Reviews of Box n Sticks @ Kandahar
Chance upon this place and absolutely love this little izakaya. Food selection was great and taste was above par! Beer and sake prices were reasonable too!! Will definitely be back here again soon!
Overall atmosphere is chill and food served is delicious.
The stingray fins and sake clam goes well with beer. The teriyaki corn skewer was one of my favourite too.
* Feedback: The pork skewer is slightly tough but altogether the meal was good.
Place was packed but the staff seated us at a reserved table. Later they moved us to another table when it’s available.
The staff are super attentive and fast. And there’s only 3 waitresses at dinner service.
The food was good too. I personally prefer the regular pork than the black pork because it’s more tender (and cheaper).
I highly recommend the ETHIRE YАКI (Grilled stingray fin). It goes super well with a drink.
First time to visit Boz n Sticks and food was really good. It was really delicious and filling although what I did not like is that the portion is too small for an $18 meal! If this was priced for $15, then it would be a perfect 5 stars! Service charge was also topped at 10% in which we were only served 1 glass of water that me and my wife shared! 😄
We ordered the Chilli Crab Don & Gyu Niku Don and they're terrific but again only if they lowered the price for a small portion.
The place was a bit cozy and dark... i would be honest to say that the photos in Facebook are much better. Table was also a bit dirty when we arrived.
It is a good experience but for $40 for 2 meals and bottle of coke? I would also look at Sushi Tei for an alternative.
Cute small izakaya place with nice kushiyaki. The place looks like an izakaya too.
The main dish I ordered was the Spicy Chicken Don, which comes in either spicy or non-spicy. I requested spicy with less spice but not too sure if my request was reflected in the dish as it was a tad bit spicy for me but was still good.
As for the sides, we ordered Tamago Mentaiyaki, Spicy Aburi Seafood Maki and their Signature Buta Kakuni Bun. The spicy aburi seafood maki is a little spicy but for people who can take some spice would be fine. Their signature buta kakuni bun came with a sort of sweet sauce to have it slightly drizzled onto the bun was great too.
Would be best to make reservations as the size of the store is quite small and by the time we arrive at the place around 8pm would be filled with customers.
In my opinion, the food here is decent for the price point. It hits the spot more or less and I’ve visited on several occasions. I was rather disappointed on my last visit though, as I ordered 2 kushiyaki when they called for last orders. Sadly, they decided to deep fry instead of grill them. I can understand that grilling takes more time and there’s an eagerness to wind down for the night, have the staff meal and go home for some well deserved rest. In which case, better to tell the customer that you have begun cleaning your grill and grilled items are no longer available. Frying un-marinated meat just doesn’t work well and neither does assuming your customers cannot tell the difference.
There is a good Japanese ambience here. Plenty of choice regarding food and sake.
Expect Japanese music 🙂
This is one Izakaya that I repeatedly go back to over the years. It has a rustic and relaxing vibe, and the food is consistently good.
Authentic izakaya right down to the cramped seating. Started off with a refreshing wakame salad. The kushiyaki items are just ok. Our first order of pork skewers were a little tough but much better for the second round. The tsukune which had cartilage bits in it was good and came with a raw egg yolk dip that didn't do much for me. A pity they do not do chicken innards here. I prefer the other cooked food items. Stand out dishes include the creamy tamago mentaiyaki, melt in your mouth buta kakuni buns and saba shioyaki which was cooked perfectly. Reasonable prices and good portion sizes. After payment, you get a chance at the roulette where you can earn a free item for your next visit.
Loved the homely Japanese design of this place.
Had the tempura sushi and it was amazing (6 pieces for about $14), price range is affordable for the great quality of food!
Their grilled sticks series is a must try - seems a little bit more healthy and they have a range of vegetarian options for this.
Great experience here. A hole-in-the-wall sort of Izakaya experience. We deviated from the yakitori sticks to order the dishes and were pleasantly surprised. There were heaps of asari, cooked in a Japanese rice and lots of garlic. We were able to order how well done our teriyaki beef was, and opted for medium, which turned out tender and very yummy. Paired with the rice, chawanmushi and miso soup, it was a filling meal.
