Reviews of Chen's
I find the mapo tofu spice level was really strong and aromatic! The mapo tofu don or noodles is worth trying, while the special set that has the ebi Noodles wasn't to my liking, its too dry and not as flavourful.
I like the customer service especially Jacky. He is very welcoming and he is prompt. Will still recommend people to come to this place and try.
I had the pleasure of trying Chen's limited-time Summer Menu, and I must say it's a treat! The Natsu Beer Bundle (2 Pax) (S$39.90++) was a highlight, with the Grilled Beef Yakiniku, Szechwan Mashed Pepper with Century Egg and Eggplants, Crispy Mala Gyoza, and Kirin Beer all coming together in perfect harmony. 👍🏻😋😋
The Danpo Mien Set with noodles coated in a lit blend of Sichuan spice, velvety tofu and topped with an onsen egg for that extra oomph. Each set meal comes with Seasonal Vegetables and Calamansi Juice. 👍🏻😋😋
The Natsu Set (1 Pax) (S$26.90++) offered a delightful combination of Ebi Tempura Negi Ramen, Szechwan Mashed Pepper with Century Egg and Eggplants, and a refreshing Hizashi mocktail. The sides, including the Crispy Tempura Ebi (5pcs) (S$15.90++), were crispy and flavorful. 👍🏻😋
With its authentic Chuka Ryori flavors and comforting dishes, Chen's is a must-visit this summer. Don't miss out on their seasonal delights from June 11th to August 31st, 2024! 🤩🤩
I really enjoyed the mapo tofu - it was spicy and delicious! 💖
The service was great, and I appreciated the free side dish and drink that came with my meal. Highly recommend!
Damage💸 : $14.27
We are pleasantly surprised by the food here. The shop looks quite empty when we came in but mapo toufu and hot and spicy soup were one of the best that I have tasted so far. The toufu used especially was silky smooth and we both loved it. Do try the popcorn chicken which was crispy and tender. The service crew was friendly and introduced us to their signature combo set. We would come again, good comfort food on a rainy day.
Great place for mapo tofu
I have tried the set with half rice and half noodle, best combo for Indecisive ppl like me, so you can try both rice and noodle in one meal.
I first tried the noodle. The sauce of the noodle is not smooth type, its abit like 沙茶酱 texture, which is flavorful and suitable for the noodle.
For the mapo tofu rice, I have selected the spiciest. The flavor of the mapo is on point, despite the spiciest is not too overwhelmed, but I guess it is suitable to enough to enjoy both mapo tofu and the rice.
Overall, its a tasty meal
Loved the ambience and the food! Got the Dan Dan Signature set and was good! Wife and mother tried the sour fish soup and was good too!
A satisfying outing to @chensmapotofu at @thestarvista. I'm not a mala person so I hardly go for szechuan food and mapo tofu and the likes. What attracted me first was that I found out the place serves so called Chuuka Ryouri (中華料理) or Japanese-style Chinese food and it piqued my interest.
I ordered the half and half to try their mapo tofu don and dan dan mien. I loved the dan dan mien, probably the best I have tasted. My niece had the kaisen katayaki (or in zi char style, we call it crispy noodles with seafood sauce haha 🍜 ) and it got her thumb of approval. We also ordered sides - kurobuta tonkatsu and duck karaage. Both were really interesting and they tasted especially good with the side sauce that tasted a bit like mayonnaise but slightly spicy (what is it made with?! wasabi? mentaiko? 🤔 anyhow, so yummy 😄).
Awesome lunch and highly recommended!! 👌
Love their vegetarian mapo noodles and kurobuto katsu fried rice. Their menu have definitely expanded as compared to previous and their duck karaage was good as a side dish as well. The minus point would their side veges which was a little cold and starchy.
Ordered Dan-dan noodle set and Mapo-mien set respectively. Despite using the same type of noodle (or clled Ramen in Mapo-mien menu), the different treatments have made them largely different.
Dan-dan noodles have a rich taste of their gravy in the noodles. Whereas the Mapo-mien has a much more mild taste in the noodle itself, to stress the taste of Mapo Tofu on top. Both dishes are well executed.
The vegetables are served with thick gravy, bringing taste to the refreshingly crunchy green-leafy.
Default drink of calamansi supplements the mala main dishes, with its sweet-and-sour taste neutralising the spiciness when it gets too strong for the eater and quench thirst.
With the rather short menu, it looks like the shop is fairly focused in terms of what it serves. Given its excellent taste in such simple dishes, such focus is certainly not a bad thing in my opinion.
