Reviews of THE NEIGHBOURWOK
Among wok hey noodles, I specially love the fried Hokkien prawn mee !!! Found a delicious one from The Neighbourwok in Bukit Batok. And guess what ?! They are selling satay also like chicken, pork, mutton, ketupat and tiger grilled prawns! Highly recommended. Very fresh and juicy. Overall was satisfied and tasty. 🤤
Over hyped and over rated. Wok hey - yes. “Lar pok” - generous. Fried noodles quality- acceptable. As fried noodles, good standard but I have trouble considering it “fried Hokkien noodles “! It lacks the prawn heads/stock umami. The base flavor here is soya sauce, abet good soya sauce. The sign says 20 - 30 mins wait. We waited 40-45mins. There seems to be take away fulfillment without Que tags.
I grew up with the legendary Rolex Kim’s Fried Hokkien noodles and Lor 29 Fried Hokkien noodles, these are the standard bearers.
Come here for good fried noodles but at 40 mins waiting time?
For a neighborhood hokkien mee the taste is decent but it lacks the wok hei. My only issue is i have to wait about 30 mins for the food to come. And the first bite i took, could feel there were alot of egg shells.
One of the best Hokkein Mee in SG!!! For only $5 I got my cravings satisfied! They really generous on their serving and ingredients! + their satay & grilled prawn is also flavorful! YOU SHOULD TRY & VISIT!! Will definitely go back again here with my friends!
Been patronising them since they were at the old location at Bukit Batok central(ish). Friendly owners very nice broth and generous serving size!! 5 pax eat 12 portions also not sian 🤪
Satays were also amazing finished everything before we could get a photo
Legitimately one of the best hokkien mee in the west. Highly recommend! Come visit. Shiok! So good we forgot to take photos before 😂
Love the wok hey! Wetness texture is just nice! Fried pork lard and chilli goes well together!!! Overall a nice plate of HKM in the west! Pls open an outlet in the east too!!!
Delicious! Really worth the calories! Wok hey flavour and tasty. Love it
Goes there around 11 am and no need wait for long … ordered 2 large portion for takeaway and taste delicious even after more than 1 hour .
Their hokkien mee is savoury with wok hei taste and portion was good. Bbq prawns were nice, flesh was easily taken off the shell. Thumbs up!
It was ok, expect a long wait, at least 20min. Hokkien mee is above average taste, with a strong wok hei. But ingredients were quite little, 2 prawns and maybe 3 slices of sotong for $5. Service was not the best as I was just awkwardly standing around waiting for my order to be taken for like 5min even though there wasn't anyone waiting in front of me, the people were just packing the noodles. Might go again if I'm in the vicinity, but will not purposely travel down.
"Wow! The presence of wok hei is evident from the first bite!" I told myself as I tasted their Hokkien Prawn Mee. In fact, some bits of noodle look lightly burnt (which I am ok with). My review of Neighbourwok thus started off on a happy note.
You see, Neighbourwok is oft mentioned as "the best Hokkien Prawn Mee in the West". Each time I see this, I mutter: "That's because you haven't tasted Mian Wang 1971's Hokkien Prawn Mee". (Reviewed)
But we are not here to take sides. All we want is good food. If Neighbourwok is indeed the best in the West, I'd be happy to have found it.
There are a number of good things present here: chilli is potent, prawns are fresh and succulent, fried pork lard came in small bits and was easily stirred into the noodles so that the flavour and aroma is more or less evenly spread out. I can see why their Hokkien Prawn Mee is highly regarded.
But.... I felt there was something lacking. The broth, which made this dish the wet version, did not have the same umami punch as others do. Perhaps because the strong wok hei overpowered the subtler flavours that might have been present in the broth.
