Reviews of National Gallery Singapore
Great place to visit, time well spent. Housed in former City Hall and Supreme Court, showcasing Southeast Asia’s rich art history through an exceptional collection of modern and contemporary masterpieces. A must-visit if you enjoy art and wanna know about Singapore’s history. Staffs were so helpful and welcoming!
Note: For non-Singaporean visitors, some online platforms that offer General Admission tickets at good discount 😉
It was so fascinating to see all the different styles of asian art displayed! The gallery being inside of two national landmarks, City Hall and the Supreme Court, made it doubly interesting!
Art gallery is set in two historic buildings, the former City Hall and the former Supreme Court. Its a nice use of two important historic buildings. There was a couple interesting special exhibitions of Singapore artists. Very enjoyable.
I had a great visit today with my 12 yr old son. Visited the lim Tze Peng exhibit and had a discussion of the mid autumn festival paintings, the differences and why.
A staff gently approached me near there, and shared that 1 painting is based on memory and the other was drawn on the spot!
It’s not frequent that I have met staff who is able to share about the artwork and I enjoyed my visit today
It was good. Clean. Classy. But one thing its not okay is, u cant enter any glass door just like that. Its too protected. In accesible from one end to one end. Multiple lift arrangements and link bridges. Its sma yet too complicated to reach for places internally. The directieon signs were not that helpful.
amazing gallery with a wide range of exhibits! bf and i went on a weekday so quite a few of the exhibits were under maintenance. however we’re both singaporeans so it’s free for us! so we can always come back on a more popular day. art was a fantastic blend of traditional art forms with modern touches, and exhibits also included historical information of the city hall and surrounding area. defo recommend ppl to check this place out!
Joined the private tour to view the former Supreme Court. Very interesting 90mins session where we explored hidden places not open to public.
The National Gallery Singapore is a prominent art institution located in the heart of Singapore's Civic District. It is housed in two national monuments—the former Supreme Court Building and City Hall—which have been meticulously restored and transformed into a space dedicated to Southeast Asian art. The Gallery boasts an extensive collection, showcasing over 8,000 artworks from the 19th century to the present, emphasizing Singaporean and regional artists.
The museum offers a variety of exhibitions, educational programs, and public events, making it a vibrant cultural hub. Its architecture seamlessly blends historical elements with modern design, providing a visually and intellectually stimulating environment. The Gallery also features several dining options and a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the city, making it a well-rounded destination for both art enthusiasts and casual visitors.
Very grand gallery, most of room can enter for free. I visited during the time had very little paid exhibition, very regret that I have bought the ticket
Brought my kids (ages 4 and 1.5) to the Keppel Centre for Art Education - the hands on activities were very engaging. Staff were friendly and helpful. Appreciate how well maintained and clean everything is, especially considering there is no ticket required to enter.
The interior and exterior of the building are awesome!! The staff are so warm. We love to see students there, they seem so excited with all of the artefact/painting. 🧡🤍
First time visited Museum in Singapore.
Beautiful building and beautiful artwork 🥰
Lots of activities for kids, mostly craft and creativity related. March holidays 2024 there was clay sculpting, drawing, interactive paint brush exhibit, light and colours and shapes exhibits. Got quite crowded as there were after school care centres' kids visiting in a group. Prepare to spend at least 2 hrs here, so much to do and see and play with.
Toilets are clean, there are water coolers available, air con is adequate and not too strong. Lots of museum volunteers manning the various exhibits. Majority of kids activities are free.
Enjoyed the Tropical exhibition.
Enriching, quiet and interesting.
The gallery is very nice and well organized.
Very cold so you should bring some jacket in order not to freeze.
Was expecting more of Frida Kahlo paintings, they had just one in this exhibition.
Exciting, Amazing and unique to explore.
Not enough in 2-3 hours..must spend a day.
Very recommended place to visit in SG!! For those who love art, architecture, or just love to take amazing photos of you surrounded by art haha
Marvelous architectural building with historical smell. Modernized interior with many artistic items displayed. Not congested. However the route to this place was messy and puzzled. Many unknowns artificial intelligence were grouped along and around the iconic building. A bit spooky and spoiling. So worry that they were pickpockets too.
The museum is huuuuge. It has so many galleries, though I only purchased General Admissions but I still spend 3 hours here. I definitely need to come back here again, in case I miss some spots I didn't realize.
