Reviews of Bar-A-Thym Restaurant by Francois Mermilliod
For me, the presentation of their dishes and quality is up to my expectation. The price per pax for lunch set is < ~SGD50.00 and I tend to get a complete meal with fully filled stomach.
What surprise me more is the tart appetiser, crispy bottom layer with fresh tomato cutlets and cheese cubes further enhances the texture. Maybe this is because my first time eating this 😅.
Main dishes are great, nothing much to comment.
Tiramisu just normal tiramisu, the only part that drags it down.
Overall happy meal still.
Nice interesting food. Pigeon stuff with foie gras is to die for. Had a special on menu today, French class and it has huge and chewy. Beef tatare was nice to start with while my friend had a raw fish. Opened a bottle of mas de dumas gassac 1988 which was decently priced.
Came here for the executive set lunch which came with a bread course, an entree, a main, dessert and coffee/tea for $48++. Really good value for money and a nice way to enjoy some top French cuisine on a Friday afternoon. Would come again to try the dinner menu.
Came here for valentine's day dinner and 1st time trying out this restaurant. The 1st entree bread with duck rilettes was really good and we were expecting more great to follow. Trout tatare dish was refreshing. The scallop and foie gras that followed were quite good as well you will expect. We ordered the Angus beef Wellington and the lamb rack and beef Wellington was the winner here nicely rusted with perfectly cooked beef. The white choco dessert was really too sweet though and we couldn't finish which is a shame. Service was good and the dishes came without too much waiting in between. Will drop by to try out their usual menu another day.
Updated: We had the $80 Omakase again and was really impressed by the volume and taste of all the dishes. As always, the team put up a really good course! To date I’ve tried the Mussels, Iberico Pork, duck rilette, yellowfin tuna & beef steak. Wines also paired well with the food😀
Service was great and Francois was as always so friendly and willing to answer our questions about the dishes every time! merci beaucoup pour l'hospitalité!
Great food, ambiance and service!
Came back again to try more items! Food was good, as expected. Also included a thumbs up for the items I enjoyed best:
- Homemade Charcuterie Board (Half) 👍🏻
- Fremantle Octopus à la Plancha
Sauté Ratte Potato Red Pepper Coulis & Hazelnuts 👍🏻
- Basket of Heritage Bread
- “First Light” Wagyu Bavette (250g) Ratte Potato, Broccolini, Béarnaise 👍🏻
- Potato & Epoisses Gratin 👍🏻
- Dark Chocolate Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream
- Rhone Valley Domaine Saint Claire Crozes-Hermitage 2018
Great restaurant located in Chinatown of Singapore, excellent frech food, french wines and delicious plates. Is small restaurant but you can feel confortable. Service is good and location very good, near other restaurants and bars and the life area of chinatown bars.
Absolutely loved it!
I had the omakase, which you can taste variety of dishes adjusted to your likes / dislikes.
The dishes are made with love and butter (you will taste a lot of this) so come prepared to eat! We were stuffed even before the main course but I'm glad we finished everything till the end.
Mussels are a must if they are in season (I believe they finishe around early November). But meat dishes were amazing too, we had the lamb, I usually don't like lamb because of they gamey taste and tough texture, but this specific brand (Te mana) had no smell and it was so tender in the mouth. I can say it was the best lamb dish I had, and I don't even like lamb.
The desserts are also phenomenal, so please save room and try them.
If you like fine dining food but in a casual environment, this is for you :)
Always a winner! Honest French food with a touch of class. I don’t want Michelin Starts - I want honest food and this place delivers every time we come. Menu is perfect but don’t forget to ask for daily specials as chef gets what’s in season in France.
Tucked away on a side street off of Club Street is Bar-A-Thym, a subtle yet tastefully appointed French restaurant. This was our first visit. Bar-A-Thym is not the place to come if you are looking for pretentious food, like soup served as a gas in a test-tube, or plates with artistically dribbled sauce drops. Rather, it is like you are in rural France and have stumbled across a country restaurant using the freshest ingredients you've ever tasted. Masterfully prepared dishes seem so simple and delicious, yet there is nothing simple about any of complex flavours you are tasting. The use of herbs is stunning, as well as the quality and blend of ingredients. My pasta had fresh uni on it that was as fresh as anything I've had at Kyubei in Tokyo. The Spanish pork shoulder on mashed potato... so simple yet the flavour was pure bliss. We ordered the omakase - Chef Francois Mermilliod's nod to the subtle Japanese influences and flavours present - and awaited the arrival of each dish with anticipation and excitement. There is a wine pairing available which I will try when I come by taxi on my next visit.
The ambience at Bar-A-Thym is friendly, and you are welcomed whether you are wearing shorts or are dressed for an evening at the opera. In this regard, it really is like being in Paris. The decor is elegant and again without pretension; again, a seamless blend of elegant simplicity with a modern twist. The service was super attentive without being at all intimidating or overly stuffy. Again, friendly and thoroughly professional. And last but not least, I always like an open kitchen. We watched Chef creating his dishes tirelessly and masterfully, a true artist at work.
