Reviews of Kaunta Singapore
Value for money Kaisen Don, order the hana (medium) which is just nice for dinner. The aged hamachi is super soft and the sesame sauce pairs rly well. Don itself is very hearty, while not groundbreaking in flavor, it’s definitely enjoyable. The soup is umami-rich, light, and refreshing.
Service is warm and welcoming, do note that dining limit is 45 mins. Best to come at around 6-630pm to avoid queueing.
My wife and I have been coming to this place quite frequently and we would definitely recommend visiting for the kaisen don. The great part about the kaisen don would be the fact that you can enjoy 2 versions of the fishes served as after having it raw, soup would then be added into the don giving it a whole different flavour. In addition, Chef Boo Kae Lun who served us was knowledgeable in the ingredients used and would explain finer details regarding the fishes used while serving our meal.
Not sure what the hype was about. Food is ok only. Sashimi appetiser came with sesame sauce which was overpowering obviously. Sushi also wasn’t the freshest but for the price (I went for the premium bowl) was ok. Broth was more Singaporean than Japanese. Strong flavours instead of delicate. Overall, it’s a Singaporean Japanese restaurant if you know what I mean
amazing aged fish omakase. was my first time trying aged sushi, and oh wow the flavor is super deep and textures are a completely new experience that I’ve never had in sushi before. personal favorite was the white grouper. chef boo was super attentive and took the time to explain each of the different techniques used, from charring the fish with Japanese charcoal to the amount of time each fish served takes to age. really amazing to see a local chef with so much fire and passion for japanese omakase!! would recommend everyone to try at least once in their life :)
Hands down the best-aged fish I've had. It is my 5th time dining at Kaunta and the aged fish flavour never disappoints. I'd prefer sashimi over cooked food in Omakase style hence Kaunta would be my first choice when it comes to Omakase dining.
Although the restaurant is a small cosy setting I enjoyed dining here as the Chef is friendly and knowledgeable and with over 2 decades of experience in this field, I know that I'm in for a treat! Each time I'm here there's always something new as they would bring in different types of fish according to seasons.
Please keep up the good work! Looking forward to coming back again. :)
Either a 3 or 4 star depending on your expectations. Having been here twice, the food is consistently a step up from mid-tier chains like Tomi Sushi. So if you’re looking for a relatively affordable omakase and want to explore sushi that’s better than the chains, go for it.
But the atmosphere never really worked for me. The chefs were always talking loudly to each other, and on my second visit, was repeatedly flicking water onto the floor (?). Dirty dishes also started piling up in front of us (behind the counter) as the meal went on. So if you’re looking for a romantic date spot, I’ll pass.
My first ever omakase. Chef was very knowledgeable. He introduced his fish and could share the taste and the expectations for each dish. It was a joy to eat there and definitely a wonderful experience. After eating sushi here, it will never be the same again.
Loved the food and service here. Chef was really friendly. Nice dining ambiance. Convenient location too. Some of the fish for the sushi was aged which added a different taste profile.
Haven’t tried the authentic tsujihan in Japan before but personally I thought everything tasted great! Special mention for the broth — the seafood taste was rly robust and well-rounded without being overwhelming, one of the best seafood soups I’ve had ☺️ come early though I came right on the dot at 11.30 and there was already a queue but we were all seated once they opened so there was essentially no wait 😊 really satisfied would def return!
Given a birthday treat here and the experience was very much enjoyable! My virgin oyster experience comes from here too! Fish is fresh and the umami flavor from the soy, vinegar and ingredients they use is simply amazing!
Decidedly average for what is supposed to be a premium sushi Omakase from the people behind The Sushi Bar. Some pieces were good and would not be out of place at a high end sushi restaurant, but unfortunately the execution of some of the more premium pieces was off. (E.G. the normally crowd favourite chutoro was tasted mushy and the uni was just not very high quality)
Absolutely enjoyed our first omakase here! We had the lunch menu and as people that usually the aged fish here were really palatable! Did the $35 top up for the Maze Chirashi and no regrets really! Everything was fresh and top-notch. Thank you Chef Peter for making our experience fantastic - will definitely be back to try the dinner menu
Love the aged sashimi with sesame sauce & keisendon! The other highlight of the meal is the yuzu fish bone soup which tasted so good!
Had the kaisen don, food was good and reasonably priced imo. Enjoyed the ambience as the space was small and cosy which allowed for a nice private conversation. Will be back.
The food is decent and the price point is good for the omakase set lunches.
My rating is based on the wagyu don, did a special order to omit the uni and ikura. The presentation is good but the meal takes way too long to be served. Whilst it's A5 wagyu, the meat lacks flavor and is overwhelmed by the sauce. The egg is a nice addition to the dish.
The best part of the meal for me is the umeshu jelly which came with the ice cream.
