Reviews of Tiong Bahru Market
Food is good and great value for the price. $13.5 for everything. Awesome. Yet, it is hot. We ate there at 9am and it is already hot. We ate among the locals and soaked in the culture. The experience is great. I asked a couple of people about the food that they were eating and they were very friendly to answer my question. The place is incredibly clean. There are no smelly odors, and even the wet market is downstairs. All in all. It is a perfect place to experience local culture.
Traditional hawker’s centre serving all varieties of local Singapore food. Some of the stalls are already into their 2 or 3 generations of family heritage, so this says a lot about the food quality and longevity. Place is clean and airy, and sits on top of the wet market which is bustling in the mornings.
A special mention to the delicious and tasty soya bean milk drink and bean curd from Teck Seng Soya Bean milk which serves handmade traditional soya milk. Great service from this family run stall and a must try when dining at this place. However they are typically sold out by 1.00pm on weekends, so get there early.
Food was so good, as u can see a long queue. That tenant guarantee the best food with a long queue. But the place w/o aircon so a little hot make sure u need to take a bath after that.
Came here the first time and find it impressive, the food stall fully open on weekend, I know it because the next day on Monday we came for the food but mostly closed.
The toast was just okay, I think the best could be in Ipoh. Xiao long Bao was not bad, juicy inside and flavorful. And the fish cake and tofu from the fish ball stall was delicious.
The dim sum place makes me queueing for about 20 minutes. Cha siew bun is not bad, too small compare to Malaysia, prawn dumpling is okay, the skin is too thick. Siew mai is big, tastes like the one where I bought from Pasar malam in Malaysia.
Great variety of food to choose from in this hawker centre located on the 2nd level. The famous Tiong Bahru Pau and Fish Balls are one of the earlier hawkers. All stores are worth a try! Crowded in the afternoon on weekdays! The seats right below the giant fans are cooler.
Breakfast in here 27 November 2023…
I try 3 Food Stall and 1 drink stall…
We try the famous Jian Bo Shui Kueh, Tiong Bahru Fried Kway Teow, and Carrot Cake… then we go to Tiong Bahru Soya Bean…
Overall the food and drinks its good… 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
food delicious and down to earth
food price is paid separated from the drinks price
most people ordered mee kia / mee pok here. but do give mee tai bak (米台目) a try too 👍🏻
chili paddy self-service
When I'm in Singapore I love to stay in Tiong Bahru, and I stay there mostly because of this market. Good variety, uncluttered, but still busy and fresh. The longest lines move fast and normally are a good sign.
It used to have some Arab food, but now is mostly south east Asian. The bao store here is an institution.
Didn't know this hawker center opens at dinner time . Came across this western food stall and try the grandma fried chicken and pork chop with many sides to choose from and we love it very much , will definitely return again and try other dishes , cashier and staffs are friendly too . 😋👍
Downright local place, although almost all local cuisines, only 1 malay food stall with no indian food stall and a handful non local cuisines sighted. Lost it’s old time vibe and charm though, guess the super long queues due to marvelicious food are less sighted in view of nil succession
I grew up in this area and knew some of the stalls which have been around for 50 years or longer. Those are shown in the photos. Some of the stall owners used to live around the same neighborhood as me. However the quality of food had degraded over the years in general. There were short cut taken in order to cope with the demands
Tiong Bahru is a hidden food paradise, very civilian, only open until 3pm every day. There are about 50 stalls, but 3 stalls are recommended by Michelin Gourmand.
A place congregating the best foods of Singapore all at one place.
Lor Mee 178 is a must-try. Chwee kueh is definitely one of my breakfast favourites.
Affordable and at a readily accessible location of Singapore, hard to find good and affordable food in Singapore in inflationary environment times.
Truly representative of all things nostalgic and great about local food. What are you waiting for, must go!
Lots of nice food here but be prepared to queue for the popular food like chicken rice.
It is a market so everything is self service, make sure you return your plates after eating.
Weekends are super crowded. The place is especially warm in the afternoon so wear light attire for your own comfort.
