Reviews of Hakka Thunder Tea Rice
Tasty flavorful thunder tea rice, the accompanying broth is served separately and is very rich. What I did was to dump the entire bowl of broth into the ingredients and you get a mesh of salty savoury sweet and crunchy rice with broth. Delicious!
The Thunder Tea Rice is pretty good but not worth the long long wait in the queue. I waited almost an hour from 11am today . They are definitely short handed. They have lots of delivery orders and have dedicated one staff out of four to prepare food for the delivery pickup. Customers in the queue are accorded second priority 😡 To make it worse they allow some customers they know to jump queue!
I suggest you don’t bother to eat there unless you have plenty of time and patience and you are not hungry.
My most favorite leicha (tea rice) place in Singapore. Delicious leicha and great variety of yong tau fu to accompany the leicha. Super affordable price and great service too! The queue is always long here but they're well staffed and you never have to queue for too long. Highly recommend ❤️💯
Having Hakka descent, the leicha rice (brown or white) is legit one of the two I'd recommend, the other being in Toa Payoh. This shop, however, also sells Hakka fried Yong Tau Fu which is deeply savoury. These come in various forms at $1.20 per portion (mushrooms 2 pieces per portion).
The serving portion is generous and affordable, and the stall owners are very affable and service-oriented. Would definitely recommend.
The yongtaufoo is really really good. There's a reason why it's $1.20 per piece. Handmade on the spot and full of flavor and ingredients (fish and meat paste). The queue is worth it!
My colleague got the thunder tea rice which is very popular and good as well, though I didn't try.
This stall is popular and has a queue although I find that the line/wait time is mainly due to serving speed. The employees are very friendly and look busy but not sure why, serving speed is slow although most of the food has already been prepared ahead of time. The lei cha is ok but there is the option to add on a good variety of fried yong tau fu which is handmade by the stall. You can also order yong tau fu ($1.20 per piece) on its own. Personally did not think it was worth the wait but for those of you who like fried yong tau fu, it may be worth trying!
Travelled all the way to 客家佬擂茶 at Tanglin Halt Food Center to satisfy my Hakka yong tau foo cravings! We ended up queuing for about 30 minutes, but then and again, good things are worth the wait amirite? 😆
Even though priced at 90 cents, each piece of hand-made yong tau foo is generously portioned and freshly fried in small batches. Our favourite is the stuffed eggplant, with the soft texture held by the meat/fish paste filling. The filling is also well-seasoned, with a touch of umami from the dried sole powder. Bb's parents also loved the fried beancurd skin- this golden brown crispy goodness stuffed with a copious amount of meat filling yields a satisfying crunch with every bite! Recommend dipping into their chilli sauce for an extra fiery punch.
Best thunder tea rice and Hakka Yong tau foo! Portion was good, the mix of flavors of both the ytf and thunder tea rice were excellent
Definitely will visit their new stall at Margaret drive food centre
Yummy lei cha rice ($5) found here! (Think prices have increased after they moved here from Tanglin halt). Glad that they provide ample lei cha soup to go along. Yong taufoo at $1.20 per piece goes well especially when paired with their chilli sauce. Ordered the bitter gourd, brinjal and taupok. Nice although a little oily.
Queue moved rather slowly though; around 30min for a queue of around 12-14 pax in front.
Went at 1.30pm still have a short queue, service was lovely and friendly. Nice leicha, $5 can choose either white or brown rice. Ytf was sold at $1.20 per piece, very tasty meatball. Will return!
It is the best Hakka Thunder Tea I ever had. You can choose plain rice or brown rice with additional fifty cents. The thunder tea is a mixed of herbs tea. It is vegetarian and healthy.
Weekend late morning queue less than 5min. Queue never stop throughout lunch. Friendly staffs. Food wise, just like normal rice that is slightly wetter with an assortment of diced greens and nuts. Would prefer something more flavourful, or some meat for that price. Not everyone's cup of tea. Yong toufu wise, though fried, not crispy. Chilli is salty, not spicy. PayNow acceptable.
My first time trying thunder tea rice! And this blew me away. I had mine in brown rice option ($4). The vegetables included are in perfect harmony after mixing in. The tea soup has a nutty taste, slightly heavy for me but goes well with the rice. Love the Yong Tau Foo options that you can add in to your rice. Recommended!
Update in 2023: Moved to Margaret Drive Hawker Center. Food is still good 👍🏻
Yummy leicha in pretty bowl. What's more, it's just $3.50!
