Reviews of Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh
The first impression was that this was an old school kind of restaurant. It seems like you've travelled back into the 80s/90s. The prices were very, very affordable, with most dishes around $10. We got the two fish dishes, and it was $12 for a large portion, and I thought there must be a catch to this. It can't be so cheap, right? There was a catch. It was dory fillet meat. Distinctively cheap, frozen dory meat. That was why the portions were so much. Aside from that, flavour wise, it was good, both the sweet and sour one and the ginger scallion one. But the dory fillet simply spoiled it for me.
The most prominent dish the bak koot teh, was honestly mediocre only. It wasn't fantastic. The only nice dish I would recommend is the braised egg plant. It's not on the menu, so ask them for the braised egg plant instead of the sambar egg plant.
Clean and orderly place. Service was prompt and helpful.
The Bak Kut was so tender and juicy. Almost melt in the mouth. Soup gets more tasty as you drink.
Managed to get parking right in front of the shop at off-peak hours, 2.30pm.
Lots of their dishes are served in claypots, with various size and content for onr to select. Our favorite is the pig tail, braised to perfection and still got the boucy soft bone texture~ The special BKT is normal, liver a bit chewy probably cos overcooked in a boiling claypot, ribs are good though and tender. Next time will order ribs and pig tails only. Service is not bad, staff helpful to explain about dishes. Their soup can be refilled, but not very rich in herbal taste.
The meat was tender & nice, the herbal soup was alright, only wish they have enoki mushroom to add on like the jb style.
Rice was hard maybe is the quality or over cooked. But will give it a try again
Overall food is good. Pork rib is fresh not frozen. 2 types of soup selection. Suggest not to order herbal type as it's a bit salty to me. Youtiao 油条 think is double fried to make it more crispy. Too oily and Suggest using a toaster instead. More other dish available. Will come back again when craving for bahkutteh
The bak kut teh is not the usual peppery nor herbal kind. Clear soup style, however finds it abit taste like hot soya sauce water. The meat is still ok. Tried their sesame soya sauce chicken. The chicken were cut to too small pieces, and boney. Overall taste is just normal, not fantastic taste to shout out.
The claypot innlet is average as the seasoning is on the heavy side, and will need rice ease the saltiness.
The soup based BTK is herbal based, it is palatable and well seasoned. They are generous with the pork ribs and you tiao too.
Overall, would prefer to dine in than take away next time.
Personally prefer the herbal variety of BKT, and this did not disappoint — soup was flavourful and not too salty. The pork ribs were decently sized. We ordered the L sized special BKT that came with 6 pieces of pork ribs. Other dishes were decent as well. We had the pig trotters, sambal kang kong, kailan and chicken wings. Total bill came to around $70 for 4 people, which is quite affordable.
There is a consistent queue here albeit one that moves surprisingly quickly!
Sin Heng's Special Bak Koot Teh a herbal soup that's sweet, savoury and slightly thick. It's comes with pork rib, mushroom, liver, intestine, black fungus, tofu skin and lettuce.
Fuyong Omelette. A slightly salty egg with lapchung, onions and spring onion which goes well with rice.
You Tiao. It was crispy hard. Soak it in the soup and it'll absorb the soup and soften up.
Chrysanthemum tea by the pot. Comes already sweetened.
Overall not too bad. Service was quick.
We first tried this restaurant at random after having coffee at the nearby Humble Origins cafe (excellent coffee by the way), and it immediately become one of our favourites!
The Sesame Oil Chicken is a definite must try. The sauce goes very well with rice, especially when eaten together with the chicken. Immense self control needed to not hijack the entire bowl of sesame oil chicken for myself.
The Special Bak Koot Teh consists of pork ribs, pork intestine, fried beancurd skin, button mushrooms, and a few other ingredients. The soup is the herbal type, but is very well-balanced without the typical overpowering herbal taste of similar-styled soups. Each spoonful was like a trip to a soup paradise.
The fried chicken wings was well-marinated and delicious, with a mild prawn paste flavour that is very well-balanced and not overpowering. The wings were also fried well, not too oily, crispy on the outside yet tender and juicy on the inside.
We also had the sambal kang kong (good), pig trotter (average), and beansprouts with salted fish (good). The preserved vegetables were also tasty, according to my dining companion.
The only drawback of dining in is the lack of air-conditioning. Makes sense, as they wouldnt want customers to hand around and hog the tables, especially at dinner time when queues of up to 20 people form.
