Reviews of So Good Char Chan Tang
Food is good overall. That’s the only saving grace.
Service staff is ok only, just do what they have to do and can be rather rude at times. basically self-service from collection to returning of cutleries.
Ordering system including the IT POS is dumb. Keep beeping when the food is not ready. Kitchen staff said cannot turn off. Please go and spend some money to upgrade since business is good.
Atmosphere is also fine for dining and some tea with ample space between tables.
This place is always full of people. The food tastes not bad. The only downside is to fight for sits.
Delicious food. Went for dinner so no chance to try the dimsum. Next time.
Delicious all day breakfast! Must try! A bit crowded but the ground employee managed to help us with seats (be prepared to share table during peak hrs) For a quick meal is still ok, not a good place for gathering and talk talk cos too noisy and people are waiting for tables. Ventilation can be better I think, I smell oily after meal 😁. Keep it up So Good!
Confirmed quality standard..
Foods and coffee are nice..
Their roast duck and pork looks very attractive!
A very interesting self service tim sum & HK food set up. The char siew bun was 1 of my favourite. Very soft & tender. In fact almost everything my friends ordered seemed to be soft & tender. Good food & value for money. I also tried the pastries as recommended by my friend. Happened to order a tiny choc cake & super surprise at how soft it is. A good place to find nice HK food during off peak hours. If you need to come during the peak hours, you do need to try come earlier to find a place for your group of friends.
I was here when my loved ones had a serious craving for Hong Kong styled food. On a whim, we drove down to Sin Ming Lane's So Good Cha Chan Tang.
Oh BOY! The food was so good it heralded memories back when I visited the famous Honolulu Cafe at Wan Chai, Hong Kong. I would recommend these lovely food items:
1. Char siew bao. The filling in there is just different. It's less sweet and more savoury compared with the typical Singapore variant.
2. Chee cheong fun (or 街边猪肠粉). The drizzle of sauce and peanut butter makes this dish a rich, thick carbohydrate variety. Be warned though: the flavour fatigue on this one wears on you very quickly. It's better to eat this with another person.
3. Flaky char siew puff (or 叉烧酥). The distinctive is in its buttery skin.
4. Yuan yang. There's something extra smooth about this concoction which makes it different from the usual Toastbox or Ya Kun variant.
Food is relatively affordable for restaurant quality. Portions slightly smaller than expected. There were no problems with the service. Overall pretty good.
Came here about 7pm and there was a long queue to order. Sadly, many things were sold out by the time we arrived. Tried the beef brisket noodle, shrimp wanton noodle, deep fried prawn dumpling and the glutinous rice dumpling (because iced milk tea, glutinous rice, Cheong fun, roast meats were all not available) The cashier did not even bother to inform which items were not available or sold out at the start so as you will only slowly find out as you order which is frankly ridiculous.
The beef brisket came with a decent portion of beef atop a bed of springy noodle, which was not too bad.
Shrimp wanton noodle looked a little sad but overall it was also palatable and like the beef noodles, had a springy texture to the noodle even though it was slightly on the dry side.
The prawn dumplings were not quite worth it. They were decent but at 1.10 a pop, not really value for money. Definitely can get better ones elsewhere for cheaper.
But the worst thing was definitely the dumpling. It had a strange mushy texture to it and it was pale looking. The meat inside was also not tasty as I would expect it to be. It deserves at most 1 /5 or even 0, completely regret ordering it.
I think possibly if you come at an earlier time, when the good stuff is all available (like maybe the egg tarts or the roast meat or even the iced milk tea) it might be all better. But whatever it is, don’t order the glutinous rice dumpling.
IMHO, 1 of the best HK milk tea in SG. Polo bun, french toast, pan fried carrot cake are nice. Comparing 100am and i12, this is the only outlet with raw sugar. Free wkend parking. Q spacious, stroller and wheelchair frenly. The bakery having 20% discount aft 6pm, but my experience is that usually not much left by then
Went there during public holiday. There is a long queue but moved efficiently and orderly. Started eating about 30 to 40 minutes after reaching.
The food and drinks are excellent!!
Let me start with the drinks. We ordered ice milk tea and iced Hing Kong style coffee. The tea is full of tea leave flavour so very special and nice. The Hong Kong style coffee is different from the local blend and different from the western style. Definitely recommend to try. Nice coffee bean fragrance.