Gotta be patient though, queue move a bit slow
Love every single ingredients given in a bowl. Highly recommend the fried tau pok! Yong tau fu is very delicious too.
This is my favourite leicha in SIngapore. Every single ingredient is prepared meticulously and cooked to perfection- super fragrant and vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The standard is very consistent with each and every visit. The YTF items are a must order especially the mushroom and eggplant. Just have to go down early to queue as the queue during peak hours is extremely long
Thunder Tea Rice done right. Be prepared for very long queues (about 1 hour) as there are a lot of fans willing to wait for their fare. Nostalgic feel to this place.... sad that it'll be torn down soon.
I queued for 45 mins to gobble this down in 5. Where this bowl was meant to be fresh - it delivered. Where it was meant to be crispy - it snapped. The brown rice was quality, you can tell by how the grains looked. Thunder tea in its peak form. And great service ❤️
Delicious Hakka thunder tea rice and yong tau foo by a very friendly couple inside Tanglin Halt Food Centre. The servings are large. This costs $12.80 and is enough for two people. However, be prepared to wait for more than 30 mins.
[Update: take note that it is close from 4 Dec 2029 to 15 Feb 2021.]
LeiCha, healthy, not purely veggie, choice of white rice or brown rice. Niang Toufu also very nice. Can scan QR code to pay.
We tried the tea rice for the first time - lovely but not our thing. Tea rice is densedly packed with diced veggies, tofu and has ikan bills. Very good blend and enjoyable for me with chilli. The Yong Tau Foo is simply the best we've had. Even though all items are fried @$1.20 per piece, it's value for money. Pieces are reasonably big. Every bite is so satisfying. Very light even though all items are deep fried. Good taste - not overly sweet or salty but just right. Excellent.
Staff are courteous and even returned me 20 cents when we paid with CDC vouchers. Will definitely want to have the Yong Tau Foo again,. Simply yummy.
Was strong recommended this dish from two friends and happened we were around that area, thus decided to check it out. It was a long queue at this stall. We ordered dine in as well as tabao for our family members too. Personally, I liked the soup to be added to the rice and it tasted delicious with that. Will come to eat if happen to be around the area.
Each component of the thunder rice were cooked with each distinct flavour. I tried without mixing the bowl up. 4-5 different flavours. And when you mix it up, it's another feeling where all the flavours are bursting in the mouth.
Very good. Must try
Ordered the Hakka Thunder Tea Rice.
Highly recommend to request for thicker tea saucing, which blend really well together with their taokwa and the other stuffed meat fritter ( Can’t really remember what’s that called )
Mayonnaise can be requested as well which gives the tea flavour a unique combination, making the saucing a little creamy and sweet. Which makes the overall dish very interesting and unique. ( I feel this is their plus point; especially with their signature tea paste/soup )
If you are not a fan of mayonnaise, request it on the side.
Other overall ingredients combined give it a very good texture in the dish. Beautifully curated and highly recommend anyone to try.
I feel is one of the best Hakka Thunder Tea Rice I ever eaten in SG
One of the best if not the best in Singapore for their Hakka Thunder Tea Rice, very generous with the portions of vegetables and tofu etc. The nutty, green herb concoction is also very rich and creamy. They also sells Hakka Yong Tau Foo to complement their rice. Fillings are very tasty and full to the brim. Value for your money. I'm already a regular and loyal customer.
Very good dish. Taste authentic and is tasty even though I ordered brown rice.
They have moved from tanglin halt market to upper level of the new Margaret drive hawker centre . Prices have also "moved up" though. See the older pics on google for comparison.
Extremely flavourful bowl of Hakka Thunder Tea. Ingredients and taste is authentic. For $5, one can truly enjoy a sumptuous meal that’s really hard to replicate anywhere else.
There is so much love in the food here you can taste it! Everything is made carefully and the food is fried in small batches to ensure freshness. My absolute favorite brown rice thunder tea rice paired with heavenly YTF. Don’t forget the chili that goes excellently well with it! Been eating this for 5 years and counting (:
Have been looking for an authentic Hakka Thunder Tea Rice at reasonable pricing, at last found it Easy to find, google the map. For normal rice $3.50 and with brown rice $4!!! Yong Tau Foo at 90¢ also available.Their Hakka pig trotter @$7.50. The market is going to dismantle end October, so try it out before they moved.
Great food.
One of great food in Singapore.
Must eat both Yongtofu , thunder tea rice.