Recently came here with a group of friends. Food was good, and the service by the service crew made the dining experience even better. Special mention to Jack, who was very attentive to our queries and needs, offering assistance with regards to the menu in terms of the shop's specialty, and also checking in with us from time to time ensuring that our orders were all here and that we were having a pleasant time.
We like Chen's because they serve tasty fast food style concept Sze Chuan cuisine, that is very consistent and of very high quality. First time I had Chef's Kentaro's mapo tofu was at the 2 star Michelin Shinsen Hanten and was floored by what amazing mapo tofu tastes like. His casual dining concept is also great. For example, the short grain rice they use is high quality and cooked to perfection, whilst the mapo tofu dish itself uses very soft silken tofu with a balanced kick of the szechuan peppercorns and the other flavors. The tofu and rice/noodles go very well with each other.
We also had the Nasu Don, non spicy eggplant dish as well as sides of Szechuan popcorn chicken Szechuan dumplings. Worthy of the Bib Gourmand in my humble opinion.
Still one of my fav mapo in town. Been missing this since the closing of Jewel branch. Pls open one in the east!
I tried this restaurant in Star Vista because it touted Michelin Bib Gourmand 2019. Place is pleasant and staff were helpful and friendly. Food-wise it was a little disappointing for my taste. I ordered the signature combo which featured both their signature Mapo Don rice and dry Dan Dan Mien. I felt the oiliness of the Mapo Tofu overpowered the flavor while the noodles too salty. I enjoyed the soup so maybe I should have asked for soup Mien instead. The hot vegetable side was nicely seasoned and cooked but it was cold on top and warm at the bottom, which meant it was sitting out in the aircon for a while.
Ordered danpo mian, 1/2 mapo tofu and 1/2 dandan mien set and duck karaage. Both sets came with seasonal vegetable and a soup which was really good as well.
Highly recommend the duck karaage, batter was good and duck isn't dry
A colleague suggested here to celebrate one of our colleagues' birthday. She gave a good review to this place as it had awarded 1 Michelin.
Total 5 of us and we came at the right time to enjoy their 230pm to 530pm promotion. Order a main and comes with a drink and a side. Apart from mapo tofu, they do have other dishes as well for a group who has different liking to food.
Most of them ordered half a half, which is recommended - half rice, half noodles served with mapo tofu. Portions on the whole are quite decent and good to share if both are small we eaters.
I, on the other hand, not exactly a fan of mapo tofu, so I ordered these noodles with grilled beef steak, which was yummy. Noodles were cooked to Al dente, and the beef steak was sliced up that was tender on the inside. Option to have the noodles spicy or non spicy. As I wanted to taste its original, I went for the traditional. It came with an egg and a stalk of xiao bai cai. What I loved overall was the garlic sauce with bits of garlic that elevated the dish
A side dish of popcorn chicken was ordered to share. Nice and crispy that was still moist and tender inside.
Their spiciness has a total of 3 levels - 1 chilli, 2 chilli, and 3 chilli. Take your pick!
I will say it's something different, but to return again on my own, I will most probably give it a miss if I do walk pass. With a group of friends, likely!
Ordered the signature mapotofu and it comes with noodles/ rice. Love the texture of the pulled noodles and it pairs well with the tofu. Had the lowest lvl of spiciness and I thought it’s just nice!
I would travel 45 mins just to get here for mapo tofu. Savoury, spiciness can be adjusted.
Avoid take away. Taste different when its at home. Potions smaller also. Recommend to add one egg!
Mapo tofu is delicious, the medium level is very spicy, and have meatless options
The mapo tofu comes in Don/noodle, and the side dishes were excellent. There are three levels of spiciness for you to choose from.
Their service was excellent too.
Highly recommend and definitely will be back for more.
Ambience and service of this place is excellent. The aircon here is also nice and cool. Food however was not really to my preference. Mala Tofu Signature rice was ok, side dishes were ok as well. Overall a pleasant experience, loved the aircon here though! Star Vista is really a hot place despite it being Singapore’s first naturally cooled mall.
Ordered the signature combo of mapo tofu rice (level 1 spiceness; there’s a total of 3) and dry Dan Dan noodles. Also ordered additional sides with the combo: szechwan popcorn chicken and Szechwan century egg and tofu.
The mapo tofu with rice was delicious! However the dry dan dan noodles was clumped together, and quite dry. Tried my partner’s soup dan dan noodles which was much better than mine.
Sides wise, acceptable. Nothing special.
Will come back for their mapo tofu which is their signature.
