Reviews of Hill Street Fried Kway Teow
We were here early before 9 am, queue was already 5 pax deep
Q is on the side of the stall facing the street. So when u get there, JOIN THE QUEUE. Please do not crowd in front of the stall as that confuses the stall helper and other new patrons as well
The CKT was well worth the wait! Lots of wok hey and ingredients were fresh. I ordered with extra chilli which was a wee bit too rich on the spicy side
Will definitely order again!
Good stuff!
CKT (Cha Kway Teow or Fried Kuay Teow) is such a staple in Singapore and one can almost certainly find one stall selling CKT in any food centre in Singapore. Here in Chinatown Complex Food Centre, there are numerous stalls selling this dish, each with slightly different expression and flavour so to speak. This stall is one favourite of mine for CKT. And if you see a queue outside of peak hours, it is a sign that the food is good. And it is! There was a queue of about 10 at 2pm and the wait took about 20 mins - which is nothing really compared to the hardwork and skill that goes into the plate of CKT. What I like about the CKT is how the savoury-sweet flavour and wok-hei aroma is fully infused into the noodle. For $4, there is a generous amount of lap cheong, plump cockles and crispy pork lard. What is also amazing is that it is served in a proper plate and not styrofoam plate used commonly.
Every plate was individually fried, not overly greasy and full of wokhei. Definitely one of the best in singapore. 6th in line and 30mins wait. Nuff said.
Updated:
Decided to give it another shot. Consistent 45min for a $4 plate.
Pros
Taste of ckw. It actually has taste now when erm it is hot. It was pretty good.
Varieties of ingredients. Those add dimensions into the taste. But one of the cockles seems too fresh.
Cons
Pork lard. One of worst pork lard I had not crispy one.
Soggy mee. No Al dente bit to it.
Nevertheless it was still enjoyable when consumed hot
Old review
Queued 45min for a small plate of ckt at $4.
Not sure if it is because I was sitting at a very windy seat, ckt doesn't feels very hot. But regardless it is actually a bit tasteless by itself. Texture wise there also wasn't much bite to it. Luckily it was supported by lap Chong, cockles and pork lard. So all the ingredients actually make it savory so it was okay.
Not worth the queue.
Always a long queue, especially during lunch time.
The Fried Kway Teow was delicious and not too oily.
Shiok!!!
Chinatown - Smith St Market
I just learnt that there were 2 char kway teow stalls in hill street, after all, I am not that old, not old enough to be queuing for this char kway teow. In fact, I was the youngest in the queue until a young couple came along. I waited 30mins for my turn. When the uncle fries the kway teow, he does so with a small spatula, the kind that very old hawkers use. Quite a bit of water goes into the frying. A few slices of lap cheong, one egg, bean spouts and chives, then the bloody water of cockles went in. The kway teow is then placed onto the cockles. The old school way of doing it. When I noticed that not all plates had the yummy lard, I specifically asked for it. It’s a very good char kway teow, it does not hit you immediately, not like the eggy Outram at Honglim, the wok hei is also not like the one in Jalan Berseh, the flavor not as strong as AMK central, but it’s the very fact that the sweet sauce does not taste prominent, the subtle flavors of other stuff comes in. When you mixed in the pork lard, the lard covers the rest of the taste. Not a very oily version as well. So my verdict is that I will eat it again! Is it legendary? Not for me at least, but I am sure it is for all the uncles and aunts. Is it worth checking out? Yes definitely. In fact, I am sure if I eat it often enough, it may become one of my favorites. Just a reminder, the $1.50 kopi directly behind may be aromatic but the taste need not be better than your usual Kopitiam kopi. Lol
Pretty good CKT
Uncle cooked aunty take orders.
Very accommodating, I asked for no garlic
Absolutely glorious plate of Fried Kway Teow. Would definitely visit more if I didn't stay so far away! Queue gets a bit long but waiting time is worth it - uncle fries his noodles one plate at a time. Don't think anyone will inherit his stall in future, enjoy it while it lasts!
2025 review again, my favourite stall highly recommend this stall. The operator are old fast fast go and try. They open only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday please take note. It tastes very classic and doesn't allow you to add egg or ham, but more 猪油渣和豆芽 ok.
