Reviews of Rumah Makan Minang - Kandahar Street
Air con on 2nd floor . A bit too spicy for me but good lemak flavour
Came on Monday 6pm, not much crowd however order indomee waited for 45min. Food was good. Hope can improve on the waiting time.
If Minang’s sole purpose is to monetise profits from tourism and not provide an authentic dining experience for anyone foreign or local, then they’ve succeeded tremendously.
$16.90 for take away rice consisting of 1x Sambal Goreng, 1x urap, 1x peanuts/ikan bilis, 2x bergedil, 1 TINY bony salted fish, 1x teh ice.
Upon reaching home, I opened the packet to see that the portion they gave was pathetic for the price they’re charging. The pricing doesnt justify the inconsistent portions. The amount of sambal goreng and urap was just slightly more than a tablespoon. I dont seem to be the only one complaining about their portions looking at other reviews. Teh ice was too milky AND diluted.
It will be my last time visiting for sure. Business costs are high i’m certain, but Minang has sold itself to capitalistic gains.
1 star reviews dont get seen usually so i’ll give them 5 for being successful in overcharging and under-delivering.
Landed in Singapore on a 9hr Layover so I had to come out and explore the place. After a 17 hour flight from Los Angeles and my stomach rumbling, I came here. Best decision!! the food was astonishing! I don't know what exactly I got but i choose by the way it looked hehe wkwkw. Beef rendang was my main aim and it was delicious!! Only thing is lack of napkins, So Americans beware ask in advance!
Super duper delicious. The beef rendang was super good but it was oily. This is the kind of shop I don’t mind patronizing even though the prices may be a little too steep but it’s worth it! Very difficult to find excellent and quality Malay/Nusantara cuisines in SG.
Maybe the management team can improve on the rate of service. Other than that, I will come back always!
Nasi Padang often gives people the impression of oily, unhealthy food - but this place is the opposite of that! First off, they serve BROWN RICE (which is soo rare); also, each dish was nicely flavored with its respective sauce/gravy yet it didn’t make me feel like I was binging on oil 😍😍😍
I actually enjoyed all the dishes, maybe except the tempeh, which isn’t done the way I would like it - the one here was sliced thinly and deep fried, so it doesn’t have the regular taste of tempeh that i’m used to haha.
Kueh dadar was interesting - it has a caramel flavour to it, and the coconut was juicy and the skin was...crepe like?
Teh tarik was good too, like what the other reviews have mentioned :>
Also, 5 stars for service!! The queue was longgg but the person taking our order was really friendly and willing to patiently answer our questions when we didn’t know what the dish was. They would also bring the food to your table, which is realllyyyy helpful considering the number of plates most people will be ordering haha.
This place was recommended by a native of Singapore, and we loved it. During our one week stay , we ate here three times. The food, the service, and the atmosphere... Great. It us very busy, and there is a seating upstairs in an AC room, as well as seating downstairs. Both are nice . It was very affordable, and the food was spectacular. We had various fish and peawn dishes, variety of salads and greens, and rice.
Great variety of food, authentic Indonesian cuisine. Although a bit pricey, targeted more for tourists.
Delicious halal food that was given 3 stars from food king. Beef rendang is rich and not dry. With every order they will give free curry veggies. Tahu telor is great tasting but a bit sweet. Milk tea is very nice and must order. Chilli is charged at $0.50
Food was typical nasi padang style but the taste is on the spot. Not too spicy, not too sweet. Self service. Location wise is perfect next to the Sultan Mosque
First time trying Minang Restaurant.
The Ayam Balado Hijau has one of the best chili that I've tried in Singapore. It not only packs a good punch, it also gives the chicken extra flavours which compliments it really well.
The Tahu Telor is very nice, it's fried tofu mixed with egg, drizzled with spicy & sweet peanut sauce. The portion is quite big, should be able to share with 4 people.
However, Daun Pucuk Ubi is a bit of a letdown, the gravy is not as flavourful as I had hoped, the leaves are a bit tough and too fibrous. I've tasted better in a Malay stall in a coffeeshop.
This is the best Padang food I have ever tried in Singapore.
It’s always crowded during weekend, so expect to queue for 45 minutes to get your food. The first time you arrive, you better reserve a table before start queuing, I learnt my lesson.
Their Daun Singkong is really soft, easy to bite, and delicious. Their chicken (all different cooking style) are on point for the flavor and the texture. The beef rendang is soft and tender, although it’s on a slightly sweeter taste. Definitely something that I’ll crave for.