FREE entrance! Visit at night for the annual Light To Night Festival 2024 (Open till 8 Feb ✨)
Soak in the atmosphere as you lounge on the grass lawn, appreciate the inflatable saga seed sculptures and view the projections on the museum’s heritage buildings! There will be festival food and performance inside and outside the museum.
some of the galleries are under renovation, this is a place for coffee , a place for kids , a place to take pictures, and a place to visit Singapore History.
It’s a huge place to visit, as there is lots of galleries to explore. The history of the place is interesting as well. General admission is free, with the special exhibition being $15. Overall it’s quite a place to visit.
We joined the free 3pm tour which happened to be on Singapore art. It was beautifully presented and we got a good over view of the development of art in Singapore beginning with it's colonial beginnings. It was such an eye opener to see how contemporary and even historical styles have been appropriated by local artists to suit their message and subject matter.
There was an international children's art exhibition on at the same time. Very inspiring.
Great building and some interesting exhibits. Unfortunately, our timing was off and quite a bit was closed. Also, the restaurants on the top floor do not open until late afternoon.
Not too bad. Had opportunity to see the old classic designs on the floor. They were awesome. If you go to the viewing floor, you can see the whole padang where the VIP sat during National Day parades. You can see some of the buildings of the Singapore skyline in the central business district. And of course the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel
The National Gallery Singapore is a gorgeous venue with plenty of historical information and experiential sign posting to make for an excellent introduction to understanding the Modern Singapore and how it came to be. The venue is large and has a lengthy range of both historical and artistic information for everyone to enjoy. The venue is particularly beneficial to permanent residents that enjoy free entry. Still with the price of admission as a visitor non citizen.
Exquisite, thoughtfully curated art , exhibits and experiences throughout. Welcoming, accessible with clear signage.
ASMR experience was both a surprise and thought provoking. Loved being engaged not just a spectator. History of S8ngapore and arts with different cultures, styles.
Unusually child friendly including a children's hall with interactive experiences and art classes, experiences.
A few restaurants ranging from coffee var to Cafe to rooftop Michelin star with views. Giftshop offers wonderful range of items including much supporting local small artists and businesses. In the grand tradition of museum giftshops, higher priced but also blessedly different than the usual same old endless mass produced cheap souvenirs. Do bring credit card as the shop does not have much change and nearest ATM is a block away.
Only had a few hours - Will allow far more time on the next visit to Singapore!
The world’s biggest collection of Singapore and Southeast Asia modern art that boasts in the beautiful buildings of City Hall and the former Supreme Court.
The visual art institution that will simply blow your mind with a well-organized art exhibition that fully express the artworks in a theme that will dive you into the art and soul of Southeast Asia
Tips: Buy All-Pass ticket that will allow you to access all the exhibitions. It will take a couple of hours to complete the tour but definitely worth every single cent
Get ready for a chic & modern museum experience @ National Gallery Singapore
Visited National Gallery on Thursday afternoon and thankfully it wasn’t crowded so we can tour around the art pieces quietly. Entry was free for Singaporeans however, many exhibits wasn’t open. But the exhibit at basement (Layer By Layer) and level 2 DBS Gallery exhibition was very interesting.
There are children workshops at level 1 too which allows children to enjoy 3D pen and painting for free. The staffs there were very patience in teaching the children and keeping the children entertained. It’s a pleasant experience and will visit NGS soon again.
It was a great experience and I will definitely recommend this place. The place is massive. And it was good to learn about Singapore's history through this NGS.
one of the tourist spots worth visiting. Two historical buildings joined by the bridge house the art gallery. many nice spots for photoshoot.
Wow - what a phenomenal building! The venue itself is a masterpiece let alone the incredible collections exhibited within. Extensive and across multi levels, I spent hours exploring the gallery and returned to capture the sunset in the afternoon from the rooftop terrace
Free admission for Singapore citizens. Very beautiful place. A feast to your eyes. Exhibits are nice and great if you appreciate works of local and Asian artists. There are stations/kiosks for you do art activities. Also play areas for children. Worth spending a day here.
Amazing architecture and the art pieces were beautiful!
Beautiful and extraordinary gallery of Singapore, the experience was phenomenal and the place was so clean. It’s also thanks to a young female staff at the counter name Wahhi makes the ticketing decision easier for us to understand even when we have quite less time to visit the entire Gallery.
