Reviews of Ichi Umai
I ordered the Tempura Moriawase ($10.90) and added on a rice and miso soup set ($3.90).
Service was relatively quick, expected considering no one else in the restaurant when I was there - a 2pm on a weekday afternoon.
I enjoyed the rice and miso soup. However, while I also did enjoy the Tempura and also appreciated the portion; I couldn't help but find the dipping sauce strangely familiar. It was after a few dips that I realised that it tasted like a ginger chicken essence - found in Chinese cooking.
Perhaps my greatest gripe, just as how Junction 9 is to like Junction 8; so is Ichi Umai to "Authentic" Japanese cuisine. This was solely based on what I ate, and I think I have to be more reasonable to their other offerings, in which I am excited to try.
At the price point the tempura moriawase was decent. This was a place I found nice but not utterly enjoyable. The dim setting was perhaps adding to a more sombre setting, where I was dining with 2 houseflies occasionally checking in on my meal experience.
Good, not great is how I will describe Ichi Umai.
This is a typical small Japanese eatery. The food is good and offers quiet a sizable menu. Since we are new to this eatery, we were trying out but we will be back for more. Typical price you would pay for reasonable Japanese food. The bonus is this place is so new, you don’t have to pay service tax.
Came here for dinner on a Thursday evening. We ordered several dishes, namely the Buta Kakuni Don (Braised Pork Rice Bowl), Una Tamago Don (Unagi Eel Rice Bowl), Unagi Don, Ebi Furai Kare (Fried Ebi Curry Rice), Buta Kakuni Ramen (Braised Pork Ramen), as well as 2 side dishes - California Maki and Ika Teriyaki (Grilled Squid).
The California Maki was great - the crab meat and fish roe were fresh. The Ika Teriyaki was also good. The texture of the squid was perfect - chewy but not too rubbery.
All of the main dishes we ordered were pretty good. There were some negatives for some of the dishes, but overall they were good. For example, I didn't really like the taste of the curry on the curry rice and the ramen broth was a bit too salty for my liking.
In total, 4 of us spent around $90 on 5 mains and 2 side dishes. For the quality and portion, I'd say the price is pretty reasonable.
Overall a nice cozy place for some Japanese food and worth paying a visit.

Aburi mentai salmon don ($14.50). Really good quality for the price and salmon pieces were really fresh. Came here close to 6pm on a public holiday and there was almost a line forming outside. Service was pretty quick, within 10 mins. A small and cosy space. Will definitely be back! A hidden gem in the north.
Ordinary local foodstall serving up Japanese dishes. Gyozas were super tough and doesn't really go well vinegar that comes with it. Other than that, the other dishes seem pretty ordinary but I can see why it's family-friendly at the price point with options that cater to young children. Most of the taste come from heavily-sauced up dishes so beware.
Beautifully decorated Japanese stall in junction 9. Food quality is super good here. We especially liked the squid and garlic fried rice (loved the wok hei and occasionally bites of soft scallop). The chicken katsu was pretty delicious as well.
Price here is more expensive than places in yishun, but comparable to restaurants in orchard. No gst and service charge as well! Hopefully this is one of the places in junction 9 that will last :P
Had dinner at Ichi Umai earlier on around 7pm.
Was thankful there was still seats as place is small.
Ambience and food is overall good and price is acceptable :)
Will visit again to try other dishes.
Tried a variety of stuff from this small restaurant. The service is fast and the food varied and each dish has it's own unique taste. The servers were attentive.
We had the following:
1. Yuki Buta Don (Cheese) 5 stars.
2. Salmon Ebi Roll (5 stars)
3. Yaki Udon (4 stars - it has a slightly stronger sour taste than what I would like).
4. Buta Kakuni Ramen (very strong and intense soup. The buta was very tender and infused with flavour). (5 stars)
5. Katsu Don (Tori). (5 stars)
Food was affordable, cosy kind of food and vibe. Bucket of 5 beer at 29.90! No gst and svc charge for now. Most of the food we ordered were pretty good. The misses were the lala miso soup and nacho cheese sushi. Felt that the nacho cheese covered the taste of the sushi. Would visit again
First time trying. No GST and service charge. Partner had the bara chirashi don while I had the buta kakuni don. Fish is fresh, but maybe the amount of fish needs to be increased? Similarly, the buta kakuni had only 6 pieces of pork. Would have expected more.
Been coming here almost weekly as the food quality is really awesome. Pricing is pretty decent as well. Place is a bit small so can be packed on meal times.
The food was delicious and affordable. Highly recommend the Aburi salmon bowl. Would definitely recommend if you are around the area.
Ordered a few items but the dish that gave an everlasting craving was the garlic fried rice. The garlic balanced so well with the eggs and the eggs are in reasonable pisces and not small tiny bits where u cant even taste theres eggs in it. They added big pieces of crunchy fried garlic which gave a bit of crunch to the dish and much loved extra garlic taste. You will be amazed that this dish is not oily at all, unlike other fried rice thats leaves an oily plate. If you're a garlic or fried rice fan. Do gave this dish a try. Almost forgot the pork tonkatsu was amazing too tender and juicy not dry. Good balance of lean meat and fat on the cut.
Food was amazing and affordable at the same time! Customer service was also very good and the staff was friendly. Was very welcoming even though we came close to the closing time and they also did not rush us to eat at all. Ambience in the restaurant was nice too. Really enjoyed the experience.
Like the food so much, especially the squid and lobster salad the taste so nice and the price is worth it, High recommend.
I ordered the Chicken Katsudon. Pretty good. Crispy and tastes nice.
Excellent Japanese food in Junction Nine. Price quite reasonable.
Pricing seemed cheaper than most eateries for Japanese food. Portions were accordingly smaller.
Amaebi in the bara chirashi don was tasteless - easily the worst I'd ever eaten and a disappointment as the first dish. Fried breading on the soft shell crab tempura was way too hard. One cooked donburi was left ignored on the counter for a long time, and had gone cold when they finally served it.
Overall quality of the food was average, while the service was a bit crude. Given the price, don't expect too much despite all the good reviews.
Not bad the taste, I like to softshell crab . Yummy
Authentic Japanese food at affordable prices and without gst/service charges🤩🤩🤩
Good food with nice ambience. No service charge and GST
Having lived in Japan for several years for work and tasting lots of delicacies there, the sashimi don in this shop is really good, and even better when you compare its price to typical Japanese restaurants in Singapore serving the same things.
Good dining experience☺️
Boss is very nice☺️
Food supper nice, especially the SAKE HOTATE YUZU the sauce very nice and price are very cheap too, no GST and service charge.
Service staff also very friendly.
