Reviews of Karu's Indian Banana Leaf Restaurant
One of the local institutions for authentic Indian food. The dishes are cooked fresh due to high foot traffic. The amount of spices is just right, without over powering. Rice, vegetable dishes and papaddum are free flow.
The fish head curry is one of the signatures.
Passed by this place numerous times in the past when I took 963, but never really paid attention to it. I happened to see someone recommended the place online and also checked with a friend who stays nearby, and decided to give it a try.
We ordered a medium fish head, chicken mysore and paneer and mango lassi. This was a bit too much food for 3 pax and they have the whole fish head instead of halving it like some other places. I really enjoyed the curry but the general flavours were decent.
I strongly recommend to give this place a try.
We had the curry fish head. It was cooked to perfection, Indian style. The dry curry mutton was excellent too. The biryani and the sides were average. Quite pricey. Expected to pay about $30 per pax.
Ok the price and quantity ratio is good. The amount of rice they give you could easily feed 4 pax . Their long survival over at this rather remote location is the testimony of their products. Wide range of Indian food to choose from . Protion is really generous. Taste wise is wholesome spicy and rich. Exotic choice of brayani like chicken liver is on the menu. Good place if you are really hungry.
Unassuming building from the outside.
Excellent Indian cuisine with an extensive range of local styles, sauces and meats.
Serves up authentic and delicious banana leaf Indian cuisine. The curry fish head is exceptionally good here with the quality of fish used. Only draw back is parking here and proximity is subjective. We had :
Mutton tripe & innards
Chicken liver
Curry fish head
Prawn masala
Chicken masala
I would say give the prawns a miss as the meat is a little tough but the rest are all good
Good and Delicious typical I dian Style. From the moment you open the glass door, the SMELL of the curry will turn your stomach upside down. The attraction of authentic food on display will definitely make your choices 👌 😋 doubled. Once you start eating, you will just start thinking of what to add on. The service are excellent, less than 30 seconds, the staff will reach your table. To my surprised, they really did well on hiring many excellent staffs to serve us.
Ordered nasi briyani set meal.
Mutton and chicken was good.
Aroma of rice is there but can be better.
Complimentary side dishes(2types only)-refillable
Good value place for banana leaf rice and naans. Spicy cooking and curry accompanying the carbs. Also, like the fact that I don't have to pay for dhal when I eat naan. Recommended place for Indian food 😋
I’m sorry the pics were taken after we started eating cos they just smelled so good. That moment when you walk into a restaurant and you are hit with the scent of spices wafting around. That’s when you know “I’m going to have a good meal.” The fish head curry was $23 for the small serving good for 2-3 pax. This popular place can be quite crowded.
I must say this is one of the best North Indian cuisine I had tried in Singapore. I was wonder what to have for dinner so I decided to take a long walk to restaurant. It’s a fair huge establishment, during dinner time it is almost full pack of customers, good that there is no queue and seats are available. Upon review, I ordered their signature dish head curry (small), it took them 10 to 15 mins to prepare the dish, biryani cost $4 but it came with free flow of side dish. The fish head curry when served you can already smell the fragrance, the curry is really good not that spicy, I would have soak it with toast bread if I had some with me, but I ordered the butter naan which is closed to toast bread. The fish head curry is good for 2 to 3 person. Service is really good, toilet is soooo clean. Well done. Highly recommended for those who enjoy North Indian cuisine.
Awesome place to hang out with your big bunch of friends. Big enough a restaurant to house many people. More importantly, they serve great Indian Fish head curry! Highly recommended fav of the house : Fish Cutlet! Others include Masala Chicken, Fish tikka, and tamdoori chicken !
The service was great and the plating is pretty darn authentic. Free flow of curry, rice and papadum, which is freshly fried, made it even better. Only gripe is that the meat itself is just pretty normal. Drinks are rather pricy as well.
Love the ghee roast dosai here. Smells amazingly buttery. Food portion for banana leaf meal is too big, but is delicious. Bye bye waistline.
Great meal! $33.80 for this
The spices are mellowed down but still hits the spot. Great for a non spicy eater like myself.
Value for money Indian cuisine in the area. Loved how the staff is always around to top up on the sides. Highly recommend 👍
Good wide selection of curries from seafood, meat and vegetable curries. The fish curry is good here.