All in all, an excellent restaurant for bak koot teh and other dishes mentioned above.
The soup is the herbal type (Malaysian type) but with pepper. So this is more like a combination of both Malaysian and singaporean versions.
Ordered the special claypot bak kut teh (large) and claypot bak kut teh (large). The special version had different parts with vegetables etc. The claypot version only had pork ribs. Large size had 10 pork ribs. Medium had 6.
We also ordered the claypot fresh prawns vermicelli which was yummy.
There were long queues the few times I visited or walked pass. Very popular in this area. Didn't have to wait very long for a table though. And the orders were made in advanced while queuing.
Can pay via favepay to get rebates.
Kind of funny a Bak Ku Teh shop their Bak Ku Teh is not nice. Order a $10 Special Bak Ku Teh supposedly be their signature dish? Not really fantastic to be honest. However the seaseme chicken is very tasty and also the the noodle. The noodles are only 1 size but I think enuf for 3-4 pax. Order the prawn paste spring roll and also the fried chicken with oat both taste so so only. I have Q up almost an hours to taste something not nice so unlikely will come back again for the Bak Ku Teh. However the noodle is something worth coming back but for takeaway and certainly not going to dine in. Total 5 dish for 2 pax cost about $55 so kind of expensive I feel.
Parking just outside the restaurant can be quite limited. And you have to move the car once you’ve done with dinner otherwise they will clamp the car. Food wise it’s quite comparable to other bak koot teh around. This is the herbal version rather than the peppery version.
Favourite bak koot teh store but the amount of ingredients have been decreasing unfortunately. If you’re taking away, can visit their website to order and get some discounts. Try to visit before 10.30pm to avoid disappointment as their pork rib runs out around that timing. Favepay and Grabpay available for payment.
This is a cosy and traditional Bak Kut Teh shop with a history. It serves a good and delicious meal with reasonable prices. The service is good and there is free parking for dining guests, a big plus point.
Tried Sin Heng Bak Kut Teh. It's herbal based. The feelings mixed ... My wife really likes it, but I find the soup slightly underwhelming like some other reviewers. There's not a lot of herbal flavor in it compared to the ones I had in Johore or KL. But it does provide a fix. In terms of ingredients, for $16 medium size mixed soup, the ingredients werent as generous as what I think it should be. Pig liver was over cooked unlike what you can get from founders/rong hua/song fa or other famous chains. Pork ribs has this porky taste, youtiao was soggy andnot freshly fried which leads me to think there's a lack of professionalism. Not sure if it's a bad day for the restaurant, but it's not a bak kut teh that I would crave for. My wife likes it though so it's mixed. Will say go if you want a herbal bak kut teh fixed, but try then try yourself and let me know your thoughts.
There's not much herbal taste from the bak kut teh. 4 pieces of bak kut for their medium size famous bak kut teh. Food taste average. Only good thing is free parking if u are dining at their place.
The bak kut teh here is Darling's fave. I find it Ok, but wish they had peanuts.
We also always order the dry bak kut teh, which I think has too much ginger flavour.
Saving grace is they sell you tiao!
Take away:herbal bak ku teh(herbal taste atad light), Pig trotters(fragrant w more fats than lean), and sesame chix(tasted e best out of 3!). Overall nt bad but won't purposely go buy or eat unless in the area. Herbal taste bak ku teh Geylang's Ba Sheng is nicer peppery Song Fa is nicer.
First time here. Many customers here for Sunday lunch. Besides back Ku teh, they oso offer sze char kind of food. The bak ku teh soup is not pepper taste or herbal (like Malaysia style). It more toward garlic taste with good soya sauce and it’s not oily. No MSG. Due to high cholesterol, I did not ask for stomach & liver. Lots of button mushrooms, etc. For a medium size order ($16) there r 4 pieces of ribs.. Stir fried bean sprouts was very good.
Bought the plain meesua and claypot bkt M for 3 to share.
The ribs were so bad. Maybe I came at a wrong time. The meat was so tough.
However, the herbal soup in the claypot is pretty decent. Enjoyed it though it’s a tad salty.
The meesua was one of the better ones I’ve eaten ever. If compared to Shilin kinds, this one wins! It’s a very smooth texture!
Would come back again for the meesua and others, but not the BKT.
