Reviews of Master Chippy (Toa Payoh)
28th March 2025: Please note that they have shifted to Block 203, end coffee shop. Near Beatty Secondary School.
Besides their famous fish and chips (dory), this spicy seafood spaghetti was quite interesting and delicious. Not sure where this dish originated from, but I had something like that from Bangkok, one of the food courts. The sauce has black soya sauce in it with chilli and this version had the dry chilli on the side, something like a belacan but not sourish. The seafood were quite generous, with prawns, clams, mussels and even a small abalone. Try this if you like spicy.
Friendly staff who recommended us their signature dish. Prices is on the high side considering its location and not as economical as it claims online. Perhaps food prices are surging as well. Overall we loved the crispy fish batter, fresh halibut as well. Portion could hv been more, we topped up the mentaiko sauce fries for our halibut dish and it costs $18.80, quite comparable to restaurant pricing.
fish portion was generous, but was pretty dry. no sauce given though besides the usual ketchup and chili. mashed potatoes tasted very standard and ordinary, nothing fantastic. the amount of fries given was not a lot as well.
they allow you to pick any two sides with your main, so at least there is variety. however, i feel like it is on the pricer side for the quality and quantity of food given.
First time trying, would say it's not too bad 3/5.
Dory fish was quite fresh. As for the grilled chicken, was rather dry. Fries were soggy (ordered truffles and cheese fries). Mushroom soup was good.
Price was around $15/pax. Would say it's slightly on a higher price point for a coffeeshop setting.
Ordered the Pacific Dory fish & chips ($7.90) and the portion is huge! Well battered and fried. I like that they also included some fried batter bits at the side! Mashed potatoes and cold slaw were meh. Tip: add the malted vinegar that they have at their sauce table! Gives the fish extra oomph.
I tried their Sea Bass fish & chips ($15.90) on a separate occasion and was really disappointed at the fish. Could tell it was frozen fish, tasteless and dry. I usually don’t like Dory but in this case, I suggest you save the 💰 and go for it instead of their other selections.
Have heard a lot about the fish but the chicken burger deserves a mention.
Size of the chicken is massive, about 1.5x bigger than the bun itself.
Taste-wise, it is quite similar to the tandoori chicken burger in Bugis which is quite an amazing feat.
Used to be just a Fish n Chips place. Now revamped to include a lot more on the menu. Try their Bolognaise & Spicy Seafood pasta. It's just as nice as the fish dishes.
Amazing fish and chips as always. For the price, it's very value for money. Dory is soft and crispy on the outside.
Was at their Toa Payoh outlet. Ordered fish & chips (dory fish) & Grilled chicken.
Generous portions of fish and chicken + fries and coleslaw.
Reasonably priced
Will definitely return to try the other items on their menu
Somehow i felt, the past mr fish & chips was much more better....
The current taste is like moving towards Long John Silver.
Had the cod which is alright for the size but not much taste....
Fish was nicely battered. Crispy till the end. Inside very nice and moist and tender.
Fries was normal. Don’t expect five guys or Guzman fries there.
I had the halibut ($13.80++) with fries and mashed potatoes. Fries were great! The fish was nicely fried but it wasn’t very fresh. The mashed potato had a hardened layer which wasn’t very pleasant to the palate.
Tried the dory and the tilapia fish and chips. Both fish were not very flavourful. Batter was mostly crispy but a bit soggy in some places even though it was eaten within 5 minutes of being bought. The chips were tasty and just the right mix of crispy and soft in the middle, and by far the best part of the meal. Coleslaw and mashed potato were OK. Not very generous with the tartar sauce, which was badly needed to cut through the oily food. Overall, OK value for the price ($20 for 2 meals) as the quality is step up from usual hawker western food, but a bit too heavy and oily for my taste.
Order the crispy chicken burger. Very good deep frying skill. Potatoes fries n chicken were very crispy without any visible or mouth feel of oiliness.
This is a coffee shop. Therefore, do not expect aircon and everything is self service. However, food is delicious and atmosphere is chill. Wear your slippers and shorts and nobody would care. Stall and environs are clean and tidy too.
Ordered the Crispy Boneless Chicken and a truffle fries, overall not bad and the portion is large so worth the price. Would definitely come back to try out others on their menu.👍🏻
My first time trying Master Chippy. I would say totally worth its calories. Surprisingly, it’s crispy even it’s a Grab delivery (ie long hours trapped inside the packaging).