Much more authentic and way more affordable than the other famous hawker places that have unfortunately become tourist traps and charge as much as restaurants (Newton, Lao Pa Sat). The stalls are a bit hit or miss, so we just went to where there were longer lines of locals. Pretty clean and fast. Many stalls don't accept cards and none give napkins, so come prepared.
This market reminds me of old China .when I was in China 20yrs ago, there were so many market like this! I liked it. You can get everything here, fresh meat,seafood,egg,clothes,shoes,bags...I bought dress in very cheap price.
And also there’s a huge food court in second floor
This TB market is a morning place for food galore especially on weekends. However if you happen to be around this vicinity, there are still saving grace for u like the char siew and roast pork stall, tze char stall, dessert stalls oyster omelet stall and western stall. Nice and airy ambience await you too.
Very clean hawker stalls located in the building. Been coming here since I was younger but of cos they've renovated it since then. My fav Chee kuih stall is still here after so many years. Taste good but the choy bo is so average. Not as good as before but alright. Prawn mee still has a very long queue. Soya bean stall is very fresh and yum. I'll always come here to eat the local stuff if I'm in town. There are also many bakeries around to try.
This place has some of the best food and is naturally very crowded. Will definitely find seats but need to be patient. More patience is needed for the top stalls here. Good eating!
A lot of food options, easy to get to and clean restrooms. The food options on the first floor are numerous. There are also a few halaal options, usually crowded, but never visit between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm, most of the places are closed, unfortunately we went around that time. We still did find a few open places, must be awesome in full swing. The place is kept pretty clean.
Been awhile since I last visited Tiong Baru Market.
Just as vibrant as before , even better now especially the FOOD COURT.
Lots of stalls & choices to choose from.
A MUST place for shopping & eating. DON'T MISS VISITING THIS PLACE .
My to-go place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Conveniently located within short walking distance from Havelock MRT. You can find almost everything that suits your fancy. You’re craving for tom yum soup? They have it. Nasi lemak? They also have it. Cantonese? They have it. Noodles variety from bak chor mee, wonton noodle, kway teow, kway chap, hokkian noodle: you can have it all. Price is very affordable and the uncles & aunties are very kind. I like to get my breakfast very early in the morning 5-6am here. Oh they also have killer soy bean milk. Definitely a must-visit. Never say you’ve been to SG without a visit to their landmark hawker centre.
Charming market with loads to see. Seafood stalls, choice cuts of beef (you can even get good wagyu beef) and lots of fruit and vegetable stalls to explore as well.
The true Singapore Hawker food stall experience!! The energy is very infectious and the smells of deliciousness will really get those stomach juices running. Now, I will never be able to review every single stall and every single dish, because there are just so many!! But this is a must visit and must experience place in Singapore. I came here with my brother who's lived here for a while and has his favorite stalls. We first got the traditional Singapore breakfast, which included the coconut jam toast with egg and sugarcane juice. Then, when we came here another time, we got the roasted chicken and rice plate and the pig soup. Everything was simply yummy!! These recipes are so simple, yet so flavorful and delicious. You definitely get the food sweats, but that just means that you've enjoyed it all. While the kway teow remains my absolute favorite Singaporean dish, the chicken and rice were delicious and the pig soup was just so soothing!
For dessert we tried something called (I'm probably butchering this) Chng teng and a mango and passion fruit nata de Coco. The Chng teng had an India tea based flavor to it and was a mix of shaved ice, res beans, dates, boba and some other things we couldn't identify. The flavor was very subtle and by itself, it was very refreshing. The nata de Coco, on the other hand, was a blast of flavor with every bite. The mango and passion fruit produced a little tart but mostly sweet background to the jelly cubes and shaved ice. This one definitely overpowered the Chng teng in our mouths so I would recommend not getting both if you want to enjoy the flavors.
If I had more time here, I would definitely try out more things! This has been an amazing experience so far!!