As it’s our first time here, the staff recommended we tried the Omakase Kiri (I think that the name) which was the middle range - appetiser, 7 type of sushi, hot dish, soup and dessert, total of 19 different bits of food. Good thing we made reservations as it is a really small place. Can’t imagine when the previous SMM was in place how they managed to do business. Also we got the table (I think it’s the only table seating!!). But if you like to see how the chef prepares the food then counter should be it. Honestly reading the mixed reviews for this place gave us some jitters. But our experience turned out well as you can see from the lovely pix. The staff were attentive and knew the dishes and ingredients well. I like that they have pictures of the fishes and names as each dish was presented to us. One suggestion would be to laminate those cards as they tend to get dirty and don’t look too presentable. A shame when it’s a really good idea cos other Omakase place would just rattle off what you are eating and you won’t remember after. Another minus is the place is small and if you get a rowdy party of 5 the noise builds up. And you feel like you are in a izakaya and not an upmarket place. But do try out this place if you are looking for a mid range Omakase with a range of season items.
Haf omakase there. The place specializes in aged fish and this really brings out the profile of each of the fish served. So so good and really something very different from the usual omakass. Chefs and staffs are all very friendly. We had a fantastic time there.
Had a wonderful dinner for 2 pax at Kaunta. Chose the $250 per pax omakase dinner. No disappointment at all. Ingredients used were fresh & tasty. We enjoyed every bit of it.😊
The kind of restaurant you hope Michelin inspectors will never visit and you can have it all by yourself.
The complexity of flavour blend with chef’s recommended sake.
Enjoy while you can before the waiting list gets longer .
Booked out for dinner price is around 150-300 for dinner but it was really worth it. All the staff & chef are friendly and it was amazing experience for me. Highly recommended!
A lovely experience with the omakase here. The sushi is aged for a varying number of days that tames the fishiness and brings out the more subtle flavours - an interesting experience. Service is pleasant enough.
It was a great omakase place for an extremely affordable price, with tender and flavourful aged fish. The chef was nice and friendly, and service was flawless as well.
Not too bad, but the uni doesn’t taste as fresh as I wanted it to be (could be off season). Only improvement point
Aged sushi at its best. Been to others, either price too high or face too black. Chef Peter always chats and I like it. More reviews at ig rawwfoodies
went there on a weekday while they had 20% off their lunch bowl. it was an enjoyable experience overall, and reasonably priced.
the space has about 12-14 seats. if you arrive before opening hours but missed the first seating, be prepared to wait at least another 40 mins, longer if more are there for omakase.
It’s just sooooo good! U have to try it to understand. Chef Boo Kae Lun has mastered Japanese cuisine. I had the Omakase n it was mind blowing!!! 🤯
Came here when the restaurant started their lunch kaisendon bowls. Food was great but service could be improved. I think the restaurant is not used to handling long queues. I came on my own but they let a group of 3 that came after me in first, making me wait until the current round of 20 pax was done. No explanation given as well
First time having an omekase. So far I love.the experience. We got the $128 The salad is savoury and the added squid bits added sucha delicious crunch. I could eat it all day. The next 3 dishes were appetisers. 2 were good. There was one that contained some basil oil. It was ordinary. Then come the highlight of the meal. The sushi. Each pieces is so memorable that I will certainly return. My top fav is the baby salmon and the muscle fin of this particular fish. It was buttery and melts in the mouth. Pardon the amaturish description, each dish had such a long and description and I was too busy reveling in how yummy the sushi is. The meh dishes were the miso soup. It was just an ordinary egg drop miso soup. I was expecting something similar to the type i taste in the tsukiji market because its a 128 dollar omakase. But it was normal. For the desserts, the Gelatos were ok. The black sesame is slightly better than the pistachios because it tastes more milky than full of pistachios. But it's normal gelatos. The accompanying tofu cheesecake is yummy. To sum up, I do love this place and I will certainly return to try the dinner omakase.
The food quality and taste are superb!!!
I can’t take photo of the food when it’s served.
Dessert nice too!
Worth the price
The lunch Omakase was great in terms of quality and quantity with the price. Cosy environment and staff are pretty friendly. The chef shows passion at their work and concentrate on their preparations. I would love to try out their dinner Omakase.
Looks like a new set up place at Kee Seng Road - a cul de sac hidden at the corner of Tanjong Pagar Complex. We tried the 7 piece sushi set which started with salad, chawanmushi (with a piece of unagi), sushi, clam soup and then roast rice flavoured ice cream. Service staff was friendly and responsive. Overall the meal was ok. The place is comfortable but was slightly noisy.
Good service, a bit noisy but lunch omakase is worth for what you pay!
super good meal & we really enjoyed the food!!
Amazing omakase. One of the best in SG and the price is very reasonable. Considering the quality of the food, and friendliness of the staff, totally worth it.
Always so amazing food
We had different sushi with different aged fish, satisfying put taste palate
Love the fresh premium fish and seafood served here. Nice interior and price is reasonable! Will be back.
Cant go wrong with kaunta
A cozy environment with excellent food and service. The freshness and presentation of the food was really good.
Not too bad for the price, simple and straightforward dining experience. Staffs were also really friendly.