Oh their chili is chargeable, so please take only what you need.
Absolutely the best Nasi Padang in Singapore - and believe me I have tried them all. There waa no dish I found badly done. Will return multiple times. Outdoor and air conditioned seating. Service with a smile. About $10-$15 per head.
Easily the best Indonesian food in the area. Gets very crowded so the earlier you go the better. They have an airconditioned space upstairs so you wouldnt have to sweat from the heat of SG and the sambal. Been a regular here now as their sambal hits a different note, not the oily non-spicy ones like other Indon restos in the stretch.
Indomie Goreng with Rendang is a great match if you want a mix of trying a well cooked indomie goreng and their signature beef rendang.
One of my favourite nasi padangs due to the spice but, it WAS PRICEY!
I believe rental in the area has increased a fair bit but each meat dish is $5! And is in such a tiny portion. The picture below has 3 meat dishes and came out to $17.50!! You could buy DINNER for a family from a regular nasi padang.
Well, I understood it was my fault for not checking but, I feel it would be nice for a signature showing the pricings of things.
Aside from that, one of my favourite places but definitely going to have to treat this place as a restaurant establishment rather than a traditional hawker/roadside establishment. Food was still decent as always, I’m glad that even though I overpaid, I had a decent meal.
Authentic padang cuisine with lots of padang dishes such as eggplant, sambal belado, fried chicken, sayur lemak, etc. They also serve awesome teh tarik and Indonesian classic Teh Botol. Located adjacent to Masjid Sultan. The cleanliness is impeccable and the restaurant staff can accommodate both English and Malay languages.
I love the food there, ate there even before they renovated. It used to be like a coffeeshop corner which food were cheaper then. The only problem is some days when theres super long queue, packet or dine in is the same queue. So when finally you get to order after queueing an hour, they informed that many stuff not available and I had to just settle with some food I didn’t like.
Halal restaurant that is suitable for the Indonesian palate. The location is close to the Sultan's Mosque so you can pray at the same time.
22.10.22 Lunch, damage $9 / Black Squid, Brinjals, Bitter Gourd.... Sedap meal but pricey. Spice level perfect for me, but not for my friends. A check at the surroundings coffee shops, not cheap either. Tourist prices..
Always into good Malay food and indeed this is a must try, good portion for good price. Taste wise was also good. Give it a try
We love it here! ❤️❤️❤️ It's always packed! So you have to come early...
We are 'boring' people 😝 and we seem to always revert back to our comfort food
- Beef Rendang, tender and juicy 😋
- Sambal Goreng, generous amounts of tempeh and Tauhu with ample long beans 😋
- Begedil, nicely seasoned and spiced 😋
- Sayur Lodeh, fantastic consistency such that we could sip the gravy, much like soup 😋
- Tauhu Telur, Tauhu was fresh with generous amounts of carrots and lettuce plus the sauce was delicious! 😋
- Kueh Dar Far, Kueh Salat ( Kueh Srri Muka) and Onde Onde.
WE LOVE IT HERE!🥰🥰🥰 We're surprised that we haven't left a review yet 🤦 perhaps we were too eager to gobble our food 😝 this time, we ordered takeaway... Lucky you!
Plus commendations to the staff - Despite being busy and seemingly impatience, (but who could blame them? Just look at the crowd!), they managed to pull of a smile always. Every single one of them. And polite too
Always a pleasure having a meal here or taking it away 😜
This place serves the most amazing Padang food in Singapore! Really organised ordering system and nice air conditioned seats on the second floor. Prices highly affordable too despite their popularity! Must try dishes are the tahu telor and beef rendang! Begedils are amazing too
Great food, reasonable price, nice environment upstairs with air cond. Peak hour at lunch time w office staff and tourist. $6 for rice w 5 veg + kueh $1.50
Craving for tahu telor and came here since I was nearby. Food was good, but I have never come across bad tahu telor in Singapore. However, $9.50 is kin of expensive.
One of my Favourite Nasi Padang stalls!
Fevourite must order dishes whenever I'm here are:
Beef Rendang • Southeast Asian spicy meat dish
Sayur Lodeh • Southeast Asian vegetable soup prepared from vegetables in coconut milk
Begedil • deep fried potato mash patty
Love love love! Must go!!
Loads of selection and great tasting food just outside of Sultan Mosque! Don't be phased by the queue as this moves quickly.
