Reviews of Char
Char is famous for their roasted delights and they were really good!
They've launched some new items such as sichuan spicy chicken (la zi ji) with vanilla ice cream, mala char view, butter egg prawns and more. Must try!! Esp the butter egg prawns!! It's our absolute favorite!
The dessert (peach resin) was delicious too, not too sweet but flavourful enough.
This is a place where there's something for everyone - traditional roasted delights for those who love it and fusion food, interesting twist for those who likes to try new things.
Ordered the XO sambal fried rice, the homemade beancurd with minced meat and the double roast platter. Every dish was super delicious. The char siew was so juicy and tender. The roast pork had crispy skin and wasn't too salty. Would 100% return!
Food was average, would not advise to bring intimate groups here as the noise echos through the space and it gets somewhat noisy.
Surprisingly the char siew was not the highlight of our meal as the name of the restaurant would suggest, be sure to order some the eggplant as well.
The food was really awesome! Especially the Char Siew and Roast Pork! Even though it's slightly on the pricey side, $7.50 per 100g, minimum order of 300g, it is well worth it! The staff were really nice as well, they were willing to wait till my friend arrived 15 minutes before closing and they continued to serve us ice water!
I come here for their char siew, and they certainly didn't disappoint. The meat is soft and succulent, the sauce is simply awesome. Their other dishes are nice too. Will be back again to try more of their other dishes and that char siew!
Place is a bit small though and gets crowded easily. Had to wait a while for a table if come a bit later
The char siew was good but not the roast pork unfortunately. Could have been much less fatty, crispier. Tofu and butter prawns were decent. Used a fave pay discount. Good service. There are two seatings. The later seating is 7.15 to 8.30pm. Roast meats have to be reserved. About $30+ pp.
Awesome char siew! Probably with sauce being coated during the roasting. Thick thick sauce on the surface. Ordered a 3 meat combo. All good. Only place where I eat the whole char siew with fat. Very pricey to me. So will only go once in a Long while bringing people there to try for first time.
Quite a nice place. Maybe parking will be a problem as I don't see any parking space nearby here at Jalan besar main road. The roast pork and char siew may not be as good as the coffeeshop one opposite near foch road, but the beef hor fun is excellent! The salted egg prawn is not bad too. Worth a try though the price is a bit more premium
The double boiled chicken soup is gao (thick) and damn fragrant. Loved it. We tried the double roast. Kinda expensive but both the roast pork and char siew are well made. Roast pork is crispy and can feel the oil drippin. Char siew well roasted with sauce, but portion is too small. Reserve before hand. Chilli is good but not enough meat to go around. And not necessary as the original flavor is good enough
Great food which consistently satisfies your taste buds. Definitely try their classic charsiew, grilled and sauced to perfection!
Great place for an evening with the family, get together with friends or an awesome office meal. Highly recommend their charcoal tofu and their sweet and sour eggplant for healthy fillers between bites of the meats.
I found the roast meats decent but not outstanding. A little bit dry and light on seasonings. Surprisingly, the fried noodles turned out to be the star on that day.
We were looking for some really good char siew and siu yuk though…so we were a little disappointed.
Service was alright but we got there about 25 minutes before they reopened for dinner and as we stood outside looking at the menu, staff inside could see us. It would have been nice if they offered us a seat and maybe even let us buy drinks, because it’s an awkward place to wait, by the roadside, in front of shophouses. They chose to sit inside and ignore us till opening time, which was also disappointing.
I find it an endearing quality when establishments immediately welcome you, even if you’re a bit early.
Nice charsiew and roast pork. White rice is too dry. I went there along on Sunday for dinner. Waitresses are quite friendly. On the menu the least portion I could choose is small which can feed two. This Chinese waitress she clarified with me if I want to go for one pax set which I couldnt choose from the menu. Good experience overall.
love the place and food, i feel just go for the char siew (easy on the sauce!) and soy chicken. tofu is ok and so is salted egg yolk pork. fried rice XO sambal was great.
Becoming our favorite lunch haunt for char siew! Their fried mee sua is also very good! Siew York can be a little inconsistent - good on some days but dry on others.
The roast pork is very lean, skin is hard. Char siew is tender and the sauce is OMG power!
