Reviews of Xi An Impressions
Desperate and hungry from wandering through a mall, I ambled equally aimlessly into an unassuming little Chinese eatery, one among the thousands that seem to have invaded our local food scene. The sturdy, heavy-set chairs seemed a mismatch for the practical lightweight tables. Apart from the food that was prepared by the kitchen staff - even the manager took payment in between his cooking duties - you served yourself by collecting your food from the counter and chilled drinks from the fridge.
So imagine my surprise when I tucked into my first item: the unique Xi’an biang biang noodles - and the noodle is as complicated to prepare as the Chinese character suggests (see photo). One impossibly long, flat, unbroken noodle, made chewy and unctuous by tedious kneading and slapping rice and wheat flour, lay quietly beneath other textures in the meat, vegetable and condiments in a tasty marinade. One needs patience to get through this but what a fulfilling experience to the senses and the perfect main for a hungry appetite.
Just as satisfying was yet another Xi’an showstopper, their beef burger called 肉夾饃. The crusty, flaky bun sandwiched properly braised beef brisket, cooked just so that everything was tender and succulent enough but still retained the distinct textures of flesh, fat and fascial membrane, richly scented with remarkably well-balanced mix of warm spices.
Their trademark 涼皮 was a seasoned tossing of cold flat noodles and shredded salad greens. From the very first mouthful, it stood out for its bright, bold personality, delivering the mildly floral, numbing effect of Szechuan peppercorns with unexpectedly bright refreshment.
While the or signatures tended to be spicy (and a tad salty and oily, perhaps a nod to their authenticity), their dumplings were more considerately seasoned. Both the Cantonese-style wanton soup (餛飩湯) and steamed cabbage and pork dumplings (白菜豬肉餃子) were tasty with umami, although I preferred the wonton with its thinner skin. They also have a fair selection of other meat and vegetable dishes, include grilled skewers, which I didn’t try since I wasn’t ordering rice. If the spice was all too much, I suggest a can or two of their canned hawthorn drink. Tangy and soothing, its clear, clean, sweet fruitiness was the perfect palate cleanser.
In all, the mains were priced below $10 while the sides hovered around $5. The sets represent value for money and having a party of 3-4 immediately improves variety in your meal for your budget. I shall certainly be back with a few friends to try out other items on the menu and make good my short escape with Xi’an street food if I ever felt a craving again.
2nd time here. We like the food. Prices are reasonable. Must try meat skewers - $6 for 5, dumplings soup was nice too, only $5 for 10 dumplings. We ordered meal set 1 $12 (small bowl of noodles, 2 x half piece of roujiamo and a can drink.
Big portion of noodles
Was good and delicious flavours( not too salty or spicy with chilly added too, those spicy lovers can add more if want)
Meat in the noodle can be changed with additional cost, default is with pork.
Beef skewers was tasty too.
Also must try their cold dishes.
Ordered biangbiang noodles and cold dish of chicken. Average, pleasant and accommodating people who are able to adjust level of spiciness. Place is always packed during lunch. Affordable priced.
The Chinese hamburger (肉夹馍) is the one with softer buns (not pastry like) and mince meat. Flavourful and savoury.
The 凉皮is also nice. Noodles are well made and the sauce adds a kick to the taste. The mushrooms are also delicious.
Gigantic bowl of Biang Biang, with its thick Q-Q noodle, is a real treat that really fills you up. The crispy skin pulled meat burger is also a must-try item. Even the Shui Jiao, which is amply packed with meat fillings, is great value.
The bowl of noodles is huge!
Handmade noodles and dumplings are appreciated. Springy and yummy.
Just wished they had ginger to go with the dumplings.
Liked the biang biang noodles and the meat skewers! Generous portions for the price.
Biang biang noodles and dumplings were yummy though I wish the portion of the noodles was slightly bigger. You can skip the free ‘soup’ though, it was basically hot water 😂
Delicious bowl of noodles that was hand pulled from scratch, though the ingredients were not a lot
I like this place because their biang biang noodle is very good!! It’s so chewy and they are generous with the ingredients!
Very delicious. My favourite ones are Biangbiang noodle and Classic Laotongguan Pork Pie
Pretty okay food, but nothing spectacular.
Nice environment nice food and services! The best Xi’An Cuisine in town.
One of the most frequent place when craving for biang biang mian
It’s so delicious. I tasted the taste of my hometown. I’ll come back next time.
Very good Xi'an flavor, but there are a lot of flies. Roadside shop on the first floor