Ordered the beef brisket noodles. The beef is tender infused with flavour. The noodles is a q q and goes nicely with the beef sauce used. Please remember to ask for the Chili. Complements very well.
We also ordered the French toast! Wow! It is heavenly soft inside and crunchy outside. The thick slab of butter on top is sinfully delicious on the toast. Slather on the butter and honey… wow! Heavenly!
Ordered the Chee Cheong Fun with char siew. Interesting there is no garnishing on the Chee Cheong fun. Only the strips of Chee Cheong fun and the sauce. The sauce is flavourful but nothing stands out.
We tried the fried carrot cake too. There are chunks of carrot and the inside is so soft! Outside is nicely fried and crispy!
We also ordered the chicken feet. Very flavourful and tender. The skin slipped off the bones.
Then we went next door to order pastries from the bakery. Very nice. The char siew sou is very nice. They also have tiny chicken pies which are good too!
Overall a very nice wonderful experience!
Nice Hong Kong style Char Chan Teng tucked away in the industrial estate of Mid Valley in Sin Ming. Highly recommended for authentic tasting Hong Kong style food and Dim Sum!
Midview city SoGood Cafe is one of the their biggest HK Cafe. I like to frequent here as it offers a great variety of HK food and combi with the bakery next door makes the cafe smells so buttery! I love having my tea break and lunch as I can smell the food and of course I smell like a walking croissant as well 😅
Been here umpteen times and still liking to order my favourite fried rice with black pepper chicken chop with egg and sausage.
Food is good. Love it but the ordering system on the panels are not very friendly. Nets payment cannot go through and it keeps showing error. When you cancel the payment, it cancels the entire order and have to go through everything again. Quite frustrating.
Situated in an industrial building beside Ai Tong Primary. This place serves affordable and decent hong kong fare.
The roast meat is crispy but a bit tad fatty and cold.
The roast duck I had was pretty tough, and the char siew was okay, nothing to shout about.
The toast was nice and so good is known for their bakes. Many other items on the menu to try and would come again in future.
Arrived on a weekday morning and the place was full & after trying the food, no wonder there’s a crowd!
For a little taste of HK in singapore, Here’s the place to be! One positive difference, the service staff aint as rude as the ones you expect in HK.
I got the macaroni soup & it tasted exactly as i remembered- definitely hit the spot!
i also really enjoyed the simple century egg congee but it came without the fried youtiao unlike the picture. the chee cheong fan was really good too. we ordered too much for 2 pax but ate it all up
their HK milk tea is as authentic as tsui wah too!
my must orders are
- condensed milk bun
- macaroni soup
- milk tea
- soya sauce chicken
- roasted duck
the duck n chicken we bought home so not pictured here but there’s a promotional price of $16 for takeaway whole chicken
the roast duck is abit pricey but so good !
will definitely revisit this little gem!
also they charge 30 cents per container and the container charge added up to $2.40 (including condiments) - not sure if they allow you to bring your own container
- they also have a bakery next door, their HK char siew polo bao and egg tarts are highly underrated! do give it a try !
Food selection was wide and decent but their drinks can be better improved. Milk tea was bland and not great. Coffee was way too sweet. Air con was not powerful enough.
First visit to mid view city branch. Waited prob 10 min for a table which is considered fast. Tables are vastly spaced. However the circulation of air is still not as good and the environment is quite warm.
Food wise it is good. Pity that char siew is sold out by then. And the beef stew is slightly on the tough side.
It is a decent fast food chain. I'm more attracted to the price. Though food is not extremely impressive, but it is good enough if anyone miss Hong Kong food. Do give the followimg a try: milk tea, duck noodles and pomelo bun.
Need to queue for the table and then order the food at the counter. There is no menu provided on the table so it will be best if you checkout the menu while queuing.
We ordered the wanton noodle, baked rice, congee and French toast. Overall the food is good.
Their bakery is just beside the restaurant.
Best authentic Hong Kong breakfast I’ve had in Singapore. Prices are also reasonable. Breakfast sets are available till 11am but it gets crowded fast so come early!