Well spent at the gallery, explorr the majestric history of Singapore's colonial era and enjoy the wondrous art, exhibition, installation and architecture of the former City Hall and Supreme Court.
Appreciate our Southeast Asian culture in this vast gallery. plus I got to see our Cambodian artists. And Cambodia history. So much impressed and inspiration.
Nice building & exhibition! Helpful staff!
I have been here a few times. There is much to discover. This time is for Tropical exhibition. Visit was pleasant. I love the tapestry as art. There was 2 macaws too!
went here second time, its nice to spend time here
If there's any great gallery in South East Asia, it definitely is the NGS. The collections there are the embodiment of SEAs human ingenuity. It gets into our senses and emotion. I urge any art lovers to at least visit the gallery at least once in a lifetime. Forget those European galleries. We have an excellent one
right at our doorstep.
The gallery was also featured in a recent TV documentary on the restoration of the buildings. Fascinating to see it first hand. Some wonderful pieces of art. The gallery also overlooked the F1 track from the top floor which was under preparation for the event.
It was beautiful! There's a great range of artworks with focus on southeast asian artworks! Really nice to be represented! The "guards"/workers are suuuuper helpful as well by including more information unprompted!
Went to the Children's Gallery which is free entry year round. Fun exhibits for young kids. No crowd at all on a week day afternoon.
This was a real highlight during our stay in Singapore. It showed the history of Singapore from mid to late 19th century to current day through the various art periods of the last 2 centuries. Loved it and recommend it to everyone.
Had fun at Lisa Reihana's work!! Had a nice meal at the cafe and saw some really great artwork at the shop. The downside is that they dont accept cash so not easy for tourist and travellers unless you are willing to cough up the bank fees!
I think this is a must-visit when in SG, but there’s a lot of room for improvement in terms of signs and guiding visitors where to go next, especially if some exhibits are exclusive for certain ticketholders. It can get confusing with all the rooms and we did wonder if we got to see everything or missed some. A visitor’s map would have been useful.
Free entering for any exhibitions for Singaporean, for tourists the top level is the most popular places, you can see the whole marina Bay Area
Peaceful and full.of history. Stepping in like step into the past.
Really excellent, first rate National Gallery. Well worth the admission fee (get a combo for this and the National Museum from Klook and save $$$. Some pretty cool AR adaptations of some of the paintings - the Singapore 🇸🇬 galleries sponsored by DBS (I think) are pretty cool historically too, while the more modern Asian art (🇵🇭,🇮🇩 mostly) were great too.
Two historical buildings merged into an art gallery. Really nice. For me, a map would have been easier to locate as I think some people might miss out some parts. Singapore skyline looks great from upstairs, it was disappointing to see the bar closed.
One of the best visit that i did on my trip! I purchased my ticket on klook beforehand and i just need to go to the reception desk, and they gave me a paper bracelet as the ticket! Went to all the exhibition, definitely worth worth worth the walk! The building itself is veryyyy beautiful. Gonna visiit here again if i ever go to SG again later!
One of the best Gallery that I have ever been because I have never seen so sincerely amiable and helpful staff. Collection is great too: it covers about 200 years and shows the development of Singapore art. Moreover, artworks descriptions wrote in straightaway manner without using many special terms but telling a story of artwork with social context.
A most wonderful gallery. It gives a in depth picture in the art that has been colected in Singapore. It also gives insight in to the architecture of the gallery itself. The art that is ecibited is original and very clearly Asian. For us European a very good insight in to this place and its history. A must see in Singapore.
A great way to spend a few hours in Singapore if you’re into artwork.
My family and I weren’t huge on art, but this place was so beautiful. S$20 to access the entire museum, but S$5 off for students and teachers - nice! Incredible building and interior, it could take probably 3 hours to explore all the galleries so it would be a good day-activity. Recommended!
Memorable visit!
I enjoyed it there, lots of things to see. It is very intriguing even for non-art lovers. Spent my time looking around and time flies by unknowingly.
Recommended, 5/5 from me
The National Gallery of Singapore is a quiet and calm space, but it is full of lively and passionate paintings
What’s this place all about?
National Gallery Singapore owns the largest public collection of modern art in Southeast Asia. The focus here is on Singaporean and Southeast Asian art from the 19th century to present day. There are always temporary exhibitions; past lineups such as Chinese calligraphy, and Vietnamese lacquer painting.