However, the order missed out my Malt Vinegar condiment and my truffle fries. So DO NOT bother paying extra $3.5 to get truffle fries from delivery, they would missed the order :/ and I didn’t get to try their highlight Malt Vinegar condiment. That ruined my first experience with Master Chippy.
Simple coffeeshop western food fare. Nice chill ambience.
As you approach Master Chippy @ Cafe Wok Inn, the tantalizing aroma of sizzling batter and freshly fried fish dances through the air, beckoning you closer. With each step, the aroma grows richer, promising a culinary delight that transcends expectations.
Your journey begins as you lay eyes on the masterpiece before you. Crisp, golden-brown perfection envelops each fillet of fish, promising a symphony of textures with every bite. The batter, a delicate veil of crispy goodness, crackles softly beneath your touch, hinting at the succulent treasure nestled within.
Bringing the dish closer, you're greeted by the sight of moist, flaky fish, its tender flesh practically inviting you to indulge. With a gentle prod of your fork, the fish yields effortlessly, releasing a burst of steam that carries the promise of savory satisfaction.
But it's not just the sight and smell that captivate your senses; it's the sound of anticipation as you break through the crispy exterior, revealing the tender flesh within. With each bite, the symphony crescendos, a chorus of crunches and sighs that echo the harmony of flavors dancing on your palate.
As you savor the first bite, your taste buds awaken to a melody of sensations. The fish, perfectly seasoned and flawlessly cooked, melts in your mouth, leaving behind a trail of oceanic goodness that lingers on your tongue. Paired with a generous serving of golden fries, each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and tastes, a culinary masterpiece that leaves you craving more.
And as you reluctantly take the final bite, a sense of contentment washes over you, leaving behind memories of a sensory journey unlike any other. Master Chippy's fish and chips isn't just a meal; it's an experience—a symphony of flavors and sensations that lingers long after the last crumb is gone.
Was served by Elavarasar at the counter and he was so cheery and polite, thumbs up for the great service!
Food was flavourful and portion is generous for the price ($8.90 - Bolognese Pasta). Will definitely remember the food/experience here since I don’t stay at TPY 😊
Bright cheery stall in a coffee shop at Braddell. Food here is best eaten hot and fresh after serving. Think of this place as a discount Aston's with more value. Mains get you 2 sides each; all the sides met my expectations, but it's worth noting that my company liked the sweet potato fries! This place exceeded my expectations, given that I'm not usually a fan of western stalls at coffee shops.
My gripe with this place is the serving portion, which was slightly small.
Serving is generous for the price. Fish batter is crispy Even consuming an hour after. Gave the chicken burger a try, and wow serving is also good with a nice tasty big piece of chicken In the middle. Bottomline this is truly a honest Fish & Chips shop. Must give it a try. My whole family loves it!
Sea bass was good and truffles fries . Spring chicken was delicious tooo, Thye have good standards for western food . Fish and chicken is fresh no weird smell. Go have a taste of this fabulous food
Ordered many times via GrabFood; extremely consistent tasty food. Their food is well-seasoned and portion-wise, they are quite generous. They are also very accommodating, normally requested for more tartar sauce and they provided.
Personally prefer their Dory over Tilapia. The chicken and its sauce (I think same sauce they use for their mashed potatoes) is just average though. Their chips (normal fries) and mashed potatoes are great, truffle fries are just average as it is not very fragrant and can barely taste the parmesan.
Best fish and chips around the Toa Payoh area! 😊
I like their food! Both their fish and chicken are really crispy yet beneath the batter, the meat is tender. I especially like their WhatsApp service where you can order beforehand and simply come by to pick it up later. It's really convenient!
Value for money and serving size was big. Selection of fish is limited to dory, tilapia and sea bass. Tried the dory. Batter was tasty and crispy but too brown, not sure if it was because of the oil. Tastes better with malt vinegar. Fish was overly mushy and soft. Will try the other types of fish if I happen to be in the area.
