Reviews of Maruhachi - Donburi & Curry
Was really a fantastic experience having paid much lesser than usual Tonkatsu Restuarant. All the tonkatsu we ordered taste almost identical to japanese restuarants. Its crispy on the outside, soft & tender on the inside. We ordered Blackpig Pork, Normal Pork and Chicken tonkatsu, all are good!
Got standard.. at hawker price! Eat there got restaurant feel I mean the food not the environment ya . Pork don not so good coz also very stingy with the eggs! But the pork and chicken cutlet was nicely done, tender and juicy eat there or bring home. The curry was nice but will be perfect if there is a choice of the spicy level . The sausage also so so , far from the original Japanese little devil crunchy and addictive. If you like more eggs like me I would recommend the special don … they will add an additional runny egg on top 🤤
The consistency and quality might have dropped slightly from the previous few times we were there during the COVID days where we would deliberately cycled from Hougang to this stall via the Sungei Serangoon/Punggol park connectors. It could be because we arrived relatively late this time round. It was closed to 9pm when we reached. Overall the food is still good, will revisit.
Had Katsu Curry Rice and Kutsu set. The portion was generous and its value for money. Food was good too in terms of taste and quality, though maybe still not as succulent as katsu from Saboten.
The queue was long.
Worth going back. Recommended.
It's unusual to find Japanese katsu in a hawker center, especially one not in a city center. It's one of a few stall in this place. Luckily there is no line today - probably because of the public holiday weekend. Nice setting by the river foot & bike path.
The katsu comes in 3 choices - donburi, curry rice or a set with side rice, cabbage and soup. Tried the set one as to keep the katsu from getting soggy from the donbury egg or curry sauce.
The crumbs was very crispy, pork is moist and tender even though ordered the regular pork katsu, not the black pig one. Rice was creamy, soup is nice not salty, cabbage could be sliced a little thinner but it's good with roasted sesame dressing. A plus that the sauce also come with mustard! And, at half price of city center restaurant price - it's a great deal.
Very nice Japanese curry rice in neighborhood cornerwith reasonable price. They are just a stall in coffee shop and lots of birds looking for food inside the coffee shop. I like Muruhachi but seriously won't want to go there too eat again if the coffee shop don't do something to the birds
Food presentation was good, each tonkatsu comes with shredded cabbage, lemon wedge and tonkatsu sauce and a bowl of Japanese rice. The let down been the pork loin and prawn coated with overly thick and compacted breadcrumbs, each bite tasted like breadcrumb sandwich with pork and prawn. For a food court standard, it’s alright but I would pay a little more to visit Ma Maison tonkatsu instead
It’s freaking amazing. Their signature pork katsu was huge and fatty and delicious. What’s better is the price. Amazing value, restaurant quality. Enough to fill a large eater like me. 👍👍
It tastes as good or even better than it looks.
Ordered the Black Pork Katsu Set for $15.80 and I daresay the quality of this katsu rivals most Japanese restaurants. The pork was fried perfectly, with a crispy panko exterior and a succulent tender interior. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pork katsu as it remained consistently crispy throughout the entire meal due to it being served on top of a wire rack. Katsu set was served with shredded cabbage with kewpie sesame sauce, a wedge of lemon, sauces (katsu, karashi), and a bowl of miso soup. The katsu sauce was sweet, tangy and it helps cut the greasiness from the katsu and the karashi introduces another flavour dimension to this meal.
Good pork katsu curry, definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!
What an affordable and great Japanese store! Ordered the Pork Katsu Don for $9.80 and the pork pieces were thick and tender, meaning it’s not over cooked.
Definitely would return again for this hidden gem
Overall, a better than average coffeeshop Japanese food. The breadcrumbs batter was an authentic touch and the curry was flavourful, but I could tell the cutlets have been prepared in batches, and the batter was thus a little soggy and crumbly than light and crisp, if it was prepared upon order. My cutlet was also lukewarm and dry, which could very well be because of the above said reason. Really hope they will go back to the days where they prepare each cutlet upon order, to make it a 5 stars experience. Those who are coming to try because of the hype, do lower your expectations to avoid being disappointed.
The Pork Katsu Set is delicious and perfectly fried! Truly a gem in the area!