Nice rooftop views, nice artworks of South East Asia. Buy tickets on Klook at $14
I'm not a aet museum person but I enjoy this art. The building is well maintained and clean. It's wonderful experience. A stunning collection of SE Asian galleries tracing a journey through the political and socioeconomic process of each country. Special exhibition of Australian First peoples artwork was exceptional as a visiting Australian. Was also an exciting moment to see 2 pieces from an artist that i personally know.
Fun for the toddler. For the dads, baby changing at the far end of the children's section so need to enter from the visitors desk side. The public toilets are at the far side from the gift shop and cafe. You can chance going through the 'exit only doors' if you miss it.
A very great place to spend the day if you admire the arts.
Was very surprised that I got to see an impressive collection on Indonesian works such as from Affandi to Sudjojono. Was even more impressed that original models of monuments in Jakarta by Edhi Sunarso, such as the Dirgantara Monument and the Liberation of West Irian Monument, on display here.
Don’t miss the library too, which is only open on the weekdays.
Amazing collections at one of the most amazing gallery. Enjoyed the paintings and the arts at thd National Gallery.
The building has very very nice architecture.
The rooftop terrace on 6th floor is also very scenic looking to the Marina Bay Sands direction.
We booked the back of the house tour and our docent, Linda was amazing! She was interactive, funny and engaging. I learned and enjoyed so many facts about Singapore and its history. My foreign guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly too and all of them gave positive feedback.
Came to see some music & light show last night. Its really amazing. Hypnotising! The Place is also good to go for some art shows to. There's not much shade to walk to the venue, so hope for good weather. Or carry some umbrella. ❤️
A must visit for all visitors to Singapore. An art museum situated in the former Supreme Court of Singapore. One will get to see the remnants of British influence in Singapore as well as art from all around the region. Highly recommended!
And also check out the temporary exhibitions that refreshes from time to time.
We visited the National Gallery given many recommendations from friends. I love the interactive experience with digital arts, by touch and sound. There's also a children's section where you can "upload" characters you created yourself to a digital canvas. We can also select art pieces which we like to send a "poster" to ourselves. These are certainly pleasant surprises and experiences, not quite what I expected from an "art gallery". We didn't plan enough time to explore the entire gallery, so a return visit is a must.
The gallery boast a awesome vast collections of beautiful and important artworks from around the world but mostly from asia and south east asia. We think it's worth to allocate the whole day to explore and really enjoy this place, especially since the admission ticket is 20SGD+. The gallery is truly a world class establishment, where one can relax, learn, admire, and definitely acquire a memorable experience. It is equipped with necessities like locker room, restaurant, etc. It is located in one of the most beautiful and historical spot in Singapore. With the admission ticket, we can already join numerous free guided tour as well as use the audio guide so it's not actually expensive if you think about it. We had a big breakfast, then come to the gallery from 10.30 am until 15.00 skipping lunch so I can maximize my time with the artworks. I had to finish my visit early because of my flight back to my home country. But definitely I will visit this place again during my next stop in Singapore. I am glad that such lovely museum/gallery exist in South East Asia, as it reminds me to the likes of famous museums in Europe.
The building is also nice. You can learn about the history of Singapore. The art work is also wonderful. I definitely want to see it next time.
Unfortunately, there are two buildings and I could only see one this time.
United by a stunning canopy of aluminum and glass, the buildings of the old city hall and the Supreme Court now host the country's largest exhibition space for visual arts with its 64,000 m2. In the dome there is a very large library. On the roof we have a superb view of Singapore and the Marina Bay Sands which is the flagship element with its 3 55-storey towers connected by the Sky Park.
The art gallery where Wangmei checked in has many exhibition halls of different styles, where you can appreciate the development of Singaporean art and modern art style.
It’s a beautiful building. It’s worth walking around and taking photos, both on the outside and inside.
Thanks to the National Gallery and all the staff, especially Mrs. Sheila and Mr. Mitch, I experienced a beautiful day full of emotions and discoveries. A journey to an architecturally unique and artistically alive place that allows the visitor to cross space and time in the most important art museum in South East Asia. The meeting with the Cambodian artist Vann Nath is thrilling. Having read his biography and seen one of his works in person made me remember how important cultural spaces like the National Gallery are. A stop not to be missed if you are visiting here. Thank you!
It's a good idea to check out the hourly tour. It's very interesting and helped a lot in improving my understanding of the building. The building is very pretty.