Two old senior handling the store... lor mee very入味, only the fried fish too salty... prepare for the Q thou... small at $3.50, medium at $4.50, big at $5.50... very 古早味...
Everything under one roof. Good selection of hawker food eg Curry rice, soya bean milk, Lor Mee, Char kway teow, Roast meat rice and many more.
Shops downstairs selling the best smelling flowers.
Wet market good selection of vegetables, fruits etc.
Many small shops selling women apparel.
The whole area has a very homey cozy little village feel.
Clean hawker with a good variety of delicious lunch options. Choose from Hui Ji fish ball noodles, Koh Pig Organ soup, Lor Mee, Mee Bakso and Nasi lemak at this big hawker. Located on level 2.
Plenty of good food around. Best visited after Monday as most stores are not open on Monday. There are still good food to eat just lesser choices. Parking are ample around the area by the Road or within the premises and not too bad, should be able to find parking easily albeit some walking required during peak hours. Place are relatively clean quite unlike a typical coffee shop/hawker centre
A lot of local food stalls, mostly old timers and some young hawkers. Many stalls have long queues near lunch time, those are the ones you want to try first.. But even the less crowded stalls are pretty good. At least good enough to last through the years.
This is our regular haunt and we have a regular stall we almost always eat at. The fish or seafood soup set comes with a homemade ngoh hiang and white rice. His fish soup is so light and delicious that I can't get enough of it.
The ngoh hiang reminds me of my late mum's. I bought 10 home for Chinese New Year lunch. Froze them for a few days till CNY and then airfried till crispy before serving. My entire family loved them and my sis even tarpao the leftovers home.
The friendly Malaysian boss chef hails from Muar. He also has frozen Muar otah in his freezer for sale. Just ask him for it. He doesn't advertise it anywhere on his signboard LOL.
He also has a pomfret and cod fish set. The pomfret is fried so crispy you can crunch all the bones without any problem. I always pair the fish and the ngoh hiang with the vinegar garlic chilli sauce rather than the red cut chilli in soy sauce. Has a nice balance of sweet, salty and vinegar.
And I skip the HK soy sauce for the pomfret because it's flavourful enough on its own.
Don't go too late because he sometimes sells out by evening.
Like the upgraded place with the somewhat romantic coloured lighting. The big mechanical fans were another plus factor that made the whole place much windy.
Went there for the pig's organ soup.
Prefer the good old version when the distinct sourness of the soup was one of the draw of the town. Missed the glutinous rice in the intestine tube. Sold out when I was there.
Will definitely visit the place again.
A modern and well-managed hawker centre which is clean, spacious and well-ventilated. It has plenty of food stalls to choose from. We tried the Tow Kwar Pop, Shui Kueh and Joo Chiat Kim Choo Rice Dumpling. They were all very nice. One hidden gem worth mentioning is the Avocado Milk Shake. It is nearly as good as the famous one selling at Alexandra Village Food Centre but is much cheaper.
You know what... I could literally settle all my 3 meals everyday here.
This is one of my favourite hawker centres in Singapore that has the most nostalgic and delicious hawker food you'll ever find.
From Michelin Fried Hokkien Mee to the famous Tiong Bahru Bao, you will not run out of idea on what to eat if you live or (used to) work nearby like me.
Brought my wife back to this place when I suddenly had craving for the Fried Kuey Teow that I used to have for dinner. My wife ordered the Pig Organ Soup which I recommended.
As we still have some space left in our stomach, we decided to add some Shui Kueh and Steam Yam Cake to our dishes, before finishing off with a Ice Ching Tng dessert.
And we left the place with a satisfying appetite.
Haven been here for quite some time but looks like not much has changed, same popular stalls...
Came here on a late Sat afternoon, many of the stalls closed probably taking afternoon break.
Tabao duck and roast meat and char siew, the meats were will roasted and the duck was not too dry. Can eat.
Had cooling ching teng dessert as well, refreshing!
An Old Favourite
This large hawker centre has been around for ages. As such, numerous hawkers who have been there for years have had time to hone their skills to become amongst the best hawkers in Singapore.
