Reviews of Barrio Spanish Restaurant
Discovered this charming Spanish restaurant recently and had a great experience there. They are the sister restaurant of Kulto at Amoy Street and is a wonderful spot for a nice romantic dinner or cosy gatherings. The food was great, drinks plenty and service 💯!
Recommend their Truffle Mushroom Croquettes, Barrio “Special” Ceviche, Garlic Prawn with Hummus, Huevo Rotos (Broken Eggs), Squid Ink Paelle, Suckling Pig and Churros with Chocolate!
Reserve in advance to ensure you get a seat ✨
Seafood paella was small for 2 pax. Light on palate. The roasted chicken is much better. Charcoal pineapple is an interesting dessert that is worth trying .
The quality was good generally, though a few dishes could be better.
Roasted cauliflower - Good.
Charcoal pineapple - Excellent. Went well with the tapioca, which was like sago.
Squid ink paella - The paella was a little clumpy. The seafood was fine.
Bikini sandwich - Good. Tasted like corned beef.
Pork belly tacos - Fine, except the taco was slightly soggy.
Padron peppers - Good.
Seabass - The meat was a little dry.
Aged beef ribeye - Tender though a little sinewy.
Iberico pork ribs - Good. Tender.
Apple tarte tatin - Good. Thin crust.
Roast chicken - Excellent. Tender and slightly juicy inside.
Churros with chocolate - Fine.
Grilled octopus - Good.
Beef meatballs - Fine.
Grilled prawns - Excellent. Large, sweet, and fresh.
Vegetables fideua - Fine. A little like fried bee hoon though.
Jamon Iberico croquettes - Ok though couldn’t taste much of the ham.
Grilled broccolini and Brussels sprouts - Good, charred flavour.
From an earlier visit:
Generally good but the portions could be better for the price.
36 months dry-aged jamon iberico ($34) - Fine.
Barrio special ceviche (marinated seabass with crispy tortillas) ($22) - Fine.
Seafood paella ($75 for large) - Good flavour.
Grilled broccolini and Brussels sprouts ($18) - Good
Quarter suckling pig ($89) - Good.
Roasted cauliflower ($20) - Good.
Octopus galician style ($34) - Cooked with chorizo flavour and cheese. Fine but the portion could be bigger for the price.
Sangria ($55 for a jug) - Could be stronger.
We started with their well done appetizer - mushroom truffle croquettes, which was very impressed me with the strong aroma truffle taste. For the main course, my friend ordered the garlic prawn and seafood paella. The seafoods are very fresh, the prawn texture is chewy. We finished the meal with the churros, it's very crispy and nice. Highly recommended
Visited during their soft launch so some leeway should be given as they work out their processes. Food unfortunately fell short of their parent establishment Kulto.
First of all, I must give lots of credit to Li Qi. She certainly saved the night (and this review) with her service recovery and taking ownership of the issues. Also the cheese terrine was decent.
Unfortunately, the other items weren't so great. We suspect the kitchen is new and isn't used to the volumes on a packed Friday night. You can clearly tell that in their rush, shortcuts were taken in the seasoning of ingredients and even the mashing of potatoes for the croquettes. The prawns for their paella were probably left out on the counter for too long. It actually started to get mucky. Really not acceptable for a Spanish restaurant.
In summary for the kitchen. The calamari seasoning was slipshod. You have areas that were extra extra salty, the while sauce was way too sour, plus the extra wedge of lime was just overkill. The croquettes lacked seasoning and were dry. The paella was made quickly with too much stock to rice ratio. It was basically gummy and mushy.
Nonetheless, they just opened, so I think (and hope) they'll get better over time! We'll be sure to visit again to re-rate the food after a few months.
Had a nice experience meeting a friend for a casual lunch. We both enjoyed the same dishes (tomatoes and beet salad for starters and seabass and potatoes for main). The salad was fresh, tasty and rather large in size and the fish was super fresh (perhaps a bit oily for the personal taste of my guest) and done very well to my humble opinion. The deserts - which included two churros, chocolate sauce and coffee for additional 5 dollars) was well worth it. I’ll surely be back.
Interesting new Spanish cafe among this great little food village.
Great service.
Great tapas options.
Recommend the Jamon croquettes and the Spanish omelette (tortilla de patatas) and the Brussel spouts from the tapas menu.
Try the Charcoal pineapple from the dessert menu.
Good drink and coffee options to complement the food.
Staff were really conscientious and friendly. Our food came out 1 at a time, so the experience was more intimate than we expected!
Food was really yummy, albeit a bit heavy, not the chef's fault, just our food choices haha. Highly recommend the Apple tarte tatin!
We would have loved to order the paella, but the recommended serving was for 3-4 people. Couples might consider bringing along friends if you want to order the paella.
Overall, lovely experience and food. Thank you for having us!
Great paella and meat. A rare gem at bukit Timah. Will be back for more!
Marvellous food and awesome lady server, LI QI. She’s very nice and only ONE server but many other customers, she’s able to serve so well! Please reward her awesome work:)
Daniel and his staff did a good job.the suckling pig was very nicely done. Crisp skin and very tender and tasty meat.
food was good
but paella could use more ingredients
service could be improved eg. service staff cleared plates while we were still eating our bikini sandwich
Spanish tapas with great service. Restaurant can get really noisy due to low ceilings. Hard to find parking lots.
So delighted with the service of Restaurants Manager, LiQi. Absolutely fantastic and sincere. 5 star service. Prompt and proactive. Food is excellent and atmosphere is brilliant. Will definitely recommend friends to visit this beautiful and well decorated restaurant.
This review comes from my 6yo. He loved it. Staff was very friendly and the food was great.
Excellent food and service with that extra touch made it a great evening. The paella was very good, the tapas - croquettes and prawns were excellent, and the lamb rack was absolutely brilliant! The charred pineapple dessert was remarkable. The timing and sequence of serving the dishes was perfect. Kudos to Kikit (I hope I got his name right) for the attentive and thoughtful service that makes a meal much more enjoyable. The chefs seemed to be enjoying themselves too, and photobombed us very discreetly in a charming way. We will be back very soon!
We celebrated Father's Day at Barrio yesterday and are glad we did. We loved everything we ordered, especially the aromatic, crackly, succulent roast chicken with its large side of salad greens, briny, rich & delicious squid ink paella, roasted cauliflower drenched in tahini and our excellent coffee. The servings were generous and the service - especially by Li Qi - was very attentive and helpful. When we left the restaurant, we were already planning our next meal there.
We have had many dinners there and Liqi never disappoints with her Sterling service. She is an angel with the best and honest recommendations.
First time visit here and we ordered 5 tapas to share for two. Food was great and service was prompt and delightful. Probably the only blip was that we ordered the beef tartare and got the beef steak and we weren’t thinking much about it until we asked for the bill, but we paid for it since we had it.
Might have just been miscommunication when we ordered the food.
Such amazing servers and hospitality staff! Thank you for the recommendations and we’ll definitely be coming back. Ceviche, croquettes, prawn and the Bikinii!
Great service, generous portions. we were pleasantly surprised.
Food is great. Lunch set is value for money.
Happy and glad that Barrio opens in Bukit Timah.
