Reviews of Hvala 111 Somerset
Nice Zen atmosphere, open seating concept with a stepped area that looks nice for photos but not really comfy. Slightly noisy and my large group probably contributed much lol...
Anyway the key attraction is the food and the ice creams and drinks did not disappoint. Macha flavors were on point, the black sesame goma was also not bad.
Overall great place, recommended!
Ambient: nice
Drinks: nice
Food: yummy
Service: okay
Price: on the high side
Sofa: dirty looking stains. Not inviting
Ordering: With so many choices, it is better to allow customers self-order via scan and place order using mobile phones, than queue up and wait for their turn.
Shocker: two baby cockroaches running around! 😱 hygiene issue.
May not come back again.
🟨 Went to Hvala Cafe at 111 Somerset Road ( Triple One Somerset Mall) and I had the prettiest and most delicious Ispahan Parfait.
🍉 The vegan parfait consists of a dollop of Watermelon cum Lychee sorbet, surrounded by a circle of watermelon cubes.
💜Beneath the sorbet is freshly whipped cream & granola bits. ● Service is very friendly and hospitable.
🍓I was guided very kindly by Mr Joseph, the manager, who helped me pick a choice of dessert. The ambience in the Japanese -inspired cafe is calm and soothing.
🟧 I was so very happy enjoying my awesome parfait. I will come back again and I highly recommend this amazing and beautiful cafe to anyone.
🖤 from Customer Florence Leow.
ordered a matcha drink. taste like grass. could be sweeter. the waffle ice cream is not bad . taste quite nice. yuzu chrysanthemum is a 4/5.
The first time I tried the Hvala iced matcha latte was at the Chijmes store, and I liked it. I came back to try their hojicha latte, and it didn’t disappoint. It was typically to my liking, strong and thick compared to the matcha/hojicha lattes at most other cafes in Sg.
Also tried the matcha and yuzu sliced cakes, both were delicious. However, if you don’t like sour flavors, I think you might not enjoy the yuzu cake.
I’ll come back to try other varieties of drinks and desserts.
Had the best matcha latte and waffle in Singapore. The waffle was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, complemented with the Hokkaido milk ice cream. I would come here again, especially with the great customer service
Finally got to try out the stuff at Hvala. Was always attracted by the Aesthetics at the Somerset outlet. From the outside, it evokes such a Zen vibes. But alas, all expectations of feeling Zen is lost after you step in to the crowded & popular shop as the noise of chatter became so apparent. Although we were attracted by the ice-cream flavours & ordered a waffle with the ice-cream, it was the Tiramisu that was a winner for us in the end. The matcha latte I had was just average.
Spacious and inviting cafe for small gatherings or even alone. Superb matcha 🍵 selection though a little expensive. This outlet is a bit more spacious than the takashimaya outlet
Arrived after 6 pm on Saturday. No problem finding a seat. Ordered at the machine. Matcha served to my table within a few minutes. Ceremonial grade matcha is very thick and tastes like what I ordered in Japan.
Tl:dr i really like everything that i ordered
I came to this place on a saturday. Got myself the hojicha goma latte as well as the goma parfait.
Self promo section: The hojicha goma latte was used as a guess the drink section on my twitter, for people to guess the drink and earn a small prize (end)
I like both the parfait and the drink. Sadly, my mum saw my post and gave MANY HINTS comments, “wa your photo very nice ah” “wa i wish i can go“ “eh tomorrow i not working, you want to bring me out anot” “that ice cream very nice right”
So i came back on sunday, but the goma parfait was out of stock. So my mum got the waffle instead, with goma and honeydew sherbet. I got myself a matcha dessert.
Hope you guys enjoy my story and rating (and my photos too)
Matcha was amazing!! Not too thick. Got mine with soy milk (free alternative) and no sugar. Though, I would’ve liked more ice in mine.
The matcha affogato wasn’t my favourite and the only reason this isn’t a 5-star. Didn’t blend well for me.
Goma matcha latte was a disappointment. Not sweet at all, and drink tastes burnt. Honey Earl Grey cake tasted great but texture was dry. Service staff had a black face. Location was great, full length glass on 3 sides, ample sunlight, air con was comfortable temp, not too cold or hot. Not noisy too, think the high ceiling and furnishings around the space helped. Great place to chill but in comparison to chjimes outlet, drink was a total miss. Too bad the main entrance is sealed, it would have been nicer entering there than from the side which was cramped.
