Reviews of The Black Sheep Cafe
Really enjoyed the food :) i got the beef cheeks which were sooo tender!!! Really loved the texture of them. The sauce was also so tasty and went really well with the vegetables. 😊 The appetisers were really good too! The baked brie was both savoury and sweet and went well with the complimentary bread :) oysters were fresh and the accompanying condiments were also really well done. Cute place with friendly service and a nice ambience too, will be down to return!
Tender tender tender… everything was yummy and tender. Had the lamb shank and beef cheeks. Omg it was soooo good! The set $59++ was of great value. Food quality was yummy!
I loved my dessert. Wow! The Pandan soufflé and chocolate brownie thingy with salted caramel ice cream. Melts in your mouth.
We went on a Friday evening and it was rather quiet. Do support them as the food is really good and price is not exorbitant.
Only thing is, I hoped they gave free flow bread. Had to add $3.90 for an additional basket of bread. The bread and butter was yummy too…
Tried the roasted jowl, is tender but felt like eating roast pork at a expensive venue that’s all.
Pandan soufflé also a bit disappointing only can smell the pandan but not much taste.
Had a wonderful Sat lunch. Fois gras, duck confit and Tiramisu. Had eaten at Black Sheep before in Thomson. Glad to eat here again in the new place. Some photos of the food including my family members, some taken after starting to eat haha.
Lovely black/white exterior - continuing into the interior furnishing. Feels cool on a hot muggy day.
Kicked off with a coconut ice sorbet while waiting for my guest - texture was more ice cream than sorbet, the ice cool sensation was missing.
Base on our lovely server Kaylynn’s recommendations, we went with the dinner set choice.
My pan-fried foie gras was over-done, the surface was burnt. The brioche was hard as tack, what salvaged it was the little bit of crema balsamic & bits of salad. The baked brie in pistachio crust was slightly better, although it was slightly over-baked.
The beef cheek was good overall. The braised lamb shank was not as tender & too gamey. It was cooked well, meat did not fall off the bone & it tasted best with bits of gravy that was not redolent of red-wine & apricots.
The recommended pandan souffle was enjoyed by my guest, my flourless chocolate cake, Chocolate-Banana Budini had exactly one 1cm round slice of banana in it - definitely not my favourite.
Portions were generous, & our server was most attentive & topped our water regularly.
There was a large dinner party while we were there, service was handled well by the three staff.
Absolutely delightful find in the area that we stumbled upon - the setting is aesthetic and comfortable, food is great especially the PANDAN SOUFFLÉ WITH COCONUT ICE-CREAM HIGHLY RECOMMEND it's a great fusion creation by chef Ratha, the vanilla ice-cream is also one of the most legit I've had. Chef Ratha also readily made us a spiced tea not in the menu when we asked for it, served us even though they were actually already closed, and came out to chat with us. We came in for a quick tea break and ended up staying over 1.5hrs!
Followed The Black Sheep Cafe when they first started along Mayo Street, moved to Thomson V and presently along Norris Road.
Not much changes to the menu with a few additions of new dishes .
We had the 3 course set:
For appetiser ,we had Foie gras and baked brie cheese .Mains were the signature Duck confit and Wagyu beef cheeks . Ended the meal with a lovely Kahlua souffle and Chocolate banana Budino.
Chef Ratha enjoyed using fruits in his dishes so expect to find elements of fruits complementing the dishes.
A hidden gem within Little India , do give it a try and you will have surprises.
Hidden gem!! Cozy ambience and yummy food!! Highly recommend the baked brie, duck confit, spanish pork jowl and pandan scouffle. We could feel the effort put into the preparation of each meal!! Owner/chef is so friendly too :)
WOW location is a little wonky in the middle of little india for a classy french cafe but WOW THE FOOD IS QUITE BOMBZ????
The duck confit is damn frigging delish and the beef smth the beef roast beef borgeinoin??? Is damn bussin bussin ya maybe is a little pricy, the set is 59++ but tbh u know its good so its worth
10/10 comes must eat
Very nice dining experience. The roasted Spanish pork cheek on caramelised pears & tangerine chilli glaze, filet of sole meuniere on kale & tangy green starfruit beirre Blanc and the passion fruit coconut soufflé served with vanilla ice cream and coulis were excellent and highly recommended.
Food was amazing, but nothing could top the service. David was AMAZING and so friendly, super accommodating, and very helpful. Made our dining experience so much better. Highly recommend.