Had the set lunch. The appetiser and main was great. The dessert did not wow me though.
Service is fantastic!
Delicate authentic french fare that you will love. Start with their charcuterie and make space for dessert. Their mains are impeccable but prepare to be stuffed.
Got the chance to try Bar A Thym out through restaurant week. Great ambience and food, particularly the Beef Ragu pasta here. Service was sincere and it was the small touches that left a great impression (eg providing envelopes for masks during this period, sanitizers etc). Would love to come back and try the other great dishes Chef Francois and team has up their sleeve.
This was a great meal, the chef is innovative a full of suprises.
Very nice place and the staff was great.
However I would suggest to offer a wider offer for wine by glass.
Perfect. Service 🏆Ambient 🏆 The mains gold 🥇 🥇 🥇. Especially the Brevette first light steak. Just perfect.
Good French food and warm friendly service.
This place is amazing, from the food, down to the service, and Francois himself is such a gentleman...poised and polite, with a hint of ruggedness. Must visit!
Had a great lunch Friday (the set lunch is a jolly good deal and excellent food). Then had an even better dinner Saturday night.
The food was some of the best we have had in singapore (and globally). The staff and chef owner were also all terrific - very friendly and helpful. The chef is obviously passionate and cares about what he does.
The restaurant is quite small (which adds to the ambiance) on a tucked away street. Don't be fooled by the name with Bar within in it. This is a top quality restaurant for a special night out.
Many thanks for wonderful food, we will be back very soon! Richard and Poppy
Nice location, great ambience, accomodating staff and excellent food ... BUT my 5 star rating is really for providing great affordable fare. This was my first time to visit and was the selection of my guest, who got to choose the place having won our annual football bet. I arrived 20 minutes early and found we had no reservation but they seated me at a nice table and served me until my guest arrived late. Fortunately my guest is a health nut and does not drink. The best deal was the 3 course lunch set menu at $38. Good variety of entree, main dish and dessert plus you can opt for specialty dishes (lamb, octopus salad) at nominal markups. I suspected the place was a bit to posh for me and would make a major dent in my wallet. Two attractive French ladies arrived early and sat at the next table chatting in the native tongue. When I heard them order bouliabaisse ... one of my all-time favorite dishes, if it prepared well. We both ordered specials ... mine was salmon tartare entree with seabream fish ... exquisite, perfectly prepared and well-presented. The only possible criticism is the staff got a bit overwhelmed ... the place got packed (and we got in without a reservation) and was a little slow to take the order. But it was served quickly and it put us both in a great mood. I sneaked a peak at the wine list. Choice wines but a little outside my budget. The well-heeled should love this place, but I was very grateful to have an outstanding lunch for under $100. When I hit the jackpot I will come back and do it right.
5th time in 2 years. Food and service is consistently top notch and never fails to live up to expectations. Be it an intimate gathering for 2 or a night out with friends, it's always a good choice.
Recommended dishes:
Charcuterie Platter: Especially the Duck Rilettes, Foie Gras and Chicken Liver Mousse)
Morisseau Mussels: Fresh and meaty mussels tossed in their tomato cream sauce is their signature. Slightly spicy, acidic but rich at the same time.
We have the honour of Francois serving us as chef. The Omakase or Chef menu was fantastic. We enjoy almost all the dishes especially the pasta with uni and pork Jaws; the cold appetiser needs a bit of getting used to.
Nice service and atmosphere. However, I felt food were too pricy for the quality.
So we went there couple times and l love the food so much. The chefs and most of the staff were so generous and accommodating with their menu. When things come to the reservation I was so disappointed. They never answer the phone even just said sorry we are fully booked or whatever, but at least answer the phone call more professional. You tried to call them they just hang up on you and repeat over over again for 5 times. When you just want to let them know you need to change the timing. Hopefully the manager will training whoever pick up client call more respectful and professionally .
Chef Francois is always a safe choice for a nice dinner! Really loved raviolini and appetizers
We came here for drinks and dessert. The manager told us it would be free if we didn't like it. I wanted to lie but the apple pie was too good. What a great chance find at the end of the night.
We enjoyed excellent service and a delicious, creative meal set. Put yourself in the competent hands of the people at this restaurant and go for the Omakase Set. You won’t regret it!
Overall decent standard, but nothing was really outstanding. The bread is crusty and tasty. Take note the omakase is only available for min 2 pax and for whole table only.
Had the tempura for starter, barramundi for main, and flan for dessert. Each was exquisitely done. Great set lunch.
Cosy ambience yet elegant french food... lunch sets are priced affordably; if wish to try the food at pocket friendly pricing. Brought my parents and family for lunch.
crabmeat salad was perfect
Uni pasta was very good
Delicious and very generous portions. Bread freshly baked reminds me of home.
Good bistro style French food at decent prices done with sustainable produce.