Usually here on weekdays but swung by on a Saturday afternoon for the first time in a long while since CB started. Given the ongoing social distancing measures, seats are even more limited than before so please be prepared to queue at the entrance when it's full house. It gets really noisy when that happens so I do miss the quiet vibe on less crowded days. And I couldn't help but feel rushed to finish my stuff with keen eyes from the queue starring inside. It's definitely good for the business to see crowds but I think I will avoid coming again on weekends.
Had the chafogatto with a level 3 matcha ice cream and espresso shot of matcha. Not recommended unless you like the intense bitterness of matcha. A great booster to my mood though - somehow, it has a calming effect as well.
The matcha mont blanc now comes in a triangular shape as compared to its previous round version. Taste is as good as before but can't help but feel that the size seems to have gotten smaller.
And rounding it up with the matcha and houjicha latte which is still good. Liked the toasty aroma of the houjicha which goes well with the matcha.
Hana Matcha latte (the most expensive one but it is worth) is very impressing taste. Smooth and rich of green tea taste.
Yuki matcha (not latte) is also good taste
All bakery i tired are good, strong tea and roasted sesame taste.
Would come back to drink Hana Matcha Latte again.
A nice place to visit that was recommended by a friend. Matcha heaven but due to the heat I chose yo have something more refreshing.
They have all sorts of different types of Seating including sitting on the floor.
Not many vegan options for desserts.
Best goma cake ever! I always come back for their goma cake: soft, fluffy, not too sweet and the black sesame taste is authentic.
Tried their hot matcha hojicha latte (less hojicha syrup) and it’s still quite sweet. Yet the matcha is strong, and the combination on a rainy day is so soothing.
Love the aesthetic of 111Somerset outlet, such a calming space to catch up with friends. (P.s.: they serve free water, honestly great that they wanna keep us hydrated!)
Plenty of natural light here that I really love! Also, the entire place gives off a very casual and relaxed ambiance, which will definitely allow you to settle in and wind down! There's a corner where you can sit on tatami mats (without shoes) as well to enjoy your matcha and desserts! Was recommended the matcha drink and got it in hot and cold (picture) with less sugar and it was yummy! Sweet potato cake was really good and sweet potatoes were very sweet! The truffle chocolate was really dense and great for chocolate lovers! Overall, would come back again for this great ambiance and food!
Nice place. It was the only shop that was crowded at 111 Somerset on a weekday night. Queue was orderly, we ordered from the machine, paid and then a table was reserved for us. They close early but at least half an hour is enough for deserts here. We liked the green tea based desserts but the earl grey honey cake was passable. Drinks were made of authentic matcha and hojicha, note that the stick provided is a chopstick and not a straw to drink from.
The Goma ice cream is too sweet for my liking. The matcha ice cream tastes pretty good with strong matcha flavours. The shop interior is nice and comfortable. We were given a dine in time limit of 1 hour due to the crowd. However, the service was really quick so it wasn’t an issue.
Very well decorated and patronized green tea matcha tea shop around Somerset. They're unique in the level of zen they provide, and the price points are not exorbitant.
Go for the Matcha Hojicha Ice Blended if you're unsure of what you want - that is my tried and tested option for you to test, and give me a thumbs up if you like it!
7/10 for Matcha Mont Blanc, interesting as I thought it would be a tart base. Sponge cake is nice.
Decent portion and size @$9.9 before gst and service charge.
Had to order& pay at counter, but charged with service fee. Staff did not even offer water.
Was here in the afternoon 3pm on a Tuesday, not much crowd but the echo of the noise a negative part for making this a chillax place.
Still neat and clean like the last time I came which is before covid.
Walked into cafe at quiet corner of Triple1 Somerset, discovered an awesome authentic Japanese matcha cafe with bustling queues. Not for everyone due to its intense strong & unsugared matcha flavours, but perfect for me. We had the strongest matcha ice cream with matcha lattes, the rich matcha blends perfectly with the milk. Used to be a small kiosk at 313 Somerset but I’m glad they got their proper cafe, with a myriad of traditional and modern seatings! The drinks are not sweetened hence you can taste the true matcha flavours delightfully serenading your taste buds. A must try for matcha lovers! :)
Had to queue for around 15mins to get in on a Saturday afternoon 4pm+. Vibes is quite nice with plenty of daylight and japanese-style interior decor.
The hojicha ice blended is so sweet even with less sugar. Didn't really enjoy the drinks. Drinks are too pricy and can't really taste the premium tea they are using when it's overpowered by sugar. (And the single chopstick as a stirrer in the drink is kinda weird and bad omen lol)
The waffle with ice cream is really nice. Crispy and slightly chewy. I'd order the waffle again.
