Reviews of [CLOSED] The Projector at Cineleisure
The collaboration of a mainstream cinema company with a local independent hip-entertainment business is strategic genius as having two different demographics in one operational building allows more footfall of audience to visit the venue to either watch a blockbuster or simply sit through an old historical melodramatic show.
I have to admit that the venue may not be a big hit like it used to be when Cathay had its Orchard hub buzzing with a plethora of movie offerings including their premium products. However, those moviegoers who adore a quiet environment in the bustling city lifestyle, would find this gem a great amazing getaway from the crowd.
No Spoilers Bar & Dining, Cineleisure: Post-movie birthday dine that was several notches down the scale of posh, appreciated after the past few weeks of a string of haute birthday dines. The retro makeover and takeover by Projector was charming and exciting. No frills meets neon punk, the kickback dining area is minuscule - 4 dining tables to be exact. Meanwhile, the orbit of seats outside is a lot more casual, with a different menu offering movie snacks and pizzas, wings and the maintstream items. I was chuffed for kickback, mixed in with irreverent charm. We had gado gado - which was a simple execution but the peanut sauce tasted rich. Calamari was decent - nothing outstanding. Snapper was head turning - sitting on a bed of mash, dressed with greens and avocado smash. Flavours swirled interestingly together, creating an uplifting symphony but the snapper ran foul. It tasted like it has gone off, perhaps it was out of the fridge for a while. I left it untouched and the sent word to the kitchen. First the chef proffered an outrageous theory - snappers taste like that. As a pescatarian, I feel like a blackbelter of fish or sorts so I had a word with him after. He was apologetic. We had lovely service from our waiter - a young Chinese chap who presented a no-frills cake nesting a side of vanilla ice cream. After weeks of decadence, I actually quite like the low-key affair. I really do want to return. I thought there were some quirks here but the snapper episode is one foul setback. #eatstylishtravelstylish
** Super cold, make sure you bring a jacket or jumper **
Beautiful cinema with interesting options for food and drinks - we had a pint of ipa from a craft brewer ($12) and a scoop of vanilla ice cream from a New Zealand brand ($4) which was pretty good. The decor is quirky and a bit retro but the majestic room was modern with comfortable seats and good legroom. Regular tickets are $15 and if you purchase them online there is an extra fee of $1.5 (overall).
The Akira Kurosawa showcase was excellent! Great cinema - keep it alive by supporting it!
Spoiled for choice in food options! All can go into the theatre with you!
Beer, burgers, Poutine! Poutine!!
very generous portions! I skipped dinner after my fried chicken!
and the funniest pre-movie announcements! watch out for the Turkish skywalker!
Pretty artsy place in town area
Went for DJ anikura event on Jul 2024. Nice place for events, good atmosphere, quite spacy, and nice sound system.
Had lost an item during event and staff was helpful to check and pass me back the item.
The coolest movie theater in Orchard.
Rooms are very bright while the show is going on. Ambience was great and food was good in the lobby! Sound is not great
Wonderful place! Went there for a club event, the space was good and they adjusted it well for the event! A little bit inaccessible due to the slow lift!
Movie was ok but the popcorn was really too bland and drink was extremely tiny (barely taller than the cupholder) for a $10 combo
We came here to try out "Savour Cinema: The Menu" - a really fun, premium experience. The Projector knows how to create a unique and cheeky cinematic experience, and their new venue does not disappoint.
The Projector at Cineleisure is undeniably Singapore's premier arthouse cinema (standing out not just due to the limited competition in the city). The film selection is appealing, although in my opinion it still focuses a little too much on the average film festival fare, and more emphasis could be placed on interesting retrospectives or exciting discoveries, although there are certainly efforts in that direction. More screenings with an accompanying programme (introductions, discussions, analyses, etc.) would also be desirable, as is the case in other arthouse cinemas.
The facilities are top-notch, the seats more comfortable than is permissible for an arthouse theatre.
My biggest criticism, though, is this: the screens are really WAY too dark. I know saving electricity is a valid concern, but you could easily save energy by turning down the air conditioning (usually set too cold), instead of turning it down on the cornerstone of a movie theatre, the screen. If theatres showed films at the right brightness, people would be surprised at how great films can look, and cinemas would have a lot more visitors.
Comfortable chairs and incredible legroom. The cinema was great and the food being served outside was affordable too.
The vibes are great and is definitely not like your standard run-of-the-mill cinema. It has a very chill ambiance at the entrance with the F&B counter being more like an actual bar.
Alcohol is served here along with bar food. You are also allowed to bring F&B from outside in.
Superb cinema, honestly. Great atmosphere. Nice people.
Great selection of foreign films. Unfortunate that they have to close.
Brings back lots of memories.... Though they warn it can be very cold due to central ac, Yangtze which I was in wasn't at all. The slighty musty but very comfy upholstered seating reminds one of the place's heritage....
Huge seating area and nice popcorn.
So clean!!! Love the new cinema
Super nice vibe, where culture and alternate culture are finally vibrant again in the central area of Singapore.
Prashant and the teams for their hard work in bringing energy into Singapore.
Great vibe and great service. Good to go to a theatre with a bit of character.
Always a really fun time at a Projector!
Love the setup, love the movies (especially when they show the classics)!
Chill vibe, nice bar and of course, banger cinema halls
