Reviews of Work Lift Balance - Physiotherapy and Performance
I used to have lots of discomfort, tingling and numbness in my hip and leg. Despite seeing the specialist and physiotherapist at my local hospital, nothing seemed to help. That’s when I decided to try work lift balance. After just one session with Mildred, I experienced a significant improvement in my condition. I’ve been training with Mildred for 5 months now and the exercises she has taught me have been very effective. I am pain free now and know how to better manage my condition. I’ve also started to exercise more regularly and am gradually getting stronger. Mildred is exceptionally knowledgeable and always takes the time to answer my many questions, explaining the "why" and "how" behind each exercise. I genuinely enjoy my training sessions with her, and I look forward to train with her long-term! :)
I recently took a handstand class with Jason at Work Lift Balance. The class size was perfect, allowing for personalised attention. Jason was an excellent instructor, breaking down the moves in a clear and encouraging way. I felt challenged but supported throughout the entire session.
I've also had the pleasure of working with Shern previously and was impressed by her sharpness - her eyes are like x-rays! Her expertise and insightful guidance are always eye-opening.
One side note - the cosy ambience at Work Lift Balance is great for someone like myself who tends to feel easily intimidated by exercises lol. I'll definitely be back to explore other classes and services they offer.
I am a fitness enthusiast and love working out in the gym, go for runs, long trail walks, swimming and yoga. I was introduced to Kirtan in March 2022 and we started training with an objective of running better and longer and being able to workout pain free.
Kirtan is very passionate with his craft and has deep understanding of how the body works. He was attentive to my goals and design my training towards achieving it which I really appreciate. He is very generous, always willing to share detailed explanation of the issues that I was facing. He is honest and open in laying out the weaknesses that I have which took me by surprise. He pointed out that my basic posture such as standing and even my walking gait was not right. And all these lead to injuries and pain overtime.
Though I workout a lot; cardio, strength training and yoga 5 times a week, but a lot of my right muscles are not fired up to perform the workouts. Coupled with bad postures and bad ergonomic habits, I faced nagging pain and tightness in all different parts of my body especially my knees, glutes and lower back. I used to wake up with lower back pain and due to the tightness, I have difficulty wearing my pants.
Since training with him, I can see vast improvement in the way my body moves as one paired with proper breathing. Now I can go for long walks, long runs, perform weighted squats, deadlifts without any knee and lower back pain after. More importantly, no more pain when I wake up!
All thanks to his meticulous eagle-eyed training regime.
I would highly recommend everyone to see Kirtan to improve or revive their active lifestyle (especially those who are suffering from injury or develop body aches and you think it’s attributed to aging). It is never too old or too late!
Excellent level of services provided by Shern and the team, and a very well-equipped gym/environment that allows for a wide range of exercises to be done.
I particularly like how the exercises are specially catered to each individual, and how emphasis is placed on addressing the root mechanical problems instead of just the alleviating the symptoms in the short-term.
Grateful for the steady and gradual progress over time, and I am confident that I will continue to move better and better in time to come!
Starting physio sessions with WLB has been the best decision I have made to improve my lower back and knee issues.
Through an in-depth consultation, Mildred had identified the underlying issues in my posture, form and overall muscular imbalances.
Apart from sharing the various myofascial release techniques, Mildred has been meticulous in ensuring good form is maintained when performing exercises. The cues taught has improved my mind-muscle connection and this has transferred over to my regular exercise routine where I am now able to see better progression.
Would recommend a consultation if you are interested in improving your overall well being. You’ll be in safe hands with WLB!
Shern and team are amazing. I was introduced to WLB by my own client in a climbing workshop that I was leading. As a client of WLB for at least 1.5 years, my expectations have exceeded. My climbing is not only better but Shern has helped me build my overall fitness, and I am nearly 30. Whatever effort you put in to do the work outside of your session, Shern does double of that. Don't expect spoon-feeding or clickbait promises of easy recovery (if you do then maybe physio is not for you). The journey to STACKEDness is life long and takes hours of practice. It's a partnership between you and the WLB team. Their goal is to get you moving pain free and better than before, so you can do what you love. The price is more than what you might be used to but it is well worth the long term benefits and injury prevention. Suitable for all but I'd say especially so for women of all ages who face challenges in building fitness. Suitable for climbers who suffer from pain as well.
I really enjoy training with Kirt, and he make sure I do it correctly. Strengthen my body overall to prevent back and leg pain which I had many years. He is very knowledgeable in his work. Thankyou Kirt!!
I had pretty bad lower back pains and I came to Work Lift Balance for help. I didn't want to see a chiropractor for temporary pain relief. I wanted a long-term solution that was sustainable.