03.05.2018: highly recommended
The chef special is Claypot Bak Kut Teh (瓦煲肉骨茶), they have 4 different size of clay pot (S, M, L, XL) and kinda considerate to let solo eater like me to have just fitted portion, no doubt that Claypot Bak Kut Teh tasted great and service was also excellent, lots of local ppl eat here even on Thursday late night, 11.40 pm, and that tells you something, right!
Delicious peppery herbal bak kut teh, and portion sizes are very good. We got a medium size bak kut teh so probably could have gone without a noodle, but still managed to finish both anyway!
Great food at reasonable prices. Had dinner for party of 4. Ordered the signature Claypot Bak Ku Teh, the prawn vermicelli, claypot tofu and har jeong chicken. Bak ku teh is the black medicinal version. Meat was juicy and succulent. The small size ($8) prawn vermicelli comes with 5 large sized prawns. Har jeong chicken was large sized as well, not miniscule ones that some restaurants tend to serve - very worth it.
Herbal style bak kut teh which is kinda hard to find good ones in Singapore. Food has been tasting the same over the last 10 years as I been going there since young.
Do try the sesame chicken for a change of taste.
Do go early as there will be a queue around peak hour or dinner timing. Queue wait can vary as it depends on how fast the customer eat.
Free parking for people who dine here.
Dine in to get alittle Malaysia feel.
The pork rib is tender, soup is good.
The prawn omelette nice.
Yam rice tastes good.
Not bad. Pig’s tail was good. BKT meat was a bit dry. Other dishes were ok.
This place has been around for decades as far as I can remember. Soup is dark and slightly herbal, not the clear peppery ones from the more famous outlets in Singapore. Still a good choice if you want bak kut teh. The braised soya sauce intestines and liver are very good too. Overall the food quality is satisfactory if not memorable.
After coming for many years, standard still maintained. Service is fast. Prompt in topping up soup. Will continue coming back.
Average bak kut teh, nothing special, except they give 4 ribs instead of 3 as at some other places. Also the youtiao is not freshly made so a bit cold, oily and rubbery. Note that soup is herbal, not the pepper kind.
Food is good, orders are taken by staff uaing a tablet (which is really cool), because the setting of the resturant looks like an air conditioned place from the early 1990s.
Also pls order the Special (black or herbal type) bak kut teh and pig trotters.
Nice herbal bakuteh in Singapore but not as good as the one in Malaysia!
Ordered medium herbal BKT($17) and sesame oil chicken($9). Both were good. Medium comes with 4 pork ribs and other sides like beancurd skin, mushrooms, innards etc. Can refill soup, which is a plus point for us. Portion just enough for two.
Minus one point because the innards does not taste good, which isn't a show stopper if you are not particular about that.
Overall not bad and willing to come back again for some good herbal soup.
Good and reasonable priced food. The place is clean and friendly staff.
The young guy who took my order was polite. Soup was good and tasty
The staff will help you order before you get seated. The BKT soup is the herbal kind.. you can refills as well. The pork meat is tender and fall off the bone.
You can order side dishes like the sweet and sour fish and fried Thai tofu. Both are a must order for me.
Now they accept favepay and you can get 5% rebate. 😃
We had the classic BKT, sesame chicken, sambal kangkong, and braised brinjal (which is super nice)
Prawn vermicelli and Bak Kut teh must try cause it might become your favourite
Been coming here for years! Felt standard has dropped a little bit. But still good for me!
Old school Bak Koot Teh, portion quiet small so must order more food.
The best and my fav Bak koot teh ever!
Ordered just a bowl of prime pork ribs BKT, for a quick fix. It was authentic Malaysia style black herbal soup and the meat was succulent. Considering that Malaysia is out of reach now, it's well worth the price, for a short "I was in JB" feel...
If only the price was in ringgit, then it would had completed the experience...
They sell many other Tze Char dishes! Tried the claypot noodle and it was unexpectedly good!
It was so so , fried kai lan was good(I don't even eat kailan most of e time )😂 I think we over order for 3 pax 😅
Tried both the herbal and pepper version of the soup. While they're not bad, I feel that the taste is lighter than Song Fa (pepper version) or Jia Bin (herbal version), which I prefer compared to Sin Heng. The portion size is quite generous though.
Updated review after 4 years since last visit. Prices have inevitably gone up. Spent around $70 on a dinner for 4 pax. 1 soup, 1 vegetable, 1 plate of chicken wings and 1 plate of prawn rolls, 3 side dishes and 5 beverages.