The charcoal Toufu hor jiak
Have to say that this is a very good place for bbq pork; i would give the rate as what we can find good bbq pork in Hongkong. Worth a visit even its far from MRT station. Reservation in advance to avoid queue.
Best char siew in Singapore. This is so good. The fats melt in your mouth. 200g is probably not enough for 2 pax. The soy chicken was great too. Sambal kang kong had a good balance in taste. Pls order with white rice!
The place sells the best char siu and siu yuk in Singapore! Have been there a few times and this will always be my to go place for roasted pork!!
Updated 23 June: Char has contacted me with regards to the quality of the set. Service recovery was swift and generous.
It is good that a restaurant takes feedback seriously and not try to make excuses.
This one of disappointment will not stop me from ordering from them again. Their char siu is still to die for!
Ordered the Father’s Day set. So not worth the $$. For about $50 a head, could have gotten much better quality stuff elsewhere.
Only their signature char siu was of standard. Everything else was no better or worse than coffee shop tze char.
But the worst was the desset which was supposed to be honey dew sago. Not a single sago seed or shred of honeydew. Had to throw the whole thing away ☹️
Awesome char siew. Melt in your mouth meat with sufficiently charred edges. There's nothing more you can ask for.
Other dishes were not bad but nothing out of the world like the char siew. Smashed cucumber needs a new recipe though... It's just plain spicy and not vinegary enough. And the black fungus are all chopped up which totally destroyed the texture of it. I even had a very hard time trying to pick each piece up...
Had the roast pork and char Siew combo, jasmine duck and xo fried rice. The xo fried rice is the best among the three, however it could be better if it's less oily. The char siew and roast pork tasted good on the first bite but eventually got sick of it. The roast duck is amazingly good, much better than the char siew and roast pork. All in all, a good place for gathering. However, price is on the high side
A decent place for roast meat only if you want to have craft beers or wine along with it. The roast duck is passable but doesn't retain any crispness on the skin. The char siew is fatty and soft but a little too soft for my liking. Sio Bah was crispy but ordinary. All in all nothing to write home about but there was nothing particularly wrong. Not great value though.
Small little place with very limited seats. It just seems to be always full. The food is generally good but there are some on the menu that is absolutely delicious! The roasted pork is really, really good! The char siew is good but I think Canton Paradise has better char siew. The white pepper pork and chicken thigh stew are must tried. The mince pork with salted fish is also really tender and juicy. Go visit this place!
yum yum char siew! sio bak used to be better. several other dishes were quite delish as well. wash it all down with some craft beeeeer! 😋🍺🍺
Excellent char Siew. We only had that with rice. 700g and 3 full belly after. This is good.
Ordered a Char Siew & Roast Pork 双拼, 200g each (standard).
Char Siew was nicely charred and glazed on the outside but a bit dry on the inside.
Roast Pork skin was thin and crispy but tasted bland and lacked "oomph".
Noodle portion is reasonable and moist enough that it doesn't stick together.
Not your traditional Chinese roast meats, but if you would like to try a modern take on Char Siew & Roast Pork, this place is worth a visit.
Their Charsiew and Dry beef hor Fan are the "must order". I happened to dine 3 days before duan wu jie and they only left with nonya zhang so I bought 1 home. To my pleasant surprise, it's very very good!!!! I regretted not buying more!!!! Food and service was great! You have to try yourself!
Pretty good food and service! If you’re a fan of sweet and fatty char siew, this place is definitely for you!! This place is not too crowded during dinner time, which makes for a fine place to have a nice meal and good conversations. Prices are on the higher side (I.e. typical Chinese restaurant prices). This place may be a little out of the way so do plan your journey there in advance!
For the table: Char siew and roasted pork, deep fried egg plant, vegetables and soup (not pictured).
Char, as dictated by its name, serves crazily charred charsiew which melts in the mouth. Probably arteries choking but at least you’ll die happy 💯
Closest parking via street parking or car park along Beaty road. Sauces they use I find different and unique blend. Worth a try for family and larger groups.
Overall foods are ok, will recommend the tofu and char siew. Small restaurant hence please make reservation.