Nice ambience and cozy place to chill with friends. Remind us of Japan. Clams in sake, fried chicken soft bone and fried bite sized shrimp were pretty good.
Cosy little Japanese restaurant with lovely ambience. The spicy Aburi seafood maki is Super delicious. Fast & good service. House sake goes nicely with the food. Call to reserve as it has limited seating- which adds to the charm.
Great ambience. Cosy izakaya with friendly vibes and decor at a mid-low price point. Feels like a great place to hangout with your mates. However, the food is a disappointment. Cartilage in chicken meatballs. Clams overpowered by fried garlic. Mediocre pork buns. Dry and almost tasteless wasabi pork skewers. Mentaiko scallops were good, just a tad too salty. Hope that the team can review their menu and I’ll be glad to revisit! Good luck.
The mains tastes ok. But overall food is salty, especially the tom yum soup. The tom yum soup literally taste like miso soup with tom yum paste!
This place is highly recommended by me and my partner!! I would like to thank all the staffs working tonight: the kitchen staffs for cooking such delicious food where both of us had a hard time deciding which ones are our favorite 🤗 ; the service staffs for being so nice and attentive to our requests where they also played a birthday song in the background as the candles were being lighted up by the staff ❤️🔥 I would definitely come back here in the future for both its amazing food and service! 💯
Great food and price is cheap. Had special chicken set meal come with pickle, soup and a scoop of ice cream and a glass cold drink. Food takes about 20 minutes if in a rush please take note. Service very good. Will come back for more. 14.90 for this meal.
The chawamushi, tamago mentaiko, salad, sake clams and clam pasta were good but not a fan of the Yakitori. Service staff were friendly.
Very good set lunch menu. Usually crowded, but they are fairly quick at serving. Recommended for a lunch among friends. Way too noisy for any serious business lunch.
Quaint little place with interesting decorations. Family of 4 Adults and 1 kid went there for a casual dinner and some light drinking. We ordered some skewers which were generally good, especially the butabara shioyaki. Garlic fried rice and salmon head was especially good.
Place had overall good vibes, definitely recommend for casual dinner with friends
Great food. Don't go for the ambience. Go for the izakaya. Service was attentive and staff were friendly.
Accidental find. Walked by this restaurant with my friend and we decided to try it.
Had the set lunch which I feel is quite worth it.
We tried the Asari Aglio and the Tori Nabe.
The Aglio was superb! Tori Nabe soup was a bit too salty but the waitress was very responsive, immediately wanted to take it back. My friend decided to just add some hot water.
The ice cream were nice too. Overall well worth it, with nice Japanese song playing in the background.
Love the clam pasta, beef don and their version of tomyum miso soup. Bacon mochi and chicken skin wrapped garlic on the sticks are awesome too!
Their food is not bad. With some sushi, rolls, Don and not forgetting their yakitori. Nice place for beer or sake catch up with friends. As place is not huge, try to go in group of 5 or less.
Great place to chill and have a nice meal! All the food were pretty good, and good vibes overall
Great service and food ! Cost spot for drinks with friends. Love the crowd who sang Happy Birthday for our friend 😍
Nice Izakaya style restaurant near Arab Street serving Japanese food and rice bowls are ver affordable prices. Tried their rice bowl which was delicious. Service was fantastic.
Tasty food! Came here for lunch, they have plenty of choices for their lunch sets. Come with 2 sides and a drink.
Great place for lunch sets, good value, tasty food!
Nice little quaint location. Food is value for money. Set meals comes with sides and drinks.
2nd time here, nice and chill place to be, aside to good food🤤, must try👍.
Really friendly and good service. I did not eat there but my daughter had a nature call and it was very urgent so I had no choice but to ask if we could use their ladies as the shop beside it rejected us even though we bought drink for my daughter a few hour earlier but aniways this shop is so nice to let us use the toilet. When we came in , all the staffs smile even when some of them are eating at that point of time. Such a welcoming place, love their warmth and good service. Thank you !
been visiting for nearly a decade. the food never disappoint us. the japanese curry is really nice. my daughter enjoy the tomago sushi so much. the pasta is still as spicy (u can choose the spiciness level).
