Reviews of 美人鱼 Mermaid Fish Soup
Chose the stall because the fish dish was $4.80 compared to the next coffee shop which was sliced fish soup with rice for $6.
Had the sliced fish soup porridge at $4.80.
Fish was very fresh. Chewy/bouncy. Soup was clear. Clear until can see that the bowl used is abit yellow. (Stains? Maybe is the design of the bowl)
Definitely will come back. But to takeaway using my container
“Why hasn’t this fish soup gone viral yet?” was my immediate thought upon savouring the first spoonful.
Despite the limited online reviews and unassuming stall front, the rainy weather and a bit of adventurous spirit got me to give it a shot. I opted for the secret menu item, as mentioned in the reviews: Spicy Milk Sliced Fish Soup, upsized fish portion and with added bitter gourd, bringing total to $8.30.
As the sole patron at that moment, the friendly stall owner even extended table service. My order arrived swiftly, and I was immediately struck by the generous portion size. The first bite of the fish slices was mind blowing. They were incredibly fresh, tender, and possessed the ideal texture I'd been seeking. There was no hint of slimmy cornstarch texture, a testament to the cook’s skill. Additionally, they used mani cai instead of the typical lettuce, which is a unique touch.
The spicy milk broth was a pleasant surprise. It evoked the creaminess of tom yum goong without the herbs, and it wasn't like malatang either. This truly original flavour profile was unlike anything I'd tasted before.
As an added convenience, they accept PayNow and CDC vouchers. I can’t wait to come back and try other combination with this broth.
Update: Came back to try knife noodles with the spicy milk broth. The noodles were cooked al dente and paired well the broth. The fish slices were perfectly cooked as well.
My husband and my go-to fish soup stall. Try their hidden spicy milk gao soup (also available in stall apart from grabfood). I like either tung hoon or macaroni to go with it. Fried sides like har cheong gai, ngoh hiang and beancurd roll also available in stall if they can cope! Just ask if keen. It's definitely worth the try. They are also on grabfood so can order delivery if unable to go down.
