Reviews of Lau Lim Mee Pok Kway Teow Mee - The Art of Mee Pok
Tasty noodles but these are my observations. $6 for a small bowl, $7 for a medium bowl. The only difference is there are prawns for the medium bowl. Also, for whatever reason, there are quite a lot of flies despite it being an air-conditioned environment.
Got the fishball soup noodles, fried carrot cake and kaya toast set. Fishball soup noodles was good! Fried carrot cake and kaya toast were average. There was a good stream of customers on Friday morning.
Mee Pok at the front, Kopi and Kaya Toast in the back. I will share some of my favourite hacks and tips in this review.
Expect long waiting times for the Mee pok - Today I waited about 40mins but you can wait anywhere between 15-60 mins.
Hack #1: Chope one of the seats at the side aisle, in the middle nearer to the back when you reach. It’s much cooler in the shade and make sure you get a table that’s on flat ground. Also beware of sneaky birds that like to come and steal food.
Hack #2: Order a $5 kaya toast set and drink from the back stall while you wait for your noodles. The kaya toast is pretty ok, not bad but not fantastic either. 1 set for 2-3 pax sharing is perfect to satisfy you while you wait but not enough to fill you up.
Hack #3: Hot lemon tea (off menu) is better than the lousy kopi. Order a hot Teh O with a slice of lemon in the morning. Very sweet and refreshing taste, guaranteed to wake you up with a smile. Cup size is small though.
Hack #4: Noodles come in S/M/L sizes, just order the small mee pok with chilli. If you need more food order a bowl of fishball soup / carrot cake. Dumplings are so-so. The noodle portion is small but sufficient for a normal meal. Of course, feel free to upsize if you’re a big eater.
Hack #5: Now comes my favourite hack. Remember the soft boiled eggs from the kaya toast set? Add them to the noodles and mix well. The egg yolk makes the mee pok so damn creamy and delicious. Really goes super well with the chilli, noodles and the fishballs. Remember you have to buy them separately at the front and back stalls, but it’s SO WORTH IT.
Overall, yes the food is on the pricier side. It’s been gentrified over the years and and probably tastes different from the OG Ah Lim Mee Pok. But can’t deny that the food is damn good. Worth it!
Decent bowl of noodles. The soup is flavourful with some minced meat inside.. however, the wait is 45 mins on a Sunday afternoon, so we decided to get their breakfast set while waiting for their noodles.
Seems like they are moving and also opening a new branch soon! Added some photos for info!
Foods and drinks are good. Fast and hot. 猪油渣 Pork lard very fresh and 香。
Self service. Self return tray, self clean table as no one clean table.
Clean and Bright environment. Many wall fans around.
Had lunch and the waiting time was about 30 minutes for the noodles. Order the noodles from the noodles counter. If you want coffee, you have to queue for it at the drinks stall. You are given a buzzer to notify you when the noodles are ready for collection.
The coffee was good. Our dry noodles were nice - the sauce was spicy enough and went well with the noodles, fishball was soft and chewy, soup was good but the texture of the noodles was average. Overall, food was nice but not worth the 30 minutes wait time.
I passed by and saw the appealing advertisment of their dumplings. My intuition didn't fool me. The dumplings & broth were delicious.
They had a little bit of bit and full and meaty taste. The broth was rich in taste and fragrant.
I would definitely come back just for this dish.
Service was pretty basic, but could be that they are not used to foreign guests much.
I got what is asked for a reasonable price and that's good enough.
Good Mee Poh, their fried carrot cake also nice. Always long queue be prepared to wait especially weekends. They also have desserts but will be sold out if late.
Base sauce is good. Full of UMAMI. Hand made fish and meat balls that were bouncy. What's not to like when they offer you pork lard on the side. They also do beverage, so you can order your hot coffee to go along with your noodles. Ordered the $5 portion which was slightly smaller serving, so I suggest for the $6 bowl if you want something more filling
- Cash only
- outdoor seating available
- smoking area available
- order at counter
- self service buzzer system
Food is good, toppings are tasty, fishball and meatball are handmade and has a great texture. Chilli is spicy but not that flavoursome.
Biggest complaint is the tiny portion sizes. Ordered 1 small and 1 medium and only difference was the addition of 2 small frozen prawns. To elaborate on just how small it was, I finished my noodles in about 3 mouthfuls.
It was a humid evening. The air cond units were working but seems they were blowing hot air. The kway teow noodle soup was excellent. The bak chor mee was done right too! Noodle and ingredients were proportional. Food was served relatively fast, despite a steady evening crowd.
Ordered the dried mee and fried carrot cake. The mee taste springy and the carrot cake has a crispy texture. The wait for the food was so long i decided to order the kaya butter toast. To my shock, the toast finished but my mee yet to arrive. The long wait
diminishes the anticipation for the good food and the environment is very warm.
