Reviews of 188 Cafe
missing herbal taste in the ribs
soup was not very hot even though it came in a claypot
a bit pricy for the quality
Awesome place for lunch, dinner and supper! Used to live around the corner and was my go to whenever undecided.
It’s a casual and simple coffee shop (air conditioned) offering a great variety of Chinese dishes (zhi char), bak kut teh (option of pepper or herbal style) and prawn noodles. Prices are also extremely reasonable!
My personal favorites that has always been a hit consistently when recommended:
- Sambal stingray (best I’ve had in Singapore and beats Newton, Lau Pa Sat or East Coast)
- Szechuan chili fried chicken (spicy but yums)
- Black pepper sliced beef
- Bak kut teh (herbal version)
- Salted egg squid
- Cereal prawns
Never had a bad dish there but if you’d have to skip, the prawn noodles is a waste of stomach space.

Not bad for late night meals.
Had the pork ribs noodles, pork ribs are soft, and the overall flavour is decent.
My favourite place for Chinese food in the whole of Balestier Road (and probably Singapore). The chefs are Malaysian who cook authentic Chinese delights and PRC Chinese who serve Sichuan dishes in the evening. Bak kut teh and prawn noodles are available all day. Nothing fanciful at this casual eatery but the culinary quality and experience are at its pinnacle. This place is way out of league vs many others. Recommended
Got China style, Local style and Malaysian style supper. Haha all are good. Esp like its claypot chicken rice!
A late-night joint that serves pretty good tze char and bak kut teh.
Liked
- Pepper bkt in a claypot. Not mindblowing but pretty good, with top-uppable broth and a generous heaping of tender ribs.
- Fish-fragrant eggplant claypot. Really nice silky eggplant with that signature umami piquancy that goes excellently with rice.
- Fuzhou omelette. Pretty good rendition of the tzechar staple. Light but robust and flavorful.
- Salted veggies. Not much to say except they’re good for what they are.
Slightly expensive food, but of great quality! My husband and I love it because it's open 24*7! We come here regularly and would highly recommend it too.
All the way from Jb to Spore just to try this BKT, definitely one of the best BKT I ever had. Surprisingly, this BKT can beat all BKT in JB.
Herbal soup taste just nice, meat is tender unlike other BKT , had a try on their white pepper one, taste good as well.
Char kueh tiaw got some wokhei. Next time will try more tzichar👍🏻
Amazing Herbal Bakuteh!
Edit: Went back here after 3 years to have the Claypot Herbal Bak Kut Teh, and it is still probably the best in Singapore. Do try out the Black Pepper Crab here as well.
Decent herbal bah kut teh, abit too peppery which overpowered the herbal taste. Would have given 4 stars if it wasn't so pricey, $18.50 for what you see.
Having lunch at this 188 Cafe in a cool raining day. Ordered Herbal Claypot Bak Kut Teh, sesame oil chicken, tou keep and qing long vegetables. Total damage is $36.30.
Everything is nice, just wanted to say the sesame oil chicken doesn't have much meat, not a mouth filings dish.
Great supper spot, their hor fun is good. Penang char kway teow not as good as before.
Herbal bkt and pork rib prawn mee is not too bad
ordered the ordinary prawn mee. For $6 they gave 4 deshelled half prawns (so 2 full prawns) which is okay I guess. Prawns were fresh, broth was average, noodles were average. Overall a little pricey for what you get but not a bad bowl of noodles by any means.
Good food and accommodating crew. They tried hard to communicate with us even though English isn't their first language. Ordered pork ribs, sweet and sour pork/fish and mapo tofu with yang chow rice. My friend said so far it's our first decent meal since the start of our tour.
Definitely a place to go if you want local ambience and authentic SG/MY taste! Consistently good. Their Bak Kut Teh and prawn noodle is actually VERY good!
Slightly pricey menu but in my opinion their Bak kut teh is probably the best tasting one (if you like your soup gao) along the Balestier stretch. They're also happy to oblige when I request for an additional pack of soup during takeaways.
Prawn mee is shiok! The soup is spicy but not overpowering to lose the taste.
Their "zi char" is very authentic too! Also have Bak Ku Teh to choose from.
Best part is they open late so after a good night out surely worthy place for supper.
Highly recommended!
Having Prawn Mee soup in the wee hours in the middle of the night is hard to come by nowadays. Besides that they sell Bak Kut Teh and Zi Char as well, the tea is one of the best in town.
Great hangout for supper, especially craving local food and Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶).
Great service and food quality, value for money.
2pax $21+
Their specialty. Crab beehoon is worth making the trip. If you're not in the mood for zichar, there are other options like prawn mee and bak kut teh and they are pretty decent
Pork bone soup not as pepperish as I liked it. Decent taste but just didn't wow me. It wow my American friend though. This place 333 Balestier was taken by 188 Cafe. I will thought it was 333 Bak Kut Teh store.
The food was so-so, not worth the price imo. Only got three stars because I spent quality time w my family there lol. Customer service terrible, especially when asked to refill the soup. First time there and probably wld be my last
Serves good Zi Char food,
Herbal Bak Kut Teh is my favorite for only $8.50 and given it's open 24 hours I'd say you can't complain much.
Has rare dishes like qing long cai and sour vegetable fish! Opens late, perfect place for supper besides the usual haunts of bak kut teh along balestier
Quite ok, slightly above average. Crab was fresh, but not too meaty. However, can't complain at that price.
Amazing food, good service, value for money... what else can one ask for! Highly recommended!
The food is super good especially the salted fish fried rice and the spicy fish
Prawn noodles quite good and can request for bigger bowl.
Fried rice and noodle dishes are good quality and cheap
Good quality food in a local coffee shop setting
Understaffed but satisfying Sichuan dishes
Herbal Bakuteh is a must try
Variety of food, friendly staff
Bcoz their services r gd
Food
Nice coffee
This curry fish fillet rice is delicious, but the fish fillets in the sore fish fillet rice are a bit pitiful. I wish there were more fish fillets.
There are many hotels and restaurants in the area, but I'm grateful for a restaurant that's open 24 hours a day, and I keep going there.
A store that you can casually go to by yourself late at night.
Good food. Enthusiastic staff. The restaurant has air conditioning. The price of 6 dollars is very reasonable
There was a wide variety and it was delicious ❗
This is the third time👍
The menu is extensive, but I would like a menu with photos.
It's nice, bro