Good food with fresh ingredients! Could be a bid spicier but I guess it's more accommodating to the masses. The ikan Assam is my fave. Not as cheap as the typical neighborhood fix but worth the occasional indulgence. Even extra serving of chilli or Belacan will cost u.
Busy place at lunch but that's where u get the most variety of dishes
The rendang is awesome!
Price is slightly ex, but I guess acceptable considering the location and the rendang portion is v generous.
13 dollars for everything in the pictures (include drink)
My go to place for Nasi Padang. Ok, just to qualify, I don't eat nasi padang that often so my benchmarking is limited to the few places I've been to. Still, every time I'm here, the sensory delights from every bite is just amazing. The whole place is very clean and it's in a nice location as well. Highly recommended!
Finally got my chance to eat at this restaurant. One of the very good Nasi Padang around. Every dishes that I had was lovely. Even the tea was very very good.
Street styled restaurant offering authentic Indonesian cuisine. Tried the Ayum Rendang along with a variety of other dishes. It was spicy but all the flavours perfectly harmonised providing a treat to the taste buds.
I visited for lunch with my friends. It’s a great experience. Food is good, and the menu offers a wide variety of delicious and mouthwatering food. I’d love to visit again. ♡
Average food but interesting environment.
The thick omelette is nice and the veggies are salty
Chicken and beef rendang are good. Tofu telur is also recommended. Ask for brown rice!
10/10 beef rendang!!! Mind blowing. So amazing, and halal!
Love the food here. But beware, the belacan chilli is atomic!
Always a long queue when ordering food. Payment immediately at the end of the queue. Curry chicken, beef rendang, sotong, tauhu goreng etc are our favourites.
Not a wide selection of can drinks. Hot drinks ok.
Just beside Masjid Sultan (the famous Sultan Mosque). Dining with a great view
Visited n ate for early lunch ,food nice n delicious except for the beef rendang which is quite tough today .
Wonderful food. Super affordable. True local experience!
Delicious food and nice view of Sultan Mosque nearby. Place can be very crowed during lunch. Try to come early to avoid long queue.
Asam fish was nice. A little pricey.
Since we moved to Singapore 7 years ago, we go to this restaurant a lot, because their nasi padang taste like the real nasi padang in Indonesia, unlike most other nasi padang restaurants in Singapore. We got used to the faces behind the glass box serving us food, we saw them renovated the building making it more modern and nicer. After Covid lockdown however, the staff have changed, and we noticed that the food quality also has gone down. I meant to say, some weekend the food is the same like what we get used to expect from this restaurant, but other weekends, it seems that they changed the cook, so the taste is different, and most importantly the rendang is also different with the meat has more fat than the meat itself, but then a couple weekends after everything went back to normal. This last visit, today 17th June 2023, the food is back to the "bad" version we're not used to, fatty rending, and the portion is really stingy, we asked for Bayam, and we could count how many strand of spinach was there on our plates. They raised the prices due to inflation, and we were okay with it, but today experience, with such little portion, fatty meat that just cannot be eaten, different taste, more expensive bill, it's quite disappointing, especially since we've been coming here from the start of our Singaporean journey. I hope next weekend and the weekends after the portion, meat quality and taste will be back to what we are used to. We have no problem paying more, given, the portion, quality and taste match up with the bills.
TL;DR- Sedap! (Delicious!) 'nuff said.
REVIEW: Delicious Nasi Padang, and check out the teh tarik! 😜. We like to sit downstairs (sorta al fresco-like) to enjoy the breeze and the ambience on saturday mornings. There's a lot of human traffic through here- regular patrons, tourists, stumblers (they stumbled on to the place- aren't they lucky?).
Lots of variety, you will be spoiled for choice. If you opt for dishes instead of individual meals, a server will help carry the huge 'dulang' (tray) for you right to your seat. If the weather seems a little too hot, head upstairs for a cooler area. Air-conditioning at the top is strong, so your food will turn cold easily, so eat fast. Food is slightly on the pricier range - a good tip is not to overbuy your dishes, a group of 4 can share 3 or even 2 portions worth of dishes. Happy eating.
Food is always the best here , eating here for more than 15 years and no doubts on their quality, serving and taste
Long queues are expected during lunch time as usual, and finding a place to sit during lunch time can be difficult but manageable as they will also assist in finding for you.
At.level 2 there is another dining location to cater to the demand so have enough seating area.
