Reviews of Janggut Laksa @Queensway Shopping Centre
Ordered the curry chicken with bread. Curry was ok, more of the thick & milky type but a little lack of spice & too salty. Portion was too small, given 3 slices of bread but gravy enough for 2, you will need to pay additional $1 for extra gravy.
I love the chicken cutlets curry rice here so much. The curry sauce is rich and flavorful, and having it with the sambal chili paste makes it taste even better.
If you come here during peak hours, you might need to queue for a table for about 10-20 minutes, but it's definitely worth the wait.
The soup is slightly creamy, sweet but with a spicy kick. Generous with the toppings, prawns are fresh too. Staff are friendly and quick to assist. I personally enjoyed their laksa more than the other brand.
Mere steps away from the main entrance. People sit around tables waiting to served Singapore's iconic Laksa. It was creamy, savoury and very fragrant from the blend of spice paste cooked with coconut cream. The lady proprietor was friendly and accommodating. One of the best laksa I ever had in Singapore!
Ate for many years. My favourite laksa in SG. Taste consistent through the years.
Prices have increased over the years but still supporting them.
Lovely delicious laksa.
Not to be mixed up with 328 Katong laksa.
Update:
Latest visit, had both laksa and curry chicken. Super fragrant and delicious as usual.
Janggut Laksa! Super creamy and satisfying. I wished they cut up the noodles more but other than that everything was tasty :-) I would buy the small when I’m not too hungry and the large when i am. The otah was normal though, I wouldn’t buy again.
Bought takeaway small curry chicken with rice. For $6.50, u will get 2 small wings n 1 small drum and a piece of potato which I find it more to the expensive side. Taste wise is not bad.
To start off, a little confused about where to stand or sit. However, aunties were alert and got me a seat almost immediately! Ordering system was very smooth, the aunties were quick and also helped to collect payment.
The best is no doubt the food here. Unfortunately was too full to try the Laksa, but the Chicken Cutlet with Curry was nice and tender. Curry was absolutely delicious. Didn’t expect this gem in the middle of the mall but I loved it. Coffee was well made too, just thick enough and sweet!
No frills at this laksa/chicken cutlet rice place. Honestly you can't go wrong with this, the food comes fast, is hot and honestly pretty tasty.
It gives you a taste of home and childhood for me. Would recommend you getting a bowl of laksa, plate of chicken rice and share it with a friend
Came for quick dinner with colleague. The laksa is great. Otah is spicy. Curry is ok. Wish the bread is the traditional version though.
Be prepare to wait for the good food, 2
Aunties will ask you to stand near the tv for the queue and wait, turnover is fast and the food is worth the wait!!
Laksa must add more chilli to smoke up the alittle watery soup, otak must eat, best is the curry which is so thick and creamy, chicken was not soft, luckily i more of a curry person so not so bad! The chicken cutlet rice quite disappointing to me. Verdict is die die must eat the laksa and curry with bread.
One more impressive thing is when they take order, no need to write down, really power!!
Quite a long queue there on a weekday lunchtime. But the taste is better than the one in Katong now. $6 for a small serving and $8 for a big serving.
They call themselves The original Katong laksa, and it’s ironic that they’re placed right next to 328 Katong Laksa.
Ok. I’ve tried the one at Upper Paya Lebar, and I’ll honestly say they make Good Laksa. Their chicken chop curry rice is great, with their chop crispy on the outside, without being overly fried, and tender and juicy inside.
Their curry gravy, like their laksa gravy is lemak, and very tasty too!
The only issue I have with this place is its price. It’s pricey and for their servings, it’s pretty small. If they were more generous with their servings, I’d give them a full 5 stars:)
There’s a charm to how chaotic and orderly this place is. Food is really good. I usually get the laksa but ordered the curry chicken cutlet rice. Chicken is nice and tender and when mixed with the curry, makes the whole setup all the more appetising. Wouldn’t leave the place without an otah as well.
Disappointing bowl of laksa. Tasted very salty today, coupled with chaotic queue system. Will not return.
Queensway Shopping Centre is a nostalgic mall to most of us growing up in the 80s. It was THE place for cheap sports shoes and leather boots. As a teenager we always gather our school mates and we can easily spend a whole afternoon roaming those sports stores and sneakers. And of course in between score a bowl of the piping hot, delicious Laksa. Fast forward to today, this mall is now The upmarket place for Sports and everything about Tennis and Badminton. Probably that's why now there are two Laksa stalls instead of the original one. Prices are also trending on the high side for a small bowl of Laksa, starting from $5.50, Otah $1.40. Once the bowl arrives, you can already smell the fragrant fresh lemak or coconut milk. But apparently the sauce is fairly watery. Taste wise, I wouldn't call it bland but it is definitely mild. There's a light umami and mildly savoury. And only a hint of lemongrass and ginger heat, almost non existent. There's no taupok, three tiny cockles, two prawn halves and a bit of sliced fish cake strips. Fairly under-dressed for a $5.50 Laksa in my book. So one star for the lemak fragrance, one for the sambal, the saving grace or I honestly wouldn't finish the watered down bowl of noodles. Last star for tasting the childhood memories at this location.