The smell in the restaurant was really strong and pungent, so we opted for outside seats. Ordered the half-and-half set with mapo tofu rice and Dan Dan noodles. Somehow wished the mapo tofu came with some minced meat . Staff gave us another bowl of soup when we asked for a top up. Service was quite fast and they gave us an extra set of utensils to share while waiting for the rest of the food. The mushroom fries was served cold though. Otherwise, the food and popcorn chicken was good😋
Greeted and served by polite team of staff. It's been awhile personally for me to experience such an exemplary service standards by staff in the F&B service line. Ordering platform was easy and time saver. Best of all, I ordered a set lunch and it was served swiftly. Enjoyed my lunch with the speedy service, Shoyu Kurobuta Don was tasty especially added with a Mapo Tofu as Appetiser. Certainly value for money and will be back to try their other signature dishes soon!
First experience at Chen’s Mapo Tofu! Always wanted to try. Got the mala char siew with garlic fried rice, completed it with a set of appetizers and drink. I really like the garlic fried rice! Also had to get the Mapo tofu of course - which packed spice/numbness! Hot and sour soup was alright.
This place serves Japanese-style Szechwan food, by the owner of Shisen Hanten (which is indeed from Japan and the taste is amended accordingly; it doesn't pretend to be original Szechwan food cos it isn't) . One of the better mapo tofu we tasted around (L3 is spicy), and the tan tan men was nicely dry and good. All in cost about $24 per pax.
Dandan mien soup has nutty flavour but soup too watery for my liking. Mapo tofu with rice was flavourful with mala. Hot sour soup densed. Overall tasty meals, decent portion. Staff attentive.
Am a fan of eggplant so had to try their braised eggplant over rice. Tasty and not overly salty. Mapo tofu (level 1 spicy) was already quite spicy. Would prefer it with lesser chilli oil. Maybe have an option for chilli oil?
The plant-based mapo mien is quite addictive. This is probably the most delicious vegetarian meal I had for a long time. Be advised that the 酸辣汤 add-on is not vegetarian.
June 2023
The limited Udon tasted ok but a bit expensive. The tonkatsu chahan on the other hand was excellent. Calamansi float cool & refreshing. Despite minimal service, I still quite like it.
This is the second time I had tried their food at this restaurant. First time, I tried their kaisen katayaki, nice crispy noodles. Almost perfect in terms of pairing of ingredients, thought the broth was quite salty for my taste. It would be better to tone down the amount of salt. Tried dan dan mian in my second visit. The noodles were well seasoned with the sichuan styled meat, and the noodle texture was good. The soup on the side helped to wash down the oil so that was a good pairing.
I can’t really take very spicy food so I ordered a spice level 1 mapo tofu rice bowl. At first the reddish hue of the mapo tofu sauce seemed intimidating, but the heat was actually rather pleasant. I liked that the sauce is not really salty compared to other mapo tofu sauces I’ve tried before, and there was some “wok hei” to it. Personally, I find eating mapo tofu with white rice brings out the full flavour of the dish.
Pey Shein was lovely, attended to all our questions with enthusiasm and attended to us proactively. Food was pretty good, albeit on the pricier side.
I had the vegan mapo tofu, and chose the level 2 spice level. Will be back to try level 3 instead as I did not find level 2 spicy. The century egg and tofu cold dish was good too!
Ma po tofu is very delicious. But the spicy level is not truly reflected. Level 2 made me cry 😭 lol. If u r someone who eats medium spicy level for Ma la Xiang Guo, level 2 Ma po tofu is like 大 big spicy level. Be aware of it. Taste wise it is yummy and I will come back and eat level 1 again. 😋
Casual Dining experience with a Punch. High Food Quality vs Value , enjoyable lunch! Noteworthy is the Ponzu Duck Ramen!
My go to place for Malo tofu & hot & sour soup! The alfresco setting is also excellent!
Very awesome food and service. It's not everywhere u can see a menu with Szechuan and Japanese Fusion food. Staff was very friendly and gave veey good recommendations.
Tried the kong bak not the most tender however still good attempt .
Local Szechuan fast food place. Price is a bit on the high side.
The dried Dan Dan Mien is great. Their 'Twice Cooked' Tori Don had alot of fried chicken.
Fast food style Mapo Tofu (order at counter, $12-15 range). Ordered the set with Mapo Tofu ‘don’, Hot and sour soup and drink. Tasty with nice ‘mala’ flavor and Japanese culinary influence.
First time trying. Portion is generous and it tastes good, but I find it a tad expensive to pay $20++ for just tofu on rice, some vegetables and a drink.