First they lay the banana leaf, then they will pour the vege side dish followed by the free flow rice, followed by curry sauce and crackers. frankly speaking its good enough to start eating. the meat were up to expectations. however the tandoori chicken was the bomb. no wonder they have a saperate menu just for tandoori. I would expect chicken to be slightly dry as usually those meat will be hanging by the steel rod. not this one. its hot and juicy. After adding the lime, seriously wonder how chicken can taste this good. I can only respond with a 5 star review
Wow! Even though I don’t know what is the best Indian meal, but I can say here is really good!
You can fulfil your stomach with nice Indian food.
The spiciness is not so strong for me, Japanese, and good to enjoy.
Delicious food and satisfactory customer service.
My family and I decided to order a paratha ,rice meal and dosa
The paratha was crispy and soft. It came with sambar and chutney, but I opted for yogurt instead. The rice meal was delicious. The rice was fluffy and the curries tasted scrumptious. The dosa was fluffy and crispy. It was well seasoned and presented. There is plenty of vegetarian options available here. Overall, a good and affordable place
The biryani is very nicely cooked and not oily at all. The naan and button chicken is awesome. The other chicken dish recommended by the staff was also very good. Overall, I would say this is a highly recommended Indian restaurant. Will definitely go back again.
Great food and customer service. The fish head curry can be further improved by having lesser oil. Easily accessible by MRT.
If you are fan of Indian cuisine, this is the spot you need to going. I had a chicken briyani and it was fantastic. The rice was fragrant. The chicken was tender and fresh. I could not spot a single flaw.
A small Indian Restuarant run by very efficient Staff and serve very nice Food. We arrived at around 11.30am and the Restuarant is almost Full House
This must try curry fish head restaurant is back at the Gombak/Bt Panjang area.
The fish head is tender and curry isn't as hot as to burn away any taste buds. The chicken tikka is done to perfection.
Rice and sides on banana leaf, rustic location, great drinks (try the devine mango lassi or teh halia/ginger tea). What more can you ask for...
Short walk from Bukit Panjang LRT or Hill View Station. Visit Bukit Timah or the old Ford factory and make a day trip out of it.
My wife and I favourite banana leaf rice. It always reminds us of home away from home food. Very authentic southern Indian type of food.
As a local foodie, it’s not uncommon for us to love and talk food everyday. And it’s not uncommon to enjoy the wide plethora of food options available to us.
Last Fri, one of our colleagues recommended this restaurant for an Indian feast- namely South Indian Briyani- a rice dish served with vegetables, curries, meat and seafood. And boy is the food delicious!
Nestled in a nondescript Sime Darby building, few would have guessed that such a good restaurant is situated on the rooftop. The building itself doesn’t attract too much traffic (I suppose) because the ground floor units are not all occupied and there’s no huge advertising promoting about the gem they have up here. I suppose most who’d come would be residents around this building location.
But take the lift to the 5th floor and when the lift doors open, the aroma of the spices hits us and we just follow our noses to find Karu’s Indian Banana Leaf restaurant filled with diners.
Five of us ordered some meat dishes to share- Mysore mutton (favourite), chicken tikka (favourite), prawn tikka (favourite), masala crab, chilli fish (favourite) and they came served with piping hot briyani rice, tumeric lettuce, spiced long beans and papadums. We have options of fish and chicken curry or the appetising Indian spicy gravy- rassum.
I must admit that this is indeed one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve eaten at and it’s no where near the usual suspects I dine at along Little India or Race Course Road.
A fellow colleague who came from India commented that this is one of the most authentic Indian flavours she’s tried here! While she initially chose the Mysore mutton out of concern that the other dishes may not agree with her, she ended up loving the chilli fish the most 😊
While not serving beer before, they’ve only brought in beer to be sold here a couple of weeks ago, upping the attractiveness of this restaurant for those looking for a refreshing Indian beer to wash down some great tasting Indian food!
Great food at reasonable prices with generous servings - given how generous they are with the vegetables, it's a meal that is not only filling but healthy too. Courteous and helpful staff adds to the positive dining experience. If you love Indian food, then this is a must-try.
One of the really tasty Banana Leaf so far. Paid SGD 11.50 for the items in the photo before taxes. Place air con is nice and cold. Portion enough for 2 ppl.
Food : 4.5 / 5
I had the Mutton Biryani which was great. Served on a banana leaf, with free flow papadum, rice, veges and curries (2 options, fish/chicken curry). Enjoyed every part of the dish.