Just next to Sultan Mosque and location is easily reachable. Plenty of parking around the place and nice views of Historical building, street and Arts.
Lots of veriety of dishes to choose. Price is a little at the high side, however, the food is nice and the portion they serve is just right. Will definitely go again for nasi padang.
Brought HK guests to taste the malay muslim traditional food because they like spicy food. For them its delicious BUT for me its spicy?? Anyway I am glad they enjoy it. 👍
The food is never a disappointment. Just that whenever I'm there it's always crowded and hard to get seats.
A wonderful little Indonesian place with outdoor seating in a plaza area outside Singapore's famous mosque. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. Very popular, so best to visit outside main meal times. The only bad thing is that they close early in the evening.
Visited 1 mth ago.
Find the food average, beef rendang not to my expectation, abit too tough. Overall, this restaurant is overrated, I can find better Malay cuisine at my food court near my home with cheaper price 😉
Awesome nasi padang! Every dish was amazing and delicious but, special shoutout for the tahu telur! Teh tarik is incredibly aromatic and also another must try!
Service is pretty slow, so, be prepared for a queue and a long wait, the people taking orders for drinks can also be slightly overwhelmed as they are also manning the cashier.... Just be aware and go there with a happy heart because the food is worth it at the end of the day!
Went with frienda for lunch. The place is crowded at lunch time, but the crowd is fast moving and got a tble very soon. Ordered beef rendand, chicken rendang and few more dishes. In all the food is very good in taste as well as its price. For a variety of diahes and drink, the total was just $45. Tbe food was fast delievered and the service ia very good. Do ordrr the veggies and the potato cutlets. Will visit again for sure.
Great food and great service
Loved the beef rendang so much as well as the small desserts!!
If you'd like to try Nasi Padang (& halal), this is one of the best place you can experience that in the area. They have an array of dishes to choose from non-spicy to spicy and the tahu-telor (tofu-egg) is delicious too!
Good place and the restaurant near with the mosque, and the food 100% halal.
Whenever you pay a visit to Singapore!Make a point to come over to this eating establishment and have your fare of “Nasi Padang”! All my colleagues love their dishes and some of them recommended their friends too! From their - Tahu telur, Ayam Masak Gulai,Beef Rendang, Begedil, Ikan Sambal Merah Berlado and many more to choose from.
I visited September 2022 with my children. We ate more and more. Food is delicious and authentic West Sumatra Food as We come from Padang. Thank you.
I was asked to eat local food near the Sultan Mosque, so I was taken there.
Perhaps because it was late, they said they couldn't set a menu, so I looked at the ingredients in the case and asked them to specify what they wanted. Maybe it was a little too much haha
I can't handle spicy food, so should I add chili sauce? When asked, I said yes, but it wasn't spicy at all and was delicious.
The food is really delicious, I hope you can come back here again, always successful. Very close to the Sultan Mosque
Enaaak.. the taste of the field!
The spices and flavors are the same as in Indonesia
The price is relatively cheap for the SG size, like the price at Hawker
My favorite food is because I don't really like Malay/Arabic food
Yesterday, I ordered rice + rendang + green chili sauce (mixed/rames) for SGD 6... very cheap and delicious food, fluffy, tasty rice, friendly waiter
All the way to Singapore to eat Padang food😅 but the prices here are different. Ber 3 $ 20 ....Rp. 200,000
Location in front of the Sultan Mosque on the left.
Please stop by...
It’s more delicious than I thought!
Originally, I was going to go somewhere other than here, but it was nice to go in because it was hot. It's a bit spicy, but the chicken is delicious.
Looks like a local restaurant
Near the mosque. Lunch queue was a bit long. The food is all pretty good, clean, prices are pretty 'Singaporean'. Ordering Minang style egg tofu is also delicious even though it tastes like sweet rujak spices in Malang where I live
Minang cuisine in Singapore but the taste is no longer typical of authentic Minang, it is mixed with Malay flavors
This is a Padang restaurant that you must visit when you go to Singapore. Praying at the Sultan's Mosque has always been a mandatory destination every time I come to Lion Country, plus after that I always have lunch at this Padang restaurant. I don't know why it tastes really authentic, delicious and savory, and the spices are deeper than traditional Padang food, especially in Indonesia. This original is one of the best tasting maka na padang available. Must try....
Authentic Padang/Minang food. The beef rendang is to die for. They also do some cakes, such as layer cakes.