The interior is so charming! I loved the crazy and playful decoration and the warm atmosphere with the open kitchen and friendly staff. The menu is very diverse and the prices so reasonable. After eating there several times i would recommend the "Boxes" over the "Sticks" though: the meals are all delicious, but the skewers are a bit average. I highly recommend their salmon teriyaki!
5/5 Was there last Wednesday night with friends. The salmon sashimi was surprisingly fresh and good that we ordered a few more servings. We also tried their Sake 720ml and were impressed. Nice cozy place that reminds me of eating Izakaya in Japan. We will definitely be back.
나름 괜찮아요.
this place is very cozy . if you travel alone must go and enjoy
Found this place on Google, and overall the experience was pleasant! Staff were courteous and understanding, I spilled a bowl of soba seconds after being served and they were kind enough to prepare another new bowl for me as they thought I’d probably not be full without it. Really appreciate that.
Vibes was cool, love the interior design with all the vintage posters and decors, I think the price is reasonable as well for Japanese cuisine, will love to come back soon!
Cozy small place...very fresh good sashimi
Truly a hidden gem in Singapore! We went there during lunch time on a Sunday and was quite hesitant when there was nobody in the restaurant. However, the food was good! I recommend the Negitoro Don, Mentaiko Tamago and Beef Don (the black pepper sauce was really delicious and the beef slices were soft and tender!)
Salmon belly is banger. Salmon skin too. Everything else is perfectly mediocre. Service is amazingly slow. Staff is inattentive, only good thing is they didn't kick us out after 1.5hrs.
Foods are Japanese fusion. It’s tasty and recommended! Restaurant offer free small bites for ordering alcohol!
Pretty good yakitori and snacks. Great for evening beer. Tasty.
Delicious meal, atmosphere with warm lights and casual japan vibes, thank you for the friendly service!
ambience is nice, food is good and prices are reasonable. had the spicy seafood aburi maki, asari clam pasta and tamago mentai, all of which were good! the waitress is super attentive and helpful too!
A small and homely restaurant that serves afforable japanese fusion food. Servers are really friendly and prompt. The unique interior makes one feels that they have left singapore for a moment. Aburi salmon cheese maki and tamago mentai are a must try here. And a cold glass of asahi is a must on a hot stuffy evening.
The food is good! The vibes, love the nostalgic and cosy restaurant... will come again with my friends!

The stall is well decorated.
The taste of food is below average. You can find similar taste in food court. The portion of food is small.
Food is average at best. Ordered the chili soft shell crab and must say the sauce is tasteless and does not really goes well with the soft shell crab.
Wonderful Japanese tapas (izakaya) that's affordable and tasty. The service was great and the owner is really friendly!
Highly recommend trying out their tamago roll.😋
amazing signature buns! Authentic japanese atmosphere (not the best comfort though), efficient service
Food and service was excellent. The braised pork belly bun is delicious. Highly recommended.
Great vibes, delicious food and wonderful company 🍊🥑
Delicious, fresh, authentic Japanese food in a quaint location. One of our favourites and we love trying new things on the menu.
Staff was very helpful! The food was very delicious and value for money 👍🏼 will recommend my friends here
Very nice place, good ambiance and the food is awesome… the staff is very friendly and provide the best service
Love the food here! Nice ambience & songs! Brings back memories!
Amazing food at very good price with great service. Can't mark it down. AND they serve Asahi Black!
Good ambience and food, especially the Yakitori. Friendly staff and reasonable price.
I had an udon with tempura shrimps. And it was amazing! Very cosy and quite traditional looking.
Food taste is average. Prices are on the high side. Service is good.
Great food and ambience. Service staff service is top notch too
Best Japanese cousin in town! Lunch and dinner options, very cozy and amazing staff👌🏻
Pretty good food and good service. Price was reasonable