The carpark attendant Chinese uncle is no longer working there. Kinda not used to not seeing him while dining there.
Have always enjoyed the BKT from Sin Heng and my family has been patronising them for 20+ years. I don’t really think that their soup is very herbal-ish as described by some of the reviews, but it’s got a pretty balanced taste to it with a nice peppery aftertaste. The har cheong kai here is also pretty good
I ordered the mixed organs vermicelli. Although it was pricey for a bowl, it was apparent that alot of work went into prepping and cooking of the organs. Taste was clean and delicious. I would definitely want to come back in a larger group to try out more dishes :)
Ordered the bak kut and kidney.
Standard might be dropping but the soup still taste more less same as before.
If you like dark soup this is the place to go to!
Parking is limited and free for patrons
A great place for bak kut teh! A fan of herbal based soups instead of the usual clear pepper ones. They serve you extremely quickly especially for those who go there famished. The meat can be slightly hard sometimes but that isn't too much of an issue. The other dishes are good too if you are into innards.
If you are driving, parking can be quite hard as there is limited road side parking and the spaces available outside the restaurant is usually take up too. There are a few malls along the katong stretch for you to park at but it will be quite a walk.
I really enjoy the herbal taste and at affordable price. Soup refill is avaliable for no cost. Advice to order the medium size for 2 pax. Fried vermicelli was also savoury
Great for weekend lunch dabao!
This bak koot teh is the herbal kind where you can taste the herbs. Very favoured if you like this kind of bak koot teh. They sell orher dishes too like zichar stall. However, the menu did not indicate drink and item like you tiao, chye buay and even rice and the yam rice. We got to ask the server if they provide after seeing other table had such items on table.
Flavorful herbal + pepper soup.
Meat also is soft.
While not far by taxi or car, it is quite some way by public transport. There is no nearby MRT.
The best landmark to aim for is 112 Katong, the flash and fancy new shopping mall in the Joo Chiat neighbourhood.
Like a lot of local restaurants that I visit, Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh is best visited at lunch rather than at dinner, where it can get crazy busy. When I have come here in the evening for dinner, there is often a queue outside. Don't forget, this is not the easiest place to get to by public transport so it's quite a feat to have people queuing.
I don't ever recall ordering the "Special" version. I normally just order the normal claypot version. And the small. Though on occasion I have been known to go crazy and order the medium.
Just as a reference, the small has 4 ribs in, but with the soup it is quite a substantial portion.
Then there is the choice of drink. They don't as wide a variety as a normal restaurant. Just your typical local fare ... they do have coca-cola for those of you who like to support Warren Buffet. The staff are more than happy to suggest a drink; sometime too much so! Me personally I wanted lime juice. And they suggested, Lime with Prune.
If you don't like sour things, this is not the drink for you. It actually known as sour plum so brace yourself. If you do order it, make sure to stir it up before you drink it, or else if you drink from the bottom you might get a whole mouthful of sour plum juice; or if you drink from the top you might get some very diluted juice, followed by a whole mouthful of sour plum juice. HAHAHA!!!
Now on to the preparation. The chillies are an important component to this dish. Once they have taken your order, the server will bring two baskets of chillies. One with the small variety and another with a larger variety. The large ones are the gentle sweet variety; the small ones? Well, they're the knock you socks of type.
What I typically do is mix them up and then pour both light (salty) and dark (sweet) soya sauce in one of the sauce dishes. My logic is that the light sauce encourages the mixing of the chillies and the sauce, while the thick sauce clings to the rib meat. Actually I don't eat a lot of the chilli, mainly I use it for flavouring the soya sauce.
Bak Kuh Teh, is usually prepared much earlier, perhaps even days in advance. This makes the meat particularly soft and easy for it to come away from the bone. The claypot is hot and thus keeps all the contents nice and hot as well.
WARNING: the soup is hot hot hot. The claypot retains heat super super well, so be prepared to have your mouth burnt if you try to slurp it down. I have been here too many times and too many times I have ended up burning my mouth!
INNARDS!!!!
I know this is not for everyone, but I have to say that this is one of my favourites. The sauce is nice and thick and quite sweet. I suspect they use the dark soya sauce for it. They also add ginger and garlic.
I went for yam rice which I find a bit more filling.
So you are eating the ribs, and the innards, and now you wish you could have more soup.... Well here it how you do it.