I'm thankful that sg has this char chan teng and hope that their standard (and price too) will remain the same. Looking at the pics (and these are not all I've had), it'll show how much I love their food and I aim to finish all the items on their menu that I usually order in HK. The xiduoshi (french toast) is almost just as I remembered, milk tea is thick and creamy, noodles is springy and the chilli oil is a must, chicken glutinous rice is small but pack with flavourful ingredient, the congee... although texture not the same as hk but it has an addictive flavour to it, even the very normal macaroni and instant noodles has creamy tasty soup. There's always a special set value meal that you can order almost throughout the day, except night (?) (Coz I've not been there at night yet but I should!) HK is not cheap too for this kind of meal so till I get to travel again, I'm still coming back for more!
came here with some expectations but was quite let down. breakfast set B1 was okay, scrambled eggs and sausages and bacon were not bad and the buttered toasted bun was also quite good, but the baked beans were very hard. chee cheong fun was okay only and porridge as well. the lor mai kai was the only saving grace but the coffee was horrendous. highly DO NOT recommend the coffee and yuan yang as it tastes bitter and cheap, like instant coffee from a cheap machine.
i’ve heard the teh is good. the thick toast and egg tarts were okay but not the best. pastries, bread and egg tarts have to be bought by yourself in the bakery section, cannot be ordered at the main counter.
honestly, the food is okay all in all, maybe i didn’t try the right items and the full menu wasn’t available yet as i went before 11am, but the whole system of ordering and queuing was so bad.
firstly, there is no limit on the number of people in the restaurant even on a sunday, so it was crowded and quite packed as it was quite a small space. if NEA goes to check their shop, they confirm kena fine. there is no queuing system for seats, and customers have to fight for seats and hover around other customers who are still eating as they wait to chope the tables. you also queue up to order and collect the food yourself.
cutlery and condiments are also not automatically given or put conveniently at a station for yourself to take, you have to ask for them from the pickup counter, which is really inconvenient especially during busy hours. all in all, not worth it to make a trip down if it’s far, and especially on weekends and peak hours
An eatery reminiscent of HK located within an industrial hub (not very near the mrt, will have to take bus here). Went around 6.15pm on a monday evening and it was pretty quiet and empty; there was not much queue until around 7pm.
Ordering is done over the counter and food is self-collected using a pager device. The food were served promptly.
The baked tomato pork chop rice was quite big in portion, had quite a few pork chops and pretty OK for the price. My friend had a macaroni soup set meal that comes with a sandwich and 2 eggs and drink, where unfortunately the amount of macaroni was not much (couldn't see the macaroni in the soup until they were scooped up) but the soup was comforting for a rainy night. Their milk tea was thick and shiok, and so was their french toast. It is nice to come here for a quick bite :)
the MSG porridge is still as nice as ever, since imperial treasure days. the liu sar bao is lava hot! the french toast n poloh bao w butter - only available after 230pm. aiyo so good la. no wonder the place is packed!
Haven't been here in a while but had a shock when I dined there today. Had the shrimp wanton noodles, pan fried carrot cake and steamed salted egg custard bao. Yes the food is still nice. But the size/portion has shrunk beyond recognisable. Absolutely not value for money. Likely won't be returning.
Mess and chaos ensues in this popular char chan teng eatery. Hopefully the following guidance can help newbies:
1) enter and stake an available table by standing really close in typical Singaporean kiasu-ism (preferably a group of diners who are finishing up)
2) after securing a table, join the queue to order and make payment, and collect your buzzer
3) collect your items once buzzed and hold on to the buzzer until ALL your food and beverages are collected as they release your ordered items not in one entire sitting
4) any takeaways require additional 30c for Tupperware so be advised to bring your own takeaway containers
HK style fast food cafe serving good quality dishes n bakery. Roasted duck is tasty, baked pork chop rice is nice. Prices r very reasonable.
SinMing branch is the best one, although not so convenient to access. Food quality 7/10; but while compare with the price, 8/10. (Much reasonable while compare with another HK restaurant in JP)
Crowded on Sun morning. Didn't like the system in which there was no crowd management. Will be better if they hv queue system and assign table based on number of people and arrival order. Food is ordinary, and quite pricey.
Food - good, been here a few times.
Service- self service but after 7pm , they will help you to clear the tray
Atmosphere - neutral
French toast: delicious! Bread was soft and fluffy.
So Good Breakfast set was great too, their condensed milk bread was crusty and well toasted
Milk tea: a bit too bitter and “siap” even with sugar. Not the best hk milk tea around
Good HK cha chan teng at reasonable price. A lot of food options and set menus.
Good Porridge HK style which is smooth and fine. Char Siu bun is tasty.
They live up to their namesake. Their egg tarts are really good too. Unfortunately, if you're a big party of 8 or more, there is no way to seat everyone at the same table (we were a party of 12 with 5 children, spread across three tables).
