Reviews of Hillman Restaurant
The paper wrapped chicken is still excellent. Juicy succulent piece well marinated in ginger and huateow jiu.
Prices have gone up substantially but that is to be expected
The soup was mediocre though
Signature paper chicken is must try. Other dishes are very tasty too. Spring roll was average level, no meat inside??
There are a lot of Japanese diners.
My God man. This is THE BEST 纸包鸡 in the entire universe!! The Hotpot Noodles and Hotpot beef are seriously good too.
The desserts on the other hand can be skipped. Below average and very expensive for the tiny serving.
Really good traditional Cantonese cuisine at this restaurant with a deep history of culinary excellence. Had the beef brisket stew pot, paper wrapped chicken and 2 vege dishes and they were all delicious.
Enjoyed every dishes.. Yum!!
Pleasant service crew 👍
Nearest MRT station is Farrer Park
Food taste good but not out of the world. It's a four-star rating restaurant at best. Claypot pork liver was really fragrant and chewy. Pork rib is tender and nice. Paper chicken doesn't live up to the hype though its delicious. Hong Kong mee is really good and nicely done.
It's an old traditional restaurant with a long history. It serves Cantonese cuisine. It's well know for it's paper wrapped chicken. We tried the sharkfin omelette that serve with lettuce. Something different.we had fried rice and noodles. Nothing spectacular. Overall, am not really impressed with the food. It's good but nothing special to me. Just very ordinary everyday dishes.
Have not been to this restaurant for about 20 years. Came here after watching The Lost Ojisan's video which recommended one of my favorite dishes, Chee Pow Kai. The CPK was well marinated and juicy however I would prefer if it was sweet also.
The salted fish fried rice had good wok hei and I loved the sweet black sauce of the prawns, if only the prawns had more crunch. Some reviewers here recommended the pig's liver but I found it not as good as some places. Skip the desserts. Service was good and do make reservations on weekends.
This is a very old family owned business. I've been to Hillman so many times and yet the chefs are always consistent with their cooking. A few of my favorites and must eat whenever I visit. The Claypot pork liver is cooked to perfection each time. Best with white rice as the sauce is delicious! If you visit the one at kitchener road, I'll suggest paring at city square mall and walk over. The one at pasir panjang has an open carpark nearby.
No parking infront of shop. It’s along a main road. They do have valet service for dine in customers. I think it’s not daily so better call to check.
Nice old style Cantonese Resturant. Granny boss was nice and friendly.
Ordered their signature paper wrapped chicken. Meat was very tender and juicy, well marinated. The paper somehow kept the flavours locked inside the meat. Can taste Chinese wine and ginger. Overall very good. This is a must order if you come here.
The sambal Kang kong was nicely cooked. Can taste the “ wok hei”. They must have used very strong fire to stir fry this vege.
The egg noodle( noodle below the egg ), taste abit like wanton mee. Actually I have never eaten this dish before.
Overall I find the all the food very good, but abit on the salty side.( might be just my preference )
Paper wrap chicken - love the tenderness and gingery taste
Claypot Pork Liver - must try. I am usually not a fan of the liver because of the powdery and rough texture of it. This is done slightly under and perfect. The claypot keeps it warm and sanitise.
Popular for its "paper chicken". Everything definitely tastes good, but bit pricey for the quality.
Nice. Do book table and advance order their duck or chicken.
Must eat the paper chicken and Claypot liver and treasure pot.
I like the pork ribs, steamed white chicken Cantonese style and the noddles served in clay pot. However for 2nd floor diners, an elevator should be installed instead of present 2 flights of steps
Good to make reservation as tables are limited. Mostly diners were either tourists or on business trip. It was popular with Japanese especially. Perhaps, the cooking style were near to the taste of Japanese food. Paper wrapped chicken was well marinated with Chinese wine with ginger flavoured. The happy tofu was recommended mostly by reviewers but for me, I think just average. Steamed fish meat was hard to my liking, fried broccoli was slightly salty too. The best to me was the fried Eefu noodle and egg with sharkfin wrapped with cabbages. Overall, if you have Japanese Guests, it is a good place to bring them here.
Had the paper chicken! Good food. Has a good reputation among locals and tourists alike! Queue tends to get pretty Long so do book in advance.
Great food especially the bean curd. Not sure why most patrons are Japanese.
Paper wrap chicken is good. The rest is pretty ordinary. Black pepper prawns tasted mushy and overcooked... likely not properly defrosted before they were cooked. The pork used in the Sweet sour pork dish lacks sufficient amount of pork fat and tasted dry, nothing close to the good old traditional taste. Overall the price is reasonable for a restaurant with a nice atmosphere and ok food. Great place for a get together.
You know when you stumble into a food experience you weren’t expecting? That was our experience at Hillman Reataurant. From the first bite to the last the flavors were so delicious, subtle and complex. The atmosphere is unpretentious. It’s no surprise the owner won a gold medal from a Michelin star chef. If you are reading this in search of where to eat, you can stop looking and just go to Hillman.