Shern introduced me to the philosophy on getting and staying Stacked. She is passionate about keeping your body in the correct alignment through rehabilitative exercise and I am so grateful for the skills she has taught me. I still experience some back pain, but the intensity and frequency has greatly reduced, thanks to the knowledge she has imparted. Thank you Work Lift Balance!
While most people look for 'quick fixes' to their aches and pains, Shern's practice goes much deeper than that. Her approach to injury and pain management has changed the way I look at my recovery process. I have personally been seeing Shern regularly for a while now, and we are continually working on improving big-picture things.
By focusing on the macro, I find that the micro falls into place naturally. I was struggling to flex my knee after a tweak four months ago. I am now back to my regularly scheduled programming. My aches and pains are not yet completely eradicated, but are very manageable now. With Shern's treatment and guidance, I've certainly come a long way in my recovery.
I am a semi-active person, but I can whole-heartedly recommend WLB to you regardless of where you lie in the gamut. From untrained individuals to elite athletes, there isn't a minimum fitness requirement nor maximum threshold to #getstacked
I was referred to Shern at Work Lift Balance to help fix an old shoulder injury but I ended up fixing loads of other stuff I didn’t even know needed fixing! Shern is awesome. She is kind, funny, professional, super clear in explaining what you need to do and why, a bit scary if you don’t do your exercises (which is a good thing), but mainly she’s an incredible physio. After 8 sessions I have significantly improved mobility in my shoulders and back, zero pain anywhere, I’m not STACKED just yet but I’m working on it! 💪🏻 I’m now building my core strength and stability and will definitely be going back to see Shern to help boost my performance and technique further. Have recommended Shern to friends who have also seen fantastic results so believe the hype!
Highly recommend! Professional, knowledgeable, observant and personable! Shern & Kenneth have helped me gain a better understanding of my running technique and focused a lot on strengthening the weaker muscles through simple exercises that can be performed at my own time.
I had a shoulder dislocation which was very uncomfortable. So i had to go for physio to get it recovered and better. I can say that this place has definitely improved my shoulder and compared to the previous rehab that I had which only focused more on my shoulder. My trainer showed the different areas connected to my shoulder which needed improvement and slowly but surely my shoulder started getting better and less uncomfortable. If You have any problems, dont be afraid to share it with the trainer here as they will also give you a better idea/image on the discomfort you feel.
Duration: Thrice weekly classes at WLB for 3 months. Only skipped 2 lessons due to public holidays.
Context: Had upper body (back, shoulder, neck) pain for about 10 years. Tried weekly tuina (deep tissue massage), physio, pilates (twice weekly). Pilates helped but the pain came back about 2 days after each class.
What led me to even walk in was that WLB is very open about sharing information via social media on how to help yourself. I liked the clear explanations (not fluffy).
Movement assessment: Shern was friendly, attentive and clear in explaining. No fluff. Gave me confidence to get a 3-month package on the spot.
Physio sessions: I didn't have to do it, so no feedback.
Small group sessions (more points, so breaking them down):
1. Personal feedback
Truly appreciate that Shern and Mildred try to be available before and after class for questions. If any student has a particular issue, they will talk one on one to the student and give advice (e.g., be careful of overarching lower back in class and daily life) It's not part of "paid time" and shows the "above and beyond".
2. Class attentiveness
Sometimes if you're weak (like me), you get reduced weight workouts. Basically where needed, students will get adjustments to the workouts. Also Mildred or Shern will always be watching, so you can only get away with so many wrong movements (personal experience!)
3. Welcoming environment
Students in the classes are friendly, just like the instructors. Like they'll make space for you, say hi, cheer you on, etc. When you're new, weak and struggling to keep up in class, let's just say, IT REALLY HELPS.
4. Online booking system
Only because I've tried variants of others and some just give me a headache. WLB's one has a clean interface and I can easily book, add to Google Calendar (one-click!) or cancel straight from email. No need spinning unicorns, just a joy to use.
5. Space
The place is clean, fuss-free and functional, with ample space to move around.
Conclusion:
I've gotten stronger (easily able to carry a struggling growing baby), know how to adjust posture, seen improvement in pain management and have better movement in some inflexible areas. The other half has noted more toned abs, if anyone wants to tone up?
I still go for pilates (once every 2 weeks) and have seen a marked improvement in the ability to handle heavier weights and flexibility. Also, the lessons from WLB do carry over to pilates, e.g., square (not swaying) hips.
As you can tell, many factors (and then some) were considered before signing up. I waited till the end of 3 months before writing this long review, if only to give a fair, complete and hopefully helpful one! :)
Great at what they do: on top of pain relieving, they teach you how to use your body properly and prevent recurring injuries. Therapists are very observant to body movements and provides a very comprehensive diagnosis and hence, effective treatment plans. Effects are long lasting (if you continue to do the exercises taught which are easy to replicate at home or in a regular gym). Best buck paid for physiotherapy.