I was there for lunch and order lunch package of Crispy Duck Confit. The bread, the soup and the main course - the duck - were awesome. It was an enjoyable dining experince. I also had short chit chat with the owner/the chef, Ratha. Thank you for the superb dessert 😊
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here coz we just love the food by Chef Ratha. And we were not disappointed. Onion soup was flavourful! Beef cheeks melting in my mouth as I remembered it. Sea Bass crispy on outside and fluffy melt in your mouth on the inside. Baked Brie had a nice texture and matched well with the tangy pomelo. We ended off with something new for us in the menu - Pandan Soufflé. Heavenly light texture and fluffy. Tinge of gulamelak and Pandan flavour with vanilla was a perfect match. 💕💕💕 will be back ! Thank you Chef Ratha! 🙏😊
This quaint cafe is a rare and welcome sight in the heart of Little India. After eating all that spicy food, this would be a welcome change for the palette. Had pandan souffle, it's light and fluffy (perhaps way too fluffy that it no longer has enough bite and chew). Coffee is alright as well. Service is great.
3 course set is definitely bang for the buck! 2 of us had Escargot and Seared Foie Gras for starters. Then duck confit and sea bass for mains. Comes with desserts which we chose their pandan soufflé and tiramisu.
the duck confit was perfectly cooked. tender meat requires no knife to cut and was soft even in the middle which usually is dry in other restaurants. The seabass is also fresh.
The server was attentive yet not intrusive. kudos to the team at Black Sheep.
definitely will come back for to try their other dishes.
Excellent food and service. Special kudos to David for accommodating to our group and being so great with us. Huge compliments to the chef for the wonderful food.
We have been dining at Black Sheep from their days at Jalan Kelulut, happy to find out that Chef Ratha has re-opened at Norris Road.
We had the 3-course set lunch, every bite was exquisite.
Salad had delectable flavours mixed with pineapple, mango to give an exciting twist to each bite.
Not much more to be said about the main course except that it was as good as we remembered.
Don't leave without trying the flourless lava cake.
Nice restaurant in Little India. Beef cheeks are really good. Try the pandan souffle!
Staff recommended an escargot for sharing, and glad we ordered it! The bun came piping hot and we used it to soak up the herby goodness leftover after we finished the escargot 😋
Duck confit was crispy but not dry, and went well with the mango salsa. Madras chai that the staff recommended was good as well, spice taste is not as strong as the usual chai.
Though there was only 1 staff serving the customers, he was efficient and also attentive! 🙂
This cafe is a real hidden gem, serving up French cuisine at relatively affordable prices.
Our waiter was really helpful and attentive. He took the initiative to explain how the sets worked when he saw that we looked somewhat confused.
We started off with the escargots. I'm quite squemish and not very adventurous when it comes to food, so this was my first time consuming snails. I was pleasantly surprised by how flavourful the dish was.
We had the lamb shank and pork cheeks as mains. We loved how tender and juicy the lamb was. The pork cheeks were firm but not overly chewy.
Dessert was the chocolate boudini and it provided us with a satisfying end to the meal.
A small cosy place with warm and friendly service that serves one of the best duck confit in Singapore. The baked brie is another must try here. Am glad to find out in time to dine here as the place is closing down end of June.
Wish the chef owner success for his new endeavor!!
Thank you for the meal.
I ordered the tiramisu and coffee. It looks so pretty. I must say this tiramisu is definitely one of the best I’ve had. Ambience is great for a relaxing afternoon too
Ordered and sampled the 2-course meals, duck confit, beef cheeks, weekly seafood special, and fish and chip.
Food in general is on par with other restaurants. However, waiting time for the food was not justified. Waited close to an hour for the mains to be served and the dishes were not served to the table at the same time.
Customer service is good. The cafe was not that crowded and echoey, tables having their own conversations without talking over others.
Good food and ambience. Value for money. Pork cheek was tender and crispy, foie gras is really fragrant. The french onion soup has a rich bouillon, and authentic taste. The souffle is a must have. Service is excellent and attentive.
This is my first visit to The Black Sheep Cafe. It’s hidden at the basement of a small condo development.
Was looking for a place for a quick meal and decided to try the set lunch. I went for the mushroom soup and grilled Baramundi and was pleasantly surprised
The chef definitely put his heart into making this dish. The skin was pan friend to crispy perfection and laid on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes. Even the bread was warmed up and served with a slab of butter!