Yang chaw fried rice is pretty delicious
Their paper chicken has been famous among Japanese , this they're always a lot of Japanese tourists.
Came during lunch hour and food was served really quickly as well
Hidden gem. Old school flavours.
I really like the pak kuat wong.
Good service. Advice to make reservations.
Its an experience of great cooking by
An award winning chef. Very busy restaurant that looks small outside but
Pretty big. Sambal kang kongs fried to its spicy good. Pot livers in sapo goodness. But the highlights is the chi poa kai wraps. Not sweet but just that
Perfectly good. Sedaplicious good.
A must patronized Restaurant.
10/8/23 edit: food is amazing
Disappointing lunch 😐 Would have given 2 stars if not for the good service provided and nostalgic vibe. Food is not cheap and even though alot of their dishes have wok hey, might get hypertension from having their dishes (too too salty!) Would only recommend the tofu with minced meat (very soft and silky) and paper wrapped chicken but nonetheless still very salty. The eefu noodles, which we ordered medium, portion was so small only meant for one...which is lucky for us because it is so salty. Apart from that, parking nearby the restaurant would be difficult and probably should park at city square mall and walk over. Will not return...

Been hearing good reviews so wanted to come and try. But I really think it's a little overrated. Portion is way too small for its price. The paper chicken was ok, not my kinda thing but my friends liked it. I prefer the claypot pork which was recommended on food king good, only complain about the pork is the meat is too lean Haha. If they sell fatty pork I might return to try ;)
No complaint from you hand over your car to the valet parking service till end of dinner. I would consider this restaurant a strong contender for authentic SG local food.
Excellent food and service
I ordered a couple of dishes for takeaway viz Pot Beef, pot noodles, paper wrapped chicken, happy tofu and sambal Kang kong. We were wowed by the ‘wok hey’ of the dishes. It was excellent, old world cooking and addictively good. I will make this restaurant my family kitchen!
Great food, wonderful service, nice atmosphere and delicious paper chicken.
If you’re ever this side of town, I highly recommend this place.
It has a long history that is visible inside the restaurant.
Seating spaces are limited and so if you can, try to book in advance.
What a find! Nothing at all fancy to look at but the food is delicious! Kway Teow, steamed prawns with garlic, kang kong, braised tofu but most exceptionally the paper chicken. The latter was not at all oily but succulent pieces of tasty chicken!
Excellent claypot noodles, beef & pork liver and paper chicken!! The dishes brought back fond memories when i used to eat there when i was a kid in Cantonment. Yum, yum ... 👍🥇
old skool vibes. food great. typical zi char style. had 纸包鸡, claypot beef, sambal kangkong, happy tofu - pretty much everyone's standard order. meats were tender and juicy. shout out to the prawn omelette. [-1 star for selling sharks fin] pls stop supporting the evil sharks fin trade.
Old school cooking. This third generation eatery is reminscient of eateries from the 60s. Recommend the dry beef hor fun. Best to make a reservation especially for weekends. Here's an interesting bit of trivia. Hillman cars was a favourite of the founder. So he named the restaurant after the brand :-).
The restaurant was crowded on a Friday night. The paper wrapped chicken was so delicious! The table beside us ordered the paper wrapped chicken 2X!
Must come to try this!
Sunday, 02/01/2022: an oldie but goodie - good ol’fashioned Cantonese food - very tasty, reminiscent of the old times. Only wish is they use less MSG - makes you very very tasty!
This restaurant serves great food especially their paper wrapped chicken and pork ribs. It brings you back to a bygone era. We visited when it wasn't too crowded.
Nice food with decent pricing. Service was also good. Some of the good dishes includes, pork liver claypot, paper wrapped chicken and fried pork rib.
When there with a bunch of friends for a gathering. The food is really great and price is really worthy but just to note on the service of the staffs, in particular the chinese male service staff at level 2. Was utterly disappointed when the air-conditioning was dripping water and informed the male service staff, he ignored and walked away after listening to my request to change table. Same thing happened when I requested for a baby chair and he simply chuck one blocking the way and asked me to arrange the seats myself. At one point he even almost took away my personal iPad on the table claiming that he had mistaken that as the ordering pad used in the restaurant. Countless times when me and my friends need to call upon for service he ignored us even when we pressed the bell and he's the only service staff available. Minus this dissatisfaction on this particular Chinese male service staff, I really enjoyed the food and would want to try and come back again in the near future.
Went there with my boss for lunch.. Forgot to take pictures tho! Paper chicken was really nice.. I enjoy the Claypot Fish. Service was excellent!
Nice Cantonese style food. Love the Paper wrapped Chicken.
A Cantonese restaurant which is famous for paper wrap chicken (09.09.2023)
This is an Chinese restaurant located in little India. We get all types of Asian foods. Also they serve liquor. Though I’m an vegetarian I have not tried this food
only paper chicken is the main attraction. other food just so-so. service is quite good.