Oh wow..this version knocks my socks off completely..the wok hei was omni-present in every bite I took. Savory-sweet with blasts of umami in between,it was so addictive that i wish i could order 2nds..alas,the stall closed after i finished my last few bites.
Oh and also the fried lard pieces were oh-so-crispy and addictive,i wish there was more..
Would i go back for more? Hell yeah, without a shadow of a doubt!
My Rating: 9.3/10
$5 for Big portion Char Kway Teow
Wok hey was quite minimal. It was still pretty decent considering the amount of ingredients added.
Local singapore taste. Black soy with sweet taste.
One of the hawker gems that we should savour as much as possible before this uncle retires.
Sinfully delicious, classic char kway teow. More savoury than sweet, nice firm bite to the noodles. Generous with not only the crispy pork lard but the lard oil as well, so the large portion might give you a food concussion toward the end. You’ll probably think it’s worth it though.
It really is an excellent char kway teow, but be warned the quality is in how fluffy the whole dish is - if you've ever tried to cook char kway teow at home you know how difficult it is to make it fluffy and not sticky - and in how subtle the flavouring is and how all the ingredients come out, including the crispy lard. Don't expect a heavily seasoned sweet and salty dish. I recommend the $5 version - portions are not that big.
A decent plate of Char Kway Teow ; but today's plate was not as tasty as my last visit. This stall uses quite alot of lard too if you prefers them. Today's wait was about
15 minutes with 6 people in front of me.
1st time eating here and loved the ckt. Ckt was expertly fried by an elderly uncle and the wok hei was SHIOKS!!!! The fried pork lard was amazing, you could feel the crunch2 as you enjoy the noodles Aunty kept the stall spick and span. Stall was very clean.
Read about the long qs but we came at 4ish so were in-between peak periods. No q 😊 Will definitely come back for more yummy goodness
Pretty good plate of CKT . Not as special as Hill street ( Bedok ) or Zion Rd .
Nicely done! 🤤 Prefer this slightly over the same name at Bedok. However, still find this slightly lacks of wok hei as compared to Outram Park CKT.
Char Kway Teow was bland, and the characteristic sweet sauce taste of CKW was totally missing. It's not worth the long 20-minute queue.
10-15 minutes waiting , food was good at reasonable price
This is imo the best CKT stall in Chinatown Complex, but coming on a day when they are open is a tricky affair as they are only open some days a week. As one of the two CKT stalls from the defunct Hill St FC and is still helmed by the first-gen owner (the other one is at Bedok South FC), the CKT is skillfully fried and has a strong whiff of wok hei and a good amount of seehum (blood cockles) too 👍 👍
Tried this stall for the first time due to the name is similar to the bedok stall. This stall char kway teow has less bean sprout which some may prefer this cooking. I found this stall is delicious compared to the bedok stall which has deteriorated.
Bump into this stall while trying to look for the Zion Rd CKT who had moved to this hawker ctr recently(albeit temporarily). I do prefer this stall than the supposedly more famous Hill Street CKT at Bedok but Zion Rd CKT still set the bar for me with better wok hei and more zealous dose of pork lard.
Really great food! I had the less spicy version compared to what the locals get. Still tasted very good. Line was a little long but that was expected and worth the wait.
Wait of 25 minutes at most times. Noodles freshly fried till slightly charred.Tasty and not oily.
delicious
It was a very long queue, the first time was good but the second time was average and quite bland. I think it depends on the queue and the taste isn't consistent
Best in SG for me. Only $4/$5 for the loaded ingredients. Uncle and Auntie doing this for 50+ years.
Worth the 30 min wait for one of the best CKT in town.
Fried with lots of dedication - very well fried. Cockles are good.
Nice char keow teow. If eat there would taste much better.
It was a good plate char kway teow…
local style, too wet.
The taste is not bad, it's a shame the filling is very minimal and the portion is also small
Very delicious fried noodles, the quality has remained the same over the years, you have to wait in line
The rice noodles are fried in plates and the heat is just right.