Oh and please don't sit at the staircase area cos it's really difficult to consume food there. Look nice for pics but not functional. I'd rather wait longer for a proper table and chair.
Enjoyed hvala. Good Japanese themed cafe which an attention to details for the tea prepared. Enjoyed the waffle with ice cream which was delicious. The wait is long though and queued for over 40 mins before I could get a table. Worth visiting so come during off peak hours like week day during the off lunch and off dinner timing.
Located at 111 Somerset, by the roadside, just 100m-200m from 313 somerset.
Minimalist decoration and pretty spacious. Not crowded even during lunch hour, price is at the high side and a very small cup of matcha cost $10.80 before tax. Knowledge of staffs regarding the different of matcha serving may need to improve.
Instagramable place but may not consider to return for pricey but so so matcha drink. Cake doesn’t look attractive either.
LOVE this hvala outlet the most! Least crowded, most comfy, and tons of natural lighting 🤩! The matcha and hojicha latte are both delicious, and especially awesomeeeee with oat milk!!! 😋😍
The yummiest thing here has to be the BLACK SESAME CAKE!!!! It’s literally baked so perfectly, from texture to taste to appearance, everything is just 💯🤤. Gosh I can literally gobble down another five slices of this at one go. MEGA LOVEEEEE!!!! 😍😍😍🫶🌟
Good matcha. Kinda wished they went a few steps further and turned this new cafe into an escape. Instead, it just feels like a lesser version of the main store.
It’s becoming my fav hangout for dates. Although there’s a limited dine in of 1h, we are allright with it as we usually come at 8pm+ and stay till 9pm before going off. Understandable there’s limited time for dining in due to its popularity and long queues sometime.
Food: Loved the matcha and hojicha drinks. Great chill drinks after a long hot day!
Came on a weekday afternoon. Not much people at that time. They do inform you in advance that there is a one-hour time limit.
Better to get a seat first then place your order at the kiosk.
They have a range of tarts, gelatos and “Petits”. The Hojicha Petit > Matcha imo
Service is friendly and quite efficient. Very calm atmosphere in this cafe! Good to relax
The desserts were not bad, I felt like something was missing.. but overall if you love matcha, this place is worth a visit.
A very chill place to have a drink, have some desert and chit chat. It is generally not crowded and not noisy too. Love the black sesame ice cream (don’t think it’s the exact name) and my matcha drink (don’t remember the name too. Love the design of the place, would come again if is around the area.
Sakura pudding is limited time only, moose was very light, slightly salty n sweet. Hojicha thick n satisfying.
2’ Matcha ice-cream is just nice for my tastebuds - not too creamy nor too bitter (because of the matcha). The mixed matcha & hojicha latte (hot and cold) were nice too. We were sitting at the Zabuton by the window. It was nice:)
I always see long queues outside Hvala during my previous visits to 111 Somerset. Finally get to try it yesterday. V nice, zen, minimalist environment. Ordered the matcha hojicha latte, Matcha Petit Gâteau and Yuki matcha. The drinks have thick matcha taste but its a little too bitter for my liking. Perhaps this is the authentic way of making matcha, way too healthy for me. I somehow prefer sweeter drinks. Cake is good. I must say i prefer maccha house in orchard central - More interesting dessert choices.
Nice quiet spacious cafe with crate, benches and sofa seats. Sells specialty tea, some limited offering. The mochi waffle and ice cream is a must.
Will definitely recommend this place if you're an avid fan of Matcha. You'll be blown away by the variety of Matcha drinks and tea. The Matcha Latte with Black Sesame is wholly good. Love the vibe and is a great place to reminisce with friends.
(12 Dec 2022)
I’ve only tried their iced matcha houjicha latte and it’s really thick and of good quality ($5.80 takeaway, $6.40 dine in) It’s not too sweet as well but I do still ask for less sugar. I love the interior decor of both their outlet in Chijmes and here. It’s zen and chill, although the tables are not great for doing serious work, the setting is still great for chilling and meeting people. Service staff were friendly, nothing to fault. At least there’s wifi in this outlet! There’s a tax for those who choose to sit in so do take note.
Not sure if I don't know how to taste matcha related food items or I just find that it's meh, nothing very special about the matcha ice cream or their tea. The tea taste a little too bitter for my liking. Everything is very fancy ig worthy though and it's a little steep in price.
