Reviews of 戚师傅 Chef Chik, Haig Road
Long established stall serving Cantonese style dishes. Overall food quality and prep was good - fish fresh although the prawns were not quite so , veg was perfectly blanched with slight seasoning with the stems sufficiently soft but not limp. In an old hawker centre which can be warm on a hot day. Stallholders friendly and pleasant
Found out about this stall through CNA's Belly of A Nation. Came down to try on National Day.
The steamed fish and sotong dish were specials of the day. We also got steamed salted fish with pork patty, a vegetable and 2 soups for the meal. All the proteins were great and they are what I will come back for. There was nothing spectacular about the vegetables. For the soups, I preferred one over the other as the one with 泡参 got bitter over time and I couldn't finish it.
Will try again if I'm nearby, but might be difficult because they only have lunch service.
Hard to fully express how good this gem of a stall is. The threading belly is steamed to perfection and well seasoned. The steamed minced pork is very generously salt fishy - which is great cos a lot of ones out there don't have enough. So simple and so good.
If you have not eaten this, I would highly recommend. I have seen good reviews by various food bloggers and I finally tried it myself after some failed attempts (you can see in one of the picture for the operating hours so as not to get disappointed by a wasted trip). The steamed threadfin belly is mind-blowing. The real thing looks even more impressive than what they show on the sign display. It is so soft and fatty and every piece is a pure enjoyment. The salted fish meat patty has a good texture, and though it is somewhat salty, it is one of the best I have eaten and perfect with steamed rice. The ABC pork rib soup is extremely good too. It’s such a satisfying meal.
Very yummy salted fish minced pork. One of the best I've eaten. Meat paste is well blended, nice soy sauce and a generous piece of salted fish.
authentic Hk cuisine, 👍🏻. i missed its claypot rice, the stall doesn’t sell it anymore 😩 do take note it doesn’t open everyday. pls check google for its operating hour & day.
Incredibly fresh and tasty food that’s seasoned just right. The tiger prawns and fish tail were steamed well (not rubbery). Even the unassuming plate of kailan was delicious. Waiting time may be a little long and the prices may be a little steep compared with regular hawker fare, but it’s worth it. These dishes beat the steamed seafood I’ve had at Chinese restaurants.
one of my favourite food spots ever — would pick his steamed dishes over most of the fried delicacies out there any day! idk how the chef makes every dish so immensely savoury but light on the palate; it really is a testament to his culinary skills. we are in particular avid fans of the threadfin fish belly, black fungus chicken and steamed prawn with cheong fun :) my dad loves the steamed minced pork patty too! some might say the price tag is steep for hawker settings but I believe that the quality more than justifies it. repeat customer of >10 visits ever since my family found them and definitely more visits to come :)
Very fresh , very smooth 马友鱼腩!Makes me think of my granny’s 马友鱼腩j where I used to eat for lunch during my young days! Just that my granny plucked out every single small bone using 扭耳钳 ( tweezer)! We usual eat style is steaming it with 梅菜 & this is the normal 酱蒸
Had two meals there in two weeks and both times were a great experience with Chef Chiks amazing menu lf steamed Cantonese style dishes! The soups are great but the meat patty and threadfin belly are definitely highlights. With the local weather I'd definitely recommend eating early at 11ish to beat the crowd at Haig Rd Market. Take note of the shorter opening hours though! It's alot of intense work for a team of 2 in such a small space so alittle wait should be understandable and besides, it's going to be worth it.
Old school Cantonese steam and serve dishes. Many classic and new surprise . Steam prawn with chee cheong fan is ingenius. The chee cheong fan soak up all the juice of the fresh prawns giving it a new favour to it . Steam fish and chicken is faultless . Vegetable is only ok. Soup is masterful too.
Good food. Slightly long wait and limited seating at peak hours.
One of the best steam dishes in Singapore. Must try. Be there earlier. Reach at 11:20am manage to get my dishes at 12:00 noon.
Definitely will be back again.
Homeome-cooked Cantonese cuisine by Chek Chik, serving restaurant quality delicious food in a hawker centre. Food runs out pretty fast and expect a queue and long wait for your food. Try to get there before the peak lunch hour crowd descends on the hawker centre. Our meal came to about $70 in total.