Was at 100am and saw their new branch has opened with queue. I saw some reviews saying the bun is hard and decided to give it a try. Waited half an hour and ordered the all-day breakfast. It is perfect size for not a big eater like myself. Taste is not bad and reasonable price. The bun is REALLY HARD and luckily i have good teeth. Lol... Don't mind to return again but won't queue in line for half an hour for their food.
Severely underrated. The egg tarts are easily one of the BEST in Singapore. You can get them from their bakery next to the Char Chan Teng. A
The Char Chan Teng serves good HK fare too. Definitely worth the money and wait. Beware of weekend queues. Can be quite long.
Jan 2021. Not a bad place to wait for a car wash and at the same time enjoying HK heartland cafe food.
We ordered lots of 猪肠粉,porridge, 糯米鸡,云吞面,奶茶 etc at around $50+.
A special mention was the 云吞面, the noodle was ultra thin doused with the special sauce, reminiscing of my trip to HK. Don't expect 叉烧 in a HK 云吞面.
The only complaint was looking for a table was a chore. Luckily, more Singaporeans were patient and orderly.
Need to wait 30mins before you order at the self service POS and pay. Best is the char Siew bao. The noodles and Marconi has a lot of msg. Coffee diluted. Roast duck and pork is the best.
Nice dim xum overall! A few pointers to note: 1) I wouldnt encourage old folks going alone unless they are mobile and active or companied by helper or family. This is like a foodcourt concept. Queue to order, self collect at the counter.
2) Go in 3s as their serving is portion of 3 mostly.
3) Noodles portion is small, so dun even think of sharing.
4) dun order too much. Well actually its ok if u dun mind keep walking back to the collection point to collect yor food.
So only GST is billed. No service charge.
Fast service and good food. This place is so much better than the branch at Raffles Place. Love the Curry Beef Brisket with rice. Authentic Hong Kong and Macau Cha Chan Teng food. Will be back!
My favourite joint for HK food. Love the breakfast sets and shrimp noodles. Always end up over eating. 😅
Normal HK style food. A bit high on the salt. Nothing much to shout about. But their bakery was quite good....Egg tart, lo po peng.
Tried both hot and iced milk tea, french toasts and crispy bun with condensed milk. Iced milk tea was great, hot milk tea came unsweetened with a few sugar packets given. French toasts tasted just like any ordinary french toasts, but the crispy bun was super good! Excited to be back to try the rest of the menu!
Baked rice not as good as Xing Wang.
Dried Fried Beef Horfun no enough wok hei and taste very normal.
CCF taste ok.
Overall food is nice but have to self service to collect food when the buzzer is on... usually have to walk a few times to collect all. The pastry shop within the eatery is ok I would say but not the best haha. ^_^
1st time and I have to say it's one of the best place for breakfast. Must try their crispy bun with condensed milk, bolo bun with butter and fried vermicelli with their house chilli oil.
Food generally good but they seriously need to change their ordering system. Long q just to order your food (as seen in photo). Means, you either over order or if u need more food, you will give up and leave half satisfied. 2 stars lost due to that
Worth the wait for all these. In fact the food was served in a jiffy. The long wait comes from the line to place order. The efficiency in the kitchen is something worth mentioning. We got all our food in less than 10 mins of wait time. The service is good and price is really affordable. Their take away only promotion (soy sauce chicken for $14 +$0.30) is worth giving it a try. Definitely be coming back for more HK 茶餐厅 cravings.
Free parking for 1hr weekdays and free during weekends. There is a bakery too with nice buns. Prices not that cheap though. But soy chicken was good
Always a nice place for HK food. Centrally located with few branches..
Always love the macaroni soup at So Good! But never manage to get the roast duck as they are usually sold out early, good chance of getting will be to reach there by 6pm (maybe?).
The bakery offers high quality bread and also egg tarts.
As for the atmosphere, if you wish for a place busting with energy, with people chit chatting, sound of cutlery hitting the plates, then this is the place!
Food quality is great, the noodles, rice and toasts etc were all nicely done and tasted good. Additional bonus is that some of the staff really gives that rude vibe that u get from cafes in Hong Kong lol, especially when you dabao and ask a few questions. (But they are generally nice)
Came here on a saturday for lunch and it was extremely crowded, however we were lucky enough to get a table for 12 albeit it being very cramped. The wait to order was very long as it was the self order kiosks, but the food didn’t take too long to be served.
