised pork related, chendol desert, minced pork noodle, mala xiang Guo, western food, chicken rice, fried carrot cake, japanese/Korean bento, duck rice and others
I live nearby. I go elsewhere to eat. Sums it all up. The place is filthy and both diners and cleaners are to blame. The centre management is also to blame because there are so few tray-return racks.
There isn't really any stand out stall in terms of food quality. Worse, prices are on the high side.
Plenty of seats available.
Lots of stalls to choose from, including several famous food stalls.
Great place to have your meals, snacks, tea break, supper, etc.
Parking is limited.
Park at nearby multi-storey car park.
My favourite hawker place for meal. @market famous mee siam, Prawn noodle, fish soup were so good.
Quite the standard array of hawker food stalls here. The famous prawn mee noodle with many award seems like the most famous at here. Taste wise is just ok for me, it inclines to the dry style
Good choice for people who want to try local food 😃
For an authentic Singapore hawker experience. The morning market truly wet/food market combined and great selection of local fare. Parking is convenient though it can be crowded depending on the time of the day. Loads of food reviews, my top recommendations are Mince pork noodles, lor Mee, jwee Kueh, prawn noodles and rojak!
Went there tonight Monday at 9.30pm. A big hawker centre. Many of the stalls are closed. Have a fish soup with rice $5.50. Generous amount of slice batang fish. Rice is rather soft and cold maybe it is at night.
There is a wet market and two hawker centre... One more morning (next to wet market) and the other one more for night.. Lots of "fish steamboat" (鱼头炉)。
The one near wet market also have 鱼头炉 at night and last time I patronized, they even have Teochew delicacy (猪肉冻)which is hardly found...
As always, crowded with diners & drinkers, especially on weekend nights.
Many varieties, spoilt for choices for all kinds of food, including some halal stalls. Famous Fried hokien mee continues to attract long line.
Food fantastic, as always! If you are looking for hawker, this is the place to go! They lost 1 star from my rating due to cleanliness. But even that speaks of authentic hawker, no?
Clean, Good Food, Variety Choices of Food.
Normal hawker center but love the hokkien mee. Tasty, one of the best so far!
Hawker Centre with a wide array of local fare at affordable prices. Be prepared to queue for favourites like fried Hokkien Prawn noodles, BBQ chicken wings, soya bean curd... to name a few.
Tasty food. Dirty place. Lots of pest birds. Sprinkle with a dose of bad attitude (some stores). Ta-da... A truly organic Singaporean hawker centre. Love it or hate it. Best strategy is dine-&-dash 😉
Many places do not serve Satay Bee Hoon, Fried Kway Tiao, Fried Carrot Cake - so my parents love this market. The frief prawn noodle is very popular and always has ling Q. The satay on nearer the carpark always sell out so ive never tried it and the rojak is really good. Its not airconditioned so go in light clothing.
Good old days type of taste and smell love it.
Sells all kinds of food
A lot of varieties of cooked foods. It's crowded during lunch hour between 1noon to 1.30 pm. It's where the so claimed famous Hoover Chinese rojak is located. I preferred to buy the nasi padang malay food. The seving is large portion.
Many good quality food stalls are found here. You can always find queues at the whampoa soya milk stall, hainanese curry rice stall, minced meat noodle stall, lor mee stall, fried carrot sticks stall, fries dough fritter stall and many others. Mostly local fare run by local hawkers.
The prawn noodle is a must try at this food centre. But be ready to queue up for 15mins or more. At this point, if you still feel adventurous, try the braised duck rice. Next goes for the rojak.
Quite a few stalls are very popular with dinners. Limited parking space. Have to be patience. Suggest to park at nearby neighbourhood about 5 to 10 mins walk.
It's a big food center and market. I often ate here, taking times just to see what options that I will buy. The market also offers multiple stuff.
The best nasi padang in Singapore look out for Malay Stall there
Find everything you want to eat here.
The hokkien me is only so so. The satay Beehoon was good.
The ice kachang not as expected.
Food still taste good
The fish is delicious as its presentation.
The maxi spiciness is not to my expectation.
Fish is fresh and the lady is super friendly and caring.
A lot great food, it is a must to come
Popular Hoover rojak, very good soup noodles (ban mian) where the chilli is very spicy 🔥, lor mee and also kway chap. In the evening, the fish steamboat is very popular
Like Kampong Ambien.
Good choices of food and drink. The seafood stall is good. Cendol also good
One of the best hawker centre in Singapore! Lots of great food both in the morning and evening.
Excellent place for local hawker food till 9pm.
The hawker centre is big with many stalls therefore many choices
One of the oldest food centres in Singapore good quality food and friendly people
Whampoa have lots of nice food chengdo , fried oyster , hokkien prawn mee , peanut pan cake and many more . Must try.
Lots of food hawkers and parking lots besides the nearby coffee shops. I'd usually go there for the prawn noodles, duck rice, nasi lemak, rojak, chendol
Wide range of food available. Great hawker food experience.
Very good hawker centre
Love the noodles there. Abit crowded but enjoy the atmosphere there
Good place for value for money authentic hawker food. More selection during lunch time.
Yes yes yes! Always love the Bak Chor Meepok at Whampoa Market. Well cook and the sauce mixed is wonderful! Always back for more.
Gone are the good old days
Food are getting from bad to worst. Only a handful of old stalls are worth visiting.
Favourite handout, anytime for any occasion. It's near 晚晴圆 and Burmese temple, which are opposite Hiap Seng Mall.
A variety of stalls which give diners lots of food choices. Not forgetting the drinks stalls which serve decent beverages.
my favourite juice stall which i patronise everytime i am here
Resonable price and really nit stingy on the quantity
Really big food place with loads of eateries to choose from. I particularly like the dumpling stall.
Went for the hokkien mee but not open on Thurs. Will go again.
It was the first time to eat roasted pork rice here with my family. It was cheap and the queue was very long.