First, you signal to one of the wait staff that you need their attention. You can prance up and down like a pony, but a simple raising of the hand also works.
Second, when you finally get someone to look at you, and this can be a few minutes wait when it's very busy. Make the thumbs up gesture, but then turn it upside down until you are pointing at the empty bowl of soup. Repeat this action until the wait stuff copies it back to you.
Third, sit aimlessly while the server makes their way to the back of the restaurant (to the kitchen) grabs a saucepan and fills it with soup. They will eventually make their way to your table and refill your pot.
You may wonder what you should be doing with bones .... just dump it on the table. When I first came to Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot (Bak Kut) Teh, I tried to work out the best place to put the bones. And everyone seemed to just leave them on the table.
Awesome spot for bak koot teh and a great pit stop for general late night food (or bak koot teh).
Service is friendly and swift, the menu is quite diverese beyond BKT, the quality is good and the execution is immaculate as it should be from a place with decades of reputation.
Go anytime for the bak koot teh special, can't go wrong!
very comforting! i love the bah koot teh here
Nice bakuteh. Can give a try. Limited parking at front restaurant.
The Ba kut teh soup is superb!!! And the seasme chicken was great.
But the price was a bit expensive for 2 pax and 2 dishes. Cost us about $28.00
Feel good with bah koot teh after so long.love it must try once.
Late night bak kut teh sesame oil chicken and dry bak kut teh
3rd time eating here. It is rly a good bkt and the meat slides off the bone with minimal effort. Only problem is the lack of aircon and waiting time. Idk how people can eat hot bkt at lunchtime in such an environment tbh.
Comfortable Place with Hot Peppery Soup and Tze Char Choices.
One of the better Ba Kut Teh around. Expect to wait for a table and your food during peak times.
The minced pork with eggs is also good.
Herbal broth was good but the pork ribs were tough, claypot Sesame oil chicken was delish 😋
A traditional bak kut teh place. The soup is not the peppery kind but rather the herbal version. A matter of preferences but I love it nonetheless.
Utensil not clean, staff attitude poor. Meat a bit overcooked.
Overall the food is still nice.
My all time favourite bak kut teh .Reasonable price, tasteful and good quality food. Must try their Vermicelli with prawn 👍.
Nice! Soup base tastes like it been cooked for few hours and is rich and herbal enough. Not too bitter and good enough
Had bak kut teh soup and claypot stirred mix xx
Wow! This bowl of rich Chinese herbal bak kut teh is really amazing! 🍲 Not only does it have the unique salty aroma of Bak Kut Teh, it also blends with the unique flavor of Chinese medicine, making every bite full of surprises!
The soup is rich, the meat is tender, the ingredients are fresh, and every bite is full of rich textures. The aroma of Chinese medicine makes this Bak Kut Teh unique and has a unique flavor.
This is a bak kottaya restaurant that serves meat in a clay pot.
It is located along Joo Chiat Road in Katong district. It is within walking distance from the local bus stop.
This bak kut tea is a black soup, similar to Chinese herbal soup. The special and regular prices are the same, but I recommend the special with lots of ingredients.
My friend recommended taro rice and fried bread (youtiao), so I ordered them together and it was a great decision! The fried bread soaking up the soup is delicious! And the taro rice goes well with bak kut tea and is delicious!
It's always hot in Singapore, so bak kut tea, which has a strong salty taste and gives you stamina, seemed like the perfect choice.
I also had sour plum juice, which was also delicious. It was a lunch that wiped away all my fatigue!
The restrooms are also clean and the staff are friendly. You can also process credit card payments, which is very convenient.
The restaurant is large, so you can have a relaxing meal.
Card payment is possible. There is no air conditioning inside so it is a bit hot. The service was quick and the taste exceeded expectations.
A store you must visit when you come to Singapore. I'm glad it's open until late at night.
The bak kut teh is Malaysian type, with lots of ribs, and the yam rice is also good. There can be quite a line during the day, but if you change the time you can get in easily.
The small portion of Bak Kut Teh has four pieces of meat
The soup is a big bowl
Drink it and your mouth will be fragrant🤤
I came here after searching for a local restaurant.
Two dishes cooked soft and slightly greasy...
If you sprinkle a little pepper on top, it will be spicy and clean.
Malaysian style bak kut teh. The soup stewed with Chinese medicinal ingredients was the best. Personally, I prefer Malaysian bak kut teh, so this is the best.