It was pleasant to be seated at a Zashiki sitting arrangement and by the window. We ordered a mixed of Matcha-Hojicha latte (hot and cold) and 2’ matcha ice-cream. My friend unfortunately spilled her matcha due to the anti-slipped table properties. The staff cleaned it up quickly. We decided not to order another cup of latte.
Great place for some freshly brewed tea, and dairy-free desserts! The vegan "custard" danish kills it.
Would be nice to see some fermented tea options in the drinks menu. Increasing the amount of tea served - while might come with some logistic difficulties - would improve the overall experience as well.
Nice tea place to chill at. The matcha latte was yummy and not overly sweetened. The cold brew was not worth it. The dessert was alright, a bit on the sweeter side. $26 for 2 drinks and a dessert.
Very zen ambience, though can be noisy when it’s full. Their matcha hojicha latte is really nice. The Goma cake slice is really to die for, soft sponge and light cream, with strong black sesame taste. It’s a must try when there.
Hot macha is good but regret ordering choco oat with it. The matcha completely overwhelmed the chocolate and oat. Waffles and ice cream are nice but the waffles become soggy after a while when the ice-cream melted. Good place to spend the afternoon but there is time limit of 1 hour.
This is my 2nd visit and the matcha ice blended here are to-die-for. The desserts (waffle with icecream, ice-blended) are delicious and rich in taste and we are satisfied with the experience.
Update: my third visits came on December 2024 and this place still satisfy my taste buds.
The staffs are very efficient, and lovely persons. We had a small chat and it was wonderful.
Not as nice as the Chijmes flagship outlet. Couches need to be cleaned. Otherwise a good escape from the crowds at Orchard serving a solid matcha menu.
Option of change to vegan drinks. Pricy considering the hot drinks portion. Would be nice to offer warmer drink and less foamy. 🍰 is nice.
This visit reminded me why I love Hvala even if it's super pricey. The brioche bun with red bean and ice cream is simple, but came in a substantial portion. All elements were delish and the combination just works. Tried their hojicha latte this time, it's just as good as the matcha latte.
A popular joint in town, just a stone’s throwaway from Somerset MRT. Very nice ambience with quality Matcha tea and cakes. Nice place for (speedy) dates and hang outs, though every table is limited to an hour.
Have been a regular for hvala matcha and hojicha ice blend, first time trying genmaicha ice blend, really love the taste. The toasty and roasted rice added, really enhanced the taste and aroma of the matcha drink, every slip there some fragrant crispy rice to chew on.
I liked the Sobacha gelato more than the vegan waffle under it.
This place plays Studio Ghibli jazz music, which is a plus in my book.
Came with a really close friend of mine who loves matcha as much as I do. We ordered the Matcha Latte and larva cake with ice cream.
Would definitely recommend to our family and friends.
Still one the BEST Cafe in SG 🤗
Hojicha with GOMA Syrup ( hot ) not bad, perhaps next time can try the cold one ;
Lychee Rose Cake above average - if bolder floavour then even better 😋
My favourite matcha latte in Singapore. Super rich and unami. The place was pretty quiet on a Wednesday afternoon and service was pretty fast. They have almond milk option for people who are lactose intolerant.
We went to Hvala Somerset for the 1st time to try the cafe and was so impressed with the service. Special shout out to Kelvin Tay for managing the queue and for his very peasant demeanour. Love the cakes and ice cream and cafe was very clean and has a nice vibe to it. Will definitely be back!
Nice vegan desserts. Acoustics might not be there and a tad overpriced.
Authentic matcha 🍵 goodness, great to drop by for the zen feel of Japan. Will be back to try other concoctions. Too bad they only limit 1hr due to seat constraints.
Verdict :
Service - 3/5
Taste - 4/5
Decor - 5/5
I came by on a Sunday at about 12, and there were only two tables occupied. There's a self-service kiosk where you can order the items. I like how there's such a variety of beverage and cake options. Before being seated, you are reminded that you can only stay for 1 hour.
I had the Sweet Potato Cake ($8.80) which had cubes of sweet potato interspersed between layers of sponge cake. I actually enjoyed the sponge cake as it had a lot of flavour that contrasted with the sweet potatoes, but I could not figure out the taste.
I also had the Kaze ceremonial grade matcha ($8.80), which was full of umami, and only a slight bitter aftertaste.
Matcha lover favourite location. They have the best matcha cake and beverages
been visiting this outlet a couple times now and i must say i quite enjoy the ambience and seating layout. comfortable space w friendly service. dining was however limit to 60mins.
Love the ice brew tea, it was refreshing.