Excellent food with good service. It was a great find all thanks to shopback for the 1-1 deal. Will definitely come back even if there is no deal because their pricing for French food is quite reasonable. Not forgetting to mention, their pricing is without gst and service charge. Definitely a must try!
Celebrated Mother's Day at the Black Sheep Cafe. The food is truly 5stars and the ambience is super nice. Located at the basement of Thomson V, will need to take the escalator down from the entrance at level 1. The Chef is friendly and warm.
Every dish is so yummy. We have the mushroom soup with generous amount of mushroom. The bake brie may look so so, yet the taste is so unforgettable, make us wanna come back for more. My husband favourite dish is the Fish of the day, love the cream sauce and soft baked potatoes underneath it. My daughter favourite is the beef cheek that melts in the mouth and my favourite is Duck Confit, with mango sauce. The duck is crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. It is jus WoW!
I will highly recommend this place. And the best part, no gst
Truly enjoy!
I rarely leave reviews for restaurants/cafes that I go to, but this one really blew my mind. Went to black sheep to celebrate my mom's birthday.
Firstly, the food was exceptional. It did take quite a long time to arrive, but as they say, good things take time. And wow, it was definitely worth the wait. Their food was good, and definitely a notch higher than common restaurant standards.
The thing that really captivated me was their impressive service. The waitress that served us (didn't get her name) , was really detail oriented and went the extra mile to make sure that the entire experience was comfortable.
She constantly refilled our water, checked in on us to see if we needed anything, and went out of her way to plate the cakes when we requested for her to take them out of the fridge. This sort of service is really rare in Singapore, and I was really impressed by her.
All in all, I would give this place a solid rating. Thanks for the impressive service and wonderful experience 🥰
Was here in my 20s and still visiting in my 40s
Food is always top notch at affordable prices
Ambience is reminiscent of tea time in Paris.
Chef Ratha and team are always so pleasant and welcoming to all guests
10/10 would recommend! Excellent food done with passion and sincerity, coupled with a cosy ambience. Steak was done to perfection, and the souffle was amazing (-:
A very cosy and comfortable place. Had the 3-course set lunch and the food was delicious at an affordable price. The chef shared with his local version of fried prawn noodles and it was great.
Tried their 3 course dinner with desserts. Beef cheek is very tender and savior ok. Soup and Tiramisu are best match to the main dish. Add-on foie gras is also a hit and it melts in the mouth.
The food at this place is just excellent. We have the lamb rack and duck confit. It was great along with the dessert. We use fave for 50% during off peak to enjoy the great deal. Will come back for sure.
A friend bought me here for lunch. The set menu is value for money. For starter we had cream of mushroom soup was not the usual thick creamy ones. This has small pieces of carrots and celery together with the mushrooms. We ordered a duck confitt and the beef cheeks so we can do half & half to try. For dessert it's the souffle with maple syrup and a scoop of ice cream. So awesome. And we finished the meal with a cup of freshly brewed coffee. I highly recommend this place
great food n excellent services- we like the lamb shank and steak
Excellent soup, tender cheek;
Splendid dessert, perfect coffee to cap!
Thank you, Black Sheep!
nothing too impressive... tira misu appears to have been frozen and was otherwise a bit over the top on accoutrements... lamb shank good not great... french onion soup not salty at least but otherwise meh
Causal restaurant but the food is oh-so-fine! Buns were served warm, beef cheeks and lamb shank are so tender and flavourful. It’s really a gem in the neighbourhood!
Very nice place & Owner - recommend the Soufflee, great experience!
Nice intimate restaurant with excellent French food! Highly recommended! 5 stars!
Had a birthday celebration.
Food was excellent. Staff very friendly.
Great food, great ambience. Little gem hidden at Sin Ming Road near Upp Thomson Rd.
Must try is the Duck Confi. All their starters and desserts are delicious too.
Fantastic! Had the pork cheek, brie cheese and white wine pasta; all were yummily delicious and well done! Dig in half way before thinking of snapping photos! Owner was friendly too! Nice ambiance for private, couple and groups too.
I have been eating at this restaurant for years now, from before it moved from Thomson, and the food is as good as it has ever been. This restaurant is a must-try!
One of the best under-the-radar restaurants we have visited in Singapore. We had duck confit, beef cheeks and pandan souffle. All 3 dishes were done to perfection - the duck was crispy and succulent, mopped up its rosti, the beef cheeks were melt-in-your mouth delicious and pandan souffle was superb with a unique pandan fragrance.
All very affordable priced too, at under $30 for each mains.