One of the best Ebi fry I have tasted so far. The outside was very crunchy. Dip in the sauce is even tastier.
The Katsu Don and curry are nice too.
Prices of main dishes range around $8-$16. Very value for money for Japanese food.
I tried out an old suggestion from Ghib Ojisan. It was great. Foodwise it's on par if not better than say a Ma Masion at half the price. I had the katsu don. It was very tasty. My son had the katsu set. He felt the food was great but you get more meat for a lower price. After lunch, we walked along the Punggol Nature Walkway to the Punggol Settlements. It was an enjoyable trip.
It is damn good. I enjoyed their food more than some famous tonkatsu restaurant in sg. Cant find any fault in it. Freshly prepared and food is of a good portion as well. I have only tried their chicken katsu and ebi fry but it make me think that all of their other food items are of a similarly high standard. The other problem is the snaking queue and spent an hour to queue for my food..but the friendly and pretty japanese cashier make up for the waiting time. 😆
4 stars primarily because its located right in the HDB precinct. All portions are bigger in comparison to other coffeeshop stores but this reflect in the slightly above prices which I still deem worthwhile. Curry, Rice and Miso soup is norm and not disappointing. What is worth a second look and bite are the ever crispy Ebi, Pork and Chicken KATSU. Flaky and crispy! These are the main actors and look out for them! The missing star is due to their operating hours that is not correctly reflected in the google map operation hours and the lack of choices reflected at the store menu "blank out" .
Ordered the Chicken Katsu don and Chicken Katsu set. The chicken is indeed really crispy, the slab of chicken is thick and big. The sauce in the Don is good. However, the only downside is the meat is rather dry.
Maruhachi is definitely a gem in the Punggol area. In a quiet corner of an equally quiet estate, it serves Japanese dishes you usually find in restaurants. The Pork Katsu set I ate for dinner is pretty good! Crispy, tender and a good portion. That Wasabi-mustard on the side is awesome! But avoid it if you cannot take the kick in your mouth. Most items are at least $10; but think of the fortune you'll be saving from eating here rather than restaurants 😉
The chicken katsudon was really tender and flavorful yet not overly sweet or salty. Hidden gem! $8.80.
First time try as it was always long Q during dinner time. Pork is just nice and not too dry..Price is reasonable for Japanese food. Thumbs up..
Pork belly don at $6.80 incl gst.
Portion is foiling for me.
I find on the sweeter side but still accept
Found this stall in a neighbourhood coffeeshop while cycling around Punggol Waterway.
I had their Black Pig Tonkatsu set. Despite being located in a coffeeshop, I think their Tonkatsu can give many Japanese restaurants a run for their money. On the outside, it was crispy but not too oily. Inside, the meat was tender with a good balance of lean meat and some fats.
At first, the price tag may seem a little on the high side for a coffeeshop setting ($14.80 for my set meal). But after the meal, I felt that every cent I paid was worth it.
They have stamps accumulation too. Spend $8 and get 1 stamp.
One of the better curry rice you can get in a neighbourhood setting. Location not the most ideal, i have to say, but if you live around where they operate you're in luck. Curry has good thickness and consistency, and as close to authentic japanese curry at a reasonable price. Their Tonkatsu was pretty good as well.
Went there for their udon/ramen but realised that it was removed from their menu.
Settled for the dons instead.. Thick katsu with very thin and crispy batter. Definitely restaurant standard! Huge portions given. Price is definitely cheaper than restaurant but more expensive than coffee shop.
Ordered the Blackpig Katsu Curry; Glad I went for this as the pork had a decent amount of fats, would had been dry If it was just meat with the panko crust. Curry is mild and not too sweet, just the way I liked it :) Would definitely come back again. Environment is nice and chilled
Pork katsu had a good balance of oilyness/crisp. Pork meat was super juicy. Nothing too impressive on the curry though. Have also tried their fried ebi in the past, pretty good too! Although the price is quite high for a hawker store, we think it is worth it.
The signature black pork tonkatsu ($15.80) is very well done, better than some Japanese chain restaurants at same or higher prices. Definitely a gem in Punggol.
Coffeeshop seating is limited due to Covid safe management measures that halved the capacity.
Restaurant quality food at half the price. You even get stamps for every meal you bought, which you can exchange for discounts.
Ordered special oyako don, the meat is bland, but the egg is perfect.