Simple Cantonese dishes which warms the heart.
The soups are good but was all sold out when I went at 130pm. Love the fish head (chopped up pieces) cooked in bean sauce, steamed meat pattie and baby kai lan. Best with a bowl of white rice!
Wow, the steamed threadfin fish is very good. Sauce just right n fish steamed just right. It's a strong tasting sauce, so it goes well with white rice.
Die die must try!
They open short hours, so catch them when they are open. Also dine in don't takeaway, steam fish must eat immediately, else is fishy when cold or fish too hard when overcook during reheating
The store serves simple steamed seafood. Since there are only a few choices you can either do a big bang or try a couple per visit.
I came for the fresh fish belly, minced salty pork and the vegetables. They are a homely combination you’ll definitely enjoy.
The waiting time is also not that long and seats are readily available. It is pretty hot in the hawker centre so dress appropriately.
Went here on Saturday lunch (around 12:30pm) and ordered steamed threadfin belly. It tasted good and fresh. Also, not too salty.
I was told by the friendly lady owner to back to my place and collect it later as they needed 15 mins preparation.
Honest and homed cooked feels.
Portion is generous for 4 pax. Recommended!
The steam fish dishes were excellent. Can't blame the atmosphere on the stall cos it's a hawker centre - just be careful of where you sit (avoid tables under the beams where the pigeons hang around).
Had my lunch with my family. Mom loves it although staying pretty far she will come back regularly to patronise. Ordered my meal at 12.05pm but mom was late so I requested for the lady to start cooking only when mom arrive. Lady was very accommodating and friendly. Asked me to tell her whenever we are ready to have our dishes cook. Finally after 1.5 hour my mom reached and our food came within 10 minutes. The fish belly and the prawn was wow! Not a fan of 肉饼. The Veggie was very nice too . Highly recommend to eat 👍🏻
Superb Cantonese cooking! All the steamed fish dishes are very well done with the texture velvety (smooth/slippery in Cantonese). Go for the tail or belly for less bone. Steamed chicken and salt fish minced pork are also delicious. Garlic vegetable is fresh and crunchy. Altogether a very satisfying meal. Salute to the CHEF!
The steamed dishes are cooked nicely. Ingredient is fresh too.
Always coming back for more when we miss Cantonese food. Great restaurant level food with hawker pricing. Fish belly and prawns are things that must try!
Had the steamed fish head. It was huge, very freh albeit a bit pricey, good for 4ppl to share. But you can try the other popular item of steam fish belly marinated with black bean and ginger for 2ppl.Kai lan was well executed, texture was not hard but very crunchy. The small plate of mnced pork was flavorful and would also recommend the marinated chicken w black fungus and the various tasty soup too. Dishes are not salty and suit everybody's palate Be prepared for the long Q and long wait as the chef does everyth from preparation to cooking all by himself. .at least 20mins after placing an order. Do come early to avoid disappointment.
Finally fated to eat his dishes; came a few times of mondays and tuesdays & sundays (which is their off days). Prices are seasonal due to their steam fishes and prawns. However, for lunch office crowd, flavourful boiled soups are always a good choice. I tried their black chicken which is sweet and good.
The soup is super tasty, very different from the usual soup stalls. Theirs is more fine and delicate. Prawn is very fresh and matches very well with chee cheong fun, sauce makes it even more tasty!
V delicious local food, portion is a tad small
They serve gooood food! Don't expect to see many dishes there on its signboard. It has a wide variety of soup items but limited meat dishes (less than 10). Only disappointing thing is that they currently open only from Wed to Sat, which means very limited days!
Excellent food. Must try.
kailan and threadfin fish belly is a must try! but do note that there's quite a queue so don't come if you are in a rush/don't want to wait
They have some good quality whole steam fish here. Also had claypot, fish head, and veg which was all too salty and overcooked.
Great value for money very refined food. At a fraction of the price. I look their threadfin belly n black fungus chicken
Nice, abit on the salty side but its suppose to be? Food taste fresh....
Great food. Healthy and steamed. Love it.
Fresh fish good food reasonably priced