The coffee shop was renovated not too long ago. However, I found this one of the most unpleasant/chaotic places to eat. Their concept seems to be to cram as many stalls in the coffee shop as possible, and cram as many seats as possible to maximise revenue generation. I felt the coffee shop was too warm and too humid for comfort, making me want to hurry through my lunch and leave as soon as possible. I might even say that it would discourage me from revisiting. Yes, there were ceiling fans, but these seemed to only blow back the hot air at me rather than to dispel hot air to cool down the place.
I felt very thirsty after eating. Not sure whether it was due to MSG or the coffee shop being too warm.
5 star review from me as I can safely say this is one of the best in the west. Had their hkm and satay a couple of times and would definitely find it worth the 20-30mins wait during peak hour. Chilli has a kick and stock has ton of umami. This hkm stall definitely warrants a higher rating than the current 3.8stars. Would advise people who wrote the 1 star reviews to go down to the store to have it instead as the wait will be shorter to avoid destroying their ratings on google review. And honest to god, good hkm in the west is so hard to find especially one run by millennials. They deserve alot more credit than the current google rating. This is a stall to treasure and protect to ensure our heritage is being preserved.
Wow wow wow … I have been going to this place for months. The Neighbourwork's Hokkien Noodles consistently deliver a heavenly taste and texture that keeps you returning for more. Yummy!! Richly infused with a savoury broth, each balanced scoop yields a subtle seafood hint. Each $6 served with yellow and white noodles, pork belly, sotong, prawns, and you can request for more pork lard, every well-cooked bite bursts with an umami flavour that is out of this world. This is simply the BEST HOKKIEN MEE in SG.
Damage: $6 - worth every bit of it
Return Factor: Definitely! I have been back every other week for the past few months.
Cosy kopitiam, the HK mee is best I tried. Chilli is spicy and fragrant, the mee is on the wet type. Pork lard is crispy. The system is simple, queue, get the buzzer and collect when ready. Tried 2x times and both time is good and delicious.
One of the best hkm I have eaten in my life. The noodles were delivered hot,and I can taste that the broth is sweet and unami. Prawns were juicy and nice, no alkaline taste on noodles, and there is a light wok hey smell that I like. I thought it would only taste good when freshly eaten but it even tastes good overnight. Not to mention that the chili is yummy and goes well with the noodles as well though tad spicy. Have ordered for next month delivery, already looking forward. The portion is very big and is twice the size expected. Very value for money. Highly recommended.
The neighbourwok has recently relocated to new stall at Bukit Batok Blk 177. Made a trip to try out their signature Hokkien mee. However, I felt the wok hei was not so WoW as compared from what I tasted at previous stall. May be due to different wok different fire. Overall still a decent above average type of Hokkien Mee that I like. Their satay were delicious as well.
Hokkien mee itself was pretty good, I like mine with more moisture and this was great. Sambal pairs well with the mee.
The ordering experience was sub-par though. I was next in line waiting to order but cashier kept telling me to wait, even though he was doing nothing except to wait for the chef to finish cooking the batch so he can help pack. I didn’t really understand the workflow.
Simply love the hokkien prawn noodles.
*Update@05 Apr 2024:- Made my order, waited in the queue only to find out that the ones behind me got their orders first. Long story short, they said my order was lost.
Legit good Hokkien mee! It’s the wet kind with a nice amount of wok hey. If you are particular about the white noodle to yellow noodle, this really hits the spot. The owners are also super friendly and welcoming. Must try!
Best Hokkien Mee in my opinion! Standard of food has always been top notch every time I visit! Prawn is huge and fresh. Best combo is to order everything when you’re there!
The wait was very long and the stall was blasting music, making the whole coffeeshop noisy. There is tiny bits of roasted pork with a little squid slices and thick gravy. 3 prawns for $6 portion.
Creamy wet Hokkien mee with strong fragrant wok hei, fresh pork lard. However, sorely missing the prawn taste and beansprout, which is a pity. If they use stronger prawn stock, would have been better.
For a hawker stall, the food surpasses expectations, and they made efforts to bundle their food items for all to try different things. They cook their food in batches so you may have to wait a little
No frills, nothing to complain and no harm giving it a try if you’re contemplating.