Chef Ratha deserves kudos and a lot more recognition for his commitment to great European cuisine with a personaliaed touch. A must- visit!
It's a pub-like establishment located on a corner, so the people watching is great, and the beer cold, and the food typical of pub fare. The piped music, though, is a winner. The Black Sheep is a great little stop in the Arab quarter to cool off, have a bite to eat, and watch the world go by.
The Salmon, the truffle beef and the portobello starter was so good.A must try! Great service and great food. Suitable for special occasion dining. Affordable lunch sets too!
Super yummy bake Brie appetizer and truffle beef cheeks! Highly recommended!
Love the food there .
Always my preferred Restuarant after visited many other Resturant.
Service is good ,price is reasonable and the boss is friendly .
we paid about a hundred plus each as we had a bottle of wine. (2pax dine in)
Without it, costs per pax would have been lower. Overall pleasant meal and reasonably priced.
Must get the baked brie starter
Excellent food and desserts! Coffee was great! I WAS STUFFED!
This is the black sheep cafe which was from Thomson. Now nestle along the shophouses along Norris Road. You can identify it with its classier and cleaner look. The duck confit and pork cheek is mamamia. And dessert soufflé - pandan flavor w coconut gelato is IG cute-worthy. Super cosy setting. Assorted beer and wine at a good price too.
Ordered this double chocolate boudini. It is flavoursome, the chocolate is rich, well mixed with banana, strawberries and blue Berries.
Lunch time, we are a family of 5, ordered food with the chef taking order from us. We only found out he is the chef when we saw the photos while we were leaving. He has gauged correctly our appetite, so we have finished every bits of the food without feeling too full. Our family is ok with the dishes came one by one, since we prefer to taste and share every dish. It seems like there is only one waitress helping when we were there. It is a humble and close to heart french restaurant. Do support them before its gone. We overheard waitress told a senior couple to come more often before they close down.
Everyone of my family has their own favourite. Food are all good. We have ordered (best like on the left):
Starter: foia gras. Brie cheese
Main: Duck confit, lamb shank, Beef cheek, fish
Sweet: pandan soffle, lava cake, tiramisu.
I noticed the potatoes side dish are all very delicious be it mash potatoes, sliced potatoes or the rosti. The multigrain bun are very good too.
The food is amazing. I tonk that's more than enough reasons for the five stars....
Had been wanting to come for a long time and had the chance to go for lunch today. A nice surprise was a value set at $9.90 , creamy chicken stew served in a crossiant, what a steal! A raw but nice service style. I recommend coming here, will come again with my family.
Was rather disappointed with their 2-course set lunch option. It was supposed to be asparagus soup & tiramisu. Both were not available. Had to settle for mushroom soup which was so-so. The roast chicken was tender. Wait was rather long although there were only 3 tables. Waited 15 min fir bread to be served. Service was good. Nice young girl.
The lamb rack and pork cheek were particularly delicious. Service is a bit slow as we were quite a big group, but worth the wait. I had a wonderful time with my family and will definitely come back. This place is good value.
It's a vibey cafe with great desserts and service!
Amazing service level, unlike any other cafe.
Ordered a duck confit for a late lunch and it came nicely cooked with refreshing mango salad
Came for a dinner event. Friendly, cosy place. Delicious food, had pork and seafood. Enjoyed the hospitality. Worth revisiting.
Cosy restaurant with quality food. Duck confit crispy is especially worth mention. Crispy on the outside, tender and flavourful on the inside. Pandan and chocolate soufflé both outstanding. Worth seeking out and great for an intimate gathering of friends and family.
Fantastic quiet spot.
Good is good. Staffs are friendly. The cafe Atmosphere is very good. A good place to chill out with friends
The soufflé tastes good
The foie gras, onion soup, duck confit were excellent. I'm impartial to the escargots. End off with souffle of the day : Pandan with gula melaka sauce and coconut ice cream. It is worth the wait for the soufflé. A hidden gem in Upper Thomson area.
Panda Souffle is best 🌟
Very nice place with great food. Try the soufflé, it is awesome! 🤩
Nice crispy duck confit and great soufflé
Decent price too
My other half has always wanted to visit this place and finally we made it. I was skeptical at first as it’s tucked in a little corner. No regrets at all as the food and service here is wonderful. Will be back again!🥰
Awesome place tucked in the basement. Menu kept simple but every dish was done perfectly. Thumbs up!
Great food, lovely place, incredibly low price,Value for money. Will definitely be going back. Wonderful friendly atmosphere