The Char Siew and Roast Pork combo is most delicious. Not too fatty, very tasty. We had the set meal for six. Portion is generous. Service was attentive. We like to selection of modern Chinese art series in the restaurant. The place was packed. Best to make reservation before visit. Selection of craft beer is limited.
i came here after hearing all the fantastic reviews and photos of the honey Char siew and roast pork. i must say it was a little underwhelming. the roast pork was slightly on the dry side and the crispy skin, wasn't as crackling as i expected and the charsiew was soaked in such thick sauce that was too sweet.
the saving grace actually came from the Cold chicken (Kou Shui Ji) which was a splendid translation of the dish. the chicken pieces were fragrant and soaked full of flavor. Loved it!
No wonder Char is on Michelin Guide Point of View 2 years consecutively. I love their 'melt-in-your-mouth' bbq pork the most
The roast pork belly and char siew is amazing! Reasonably priced and attentive service
Tasty “charred” char siew if u like the caramelised type. I prefer the HK style though as it’s less sweet.
Char Siew and Roast Pork top rate! Restaurant price but good quality. Big serving too.
Parking may be a challenge to find. Char siew was good but that's about it. Pricing on the high side.
A little pricey and food was alright. Definitely better than most roast meat we've tried but at tuts price point, there are better options nearby, in my honest opinion. But the service and atmosphere here is great so it's kind of a trade off. No harm giving this place a try.
Not a diet place, but absolutely satisfied my char siew craving - perfect amount of fat and meat. Fried rice with belacan was also delicious
Undisputedly the best char siew place in Singapore, you gotta try it to experience the wonderful dishes in this establishment
Best char siew I've ever eaten. A bit pricey though.
thanksgiving for miss wuyu.find such restaurant.good taste.best for fried pork and fired rice.
delicious char siew, friendly staff, attentive and prompt service
enjoyed the fried rice which was seasoned nicely ( not overly salty )with lots of wok hey. roast pork had a lovely crackle and the huge slab of braised pork ( which we took home coz we couldnt finish it 😆) was good for several meals..really yummy. dou miao was green and crunchy..brothers loved it. and i could go on.. A really satisfying experience. will eat there again one day.
Delicious char Siew and roast pork. Other dishes are also tasty.
Fried rice was good. Roast meat taste and texture not really on par with fook kin which is comparatively cheaper. Double boil soup doesn't have a gao feeling to it and only one piece of tough chicken meat and vege can be found in the soup. Overall not impressive or decent for the price you pay.
Had a dinner there with my family. We ordered their Famous char siew 300g, crispy pork 300g and 1/4 duck. Along with 2 bowls of wanton noodles and 2 bowls of rice to share.
In my opinion, the duck meat was quite dry and tough but the skin is crispy at least.
Char siew and crispy pork are delicious. might be a tad too overly fat for the health conscious people.
Ohh we love the wanton noodles!
Ambiance is comfortable enough. :)
Char Siew was incredible. Nothing else like it compares.
The char siew served is the sweet sticky type with more fat in it, whereas the roast pork is pretty good with cripsy skin layer. Other dishes were OK but nothing to shout about. Table top was abit sticky, not sure it's just the wooden lacquer or some other residue.
Nice environment, food portion was reasonable for the price. Nice char siew and roast pork.
Good food - char siew was great (nicely charred, sweet and tender with lots of flavors), roast pork was good (crispy and tasty), three treasures vegetables (spinach with salted egg and century egg) was so so. The soups were classic and good. Service was excellent and ambience not too bad but all in all overpriced for what you get. Just have char siew rice and a drink for value for money.
The treasure pot delivered was warm and in good presentation.
Food portion is good for 6 pax and was delicious.
Did some enquiry on fb messenger and respond was fast too.
Will recommend to my friends and family.
Char redefines excellent char siew and roasted pork (siew yoke). Char's version of char siew here is soft, a good percentage of rendered fat vs meat, sauce that isn't overly sweet, can almost taste the char, and melts in my mouth. Wonderful. The roasted pork has melt-in-your-mouth texture too, with the right amount of rendered fat, and a surprisingly very crispy crackling. Excellent! We had the cold chicken and 3 Treasures - spinach with egg and century egg. 3 Treasures is good but cannot beat Putien's.
One of the best char siew places in Singapore.