Located in a quiet coffee shop and quiet neighborhood. The plate of hokkien mee is anything but average. Be prepared to queue during peak hours. Manned by young hawker with excellent skill to whip up a traditional hokkien mee. Flavor is on point. Only imperfection was the lack of wok hei. Otherwise, it will be a 5 star dish.
2nd visit. Noodle had wok hei now but too much yellow noodle and resulted in bitter taste. Only if eaten with the chili can cover up the taste.
The Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee is good 👍. Worth the trip. However, the pork satay although tastes good, it's too skinny.
Umami-porky gravy with generous portions. Highly recommended!
Ordered the medium plate which costs $6. Long queue, alot of neighbours love this hokkien mee indeed. Alot bought satay as well. Honestly, the dish is nothing to rave about. But kudos to them for making the hokkien mee full of wok hei in every bite while retaining some gravy in it. The ingredients are really very little for a medium portion and the chilli is the sourish type. I would have given a lower rating if the noodles is not a wok hei bomb. Hopefully they will give more ingredients in the future.
I LOVE Fried Hokkien Mee. When my colleague told me that a new stall selling Hokkien Mee open up and was good, I HAD to check it out.
So I did. It was named The Neighbour Wok. Hokkien Mee and Satay. I, of course, ordered Hokkien Mee. Large.
How was it? Delicious, moist, with the depth of fragrance of the slight gravy that gives a succulent whiff of prawn stock. The Large had 4 good-sized prawns with pork and a few pieces of squid. The presentation was pleasant, the prawns and pork were placed on the top.
Would I be back? I have! And with friends, for more!
Good to have delectable food around the Bt Batok Swimming pool area!
First time trying, overall the hokkien mee taste is ok. Personally, I find it too salty, and the chili is not spicy enough.
Tried many hokkien mee around Singapore. Confirm this is one of the best. Hope subsequent visit, the food will remain consistent. SHIOK. Trust me it's good. Waiting time 30 mins but they've been fast in serving out.
Packed Hokkien mee earlier from this place. The noodles are not too salty. And the lard is included separately instead of fried together. The chilli blends well with it. Flavour wise, I’ve sampled better ones. But it’s good in this part of the region. The satay is sub-par. 10min drive home; and the meat is room temperature. Flavour wise, it’s decent.
Ordered small $4 and big hokkien mee $5. And also the 10 chicken satay $7, pork $7, mutton $8, and 2 ketupat $1.60.
Hokkien mee is good, taste even better with the sambal, gives it this tangy taste which I like. The satay is also good, nicely marinated, not too dry and charred.
However the portion is slightly lesser as compared to the other stalls. Overall quite good, would recommend if you're in the area!
Wet version with wok hei.. gravy was just nice not too prawn taste.! With the sour chilli, it taste gd for a Kopitiam standard. Satay only starts at 4pm. Pic shown is large size $6, small is $4.50 now.
Nice hokkien mee if you like it wet. Think the pork lard can be improve further as it not crunchy enough. Other than hokkien mee, they also sell satay however I think the satay is too hard for my liking.
Full of wok hei aroma, flavorful gravy and full of crispy pork lards, complement with good chilli. If add in a bit more squids, will be better. I must admit that this is the best Hokkien mee I have eaten so far.
For $4 a plate the portion is very generous. People who like their hokkien mee wet will appreciate it. Noodle were gooey and wet to my liking.
The smokey charred flavor in my opinion overpowers the broth and lack thus seemingly lacks the umami prawn punch. Perhaps I personally prefer a touch more fish sauce.
The chili packs a punch.
Good but not in my top 10 list of Hokkien mee in Singapore.
So far so good, can't say it is the best. But definitely above average. There are many good brands to eat, and I will try other stalls next round.