I find out your app some time got problem and go to the longer way. I also hope your app can update something like speed camera and the police around the area. I believe some people will forget the speed camera over there.I can say your maps app still got many things can be updated.
so glad i found them again!! have been patronizing their shop regularly when they were at braddel's johson eatery/pomo and was so upset when i thought they closed down. they serve fantastic fish and chips, full and fish instead of just flour. the chips play a huge part in a good fish and chips and their fries never disappoints! coleslaw was great too! opted for takeaway during this CB period and they even packed the condiments in little containers for us, very thoughtful!! rly rly good fish and chips, reminded me of the fish and chips i had in london a few years back
I actually hesitated to rate this place so well, because it would only make it that much more popular and it might follow the beaten path of great food declining in quality as they grow more popular. But in all seriousness, yeah the fish & chips rocked. I got the tilapia and it was absolutely worth the price. 5/5 will be back but please don't grow too big or too fast ...
I don't really like to write review. But master chippy is too good for me not to write. First order was a delivery, this time we have it for take away. The portion is super generous with reasonable price. Fish is not oily at all! Humble and friendly owner and staff ❤️
It was delicious and tasty chicken popcorn served by master chippy I strongly recommend this place for lunch and dinner in western food. Mr zinko and mohan helped with the menu very well. Thank you so much for the tasty food served.
We actually order 1 set grilled chicken steak with coleslaw and cheese fries $11.50 and Ribeye steak medium rare with coleslaw and mentaiko fries.
Ribeye steak abit not fresh.
Chicken overcook.
Coleslaw was watery.
But the cheese fries was nice, big portion and alot of cheese and mayo sauce.
Good fish & chips, Dory fish is quite normal. Try going for Tilapia and above. You will enjoy it. They have another branch at Upper Boon Keng area.
Fresh & quality fish & chips. Love it!
I had the Pacific dory with chips and mash and it was fantastic! Even though it's located a little out of the way, I will make the effort to come here on my next visit. Superb value too!
The portion is decent.
The Dory Fish ok, but the chicken is frozen, the smell of frozen is still there.
This is awesome, my fave fish and chips place moved next to my fave fish soup and chicken rice in Toa Payoh. I've followed this fish and chips chef as he moved around the island, his fish and chips are that good. 🤗
Finally it's back In Toa Payoh as I chanced upon few days back just scrolling casually on my grab on. Used to eat in TPY Lor 7 coffeeshop then it moved to POMO, tried once there as didn't have much time at hand.
Loving the British fish and chips feel. The mash is spot on and the fries is good.
Will be back for more
I ordered a delivery from them and the food came pretty fast. They're generous with their portions and sauces and I didn't find anything bad about the food itself.
The chicken steak was actually thick and juicy, unlike the usual thin and dry chicken chops you find at most coffeeshops.
The cheese fries were very reminiscent of KFC's cheese fries, which I would say pretty good overall.
Nice food, good service from the staffs too.
Having fish and chips here solved my fish and chips craving as it is that good!! Comes with malt vinegar too!!
The variety of sides is also another plus!
Very good fish & chips. Light crispy batter makes it absolutely delicious.
Found Mr Molina's fish and chips again!! .it has rebranded .. the fish n chips ..were like the good old days when he was at blk 95 tpy.. it's a standard by itself!
Very crispy batter. One of the better F&C. The cheerful yellow container deco in a coffee shop makes it a standout.
Comfort food with decent serving sizes, flavoured and prepared just right, and never too overwhelming on my palette. What more can I ask for?
Friend staff & great selection of western dishes. A little pricey but worth every cent.
Crispy and fresh. Would come back for sure!
Good fish and chips at this price range. Will be going back for more if have fish and chips craving
fish and chips taste fantastic
but only 1 piece 😔
Awesome, we got fish n chips in Toa Payoh, and it's worth it!
Big portion, quite affordable especially with 30% off for grab self pick-up
Good attending staff they have. Enjoy their food. Quality served.
Tasty fish and chips at an affordable price with sides that are actually not bad
Nice place for cheap Western food.
Pretty good fish but portion is small.
Friendly neighbourhood chippy ! Crispy fresh fish and superb service 💪🏽
Good UK fish and chips. Reasonable prices
Very fresh gory fish and good food
The chicken steak cannot make it, they fried the meat...
The food is not bad, but is a little soggy
Please maintain freshness and just stick to haddock.
Crispy fish with good side dishes.
Fish and chips is good and reasonably priced.
nice!
At a stall in a coffee shop in the rental area, the price is relatively expensive! It’s not a big restaurant! All I bought was Western food! The service is so-so! The environment is not very good!