There is virtually every kind of hawker food here, unless they are closed on the day you visit. I have seen long queues at the following stalls. Boneless chicken rice, lor mee, chwee kueh, hainanese rice. My personal favorite is the chai tow kueh by the escalator. They use up to 3 eggs per serving.
The place is quite well ventilated with fans to help cope with the warm weather.
A great place to try Singapore hawker food.
I have visited this place several times over many years and the food is always as welcome as it is now. For Singaporeans, if you are looking for a lazy day to while your time away, consider this. For those studying or working nearby, it will be worth visiting during one of your lunch breaks. For visitors or tourists, you will see Singapore as it is because it is like a potpourri of everything Singapore - the people that goes there, the people running their businesses there in the wet market, in the food stalls, in the various coffee shops with their various specialties, in the local boutique stalls like House of Peranakan, Tiong Bahru Bakery, Old Tiong Bahru Bak Kut Teh or Lin Rooftop Bar, in the local little restaurants, in the more upmarket restaurants next to boutique hotels, etc, etc. If you feel like visiting a temple there is one there. If you feel like going to a church service, there is one there. If you fancy a pub, there is even one there too. If you like morning porridge, there are at least 2 stalls. If you want traditional Yong Toufu, there is a coffeeshop that serves that besides their Ngoh Hiang (this is one is very sinful to your health, hehe but it is wonderful, lol). That Jian Bo Shui Kueh boasts a special oil they use which they say is oil but fat-free or oil-less or something like (you just have to go there, order, eat and find out for yourself (and don't be bothered much with their service - their stuff is good and that's all one should care for). And if you do, ask for more chilli with your Shui Kueh and walk to the next stall to get that cup of coffee from Kopi Museum. Yes, there are many coffee joints in Singapore but this one in the heart of Tiong Bahru lets you soak it (Tiong Bahru) in. The place has been recently cleaned up and refurnished somewhat and it is clean by today's general standard, even the wet market below is cleaned up to appeal to most people. This is Tiong Bahru for you, TB. The Best or rather one of the best, at least to me!
This place is a food court with popular hainan curry rice (local fav) daily food. There were over 100 stalls, any hawker food.
Best lor mee for me so far. noodles are cooked well, the soup orsauce is strong in flavor yet not too starchy. Making it easier to eat.
Ingredients are good too.
Price point excellent with the small portion priced at $3.50.
Came on saturday afternoon and it's still open despite the timing said it closed at 2pm.
Highly recommended
Revisited this famous market for lunch after a year. Nice to be able to have my favourite Prawn Noodle again. The other popular stall are still busy as usual even after 1pm. Round off with another fav, Cold Cheng Tng. 😀
Read about the Tiong Bahru Food Centre - it should be a secret tip and one of the best food centres.
There weren't many tourists, so it seems like mainly locals eat there. Food was great and the centre is very spacious.
Get to know this place and places of interest through web and get over for the visit and don't regret coming.
It's a place of a mixture of "Old and New"
Singapore unique heritage against a backdrop of tall mordern building.
The landmark of Tiong Bahru... The Tiong Bahru Market...wet market and a spacious hawker center with many varieties of famous food like "shui kueh and fish ball.
Visual museum of Tiong Bahru heritage...Home, Bird singing corner, Fortune teller and Pasar and also "goat finding" around the vicinity
Low rise Four storey pre war housing flat with spiral staircase and courtyard.
An antique vs modern, a good place to visit and for those who likes photography...
environment is clean and good air ventilation, many good food but most of the stalls close very early by noon time. What a waste, such a good place but nothing to eat after lunch time.
The fishes are fresh in this market at L1.
Hawker food in L2 has good char siu, roast pork, roasted duck & chicken as well as char siu wanton mee.
Great place to experience authentic, hawker style food in a clean and open air environment.
There are ample carpark lots at the multistorey carpark but I have to wait during peak hours. My recommendation is to go there between 11 am to 11:45 am to avoid the office lunch crowd if possible. Popular ones are hainanese curry rice and hokkien prawn noodles. Generally, the rule of thumb goes for those food stalls that have a queue if you are not sure which stall is nice.