This little eatery is the heart and soul of the iconic Queensway Shopping Centre. For many years, it has retained its unique classical taste and old-school vibe. Prices have risen with inflation but food has always been worth the buck. It's a Michelin-worthy establishment in my opinion.
Came to try the original laksa, was not disappointed. Great laksa and a unique vibe. We were basically sitting in the open space of this old mall. It was packed but the queue moved quite quickly for us, 2 pax.
Not all seats given are comfortable so don't expect to sit and dine properly like in a restaurant.
Food came quick and staff were friendly and efficient.
You can pay with paynow or cash. Very affordable, big laksa is SGD 7.
Located in Queensway shopping centre. This is adjacent to Katong laksa.
Seating capacity is maybe around 30 including the longer tables at the centre of the mall. Tables are cleared by the stall themselves and seating for more people is allocated when there is less people. When the crowd starts increasing, you will need to queue to order at the stall yourself.
If it isn’t crowded, a nice auntie will help to order and bring the food to you.
We ordered the laksa, 2 small ($5.50) and 1 big ($7.50). 3 otah ($1.40 each) and the curry chicken with bread ($5.50).
Laksa is good. Smooth and easy to eat. It wasn’t spicy and the coconut taste is not overpowering. Ingredients are more on the larger portion and has cockles, fish cake and prawn. It was fragrant but the taste does not stay too long in the mouth.
The otah is normal in my opinion. Sweet and decent sized.
The curry chicken was the star to me. Just the right thickness, a little spicy and came with half a potato, around 5 pieces of chicken and 3 pieces of gardenia-like bread. So it tastes like home to me.
Pretty good and filling albeit a little pricier then expected.
Yes, their name says laksa, and it's good... but the curry chicken is the absolute star of the show. If you like your curry coconuty and creamy, this is the place to enjoy it. The place may not be as glamorous, you may be seated too close to each other, but it's charming in its own way because of how chaotic it can be to just get a seat. Will be back for sure.
Have been here for more than 35 years and still like that it has retained it's charm and most of the taste that I have always remember it to be. Love the curry and the laksa which is good old comfort food. Curry is of the right spiciness and is thick, with only drumlets and mid wings used. Chicken are tender and easily falls off the skin. Of course prices have went up since I first came here. You don't find malls like this anymore in Singapore. Hope it can be around for another 50 years
Nestled discreetly in a Singaporean mall, this laksa stall is a haven for food enthusiasts seeking an authentic and heartwarming experience. Beyond the unassuming façade lies a culinary treasure trove where the aromatic symphony of spices sets the stage for an unforgettable meal. The gracious lady owner, a beacon of warmth, not only orchestrates an efficient and seamless food service but also shares the stories behind each ingredient, adding a layer of personal connection to the dining experience. The bustling atmosphere is harmoniously balanced by the efficiency of the staff, ensuring that every bowl of laksa served is a masterpiece of flavor and speed. In the heart of this unassuming mall, this laksa stall isn't just a place to eat; it's a culinary sanctuary where passion, efficiency, and genuine hospitality converge to create an unforgettable laksa experience!
Don't forget to order their chicken wings curry too, and A LOT of rice.
Very good laksa, not too spicy and flavour is great, no wonder this place is so popular. But disappointed with the chicken curry cutlet rice which is very ordinary and lack curry sauce and large size costs $7.50! And you will want more curry because they don’t give you enough but they will charge extra 50c for few tablespoons of curry!! Shocking. Corn cup is also very ordinary but will satisfy your kids.
Friendly staff helped us with the seating arrangement. The food was served hot, but the cutlet rice was a bit hard. The laksa is nice, and the broth is good to go along with the rice.
Ordered large laksa for $7.50. Mackerel otah cost $1.40. Small laksa cost just $5.50.
Spoon eat laksa! This changes the way you think of eating noodle. Thick beehoon was cut to length where u just need the soup to eat. So you will unintentionally end up consuming more of the broth which is a good thing.
Broth was damn flavorful. If you think it is too diluted or no kick, just add more chili. I think I didn't add enough. But regardless without chili it is very mild and on the sweet side due to the sweetness of the prawn. The branch in orchard (closed down) didn't filter the scrap but this filters so the broth doesn't have things which you don't want. Cockles was fresh prawn was there there, fish cake does its job.