So, eat only if you have tons of time to burn. Order the kaya butter toast while waiting for your mee as advised by one of the reviews. lol
There are three Mee Pok shops at the same location, but this Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim situated at the corner underneath a large tree is probably the most authentic one. Both Mee Pok and soup come with extremely rich taste. Nice sheltered seating area at the side and in front, very popular among the locals. Kopi from the stall behind is not bad too.
A good bowl of BCM. Its filled with ingredients and sauce just right, mee pok was well cooked. Fish ball is abit too salty, the rest is okay.
Dumpling soup was tasty, filling was good.
We reached abt 2pm and wait for noodles was around 15 mins.
Same flavor and taste as their original store from way back at Jln Tua Kong or the current OG at Sempang Bedok. More organized operations though. From queuing to ordering to getting your orders.
Only negative I’d say would be the bad internet or telco connections the deeper you go into the shop. Well….. might be a good thing cuz you are dining to connect with family / friends 😅
Updated 1.3.2020: Visited here 2 more times. It is so good. Brought my family here too n they said it is good. Only my mom said she tried better. The best one are at jurong..
But to me this is good enough already... Haha...
P.s. coffee n wu xiang not too shabby too..
A bit expensive through. I ordered largest bowl this few times and still felt the portion is like a regular bowl outside. Only with 3 more prawn. Large bowl $7 compared to outside $3.50.
Older post: One of the best bcm mee I have eaten. Love the base sauce n the noodle texture n all thr ingredients esp thr big n plump beans sprouts with those extra crunch.
Only thing is the portion is too small. After having the great bowl I m still hungry... felt like ordering another bowl because it is that good but later decided not to... next time I would order a bigger bowl
Great coffee, carrot cake and peanut butter toast.
The noodles take a while, if you have the patience, go ahead.
This apparently is a new branch of the popular mee pok from Jalan Tua Kong and then Bedok. Taste-wise, it didn’t disappoint. I don’t typically like bak cho mee but this one is special. Service was somewhat slow though.
The noodles are tasty, the fishballs are springy, and the minced pork is well-marinated, but the sauce is too salty for me to appreciate the true mee pok bowl. Even if I have to put the soup in the noodle, the saltiness remains. Maybe the next time, I’ll ask for less sauce.
The fishball noodles over here has the right flavour but slightly oily cos the fried pork fats is one of the main ingredients in the noodles. Although there are not much customers and there at least 6-8 staff working, waiting time is at least 30 minutes which does not makes sense. Simply not worth the queue.
Price aside, food is actually quite good.
However, I think that this place is hard to survive. Service is slow with tidak apa attitude from the crew. Taking their own sweet time even though customers are queueing up to place orders.
Customers will eventually walk off or never to visit again.
Fantastic bowl of noodle. Portion is not too bad. One of the best mee pok place in Singapore.
Heard this mee pok is popular, but it’s just okay, normal lo.
Simple, honest food.
They just moved over to Tanjong Katong, taking over the space of now-defunct Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee.
I went here with my sister because of Strictly Dumpling’s video on YouTube. To be honest, I didn’t find the mee pork particularly tasty. Everything tasted average, at best. Portion is quite small considering I ordered a big bowl.
I have been searching for it since it closed at the coffee shop behind Bugis +
Medium size at $6, it's quite spicy and I loved it :) reached at 8.30am and waited for 30mins. Expect long queue on weekend.
Really delicious mee pok! The small portion was enough for me but they have medium and large to choose from if you're really hungry. The noodles were springy and Q, I also liked the ingredients, they were really well prepared and fresh! The fishballs were bouncy and tasty. Fried pork scratchings are self service. Order your drinks behind and you're good to go! My only qualm was that the noodles were a tad oily, but that made the meal all the more indulgent and a treat!
My favorite Mee pick but prices getting ridiculous.
Coffee's also good. I buy by the kilos to bring overseas.
Update 29 Sep
First time I came after they moved. Cost a dollar more now. Noodles are dryer and sweeter, not as good as before and smaller portion.
Slightly pricey for Mee Pok, great texture of noodles and fishball is firm and boucy. Come here all the time, never had any issues! Oh be careful of some of the birds around the tables.
Delicious mee pok! The noodles had a good texture (not too soggy) and the sauce base and soup were flavourful and satisfying.
Very delicious mie pok ever in Singapore I ever try.. Next will bring my friends to here also lehhh
Nice!!! Lovely meepok and the new stuff is just great!!!! Carrier cake is also very good
The soup is very good and tasty, the wait is usually 30-45min after order and depends on crowd. The price is a bit high but quite worthy.
Yummy. Delicious. This is a $7.50 version. If not for the price, I rate it 5stars. Will return to eat again.
OMG! it's too salty with the dried noodles. Even the soup is salty. Was here 2 months ago, today the sodium level is off the charts! Eat at your own peril.