Had the special pork katsu don. Taste is extremely similar to Ginza bairin that was previously at the basement of Ion orchard.
Queued about 1.5 hours for the food, so do come early if you want to try it. Quite a few of the items were also sold out by the time it was my turn to order.
This curry rice is indeed a hidden gem situated at happy hawkers! The katsu here is certainly on par with those of the restaurants.
Be sure to drop by here and try it if you haven’t!
Stall in Kopitiam selling Yayoi-like pork cutlet. Price point affordable. What's not to like?
Only unfortunate thing is the lack of space. But food wise, a must try! Had the Teishoku pork cutlet and the cutlet is so yummy with the meat tender while keeping an awesome crust. Every bite was shiok!
the food was very nice, the pork was delicious, tender and juicy. highly recommend! price v reasonable
Good food for great value! Recommending all my freinds to come here! It was not greasy at all and the meat was super tender for both chicken and pork.
Ordered their signature pork katsu curry, their curry has wow factor! Svc was quick n pork katsu remain crispy
Good value jap food, recommend their curry and katsu here!
Chanced upon this coffeeshop and the shop staff recommended their pork katsu dishes. Ordered the Special Pork Katsu and it was so good and worth every cent.
Ordered the oyster fry, it was hot crispy on the outside batter, with cold raw oyster inside. I like it, but may not be to everyone’s pref since its usually cooked fully.
10/10, worth future visits
Really good Japanese food for a coffee shop standard. However do expect prices to be higher than your usual coffee shop meal. Waiting time can be relatively long as well, do avoid the rush hour to avoid long waits.
Solid katsu don at 10 plus dollars. Perfectly fried katsu that retains its crunch even with the katsu sauce. Katsu itself is slightly fatty so that it’s not too dry. Rice is well done too and not too dry or watery. Will recommend! Got to try the teishoku next.
Tried the food at Punggol and was served hot and crispy. The price was reasonable and the service was great.
Would definitely go back again🥰
I dapao 2 sets of Pork Katsu set, taste ok as usual.
But this time I ordered an extra Ebi Fry @ $3.5. Photo shown 2 x Ebi, but small note under the photo listed (1pcs) only.
I felt $3.5 for 1 Ebi fry is too expensive, what do you think?
Big portion, crunchy and taste is authentic. Worth for the price paid. Happy to get the food fast with no queue around 1pm.
Tried the pork katsu set and oyster set, really like Tonkichi standard! Definitely will come back again!
I ordered the signature dish. They served fast and the standard is good too
Found a rare gem in punggol! Pork tonkatsu and curry tasted like restaurant quality and hawker price. Definitely a must try!
Really good, it's best to eat there rather than take away. For take away i prefer the curry.
The Tonkatsu set only cost $11.80 which is much cheaper than from a restaurant. It is restaurant quality while being so cheap. I cannot believe how such good food is located in a coffee shop with that price. It's been awhile since I got emotional eating food. Go there to try it if you haven't!
Good tasty food at affordable price. Though not as cheap as most Japanese stalls in food courts and coffeeshop it is cheaper than café. I saw their delivery of meat today and I recognise the packaging because I use the same supplier. It is good quality meats they use. You get for what you pay.
Very worth the price given the quality of food served.
Awesome Japanese katsu experience in a neighbourhood Coffeeshop. Price is slightly high for a Coffeeshop, but worth every cent as the ingredients used are of higher quality. Get a seat by the waterway and pretend that you're in Japan.
They use chicken breast, so it is a pleasant surprise that the chicken katsu can still be crispy on outside and moist within. But the same can't be said for the oyaku Don. The toughness of chicken breast was still there.
Food and prices reasonable but must be prepared for a long queue 😩
Great pork katsu at affordable price
Food is good, fast service
Portion was generous, very filling. Had the pork cutlet and it was one of the best I've ever eaten in SG.
Nice staff, food is freshly prepared 🙂
Nice and fresh Japanese food!
Decent quality and pricing
Great food and flexibility to order
Currently some parts under construction for outside shelter. Sets limited especially at peak hours during dining timing.
Pork quality is Meh. Rice is mushy. Eat if you have no other options.
MUST TRY tonkatsu! absolutely delicious and at the price, simply UNBEATABLE!