Otah is a good side, be it alone or added in. Has a small kick to it and u get occasionally chunk of fish.
Delicious janggut ( nonya) laksa on level 1 starting at $5.50 small bowl.
It’s gravy is slurping delicious without being overly lemak( coconuty), well balanced flavors, fresh cockles, crunchy bean sprouts.
An empty bowl for evidence ;)
They also sells very good curry chicken, otak otak. Too full to have muah chee, will try next time.
Only island style long counter seats available, a place to just eat and go.
Great food in a casual environment in the middle of the mall. The Laksa comes in small, medium, or large size but I'd personally just get the large. They have been around for awhile and still seem to retain that quality food flavor. I tried the Laksa, otah, lime juice, and teh ice. The ingredients in the Laksa tastes fresh including the cockles. Have yet to try curry chicken and chicken cutlet rice but hoping to be back soon to try it. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is served hot in about a minute after ordering despite having a full house.
10/10 for this creamy, rich and aromatic curry!
PS. The rice is a little too dry and hard - slightly undercooked.
Also, honey and lime juice is so good, Love it!
Their chicken curry is pretty good quality and their dishes are served fast. Good affordable meal if you’re not feeling laksa. Grungy and simple dining location.
Came back for the Laksa and I really enjoyed it - definitely worth it.
Tried the laska and curry chicken.
Lasksa flavour was a little mild and found to be lacking in fragrance.
Curry chicken was flavourful, the curry flavour complimented the chicken. However, the bread given was disappointing. As it was just the normal sliced bread that can be bought from the supermarket.
Overall, the servings for both were small and not enough for a meal.
The best laksa i’ve had in singapore! Would definitely come back.
<Laksa review>
This is a really popular laksa stemming from the og Katong laksa. I personally acknowledge that laksa prepared in this style simply isn’t for everyone. It is robust, rich and creamy. Each scoop is a great combination of the ingredients that make up this great dish.
Service here can be really chop chop. Don’t fret if you’re here for the first time, you will be guided by the “instructions” given by the ladies here.
Food is served very promptly and hot. It’s advisable to try the laksa before adding the sambal as the flavour combination isn’t always for everyone.
Overall, I’m satisfied but definitely not blown away. As much as I enjoyed it, it’s a little costly due to the relatively small portion size. However, the strong flavours can be surfeiting. Personally, I do enjoy laksas with a soupier broth that I can consume separately as well. Definitely worth a try though!
Very good laksa and curry chicken! Creamy and not too spicy
Never tried Singapore laksa before. But when I tried this Janggut Laksa, I get hooked with it. The taste is good and the prawn is fresh and good. Also the normal laksa curry usually feel thick, but Janggut Laksa feel more of a soup and taste light, so easy to drink and feel nice taste. The price is S$5 for regular one.
Legendary Laksa has been around for ages. Overall it’s ok, nothing fancy to shout out about. Next time would love to try their curry chicken! Seems like the review for curry chicken is better than the signature laksa. By the way, the otah is pretty average, order only if only you are craving for it!
Cash only very good laksa.
Janggut laksa best lar, must try 👍
And the otah as well 😋 yummy
Friendly staffs 👏
Famous for laksa, ordered a bowl: its has authentic tatse, less milky, less gelat and still retain the fragrance of lakasa. The fishcake are sliced into small pieces, its well cooked taste soft and smooth. Noodles are cut so it could fit into the spoon and makes it easy to eat with spoon.
Ordered the otah ,its soft and tasty, and not spicy👍
Ordered lime juice too
Craving for second bowl now😂
great food. best original katong laksa. just a lil bit chaotic if it's crowded.
Best Laksa in Singapore. The curry chicken is also super good, my wife loves it.
Laksa was quite nice but the service and friendliness of the staff are what I enjoyed even better than the food. Difficult to find good service at no frills establishments. However, these ladies were very nice. The Laksa is definitely better than the clay pot at the Alexandra hawker center. My favorite Laksa place is still at the Botanic Garden.
Good coconut milk laksa traditionally eaten with spoon bcos of the short strand of noodles.small bowl cost $5. Looks white but tasty.
Have been eating here since year 2010.. one of the authentic curry chicken and laksa you can taste in Singapore. The taste never change. Taste and big portion. Must try
Love the laksa here and curry chicken. Only thing is price is abit steep as compared to standard stall. Usually I eat a small bowl then head to IKEA for wings! Best combi
their curry rice and chicken cutlets are the best! curry tasted like home cooked😭 so yummy and is always crowded!
The laksa here is very fragrant and addictive, and wasn't very spicy. The consistency is on the watery side, which I didn't mind. I'd recommend getting the large bowl as the small bowl ($5.50) wasn't very filling.