Service : 3.5 / 5
Notorious for being very crowded. If you want prompt service, don't shy away from walking up to any of the staff to ask for assistance.
Cost : 3 / 5
Price wise; I would consider this a little steep for a regular meal. Mutton Biryani + masala tea = SGD 17 after GST. There are cheaper menu options of course, but be prepared to spend at least SGD 10 here for a decent meal
Delicious Indian nasi biryani. My go-to for biryani. Packed mutton and chicken 69. Huge packets of rice.
Always a favourite for me, the food is consistent and tasty all the time. Best Indian food in west area. Their chutneys, sambar and fish curry is awesome.
EXCELLENT place to dine. Good and tasty food. Service at the very best with so much effort to makesure the customer being served at their maximum level of satisfaction. Keep up the good work and vibes
Very good Indian meal with good variety. Free flow of rice, veg and papadom.
The food has always been good n nice. They hv a variety of dishes. Service is fast too. Only language barrier as not all can understand tamil or English. Otherwise ok. Food is pricey but ok. 2 thosai , a chicken thigh, a plate mutton masala with 2 drinks $32.
The food is here is out of this world, despite its humble setting. Totally recommend for anyone who loves Indian cuisine
Prices are a bit steep but indian food are like that I suppose. Their tikka paneer is really good. Also ordered chicken tikka and garlic naan. Costed me S$30.50. Delicious!
Very authentic Indian Curry. The lassi is refreshing. Surely to return for more. 👍👍
Finally! A decent banana leaf curry shop in Bt Timah. Great food in a relax setting. Not too expensive. I had mutton Mysore n chicken masala with briyani rice. Good combination. I can even hop down to cold storage on 2nd floor after a heavy meal.n walk it off. How convenient.
Karu's was a decent experience with a reasonable number of options. We ordered rice that comes with 2 vegetable dishes, mysore mutton, chicken masala and fish cutlet. Out of the meats I thought mysore mutton was quite good, and the other two dishes were ok. I didn't find it to be spicy but it was quite flavorful. My only dissatisfaction was the Bru coffee which was too sweet for my liking.
Good hearty Indian food. Great flavours and reasonable prices.
Delicious fish head curry served on banana leaf with briyani rice. Overall was a good experience.
i cant take spicy, but need to just man up and take the fish curry, worth the trip to toilet bowl! papadam is mwahhh! go there and ask them for like 20pcs of them! will definitely come back!
Aunthentic south Indian food place, varse variety of dishes to choose from. Tatse like home cooked food.
Review: February 2022
Excellent service
Clean & well managed
CURRY Taste is less spicy 😋 & suitable for non Indians to indian dishes.
Spicy & not hot as its in Chinese Mala recipe 😋 .
Excellent Indian food so affordable for such a large group - they were so nice to include curry snd banana leafs! Best food to have at guo da li 😊
Fragrant briyani and best papadom. The fish curry and mutton mysore boast strong flavours. Recommended!
Wah!! Authentic Banana leaf eating experience was a first in Singapore usually will have it in Malaysia, food was 10/10 customer service 10/10 great experience overall
Love the paneer tikka and mutton! Absolute favourite place to get these
Been patronising them for many years for their banana leaf biryani.
Had a fish meals for lunch, not a great meals for the value of money. The ginger milk was a waste for the $1.80 spent.
There's a vast variety of dishes so can try them once whenever pass by the restaurant.
It was lovely dining experience for my family, on 08Sep24
Air-conditioning very welcomed and the food smell when you walk in just builds your appetite. Like that the rice, curry and vegetables are served hot. One of my favourite place for indian food!
The best Indian food in Singapore, yes I said it!
The curries are thick and flavourful. The mutton is tender and well-spiced. The cutlet is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The chicken dishes are all packed full of different spices and tastes. Awesome and always fulfulling!
Thank you. Please do try it out!
The Indian spread displayed looked impressive. But the presentation was present but the taste was average. Portion served was not bad. I don't mind travelling to little India for better taste. The vegetables were not fresh. The mutton was tough and the chicken was fresh but taste average. I will not buy again for the high price.
Very nice banana leave rice, all the additional dishes. Very clean place. Nice teh tarik.
Very good Indian food. We ordered a Mutton and Chicken set, big portions that come with set vegetables. Enjoyed it at home by eating it using my hand. The rice on the banana leaf smells so nice. I had the vegetarian set which was unnecessary because there was already so much rice and vegetables.