Food was ok i guess nothing much to say. Had to clear our own tables though.
The lor mai gai is soft, tender and tasty! Prawns were big and juicy in the rice flour roll. Bolo butter bun and French toast were great sides :)
Taste is always good here. Recently tried the har cheong gai chicken wings as other food have run out 😅
But on the pricier side and smaller portion
Serves HK delicacy. Expensive and zero customer service food court instead of restaurant. Food can be better. Only the polo bun worth to try.
We ordered roast pork and roast duck noodles and a plate of duck drumstick. Food is quite tasty but a little heavy on the salty end. Would have been better if they cut down on the salt. Guy taking the order was not very friendly. Made customers feel unwelcome. We stepped over to their bread shop to buy some buns after dinner. Same kind of blunt and not so friendly service at the cashier. Must be something in the air. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon.
Love the food with many HK taste, but dislike their seating arrangement.... Unlike their 111 Somerset outlet, we have to look for the seats and have to wait around those eating customers. Dont like the feeling of looking and being looked feeling...
I’ve always liked coming to So Good because the food quality & standards are excellent Carrot cake is fried to the perfect consistency and porridge is light but filling.
Today however I had the worst experience with two of your staff - Han Leong Seow and another younger lady server. Long story cut short:
1. My queue number was being called but I had taken liberty with a friend to clear the table that was t ours
2. Brought tray hoping to get a server to take over the clearing
3. Young lady server was standing idling and so I asked to take the tray. She rudely said why I can’t bring tray to the disposal area. I said my number was being called
4. She complained to the manager Mr Han and he was very rude as well when I feedback about the server. I told him I was going to make a complaint and he said he’d give me his full name and to go ahead
I think the manager is a very poor example of service at your Capitol branch. While I understand his desire to protect his staff, he has the worst and rudest attitude when he engages with clients. A restaurant can only survive so long on food alone. We see the servers and go back to eateries also because of service. I am of the opinion that his behaviour and the young lady’s behaviour needs to be surfaced and highlighted and the higher management to take them in hand. It was the young lady’s job to clear the table and so I am not wrong in asking her to take over the tray. The manager should present himself apologetic instead of being high and mighty about the whole incident. He did not even offer an explanation and just claimed that I was rude to his server when I was deliberate in saying please. If you don’t take them in hand, you will drive away a lot of your discerning customers who expect a minimal level of polite service
Self service style cafe.
Free seating - look for table yrself
Order from kiosk & collect buzzer, wait for yr food to b ready.
B prepared to collect multiple times as different food/drink items r done.
Hold onto yr buzzer until all yr orders are collected b4 returning at the basket.
Food is not bad but abit overated based on the long queue and price also not that cheap. The fried dumplings had interesting fillings it was sooo tiny to be 3 for $3.30. Popiah looks special, taste-wise ok but filling also little. Chicken feet was nice. Porridge abit too watery. Beef was tender but curry a little too oily. Thick toast nice but also oily. Cheong fun is not too bad too.
French toast tasted bland but was good if eat with the butter and honey. Personally I like the honey taste. Char siu sor filling was juicy and fresh. Hk milk tea would prefer it to be more gao. Disappointed it does not have soy sauce chow mein after I checked with the staff.
This is my fifth time to dine here. The food tastes very good and the cooking is very attentive, but the service needs to be improved. Although there is no 10% service charge and the guests are self-service, when asking the guests to get their meals, they should serve the entire meal instead of asking the guests to delay getting their drinks without saying anything else. On a public holiday, the kitchen counter was in a mess, guests were kept waiting and waiting, sauces were not provided, Western tableware changed to Chinese tableware, and the coffee was not mixed.
During public holidays, when there are more customers and business is better, the company should hire some part-time workers so as not to seriously affect the quality.
Good service is the way to sustainable business. I hope I can continue to dine in restaurants with good food and enjoy a good dining environment. in (2021)
Today is Christmas Day, 25/12/2023. I came to So Good for a meal early in the morning and the changes were very big. The novel automated ordering system is also very orderly when picking up meals. It really deserves a lot of praise👍. Of course the food is still delicious🙃
I wish everyone a happy Christmas and a happy meal🥂☃️
Very Hong Kong style, friends who are homesick can give it a try
It tastes like a Hong Kong tea restaurant. The milk tea uses black and white milk. It’s full of flavor!
We ordered roast duck rice, tomato baked pork chop rice and wonton noodles (dry). Overall so-so.