Service is fast. Food is exceptional. Seating is cramped.
Great bowl to have when the weather is rainy. Added extra cockles! The sour plum juice is a great complement!
The laksa is filled with fragrance of the coconut and shrimp. Noodles is cut to a length that is just nice for a spoon to scoop. No chopsticks is required for this dish. The price is on the slightly high side. There is a store nearby of you are interested to try a slight different flavors. There is also drinks available if you are of low spice tolerance.
Excellent with Friendly staff's. Been ate this stall when I was in my SCDF NSF. Curry chicken and Laksa will always never disappointing me. Food's teste are still the same as last time and so yummy. Added otak and it make more perfect. Highly recommended 👌 👍 👏
Accidentally found this hidden spot , passed by and attack by the laksa smell. Boyfriend said that chicken chop very tender and not so dry , yuuummm
Still one of the most satisfying laksa. I also like how you can get a table and your food very quickly all the time.
Laksa is excellent, better (much) than the other stall in Queensway Shopping Centre! Curry chicken is one of the best in Singapore, go with rice or bread. The chicken cutlet is just as good. Can go with rice and curry gravy. The otah is shiok, when go with laksa or rice. The service is really good, very courteous, find and arrange seats, and food are serve almost instantly 😀
I love this place. The laksa & chicken curry gravy are delicious! The prawns are small, chicken a bit tough... But I feel it is decent given the price. It is a very casual eatery, eat & go. Aunties there are always very friendly and nice. I have been dining there in the last 20 years, every time I happen to go to Queensway.
Best Laksa and curry chicken chop in the area
Finally can place a comparison between the two. They are both good but I think 328 is a tad thicker (aka more lemak) vs janggut.
I was there on a Sunday and the place was really crowded. The workers there are fast and efficient in allocating the seats to their customers and I got a seat really quickly! The laksa gravy was eggy and tasty! The shrimpy flavour from the soup is really strong. Noodles were cut into bite-size bits so that customers can eat easily. Even though the place is really small and I have to squeeze with people, I would definitely come back again for seconds!
Nice laksa. Their broth is lighter in color compared to most places however it was still very fragrant n rich in flavours. Seems healthier as their broth is less oily. They provide drinks too as well as other dishes like curry dishes which i have yet to try. Sadly they no longer serve almond susu which they did the last i came many years ago. Service was good and prompt. Tho place was alittle too cramped for my liking as everyone seats beside each other.
Laksa is good. Curry chicken is nice but chicken is quite tough and the rice is too hard
Not super recommended but it’s okay to try the standard laksa
I’ve been eating their laksa since I was in secondary school more than a decade ago and it’s still so good! Now I finally tried the chicken curry for the first time and I might like it even more than the laksa. So yummy.
+ Best laksa in SG in my opinion
+ Fresh ingredients (eg. shrimp)
+ Friendly staff
+ Cozy seating with aircon
+ Short waiting time due to great crowd management + efficient food preparation
This is decent place with some good local laksa. Though the auntie can be very rude I Guess comes from being popular, Guess manners in the industry don’t matter these days. Than again, the service industry in singapore across is fair to say in dire trouble. Lucky they don’t rely on tips for a living.
Best tip I would give is maybe some manners .would go again.
Delicious food for a low price. Very friendly.
Very out of the way if you on the other side of town, but worth the fun, and entertainment, the staff...well, lets say they not service friendly. So all the stars go to the Food. Was well worth it, but would not go again, recommended to go. Though service in general in SG is below poor, i guess with no locals working in the industry, this government have to do better.
Boy it was soooo good. The curry is creamy and chicken us tender. Bread is soft too. Laksa was superb!!
Had the laksa and it was alright. Didn't quite hit the spot. I guess I had higher expectations cos I remembered it to be much more lemak when I had it quite some time ago. Pricey for what you get.
This place serves one of the best laksa and curry chicken in the queenstown neighbourhood. Highly recommended if you're looking for good and cheap eats!
Fulfilling! For first timer, try both the laksa and the cutlet curry rice. Order both small.
Ever popular laksa if you are far away from East Coast Road. Good laksa.
I rate this the number one laksa I've had in my life and next life.
Delicious laksa, different from the ones in Indonesia, you must try it if you come to this place. Recommended yeah.
Definitely have it with crumbs!
Pretty tasty laksa! And it's cheap!
Ota looked like a fish sausage and was weird.
Laksa has a strong coconut flavor and is moderately spicy.
It may be greasy, but I ate it well.
$7 for a medium size and a drink.
It's okay
I stopped by on my way home from IKEA.
The rich seafood soup tastes addictive.
I had laksa and it was cheap and delicious.
I really like the chicken curry and laksa here.