Staff are kind and nice. While dinner time, we can’t order set menus.
Decently spicy at level 1 spiciness.
But the soup noodles isnt spicy.
The mapo popcorn chicken was superb.
Tried their new festive bundle for 2. Generally was okay except for the Garlic Misuji Don. The meat was tough and hard to chew. Probably the cooking method is not the best for top blade meat with tough connective tissue. Feels like chewing gum if you tried one. Otherwise, service was excellent from the service staff and food was above expectations.
The dry Dan Dan mian and Szechwan popcorn chicken are highly recommended. Quality here is consistently good
The mapo tofu taste so good. I had level 1 spiciness and it was already spicy enough for me. Mala popcorn chicken was additive too.
The food is flavourful and quite authentic in terms of taste, however I do wish the portion sizes were bigger, as our mapo tofu (for 1-2 pax) did feel a tad bit small
Food is reasonably priced. Food came very quickly upon ordering at table via QR code.
I was surprised they had vegetarian options here. We had the vegetarian katsu noodles, mixed vegetable. They were great.
My favourite outlet as it’s spacious and bright. Food and service are consistent as the other outlet (Downtown). I have no idea how one makes simple dishes such as seasonal vegetables and Mapo tofu so well. Takeaway deals are must-check-out and are always packed so well. Chen’s Mapo Tofu is a brand that I feel does things with love and care, which earns it the same in return :)
Extremely good service from all the staff there. Despite us being rather particular customers as we have an infant along they served us with professionalism. My daughter vomited midway through our meal and instead of showing frustration, the manager and one sweet lady waitress suggested to change our seats and help us to clean up the mess. On top of that they even offered us a new glass of drink as our initial glass of drink got some of the vomit in it. They have shown us upmost professionalism in their services which definitely warrant our compliments and we have no doubt which restaurant to visit again when we are near the premises.
Tried this mapo tofu restuarant for brunch. Took the mapo set and half mapo and noodle set. I was recommended not to add on spicy level as I was first timer. From ordering to food servicing was fast. If you are hungry, this place can give you the food fast enough if you do not wish to eat fast food. I think I can add one level up to my liking. Would like to try other dishes such as sweet and sour pork rice and noodles. Half size if dandan mian was good too
Recommended to come here for awesome mapo tofu and proven right!
Ordered the set meal with half dan dan noodle and half mapo tofu rice with a side of sechuan popcorn chicken.
value for money for the taste and portion.
the dan dan noodles came with a bit of soup, it’s quite nice to finish with a little rice inside the soup after the noodles are finished.
QR ordering and apple pay, makes ordering and payment fuss free and food is served really quick. Great for a quick meal.
Visited the restaurant with my family. Food served was palatable and portion size was just right. The signature combo, Mapo Don and Dan Dan Mien Dry was surprisingly good. It was not very spicy. Service staffs were very attentive and upselling. Overall tasty meals . Recommended to patron again!
The food is really good!! Affordable pricing and friendly staff! 👍🏻 Thanks chef Wei Xuan for the tasty food
The Mapo Tofu has a nice kick but it's a bit too mushy and one dimensional taste. The Dan Dan noodles has a nice al dente and well balanced flavor. The best thing I tried was the hot and sour soup. It's way better than the Mapo Tofu imo and I highly recommend it.
I will probably not be back for the Mapo Tofu or the Dan Dan noodles but I'll definitely be back for the hot and sour soup.
Pickled radish was not pickled and tasted bland - waste of money.
Service was quite good though.
Miso nasu don was decent, mapo don was only ok. Mala was too intense for a single bowl.
Would maybe come here again if there's no line and I'm quite hungry.
Great place to eat vegetarian food with meat substitute! Waiter was very fun and definitely a great commercial. I recommend!
Got the combos for 1/2 mapo don and 1/2 dan dan mian and yakiniku don. Both were amazing and the portion sizes were just right! Thank you for the prompt service for food as well.
Friendly staff, Good service, Food price reasonable.
Been wanting to come and didnt regret doing so! Food is nice esp the mapo tofu!
Clean place and yummy food!
Taste and quality of food is maintained compared to their flagship restaurant shisen kanten at much more affordable prices.
The mala aburi chashu is nice! Mapo rice is spicy !
Good food
Nice food will come again
It was a beautiful store. The children also enjoyed the Chinese bowl. The mapo tofu was spicy but delicious. This is a store I would like to visit again.
The store staff is very kind. There are also non-spicy menu items that children can enjoy. And anyway, the mapo tofu is delicious.
The taste is okay, but the meat is hard to chew
No
Food tasted great!
