Reviews of Lai Heng Fried Kuay Teow & Cooked Food (#02-20)
The char kway teow here is really good! I loved the mix of flat noodles with the yellow ones, and the portion is pretty generous too, especially for the price.
The wok hei wasn't super strong, but the balance of flavors was spot on—sweet, savory, and not too oily. And oh, those cockles... fresh and juicy!
I recommend adding the handmade otah! —it's a spicy, smoky twist that I didn’t expect, but it works so well with the noodles.
My only gripe? The queue can be long, so be prepared to wait, but trust me, it’s worth it!
Watched a Tik Tok review and decided to give it a try. Slightly above average CKT, the 4 star was due to the availability of a pretty good otah.
The Char Kway Teow is slightly on the wet side. It's good but not outstanding—I'd rate it 3.5 stars.
Very decent char kuay teow here, at $3/4/5 its very resonably priced, however for big eaters it might not be enough, once I was very hungry and asked for $7 portion, uncle was very nice and obliged. They have homemade otah here which is very delicious as well.
I happen to pass by this hawker centre, hunting for lunch. I saw a long queue on the lai heng fried kuay teow stall. After joining the queue, take me about 20 min to collect my food. Order a plate of $4 fried kuay teow and add on 1 otah for $1.20.
I feel the fried kuay teow not bad but the otah is nice. Do try if you happen to be around this hawker centre.
Jan 2024: we came at an odd timing but there was a queue! Was served one of the last plates before they closed for the day. A tad too sweet for my liking. Had a slight wok hei but I have had better CKT.
First time visit here and saw the long queue. We are undaunted and decided to join. Not disappointed at all as the queue moved quite fast because the char kway teow was fried in batches. We ordered $3 serving plus $1 for their otah. Generous with cockles. Well fried, not too dry or too wet, just nice. This place is recommended. We want to come back again to this market and explore further.
Local style Char Kway Teow. Looked popular with a reasonably long Q and decided to try. Did not disappoint. Can taste the various ingredients coming together with wok hei.
This place is rather out of the way, I had to make extra turns to get here from the Upper Thomson MRT Station. When I arrived at the store, there was a queue, ranging from students to seniors. I ordered a non-spicy char kway teow. At a glance, the amount looks generous. I like my char kway teow sweeter, so I like this one. I felt full after finishing the whole plate. It is a good plate of char kway teow which you can get in the neighbourhood.
Wet char kway teow with a traditional taste. The not so traditional thing is you can add an otah to your noodles, which surprisingly worked =)
Not the best but nonetheless a decent plate of CKT. No adding of extra cockles allowed. Taste was smokey and good amount of charr. Good value for money.
Very old school taste of CKT. Not much of wok hey but generous in cockles thus the umami flavor. Portion is relatively small. Otah was average. Overall not too bad.
This is my favorite fried kwayteow. At only $2.50 or $3, the portion is big. I especially like the right dampness, which is not oily too. The taste is just right. I think it's about the sweet dark soy sauce they used.
The otah at $1 each is also just nice to go with the plate of kwayteow.
There's always a long queue during lunch hours. However, be assured the wait wouldn't be too long.
3.5 stars. Average plate of CKT. Moist, generous in ingredients but lack in flavour. If there is more black sauce, it would taste better.
Still the best fried kuay teow ever! The specially made otah together with this traditional hawker fare is a match made in heaven! Have been eating this for years and the standard is still very good!
More on the wetter and milder side in terms of cook and taste. Good balance or sweet salty but the wet texture reduces the wok hei that brings everything together. Some may prefer this compared to the very heavy flavored ones out there. Quantity good value for money from 3 dollars and up. Sufficient ingredients especially beansprouts. Turnover also fast with each packet.
Awesome and cheap Char Kway Teow located in Shunfu Estate.
Be sure to order an Otah to go along.
Generous portion for 3 Sgd. My favourite char kway tiao. Still have the 'traditional' or '古早'taste. Found it very similar in taste to outram ones which I have eaten when I was a kid. Try!