After hearing recommendations of the place from friends, radio-Class 95 (Lunch tips from Yasmin), we pop over one sat for lunch to try it out. The place is what is raved about, a nice place with nice food at a reasonable price. The service was also warm which made the meal so much more enjoyable! Disclaimer - we went for lunch at abt 1pm on a sat afternoon and there was not much of a crowd there.
The signature char siew is to crave for!! although at $6 per 100g (at time of post) it might sound a bit expensive, the price tag will melt away once you pop it into your mouth as the meat is wonderfully cooked till tender and you taste the sweetness in the sauce and the smokiness of the cooking process.
Another dish to go for would be the Salted Egg Pork, although it might sound like another iteration of the overused salted egg sauce, the combination of chomping down onto salted crispy fried prok it a great idea and i think most other zi char place will copy this idea soon.
Besides the pork dishes, the double boiled chicken soup and 3 treasures spinach are also highly recommended! you can taste the depth of flavour of the base of the 2 light dishes, the stock used must have been carefully prepared.
A dish which we did not really enjoy that day was the Cold Chicken appetizer, perhaps i was expecting a Si Chuan spicy cold chicken type of dish, however it turned out more vinegar-ish than spicy, nonetheless it might be more suited for those vinegar lovers =)
Overall we would highly recommend the place for all and if you can afford the time, pls do make reservations for dinner and the premium slow cook char siew, if their signature char siew are already so good, i have high expectations for their premium char siew!!
OK I have extremely high standards. And I only tried their charsiew at lunchtime so no premium version.
Meat was too dry. Sauce coating was OK but not tasty enough and not charred crusty crunchy. Was disappointed. Old Airport road was better IMHO.
Wow the char siu was sucha beautiful experience. Really has a nice char, but also crispy, and the sauce is not too sweet. Good 3 treasures and other accompanying dishes as well. Simple decor and pleasant service. Glad we found this place, will come back.
Come get your char siu fix before they shutter.
Great spot!! Special Char Siew & Roast Crispy Pork Belly are MUST HAVES!!! ( Btw... 100gr - $6, min order 300gr).
Relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere with really cool pictures on the walls!!
A must for all pork lovers! Conveniently located in Jalan Basar, Char serves gorgeous, GORGEOUS Charsiew that melts in your mouth.
Other dishes to consider: Charcoal Beancurd, Soon Hock Fish (fresh everyday) and crispy Roast Pork.
Reservations for dinner is a must!
Great char siew - best I have had in a long time. The homemade charcoal tofu is also an interesting dish. Highly recommended in general.
Charsiew is amazing. I always request for lesser fat as I dont particularly enjoy the fatty part of the meat.
Parking is abundant in the area but its along the road side.
Fantastic char siew (sweet roast pork) where the fat melts in your mouth. Can’t get enough of it each time I visit. They have interesting beer selection too
One of my favorite places in Singapore. Great good and service. Char siew and crispy pork are absolutely delicious. 25$ pp without wine por beer.
Everyone talks about the charsiew - and it is delicious - but the quality of the other dishes that we tried was also high. Will definitely be back.
The food is great. Not too oily or salty but yet full of flavour. Service is friendly and relatively prompt.
The roasted pork super crispy and good. You dont try you will regret...
BBQ charsiew belly was delicious. Even the little kids loved it.
A hidden find with quirky takes on local dishes!
This Cantonese-style restaurant has won two Michelin stars. The barbecued pork is the restaurant's signature. The texture of the barbecued pork is like Friday's ribs, which is not dry and has a very special taste. The roast pork is salty and just right. The crispy roast duck skin is crispy and the meat is not dry. It is a highly recommended restaurant. The only thing is that the price is a little expensive.
Invited by my daughter's boyfriend, I went to dine there and ordered a few dishes. The pictures show that I love the fried fragrant ruts the most. It's not greasy and paired with chili sauce. It's a Malay scenery. The shrimp sauce doesn't overpower the taste. It's good. The three-layered meat is crispy. The meat is tender and delicious, worth trying. The interior is elegant and the lighting is soft. I like the paintings on the wall. You can discover it yourself!
This restaurant is famous for its delicious char siu. There are quite a few types, so you can enjoy your lunch at your leisure. It's a great restaurant whether you go alone or in a group.
Definitely delicious local food. Another good point is that they have a good selection of craft beers.