Food is good. Have been to this place a few times already with family n relatives. We even catered to their service for birthdays. Our guests liked the food. Service was good but they came in early to collect their trays n displays. Anyway, we are planning to visit the place soon. Can't wait to eat their Fish Head Curry n Mutton Mysore....again.
This is a great place to eat authentic, spicy and flavorful Indian food. They serve a whole gamut of dishes, from a simple Lassi to Chicken Biryani. Food is prepared well and tastes even better than it looks. Usually, the food is accompanied by a friendly server too. Be warned though, as it can get quite crowded at times and noise levels might bump up in the evening hours at the restaurant. In summary, you would not be disappointed by Karu's.
Food was exceptional. Especially the Lamb Rogan and Prawn Masala. However the service could be improved. Staff only informed us that a particular item we ordered was out of stock, only after 20 mins of ordering after everything else had arrived. And when we asked him, he simply just shrugged and said "oh sorry, I forgot ah". This type of service was very annoying as me and my hubby were actually keenly waiting on that item. And the restaurant was not even crowded. Only 3 tables were present.
Date of Post: 03May2020. During the Circuit Breaker Period, I have been to the restaurant taking my deliveries to eat at home. To the Staff and Management, respect you guys and my utmost salute to all of you. The management has maintained very reasonable pricing as compared to other non Indian eateries which I see some as profiteering during the crisis. Kudos!!!
Authentic Indian cuisine especially their full sized fish head. Secret formula curry that goes with fish head - is well balanced mix of 40 spices & will not make you heaty after consumption.
I had a chance to visit Karu's Restaurant at 808 Upper Bukit Timah Rd, Singapore 678144 with a friend. It is a visit after a decade.
Location
Quite accessible by Bus and walking distance of Bukit Panjang LRT. Finding a parking place will be tough if you are driving. I will rate 6 out of 10.
Pricing
Quite OK. Reasonable and affordable. 7 out of 10.
Food
I ate Chicken Beriyani and it was not bad. 6 out of 10.
Service
The waiter who served us was friendly. We were there for late lunch. So not so crowded. 7 out of 10.
Ambiance
Looks old but it is clean. I like it. 6 out of 10.
Conclusion
I will give 6.4 out of 10 as overall. Reserve Recommends this restaurant. You can visit this restaurant if you are staying in the north and west of Singapore. You can enjoy jumbo size appalam for your meals. You can ask for more if you want.
A best place for Fish head curry. This place famous for its tasty Fish curry. Dont miss it.
Can the management change the restaurant photo in this google review. Its showing the Karu's previously located in Sime Darby.
Always a good time here in Karu's. This place is very popular with non-indian patrons too.
Very delicious, home cooked standard kind of Indian cuisine.
Good place, bit crowded during weekends and peak hours. Not like restaurant where freshly cooked food served, typical local Indian food place where food prepared earlier and served. Parota is good here. Bit noisy place but definitely worth trying if you like Indian food. Price is reasonable.
Love this place for the Indian food. The naan especially the cheese naan is really good. Warm and cheesy in the center with a flaky exterior. The chicken masala and butter chicken is good. Thick and creamy. However the unexpected one is the fried fish, meaty and flakey with chunky pieces. Worth it if you like Indian food even the service is good!
Bit bad experience:
1. Asked to wait, though there are many free tables. :)
W.
2. Never order mutton there. So hard !
Other than that, rest of the foods are 😊
Nice family restaurant. Authentic Indian food with quite a number of variety. Sorry didn't take pic though. Price is reasonable.
Tried the fish head curry, naan(garlic, butter, cheese, plain), mutton curry, butter chicken.
It is all good
Good Indian restaurant with a lot of Non veg varieties. Good taste with very interesting menu to choose from. Not too costly to have a good Indian meal.
Foods are awesome and the ambience is nice
a nice indian restaurant tucked away in the top floor of sime darby centre. easily accessible by King Albert Park mrt (just cross the overhead bridge).
fish head curry is delish!
The food is so awesome makes you want to try everything in the restaurant. Very good variety as well. Guarantee Food Coma.
Fish Head Curry is so delicious!
I've been a fan for 20 years.
Price is a bit cheap...but the food is not cheap..it is not a restaurant to go and eat in menuket...people nearby can go and eat.
Roger Josh is very delicious and the staff is very kind
