Reviews of 风盛炒粿条 Fong Sheng Fried Kway Teow
This is a decent plate of Char Kway Teow over promised by its fragrance. In fact they smell so good that I gave up my queue from their neighbour stall to try the CKT here. The appearance matches its fragrance but the 1st bite brought me back to earth. It had little wok-hei that diminishes fast and the rather one-dimensional taste over reliance to the dark sweet sauce. But con aside, the lacking of wok-hei probably contributed to the crunchiness of the beansprout and the sizeable cockles.
This Char Kway Teow has a unique taste... it's rich in egg flavour, NOT too sweet, nice tinge of saltiness, a hint of pork lard smell (but no large chunks of pork lard--no fear of heart attack) and the beansprouts is heavenly. I really loved it, and highly recommend it!!! The couple is old, so go before they retire.
The key to this old man CKTeow, who have been doing this for all his adult life, is BALANCED, it's not too sweet, too salty, too wet or too dry, it's just well-balanced. And the blend of the dark sauce and chilli is just so good.
For the wet CKTeow--the best is Marine Parade Apollo, and the dry one would Lao Fu Zhi in old airport road, but Fong Sheng is in the middle. I like it very much, even though I prefer the wet one.
Frankly in this day and age, they should charge more $4 or $5 would not be a problem for most--especially with the taste you get. IMHO better than the Outram Park CKTeow in Hong Lim. Man, it's just too much pork lard, and salty.
And most of all, really a plus point that you will not find anywhere is--both the lady and the man, they are very PEOPLE ORIENTED! They are warm, jovial and very personable. They talk to the customers. This gives people another reason to go back there to eat it again soon.
For those of you who are not vegetarian, yes they have fish cake, cockles (disguesting sea suckers), and the cholesterol filled preserved pork sausages.
Can be a tad sweet for some folks but it's still a tasty, flavourful plate of char kway teow with strong "wok hei" and generous ingredients of lap cheong, bean sprouts, egg, fishcake, and a few cockles. It's slurpingly good - at $3.50 for small and $4.50 for big. Stall is owned by a friendly elderly couple. The busy elderly stallholder still had time to say thank you when you paid for your order. Always a long queue so come before the lunch crowd.
Friendly couple that deliver their dedication on their fried kway teow for more than 50 over years ! Nice wok hey ! Using vege oil healthy n delicious !
Very friendly uncle makes my appetite increases incredibly. Good size cockles with all the traditional 'liao' brings me back to my childhood. The freshness of the bean sprouts added extra crunch to the plate of ckt. Loving it!
Value for money at $3 per plate.
Nice wet noodle.
Stall owner is friendly and helpful.
Saw him personally serves the disabled customers to his table.
One of the best I have ever tried. Managed by elderly couple. Walk up from the carpark and you will hear uncle hissing and popping his pan!
