Reviews of Ikoma Language School
Ikoma Language School is truly a gem for anyone looking to learn Japanese in Singapore. The teachers are native speakers, highly professional, and incredibly patient, ensuring every student is well-supported throughout their learning journey. The course structure is well-organized, with a strong balance of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and cultural knowledge, making it perfect for beginners and advanced learners alike.
The location is conveniently situated in Orchard, making it accessible for both students and working professionals. The school also offers flexible schedules, which is great for busy individuals. I particularly appreciate how the teachers make lessons engaging and interactive, fostering an environment where students feel encouraged to actively participate and practice Japanese.
What stands out the most is the genuine passion the teachers have for teaching and their dedication to helping students succeed. Whether you’re preparing for the JLPT or learning Japanese for travel or work, Ikoma is the place to go. Highly recommended for anyone serious about mastering Japanese!
A huge shoutout to Ikoma Language School! I studied here many years ago and recently returned to join the advanced class. The teachers and front desk staff are incredibly welcoming, making the learning experience so enjoyable. I especially appreciate my advanced class teacher, Tsurumi, who is kind and explains concepts clearly. Highly recommend this school to anyone looking to learn Japanese!
I’ve finished Basic level with Uematsu Sensei, Oyama Sensei & Yamashita Sensei.
Ikoma was recommended by many including my friend, and I definitely can see why after attending lessons here.
Firstly, the reception counter is super responsive. Scheduling make-up lessons is fast and easy.
Secondly, Sensei knows basic English but will speak in (relatable) basic Japanese, giving me many opportunities to practice listening and speaking.
Thirdly, the pace is quite fast but not too fast that I can’t catch up or feel discouraged. Instead, I feel I have enough material to take home and revise every week, and it doesn’t feel draggy or boring.
The vibe/environment differs from class to class depending on students and teacher, so it might be good to hop around and have a feel.
I really enjoy learning Japanese at Ikoma and will recommend it to anyone considering learning Japanese. :)
Just completed the entire syllabus at this school which took about 8 years on a once a week basis.
The school has many classes which offers many replacement arrangements and alternatives. This was the best selling point for me.
The teachers are patient and actively encourage us to engage in conversation in Japanese to improve our conversational abilities.
Special mention to Sugitate sensei who makes classes enjoyable and interesting. It's not just the language you're learning but also the nuances of the culture.
Prep courses for JPLT also deserve a mention, they are really intense and really aids you in passing the exams.
Good job Ikoma! Keep it up!
Pros:
- Teachers (at least the one who carried out my placement tests; Fukui Sensei if I am right) care about making sure you can catch up and that you excel in learning Japanese.
- Teachers (at least the one in my class; Hirai Sensei) make sure students get at least sufficient opportunities to practice speaking Japanese.
- Pace is very manageable for part-time studying Japanese.
- Allowing of make up lessons if you cannot make it on a particular day, but subjected to availability.
- Rate is market level, but worth the value and time.
- Overall, at least among the best places to learn Nihongo in SG. So, 5/5.
Cons:
Not much I can really think of, but...
- Not really a con (depending on the individual; but it is for me seeking to learn as fast as possible). There are currently only once-a-week classes for beginners. The twice-a-week classes are already close to intermediate stage. And since I was already at chapter 13 for Minna no Nihongo, I had to painfully rush and cramp learning chapters 14 to 18 in a single week to join the twice-a-week class. For beginners learning to start at a leisure pace, it WON'T be a problem. To get to N5 level at once-a-week, it takes 1 year, while 6 months for twice-a-week.
- Also, not really that significant. The teachers there tend to only speak Japanese and only using English if necessary, like many other places.
Really well organised and good fun. They've clearly thought about students from different walks of life having different and busy schedules and have good systems in place to help if you miss a class or need to do one week's class another day. It goes at a pretty fast pace but there's lots of good materials (printed, audio etc) and it's well-structured. Even the 3 hour classes go by quickly and don't seem to get boring.
Great views from the classrooms too!
I am studying Japanese at ikoma since 2013. I have already graduated since then. Although I have repeated a few times but I feel there is still much to learn and improve. Hope ikoma will have more classes that I can attend
IKOMA is a fantastic school for the following reasons:
- quality - my teacher Hosoi-sensei was great, even though my weekend class was long (3 hr) he was always energetic and keeping it fun.
- i believe the teaching method is effective . Teachers try to use only minimal English and use a lot of pictures.
- small groups. After term 1 some people dropped out and the class was usually 4-8 people.
- pleasant environment, nice classrooms, they even have some free magazines in Japanese and an authentic vending machine from Japan - except the price of drinks is LOWER than in Tokyo
- options available for serious learners to go to JP for an intensive study
- an EXCELLENT value, highest quality teaching at perhaps the lowest price
- Japanese standard of customer service.
- all grammar points are explained very clearly in the materials in English (and Mandarin)
Some other information:
- materials they use is Minna No Nihongo. This material is quite demanding and DEFINITELY requires some serious work at home, if you don't want to fall behind. However, for a language as difficult as Japanese, this is probably the best way to go about it.
- they have a school in Tokyo as well (albeit small) where you can continue study in case you plan to move to Japan
- when i moved from SG to JP mid-term they were even kind enough to transfer my balance from Ikoma SG to Ikoma Tokyo, so i saved some money
Studying here for almost 4 years! Can change classes based on the lesson schedule with a phone call, when you cannot make it for class 📞😉
Awesome place to learn Japanese. Very organised teaching. There is also sufficient interaction so that more chance to practise conversations.
Ikoma is professional and methodology of teaching is structured and organised. Better than Bunka.
Love the systematic approach to teaching which allows for information to be retained longer.
Though expensive, it is a good school to be learning Japanese
My friends are currently taking classes here. He has been going to school for many years. He showed me a textbook, but it was a Japanese language lesson using ancient Japanese texts. I'm giving it a 4 star because I have no idea if it's possible to learn modern, practical Japanese with this text. My friend thought this text would be useful for sightseeing in Japan, but no matter how I looked at it, I didn't think it had the information (tools) and policies (pathways to the shortest route) necessary to achieve my goals.
My foreign friend who has N1 (JLPT) certification is not studying at this school. I have many friends who can speak Japanese by self-teaching themselves on YouTube.
If you want to start learning in the N5 class using Singapore government vouchers or trial classes, then you might want to try commuting to the school if you want to enjoy it.
Great place to learn Japanese! Great Japanese school!