The ice matcha latte was so so, prefer stronger. The hojicha cake was dry and too many creams. The hojicha sauce was not properly diluted, we tasted a sandy texture.
Delicious drinks on a Sunday afternoon. I definitely prefer this branch to that at CHIJMES, which has a very messy layout and poor crowd control. This branch has spacious and comfortable seating, and each drink is prepared with greater care and attention!
Delicious Matcha Mont Blanc, Sweet Potato ice cream & Apple Mont Blanc cake!
Great service, great Matcha and great selection of pastries and drinks. Most importantly, comes with dairy-free options as well as oat-milk options which was quite a life saver! Thank you
Super crowded but yumzers houjicha is mid just get matcha
Waffles and ice cream is yummy! Cafe decor is nice too. Visited on a weekday night and it’s not too crowded. Great place to hang out after dinner for dessert in town
Easy to order, and food / drinks are on point.
Especially love the ambience, the amount of space and the hojicha latte.
This is a peaceful place in the city to enjoy and take it slow for abit. Cheers 🥂
[Hungry Lah!]
Probably the best matcha latte/ice blended in town.
Very thick matcha tea leaf flavour. Awesome. Refreshing as well.
Let me know if you have tried it and queued for it before!

Can be our favourite hangout place with very good tea selections!
Good green tea drinks and ice cream selection! Interior is also tastefully decorated.
I really enjoyed the black sesame cake and the matcha latte, but I think it’s pretty overpriced. Spent close to $50 for 4 cakes, 2 drinks (dined in & also took away 2 cakes). They charged an extra 30 cents for each cake to go, which is strange because they are both packed in the same box. Not sure why they have to charge 30 cents twice. Although I like the food and drinks, I don’t think I will return again partly because the staff also didn’t seem welcoming or friendly.
Love this strong matcha and hojicha flavor soft serve! Not too sweet.. Yum..
The matcha is as good as before. Hojicha is too sweet.
Legit matcha tea that is oo soo thick and adequately priced for the amount of matcha in each cup.
Best to order takeaway to avoid the service charge ontop of GST.
Cake is meant for sharing as the filling is extremely thick. That makes its value for money.
Anyone comparing with nana green tea will have found this place a much better fix for matcha cravings.
Went today after a museum outing to enjoy some Japanese inspired modern cafe with friend 😊 . Recommend the yuzu slice It was tangy and citrus awesome. The hojicha yuzu was too sweet to my taste buds but chocolate base was great .Will give it a 5 star if both are to my liking . Expected damage is roughly :$5 to $20 depending on budget .
Recommend to come here with friends , alone for quality time or if need time to unwind from stress well the tea is top notch!
Place is cramped and your experience is dependent on the seating you get. Cakes and drinks are top class as expected
Great place to chill and have matcha. Super classy and minimalist vibes (:
My husband was concerned about this, so our family of four arrived at the store a little before 2:30 pm today (public holiday).
The store opened at 12:00, and it was already full, with one group waiting in front of us. The staff told me something like ``I think it would be a 15-20 minute wait,'' but luckily I was shown to my seat within 5 minutes.
You will be told your table number, enter that number on the touch panel at the entrance of the store, and then go to the order screen. The menu is easy to understand and has photos, so I personally feel safe. I love that you can choose the sweetness and amount of ice for your drinks!
Anyway, it's fashionable and beautiful. Both the store and the menu. My husband said, ``As expected, the employees at these stores seem to be good-looking guys and pretty women...'' I-sure...I agree.
By the way, the waffle that my middle school daughter chose had a choice of one ice cream and I thought it was expensive at $15.80, but even though the waffle was large, it was light and easy to swallow. My daughter said, ``I can have another one!'' and seemed to really like it (lol). If you pay more, you can choose two types of ice cream in total, so I thought it would be a good idea to share it with someone.
Also, to prevent the ice cream from melting too quickly, I used a small fan to cool the surface of the waffle. (Just my prediction)
I passed by the store just after 3:00 pm, and it seemed like there were about 8 people waiting.
The matcha drinks and waffles are both delicious! Especially the waffle is very crispy and not greasy.
A relaxing space
The sesame ice cream was also authentic and delicious!
Matcha tart and brown rice tea latte.
I thought matcha and matcha would be too strong, so I chose a brown rice tea latte for my drink.
Everything about the matcha tart was delicious, right down to the tart base.
Not very popular, I feel like I'm getting obsolete
Good damn
Love the staff Hannah, she recommended the hojicha tart and goma cake. It was SERIOUSLY GOOOOOOODDDD
