Reviews of Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Laksa
Our favourite claypot laksa. Thick, fragrant laksa broth that is both creamy and full of flavor. It's one of those places that keeps you coming back for more, always delivering the same level of quality and taste. Definitely a must-try!
Looks like someone just wrote an eloquent and glowing review of this place not too long ago. I won't parrot what has already been said, but chime in with my quick thoughts. What do I think of this laksa? I think it's good, but not worth those long queues you see during peak hours. I wouldn't queue 15 minutes+ for this.
What makes this laksa stand out is the broth, I feel like they are using real coconut here instead of the packet type, and that is what makes it stand out among the other mediocre laksa broths around. The balance of the flavours is also really good, though I would stop short of calling it incredible.
Does it make a difference if you have this in a claypot or non claypot? I'm not sure, maybe it is a placebo effect. I ordered the claypot version and I don't get any wok hei or anything different. The non-claypot version is $5.50 and claypot version is $6.00 (which btw is not exactly cheap).
I observed the uncle preparing and it seems that there is the additional step of putting the ingredients in a claypot and then heating it up as opposed to just scooping hot soup + ingredients straight into a bowl, which takes seconds I'm sure.
From observation (I purposely sat at the table just outside the stall to eat my laksa so that I can observe), it looks like the queues form because they are very, almost painfully, slow in preparing the laksa on weekdays especially when people order the claypot version.
My verdict is that this is a decent bowl of laksa, but not worth queuing or travelling for. I slurped up the very nice soup even if the ingredients were rather miserly and the price isn't that cheap. Barely any hum for the $6 bowl. I actually prefer the laksa in Queensway Shopping center just across the road (the one that doesn't have prawns). There is something to be said about having laksa in Aircon, it just elevates the laksa experience somehow.
Two size, small or large. I ordered a large bowl of laksa. Claypot laksa only available on weekday. Public holiday and weekend no Claypot, just laksa. What a shame. However the laksa still 👍🏻. The laksa gravy gao, gao (thick) and very rich. Taste - a good balance of coconut, sweetness, saltiness and chilli. The laksa gravy concoction was the star here, and mixed with the smooth and slurpy thick bee hoon, chicken meat, fish cake, sea hum (cockle), tao pok a very tasty, enjoyable and satisfying laksa. Some famous laksa I tried, taste was bland, just salty. Others coconut taste overwhelmed the laksa gravy, or gravy filled with too much minced bit hae bee, and lastly too oily. Want a taste of great laksa? Depot road laksa won’t go wrong. Btw, come early, I was told by noon time sold out.
friendlier version of the local laksa with less heat and a more coconuty base.
ingredients okay individually, pairs well with the broth. would be better if prawns were offered instead of chicken breast strips but meal was nonetheless enjoyable.
portion size is worth the price paid, will be back when in the area.
Heard much rave and decided to give it a try. Overall was ok, honestly it’s tasty but still the flavours don’t linger on the palates and give a flat/ diluted mouthful finish. Overall, I will go to get my laksa craving fixed but won’t specifically travel there just for it.
The Laksa gravy at this MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Laksa is especially thick and rich, it is super “lemak” as a large spoonful of thick Laksa paste is added on top the serving. It has been so good that it has maintained its listing on MICHELIN every year since 2016.
The delicious Laksa comes with shrimps and chicken; and priced from $4.00 for a small bowl. Expect a 15-30 minute queue, longer on weekends.
Over the years, some other good Laksa stalls have come to challenge what this used to be the best Claypot Laksa in town. Notice they have dropped the “claypot” as it is no longer served in claypots although that was where it made its reputation.
Laksa coconut taste is strong. Not spicy. Ordered the medium portion $5.50 not too big. No claypot on week ends.
4.5/5 star Laksa. A bit on the spicy side. Thick curry rather than soupy. Noodles were not cut. Very sparing shredded chicken portion. Don't think they give more ingredients if you order no-cockles.
Weekends they don't serve claypot Laksa.