I first stumbled upon Work Lift Balance through their Instagram account. As a movement professional myself, I immediately liked what I saw: a thoughtful rehab approach with an emphasis on keeping clients MOVING. So when I ran into some chronic movement challenges of my own, I naturally brought them to Shern, the lead physiotherapist at WLB.
From the beginning, Shern listened, thought, and programmed for me with curiosity and confidence. In each session, she explains what she sees in my movement, does enough manual therapy to get me moving better, then works with me through a series of exercises, asking for frequent feedback, and making adjustments until she gets exactly the effect she wants (in other words, let's make Holly's glute medius burrrrrn!). She is clear about the goals of her programming, and I always leave with a targeted and reasonable amount of work to practice between sessions.
As a practitioner, she values alignment, movement, and preparing her athletes for the activities they love. She is absolutely the most creative, curious physiotherapist that I've met in Singapore, and thus, she is my go-to physio referral for the athletes I coach and many of the folks I see in my classes. My athletes benefit tremendously because of her willingness to collaborate with me on their programming.
As an individual, Shern is unpretentious, pragmatic, and honest. These traits, combined with her skills and experience, make her a phenomenal therapist and someone I'm grateful to have on my (and my clients'!) healthcare team.
If you’re an individual like me looking to start exercising in the right way, this is surely the place for you. I’ve been with Work Lift Balance (WLB) for over a year, not only it offers a structured yet personalised approach that's tailored to your exercise needs, most importantly the coaches’ trainings instil the fundamentals of carrying out movements correctly and effectively, and helpful in preventing injuries. Each training session is conducive in the way there is constant feedback between coach and trainee to ensure the movements are done correctly and the coaches are really sharp in monitoring your movement, whether it is in person or virtual session. Coaches here are professional, friendly and you’ll be amazed to learn how young and thoughtful they are. My coach is Mildred, she’s meticulous, stern with a good sense of humour, keeps you going with lots of laughter whilst building up good stamina. Highly recommended as the new/ next workout place, wait no more!
Run by two outstanding professionals, Shern and Mildred are focused on a holistic approach to tackling pain, as opposed to a reductionist approach of ‘fixing where it hurts’. You may be surprised that your nagging knee issue may very well have little to do with your knee itself, but some other part of your body.
My father used to be a competitive boxer and then a hobbyist jogger, and in recent years his knees weakened to a point that 3 different doctors categorically advises him against running. Shern and Mildred’s guidance has helped my dad recover to a point where he has resumed his weekly jogs, and also rebuilt his confidence in his general health.
Deep gratitude and thanks to Mildred, Shern, and team Work Lift Balance.
Having attended many physiotherapies, chiros, and TCMs for my neck and shoulder pain, I would say that I finally discovered the root cause to my pain at WLB. Kirt, my PT, has been very patient in breaking down the concepts of how well interlinked our musculoskeletal system is, as well as providing targeted trainings for my weak muscle groups to help improve posture and movements. Thanks Kirt and the rest of WLB team for finally enabling me to live pain-free! :)
Been training with Coach Kirtan at WLB for about 6 months now. Using their unique STACKED training methodolgy, not only had my sports performance improved, the persistent pain around my knees and shoulders have also eased up. Training at WLB is a really educational expereince as the trainers there are truly interested in your well being and WLB trainers offer more than what regular PTs will give.
I was referred to Shern when I was exercising a lot and getting injured all the time. I went in with a hip, shoulder, and neck injury. Shern's eye is unique and she believes in finding the root cause and teaching you to help yourself.
It's like how the proverb goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." Shern teaches you to move and be mindful and aware of your form; it's injury prevention at its best.
I also attend stacked classes with Mildred, where I relearn all the fundamentals of how to move effectively, how to hinge/rotate/ground, and address my imbalances.
I cannot recommend them enough. Shern and Mildred clearly love what they do and they genuinely care about each and every person who comes through their door. I don't wish for anyone to be injured, but if you are, definitely check them out!
Shern and Mildred are a great team that are passionate about what they do. It is clear that Shern has a solid grasp of functional anatomy and she combines this with her experience to diagnose and treat any issues that you might have in the most practical manner possible, with a smile and cheerful attitude, every time. Highly recommended!
Work Lift Balance came to my rescue when all physiotherapists gave up and wanted to send me to the neurologist. Shern and team helped identify the core issue (posture and form - who would have thought!?) instead of focusing on the symptom i.e. let's fix what caused it. Appreciated the foresight and focus on form which will help in the long term! Big thanks!
11/10 would recommend the team for their attentiveness and eye for detail. Never in my life have I been told how to breathe until I became a regular here.