Took away food from here on a sat afternoon and we really enjoyed what we had. I ordered the dry kway teow and it was really well seasoned - the chili was pretty spicy even after I asked for less so take note of that if your spice tolerance isn’t so good. They also gave a portion of soup which was flavourful without being too salty. We also tried the carrot cake which was pretty good too. I’d definitely be happy to take away from here again although I’d call in advance because the wait was around half an hour and they said that for takeaway orders, you can call and then just swing by to collect
Been a while since I ate here. Happened to pass by at 6am and ordered their first bowl. Taste is still great, but prices have gone up a it, just like everywhere else. Perfect harmony of savory, tartness and spiciness!
To be honest, I'm not a fan of Mee pok noodles, but when I tasted it and finish e whole bowl of Mee pok; I must say u must try it!
Meatball is different and nice. Fishball nice. Fishcake above average. Pork slices tender, well marinated and not overly fat and gelat. Chilli lacks fragrance, just chilli pedi spice which overwhelms the flavour. Soup average. Noodles slightly on the tougher side. For its relatively expensive price, expected more overall.
It used to be my favourite Mee pok but the past few times i came here it has become almost unbearably salty. Noodles seem to have changed also and doesn't have that unique mouth feel for me anymore. Hope the mgmt can take in the feedback bc i see it repeated many times here. Fishballs still taste great!
One of the best bah chor or minced meat noodles in Singapore. The fishballs had the hint of fried dace or salted fish which elevated the flavour . The texture was springy and loose with a nice bite. Noodles were well cooked , just a tad on the soft side but not soggy
The soup was tasty but clear and clean tasting. Not too crowded on a weekday and sitting in the open air was casual but comfortable. It was nice to be able to add on nasi lemak and otak2. Coffee and tea was the usual standard but not bad. Parking was free and available at 9+ am on a weekday
Good food, fairly inexpensive and a nice place, quiet enough to have a conversation
Spacious, clean and the staff very polite. Food served very satisfying.
Not bad, but need to wait for 45mins to an hour. Not worth the wait. As the noodles still dun have the wow factor. Plus the price is on the high side and small in quantity.
Have heard much about this place. Watched Mike Chen came all the way from USA to try this and he like it. As a local, rice and noodle are our daily affair. IMHO, this bowl of noodle is average only. there's better noodles around.
Waited 40 mins for the Bak Chor mee, and it was delicious. I didn't ask for the one with tomato sauce, I personally would prefer the one just plain (做白) . It was worth the wait. One of the best bak chor mee I found in Singapore. Didn't manage to take the pictures of the noodles, was too hungry.
Very strong flavours, maybe too salty for my liking for a bowl of meepok. Fishball taste good but lacks texture. Pork lards are the over-fried till a slight bitter taste.
The bak chor noodles clock in at a pricey $5 per bowl... portions are small for what you pay. While the noodles are nicely done al dente, the seasoning was just too salty. The drinks stall however, does excellent teh and kopi. The iced versions are kick ass.
Above average, but not fantastic. Quite oily, soup's salty too.
Decent bowl of noodles, but nothing really special to rave about.
Unique in it's own way, tangy yet chewy, the signature is in the noodles al dente. Not everyone appreciates the "tomato sause" hints, so it goes down well if you're hungry. $5 a pop is more than adequate lunch portion, so don't try to pad it with more ingredients. Vinegar is a must for hard-core fans, but I don't prefer it masking the palate. Enjoy!
BEST Mee Pok in Singapore! fresh fish ball and quality of ingredients. Worth the time to wait.
my go-to for a nice bowl of kway teow soup.. similar to the penang style kway teow soup - savory soup, generous ingredients, with bits of minced pork, fish ball
Love the old school feel. Sitting under a tree shielded from the morning sun.
Noodles are only ever mind blowing when the boss does the cooking, but he rarely does now.
Not spicy enough, no tang of black vinegar, has become rather bland, though still taste good. Hahahahahaha, antiseptic wipes provided.
The noodle is great. One of the best fish ball noodles in SG.
Fresh ingredients, MeePok is QQ, chillie is to die for! Still the best in the East but be prepared to wait for 20mins during Breakfast and Lunch hours.
Here on Mon at noon , 4th day of CNY. Not too crowded, need to wait 45 min. Worth the wait. Mee pok was good!
Very good
Just a place to have lunch. Food is OK.
no need to upsize, medium is only two shrimps more than the small one
The mee pok is nice... only thing is the queue is always long...
One of my favorite mee pok in Singapore. The shop that was originally located in Ju Chiat has moved to Tanjong Katong, making it a little easier to access from my home. Thank you. I ordered in a relaxed mood, and as I was looking for a seat, I bumped into my co-worker. It's a little embarrassing to meet someone when they're off. Even so, this restaurant is so popular that I had to drive all the way from the CBD to eat there.