One of my favourite places to have food in Singapore. The queue is quite long so be prepared to wait but - in my view - the wait is definitely worth it. Do spend a little more to get more 'hum' or 'taupok' or 'fish cake' and get the large one because the standard portion is quite small. Rich, creamy, smooth and slightly spicy - this is highly highly recommended! Price is a little steep for hawker fare, than again, you could head to a restaurant with air conditioning and servers that would charge you double what they charge here!
Ordered on Grab. $6 per bowl. Portion is very small. Very little noodle and gravy. Few thin strips of fish cake and 2 to 3 piece shredded chicken and maybe 2 or 3 see hum. When It came I had thought the gravy had spilt but I realised it was a calculated portion to match the little noodles.
Tastes good. But should really be more generous for this price la.
Pretty good laksa. Very spicy and the scorching clay pot makes the experience even more heated. Portions are ok. Lots of sauce. Not enough toppings to noodle ratio. Definitely tasty for spicy fans.
Taste abit different from the first time I tried months back. Is good but not as good a last time. Thick laksa gravy is very additive. Laksa is heat up in claypot. The boss said that he use generous amount of freshly squeezed coconut milk for extra richness. Spicy food lover can add their shiok belachan.
It’s been on the Michelin’s bib gourmand list every year ever since the first year they incorporated it in Singapore (2016). Hardcore fans would remember it to be very much tastier (bear in mind that the Hawkers are elderly in age now so standards might had dropped from their prime) nonetheless, still a very savoury bowl of claypot laksa which is hard to come by these days.
Delicious spicy and hearty laksa. Tried with the thick bee hoon (recommended) and with extra tau pok. Affordable with a large bowl at only $6 and prawns were super fresh!
Laksa not bad, esp the thick paste they added on top of the soup, flavorful. Love the laksa leaf scent so much.
Came here ard 3.30pm & not crowded. There's a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award on the shelf. Taste good though. The gravy is so little. Overall, not bad.
Thick gravy, ingredients include shredded chicken. The hum is tiny and about 3 only. Don’t expect big crunchy ones. Not something that I will die for and come again. Happen to be nearby. One Star Michelin. Hmm.
A medium size bowl of laksa at $5.50 gets you 4 small fresh cockles, 5 slices of fish cake, shredded chicken and 4-5 sticks bean curd. The gravy is good so I drank a bit of it.
Hardly any queue around 11am. Stall holder is friendly.
What I love is the chili, definitely home made. Smooth, goes beautifully with the noodles.
Authentic Singapore Laksa in a Claypot. Yummy with cockles that you would finish the gravy. Expect long queue.
Ordered a large one $6.50 to share with my wife. Both of us find it nice and delicious and uniquely to see a layer of thick gravy on top of the laksa. For the large size, you definitely get more ingredients (prawns, sliced fish cake and hums) than the smaller size (read from other reviewers that they got only 2 hums).
Of course want hums because it costs $3 more to add them! I heard the laksa used to be served in a claypot. Probably easier and more economical to use plastic bowls instead.
Overall I think it’s still quite delectable.
Never try, never know how it tastes like.
The laksa was delicious, lemak as it is easy to taste the coconut in the soup, which was rich and fragrant.
Weekday lunch queue isn't so bad, or maybe it was luck. The heat from the claypot is perfect. Soup is superb.
Love the claypot laksa here!!! Broth was thick and flavourful. Must add white beehoon to make the meal complete. Generous with the hums!
Whatever reason it is.. Without the Claypot seriously change the entire feel. This Laksa I used to rate no.1 in Singapore. If you are coming for the first time, you won't understand how those people used to enjoy this Laksa with Claypot. To me.. The entire taste is totally gone without Claypot. I hope owner see this review. Please get your Claypot back if not you going to suffer. Feel lucky when people like us voice out. Those quiet people will just not come back for your food. By the way, the long queue is no longer there even during busy lunch peak. It's really time to reflect a bit boss.
Very creamy and authentic taste! Small bowl at $4.50 is considered pricey for the little amounts of ingredients (taupok, fishcake, shredded chicken, 1 tiny prawn).
Will be heartwarming on a cool weather, however be prepared to wait for a while for your bowl to be freshly prepared.
Good price. Good service. Must try. May be crowded in lunch time.