U always love some of the dishes in this restaurant. The food still tastes delicious n price reasonable
Pretty good paper chicken. Other dishes were just ok but portions are really really small
I used to come here a lot when I worked in the area, and there's a reason for it! Every time I go it's always very good. Recommended!
The second level is too noisy as there are many tables of diners and the kitchen area is near the dining tables
Paper chicken. I was recommended by one of my Japanese friend and to my surprise this place is filled with 90% Japanese customers.
Good food but quite pricey. NETS not accepted here.
Food was good. The ambience was almost non existent. Service staff was friendly.
Best Paper chicken place in Singapore.
The traditional taste is Back again. 90 years.
Great food at reasonable price.
Serving best paper wrap chicken in the world
Really enjoyed it.
Excellent food, great for groups.
Good paper chiken and claypot dishes.
Ate yearly for the past 10 year.
The best restaurant!
This restaurant is famous among local Japanese expatriates.
I recommend the paper chicken (steamed chicken in a bag). The flavor is a little strong. Seasoned with ginger and soy sauce. It's simple.
It's okay to eat. The seasoning was a bit light and I was satisfied with the taste of the paper chicken, but the chili pork tasted better. It smells less, the seasoned yakisoba is strong but delicious, and the shrimp and egg fried rice is delicious.
Hillman is a paper chicken after all! It is no exaggeration to say that there is no point in coming to this restaurant unless you try this dish. The chicken is probably wrapped in a special skin that soaks up the sauce well, and when you break the skin, the sauce overflows into the rice, making the rice with the sauce super delicious! Of course, the chicken soaked in the sauce is soft and satisfying. This is a store I want to visit again and again. There is one store in Namba in Japan.
A Chinese restaurant in India Town that Japanese people like. Juicy paper chicken wrapped in paper and baked is very popular among Japanese people. The spring rolls were also crispy and delicious.
Please see this article for details.
For those who have been there in the past, it seems strangely formal and sad lol
But the taste is perfect👌
In addition to the paper chicken, the pot stew noodles are also delicious.
I didn't know how to eat paper chicken, so I ended up eating the whole paper.
It was delicious.
The famous paper chicken is so juicy and delicious!
The other dishes are not so good. .
Next time, I'm thinking of trying the paper chicken, rice, and soup (^^)
This is a paper chicken shop that is always listed in guidebooks. They also have a branch in Osaka, so you can eat here in Japan, but there are always lines of Japanese customers. You can almost only hear Japanese inside the store.
Teppanyaki paper chicken, lettuce-wrapped shark's fin, and water spinach with sambal chili sauce are easy to match with Japanese people, so I think it would be easy to introduce them to people on a business trip from Japan or with friends. Even if you live here, you might want to eat it once in a while. Reservations are required!
Visit in May 2024
Closing time was 22:00 and last order was 21:45.
It was the last minute for the last order, so they were already preparing to close, and there were a few people who looked like part-time clerks relaxing at the seats, which was a little surprising since it was overseas.
However, even though the store clerk was on a tight schedule, she served customers with a smile even though she could only speak a limited amount of English.
For food, I ordered fried rice and paper chicken.
This is surprisingly delicious!
Paper chicken can be ordered from a minimum of 5 pieces, and the taste is extremely juicy teriyaki.
I'm sure the price is $7.5? It's reasonably voluminous and reasonably priced.
It tasted like Japanese people.
Also, the fried rice is so delicious that I think it's the most delicious I've ever eaten in my life.
Be sure to try it when you visit
It tastes exactly like the fried rice I had at a super high-end Chinese restaurant in Nagasaki Chinatown.
About $18? It was a little pricey, but even the M size is about the same size as Hidakaya's large serving, so you can enjoy it at a reasonable price for overseas.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was like a local Chinese restaurant and not very fancy, but the quality of the food was top-notch and lived up to its reputation.
This restaurant is one of the best I had during my stay in Singapore, so I highly recommend it.
My workmate who lives in Johor told me that it was very delicious!
I was told this and stopped by on my trip.
I followed the restaurant's recommendation and ordered paper chicken and stewed noodles.
All of them were very delicious and healed the fatigue of the trip!
I want to stop by again when I go to Singapore!
Paper chicken has taste on the outside
The taste is bland inside.
I ordered stir-fried lettuce with oyster sauce and stir-fried broccoli with garlic.
It tasted similar.
It's not bad.
I tried paper chicken, which is popular among Japanese people. The taste was similar to ginger-grilled chicken, and it was very easy to eat.
The much-talked-about paper chicken tasted like soy sauce flavored with ginger, and I really liked it because it felt like I was eating fried chicken. Each piece of chicken is bigger than I expected, so if you're serving two people, you might want to order 5 pieces and order extra if you need more.
The beer comes out quickly and is cold. There are only Japanese people there, and the staff are used to it.
Apparently they don't eat the paper from paper chicken.