Used to be so much worth eating when they just started at their old location nearby Bukit Batok swimming pool. Prices has gone up a couple of times since but portion has also reduce and the ingredients outright pathetic, saving grace was that the wok-hei and flavour still very much intact.
Far from being the best HKM in the west side as many had claimed, maybe just the best in Bukit Batok.
Queued for 30 mins on a Friday night. Not much difference between 4 dollar portion and 5 dollar portion. Creamy hokkien noodles.
Wok hei hokkien mee($4.50)
Strong wok hei flavour. Stock used was great.
Need to wait quite a while.
Gravy wet style. Got chive, egg, prawn, sotong, pork belly and pork lard.
Chilli spicy and shiok.
Nicely cooked with crunchy pork lard. Young chap at the Helm. Dose of Chilli goes well with the wet type noodles.
Arrived at 6pm, Total waiting time 1h (queue and get food). Decent portion, standard not consistent. Would recommend to come when off peak.
The hokkien mee and satay is good here. Didn’t try other stores.
Went there for lunch and dinner on a few occasions. Felt that lunch was better mostly.
Legit HKM with powerful chilli.. Lots of tasty pork belly strips... no sotong... Perhaps a tad too sweet/salty... But overall tasty. 4 stars.
Not too bad tasting but waiting time is unacceptable. Took 30min of waiting time and we were the first few in line upon the opening of the shop.
Given it 4 stars. Relative to other stalls, this one has a good flavor of wokhei and taste.
Very long hours waiting finally tasted….find a bit too sweet on overall taste nothing special. Ok to eat but not worst for long hour wait. Saw from TikTok adv …. Another can not be trust 😅
I thought it was overall average tasting. Ingredients are rather generous. But flavour wasn’t intense.
The noodles are perfectly flavorful and satisfyingly authentic!
Best Hokkien Mee that I’ve ever had. The pork lard is crispy and yummy. The noodles were simply AMAZING! Finished the plate clean and will definitely come back many more times.
Hokkien mee is the more soupy kind, I like hahaha, fam eat this like once every week or sth oops. Very popular stall, usually we go at 11.30 to prevent long waiting times
Anw one of the best in the area, although price has increased recently but wells it's still worth it
Awesome and really tasty. Die die must try!
The portion of Hokkien Mee Zhong ($6) is very generous, the sauce is very rich and penetrates into the noodles, the chili sauce is full of spiciness and delicious. Although it takes a long time to wait, I will come again!
Really delicious👍🏻
Hokkien fried prawn noodles best in Bukit Batok. Can challenge toa payoh .
I recently visited the Neighbourwok in BB and was surprised with their HKM with strong flavour, wokhey taste and chili was incredibly shiok!
Portion is generous and dun forget their satay!
Will definitely return back for their HKM again
Every element of the dish comes together to create an unforgettable experience. The rich broth is the star of the show, thick and deeply flavorful, with a savory umami depth that can only come from hours of simmering pork bones and seafood. It infuses the noodles with a luscious, silky texture, making each bite a comforting indulgence.
The noodles themselves are perfectly cooked, with a satisfying al dente bite that adds a pleasant chewiness, allowing them to hold up to the rich sauce without becoming soggy. The crispy pork lard scattered throughout the dish is a delightful touch—it adds an addictive crunch and a fragrant, savory richness that elevates the entire bowl. It’s clear that the stall takes great care in rendering the lard to achieve that perfect crispiness.
For those who enjoy a bit of spice, the addition of a fiery, aromatic sambal chili brings a zesty kick that cuts through the richness of the dish and adds layers of complexity. The balance of flavors here—sweet, salty, spicy, and umami—is nothing short of perfection.
Overall, this Hokkien mee is a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, with a comforting broth, expertly cooked noodles, and the perfect crunch from the pork lard. It’s a must-try for anyone looking for an authentic, satisfying bowl of Hokkien mee.
Love the prawn mee, even if is takeaway it tastes so good as well!
Best HKM in the west!