I am impressed dry type Yongtofu.
Really like tea rice. I like Japanese tea rice, but here is more deluxe taste than Japanese one..
Only trouble , need to wait with long queue….
Worth wait.
TL;DR: I used to shame people who eat Thunder Tea Rice until I was converted by this stall.
As someone who likes flavors and despise tasteless food TTR was the enemy of my soul until the faithful day when I tried the one here. Granted I had the Yong Tau Foo to tide me through but trust me it is flavortown all up in the bowl of green mess.
For the uninitiated don’t try to mix the green potion with your rice - have it separately at the end of your meal and you’ll be just fine.
They say every Thunder tea rice recipe is different, because each family closely guards their own recipes. I like their recipe; the mix of ingredients is just nice for me, I feel its nutritious, and the taste of the tea blends it all quite nicely. 😜
Food is excellent and would give it a 5/5 if not for the awfully slow service. Considering lei cha consists of pre-prepared ingredients, the pace at which they serve their customers is appalling, no urgency whatsoever even if you’ve been queueing for over an hour. They take their time, and don’t expect them to improve anytime soon as business is booming for them.
A little stingy on the yong tau foo sweet sauce as well, they’ve told me I had to order >3 pieces to get the sauce. 😕
Thunder Tea rice was great. The Yong Tau Foo was even better! The accompanying soup was a little strong for me but my wife loves it. Overall awesome!
First visit and I’m bowled over! Best thunder tea rice I’ve tasted.. the Hakka YTF is very yummy and not to be missed. Sorry didn’t take pictures, couldn’t wait to tuck in. Must visit again!
Very yumz. Big portion. Very long waiting time. At least 30 to 45 min, depending on the length of q. The side dishes of the lei cha is very fragrant. The tea soup is fragrant but has an acquired taste. I prefer to eat the rice with the side dishes n a few tiny spoonfuls of the tea soup. Try the ur hakka ytf. It's deep fried n yummy. Try the chillies, the meatball n the brinjal.
I m a big fan of lei cha. Have tried many different stalls and so far NO ONE can beat this 客家佬。 this one really super nice and they have premium YTF at an affordable price . 🤤🤤🤤
Healthy traditionally Hakka food. The special Hakka mint tea provide me a nostalgic experience. Highly recommended but be prepared to wait
There was a long queue but honestly well worth the wait. It's absolutely delicious
If you ever tried thunder tea from this stall, it sets the bar that you would likely not like any others. I am a real picky eater and this is THE thundertea you ought to try. Thumbs up.
best hakka tea rice I've ever eaten. long queue everyday. tastes nice yet not sinful
Great authentic Thunder Tea Rice with Niang Dou Fu as a worthy add-on! Highly recommended!
Friendly and polite customer service from aunt and the young lady. Great yong tau hu here.
Brown rice option available.
Yummy and one of the best .👍👍👍👍
I have tried Lei Cha here and it's good. Worth a try
Very clean and nice. Stall operator very friendly.
Not open at 10.30am today.
Long queue but worth it!
It was the most delicious Thunder Tea Rice I've ever had! The vegetables were well seasoned and the crunchy small fish was the best. Even though I don't usually like green tea, I enjoyed it on its own without adding it to the rice because I liked the refreshing taste that wasn't too strong. I waited over 30 minutes with 5 people in line, so I think you should be prepared for a long wait even if there aren't many people in line.
Best Thunder Tea Rice I've ever had! Vegetables were tasty, and crunchy small fish was awesome. Usually I do not like "tea" so much, but I enjoyed their tea so much. Only 5 people were ahead of me, but I have waited more than 30 min...Be prepare Q. But worth waiting!
I am a regular customer! The Yong Tau Foo is delicious and the real deal.
The biggest drawback is that you have to queue up every day.
Every time I pass by and see few people, I quickly line up...
I had Thunder Tea Rice for eat-in and Yong Tofu for take-out.
Thunder Tea Rice has little flavor and is easy to eat even for beginners. It seems Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has also visited, and there was a photo of him on display.
The wait staff were also cheerful and friendly, which was wonderful.
The stuffing of Yong Tau Foo is full, and the tofu is processed and tastes very fragrant!
Not everyone can accept the taste of Lei Cha. If you don’t eat Lei Cha, you can also try their Yong Tau Foo and other stuffings, including bitter melon, mushrooms, bean curd, okra, chili, etc.
Their service attitude is also very good, very patient, and the price is very fair 😃