Delicious Singapore styled cha kway teow (Charred Fried Rice Flat Noodle with Dark Sweet Sauce) . Ingredients included bean sprouts, Chinese sausages and cockles. On top of it, you can add on a local made mackerel Otah for $1.20. The kway teow has the right wetness and with the aroma of pork lard.
This stall has been my love eversince my youth days, and still very much the same taste after so many years in this ShunFu estate although I no longer live in this neighborhood. The price are still very much the same at $3, 4 and 5. This is the best part. The aroma of chilly is still the same type. And unless requested, the sweetened black soya sauce is added at just the right level to bring out the taste.
Added with their self-made otar otar, the combination suits many taste-buds ...
Lastly, try to dine-in instead of takeaway...you'll appreciate the flavour.
Not my favourite fried kway teow, but it is cheap and super fast service, and also has adding otah as an option.
Fast service because they fry the kway teow as one big wok and distribute into many plates. Unlike the better fried kway teow which are fried meticulously plate by plate, hence take a lot more time.
My fried Kuay Teow in Thomson area. A must eat local delicacies which is harder to find now
Excellent plate of CKT even though it's cooked in batches. Add on the otah for the extra oomph in your meal!
Char kuay teow is good and reasonably priced. The 'hum' are small and few though.
Otah is great. But the char kway teow lacks wok hey. Nothing to rave about.
Love the fry kway teow here. Not too sweet with enough lard and slightly wet made perfect to enjoy! The cockles doneness just about right with noodle fry with wok hei. The spiciness just right and you can add the otak if you like. $4 quite a good deal and prepare to queue during peak lunch hour.
Good plate of CKT if you like the wet type, but I prefer the dry wok-hei laden type, so 3-star rating from me for Lai Heng. The otah was a good value additional $1. Interesting combination that you don't get at the other CKT powerhouses...
Portion for $3 with cockles. First time trying as highly recommended. Not too bad. A bit on the wet side, maybe cos tabao back got condensation.
Tried the otah, not II bad for $1.20
Where to find $3 char kway teow?
Big portion and otak are available, too.
Served hot and fast.
Come quick before conditions change.
very good value n nice otak. Chef is fast but preferred a bit more wokhei on the noodle.
One of the best fried kway teow in Singapore. Its very moist not the usual dried black version. Cockle is very fresh and just right. Not over cook. Some kway teow tasted slightly sweet. This version is NOT sweet. Expect super long queue during lunch hour or morning.
Good char kway teow. The cockles were small but fresh. S$3 for large plate. Cannot request extra cockles. S$1 for otah, which tasted fine but was smallish.
Well fried with good wok hey. Basic ingredients, queues can be a bit long during lunch hours. Above average enough for a short detour for lunch.
Love the fresh cockles spread on top of the kway tiao. Very delicious and good portion for price paid. Otah was good too.
Nicely fried and didn't have have to wait long.
One of the best and remaining old skool wet char kway tiao left in Spore. 👍🏻👍🏻
Reasonably good , lack wok hey
Great food! Great portion! The small portion should be good enough for many. Go with their otah, you will never be wrong.
This great taste has been preserved for so long. I have been having this occasionally for almost 30 years now. The only char kway tiao I eat without guilt!
The best ckt one will always love!
Ok ok la. Salty and no wok hei. Only accept cash.
Cheap fast good. Very nice ckt. Much better than many neighbourhood stalls and at half the price!!! Worth it.
Not too oily. Fresh cockles. Portion is big. Pack with ingredients
Long queue but it moves pretty fast. Best char kuay teow ever!
A good plate of char kuay teow with reasonably sized servings.
Fresh ingredients and generous portion. Definitely will come here just to eat this
Above average at affordable price
Good fried kuay throw a little on the sweet side hv good "wok hey"
Pretty decent
Nope, it’s Tuesday and they’re not opened today; and it’s already at 11.30am
Think sat sunday one nicer than then weekday
Large portion for $3 . Not a long wait despite a long q.
Good fried kiay teow. Good price
Tasty, large portion, quick cooking
S$3.00 for this portion is a steal
Decent portion with fresh ingredients.