A nice place to experience local dining. There are lots of options available here.
So many food stalls it's easy to get overwhelmed. If you don't have someone there to help guide you around another option is just to find the stalls with the longest lines and assume the locals know what's best! I recommend you find the Bo Shui Kueh - it's delicious! Also tried the Lor Mee and the Fried Kway Teow but wasn't too impressed. The food here is cheap ($2-4) making it super convenient to sample lots of food.
You would be offered with wide variety of local favourites. Many stalls are decade old modern food center, shifted from a enclosed hot stuffy corner at Tiong Bahru.
I saw tourists here enjoying the local favourites but struggling with chopsticks. Photographers have been here for hours that day shooting for food and visitors.
Love to come here for the spacious and airy atmosphere for breakfast and lunch. It has one of the most hawker stalls under one roof with a variety to choose from. Had Hokkien Prawn mee, porridge, Tau Suan and Cheng tng for brunch today. Tends to be crowded during lunch time so do go earlier as queues start to form.
Great Local food! But please don't expect service or ambience. It is very affordable fast food.
Bought set E ($5.90) and added otak ($2.20) from this nasi lemak store. The egg is runny, chicken wings is quite salty but together with the rice it's balances out. Chilli is not veryyyy spicy, a bit sweet kind. Otak patty has a nice flavor to it. The blue pea rice is a bit overcooked, the coconut taste isnt very strong though. Overall nice to give it a try though for the price for hawker food it's a bit on the high side.
Total price: $8.10
Tried these stalls:
Chinatown Zhong Zhong fine spice wu Xiang
Hong Heng fried sotong prawn mee
The wu Xiang was good, especially ngoh hiong. It has a crispy beancurd skin wrapped with a dense yam, pork and parsley filling.
Crispy prawn crackers looks fresh and not overly fried. Fried thin bee Hoon accompanied with the sweet chilli sauce was a great combi.
Prawn mee was not bad, meat was replaced fish cake. Overall flavour and chilli was good but preferred it with more gravy.
Quite a few stalls close by 3pm.
Go there early for more variety to choose from.
Fried Kway Teow 炒粿条 stall #02-08
FKT was nice and fried oyster is an essential for a good night sleep :)
Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee 草下面 #02-01
Prawn Mee prawn Mee I love me. Remember to love meself.
Hei piah 虾饼 Prawn fritters
Go find yourself hei hei hei ;)
Excellent local hawker center. Lots of options up on the second floor. Deducted one star since there is no ATM there and most of the stalls are cash only (had to go across the street to find one).
This was delicious and amazing! Such a great experience and the food and drinks was really good! Come early because the popular Places sell out quick !
Try the local food !
Took away the lor kway teow and the portion of $4.30 was tiny and only with 1 pc of fish, 2 slices of fishcake and 2 or 3 slices of pork(which was smelly) . Not worth the price as the gravy was just sweet with sugar and not at all like "lor mee gravy". Terrible plus they chuck in lots of oily fried balance batter from frying the fish.
Food is good as usual. 猪杂汤, 蚝煎, shark meat lor mee are all a must eat !!
Probably one of the most windy food court in Singapore. Food court is at level 2. Wet and dry market at lower level. Go to the roof top for more parking lots.
A popular place with bith locals and foreigners! A wide variety n very popular stores.. many tables and big fans and decent carpark.. prawn noodles, curry noodles, braised duck, hokkien mee, CKT, TP Pao etc enjoy
Tiong Bahru market has a food court and a wet market.
The food court has hawkers selling mainly traditional singaporean or chinese food.
The wet market has fresh prouduce and one can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, meat etc. There are beautiful cafes around this market and you can spend time lazing or walking around
Varieties of foods and the hawker centre is considered to be clean and bright.. Must come but to be prepared to sweat like nobody. Is 🔥 🥵
My fav stall..so happy that it is getting more business..everything is perfect..illustrated pic costs $4.50..they only start business after 12pm? It dun sell those whole meaty chicken cutlet but the crispy chicken batter is super nice
The long queue is a testament to this delicious bowl of Lor Mee, especially during a rainy day.