Came for a takeaway and service was extremely slow.
There doesn't seem to be anything really special about the laksa. The gravy just isn't watery like most shops but taste wise there was nothing to rave about.
Portions were underwhelming for the sizes offered and the 3 sizes feel like they were all the same.
Pretty ok with the laksa nicely balanced between viscosity, aroma & spiciness. Though somewhat disappointed by it not served in claypot, maybe part of the reason for the missing of long queue during peak lunch hour...
to everyone who thinks that my laksa is tasty and yummy, thank you for supporting and appreciating my laksa, for that I am grateful. but for the minority of you who claim that my laksa is not cooked in a Claypot but served in a Claypot, your assumption is wrong. I humbly cook my laksa in a Claypot over a flame, and when it is ready, it is served to you still, in the same Claypot. I hope this clarifies things, and that there will not be anymore false assumptions. however, you may still comment and write reviews about your honest opinions and I will try my best to improve. thank you again to everyone again.
I like the use of claypot because it keeps the soup warm. So you can take your time to enjoy the laksa. The ingredients are ample and complements the laksa very well. Overall the quality and taste is as good as it can possibly get outside. I have tasted better but that's because it was home-made.
The owners are not in a hurry to get things done, so you can see the leisurely pace they go at. And it shows because the queue gets long very quickly (i wonder if its on purpose).
Because the opening times are pretty short by hawker stall standards, the stall is difficult to access if you are working and not in the area. And only one of the weekend days is open.
Does it merit a specific planning for a trip all the down? Not necessarily. But if you can plan a Ikea dropby, with some snacking from the freshly baked confectionery nearby. It might be an enjoyable afternoon.
good laksa but the cost of ingredients went up so the amount of ingredients in a small bowl is paltry. 2 slices fish cake, 2 cockles smaller than 5 cent coin, taupok and beansprouts sprinkling.
A stall I always went since young, have patronized this store for almost 20 years, once you have tried this once, you will never be able to taste other versions of laksa the same way after
It's been a long time since I eat here. Just realise they no longer serve it in Claypot. Queue for very long, the queue was not so long but the preparations takes very long which I don't understand why since they no longer serve in claypot. Quite disappointing, lack flavours, a far cry from the past.
The laksa is on average. And definitely NOT worth the long waiting time
I go there multiple times every trip to Singapore. Best laksa in Singapore in my opinion. Been eating there for over 14 years.
Super long q cos slow, claypot is a gimmick lah, portion small, gravy too coconuty, overpowered the laksa rempah
Pros: Thick gravy soup.
Cons: Not sure what's the purpose of the claypot.
Different folk different strokes.
Que is long even off-peak hours. However it doesn't appeals to me. Wait can be 30mins up
Pricy but good ~ cannot find another with similar viscus kind of gravy.
Laksa is fragrant and not so spicy.
It was alright. Tried it for the novelty. Go early!
The boiling thick gravy makes it hard to resist! Remember to buy from them!
Good rich flavour, creamy but not overpowering.
Nice soup
TOP 3 Laksa in SG
Nice clay pot laksa.
Excellent rich taste
Eat while mixing the soup with a strong coconut flavor and the seafood paste. It's piping hot and delicious. In the past, it was served in a claypot, but now it's usually served in a bowl. Although it has disappeared from the store's name, there are still remnants of it in the storefront. The menu is clean and only laksa. You can choose from $4-6.
A store with a lot of Bib Gourmand appeal.
It's called clay pot laksa.
For some reason, it is not served in a clay pot. why?
Laksa tastes normal and delicious
You will be asked if you want to add shellfish.
I think it's better to include it.
328 Laksa and Marine Parade Laksa
It's about medium thick.
The price is cheap. If the line is short.
Inside Alexandra Village Food Centre. Spicy coffee. The ingredients are average, but the soup base is unique. It has spiciness, texture and lingering aroma. It's a pity that I am used to eating slightly spicy food. The shopkeeper will ask if he wants to put clams in. Some customers may not like clams. Because it is clay pot coffee, it is blanched. After the clams are put in for too long, they will shrink and become harder. It is best to eat the clams first.