For $3 a bowl, Ingredients are simple, just sufficient and well harmonised with the sauce.
Add raw garlic, cilantro and Chili to finish off this simple yet satisfying bowl of goodness.
Lots of choices in hawker good and cheap. Also, great place to buy meat, fruits and vegetables. There are also small shops selling clothes and shoes. Can take mrt now and stop at Havelock station and a short walk.
There are also buses that come straight to this place so it's quite easy to come here.
Been here many times for the flower stall here. The flowers are always fresh and beautiful and cheaper than supermarket ones. They have a large variety too!
One of the best chwee kueh in Singapore! The 2nd floor has a good selection of local hawker food while the 1st floor has a wet market to pick up the freshest produce! There are three flower shops too.
Love the fish ball still! Encounter a new western stall - skirt & dirt, the food was superb. Worth to try 👍🏻
Tow Kwar Pop (豆乾薄)
Tiong Bahru Food Centre
30 Seng Poh Road
#02-06
Singapore 168898
Rare to see in SG, still doing with old school method of grilling the Tow Kwar puffs over charcoal, goes well with the black sweet prawn paste sauce, it's really good ... Fantastic 👍🏻
A go to place for breakfast & lunch if you happen to be around the area. A good hawker food range and prices are reasonable.
Lor mee, cheng teng, carrot cake and bak chor mee.. A lot of good food here.
Chicken rice is good and it’s cheap! Ordered 4 dollars one, served a lot chicken, Yummy!
There are many Fishball Noodle stalls in Singapore, though it is getting hard to find hand-made fishballs already due to commercialisation.. you can find here. There are others delicious foods as well. Carrot cakes, wan ton mee, mee poh, nice fish porriage.etc..and more.
$3.50 per bowl, not bad , v yummy 😋
Good plate of kuay teow. There was no queue when I went, Saturday weekend a few weeks ago. Nice smoky taste and just nice combination of a biy sweet and salty.
Indulge yourself in this delicious place! One of the best hawker center in Singapore with its famous rice cakes
Loads of food. But too bad 60% of hawkers not open when i go at 10am. But still many of local favourites to choose from.
nice place to know about hawker culture. The dessert called 甜甜园 there is really nice!
I often go for a walk
If you go by car, you can park at the rooftop parking lot, but it is always full, so it is better for the driver to wait in the car until a space becomes available.
I bought pork belly, fruit, and fish.
The fruit was expensive, and the pork belly was very foamy.
I think the fish is okay
There is also Tiong Bahru Bakery main branch nearby.
Good atmosphere when taking a walk
The market sells many things on the ground floor, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dried goods, flowers, clothes, household appliances, upstairs food court with many delicious foods. Being near the market is really nice😻😻😻
It is a relatively large food court in Singapore. It has various types of food. There are also many famous restaurants with queues recommended by Michelin Bib Gourmand. You can eat all kinds of food with a small amount of money. Among them, Fujian Fried Prawn Noodles, Shui Kueh, Chicken Rice, Barbecued Pork, and Pork Soup are all the delicacies waiting in line.
The market is emptier than 3 years ago. The laksa noodle shop I used to eat at has closed, so I'm a bit sad. I often eat chicken rice, vermicelli, and spicy beef noodles, plus the xiao long bao is also quite delicious, priced at 5 dollars for 8 pieces to fill me up. Prices here are affordable.
On Seng Poh Road near New Cape Inn hotel, there is a hallway hanging with red lanterns. At night (late at night) when there are few people out to take pictures, it's a bit cool. Beautiful bag.
The first floor has fresh food and the second floor is a hawker.
Both are hygienic, cheap and good.
A gem of a place to celebrate our local delights, at such affordable prices. Only Ls would be the queues for good things, and occasional "cash only".
