Reviews of Warong Pak Sapari 5star
I’d just about had it with watery, MSG-laden mee soto and pasty, dour mee rebus in Singapore … until now, that is. Tired of having to plan a trip to JB to satiate my craving, the optimist in me decided to visit Warung Pak Sapari at PLQ Mall. They aren’t new, me having had the occasional dinners and suppers at Adam Road hawker centre, along with the prata, satay and chendol stalls from way back when.
So imagine my surprise when got a whiff of the mee soto stock. If you like spice without the heat, this is exactly it! It is rich with umami, presumably from reduced chicken stock. In fact, it was so charmingly nostalgic and I returned the next day for mee rebus, topped with a pergedil. The base flavour of fermented soy beans came through with soft fullness, redolent with a different set of spices. I had mine with a generous squeeze of lime. If you like a little kick, add their kicap pedas… it adds a wonderfully herbaceous note without overdosing on salt.
I admit that this may not satisfy larger appetites and I’m certainly in no position to defend its Michelin Bib Gourmand title; yet, I did get such a thrill of discovering this gem of Malay cooking doing what it has done for 50 years. That is no mean feat.
So technically I didn't eat here because I wasn't given the opportunity to, so I can't really comment on the food. But I can comment on the service.
I wanted to try this stall at around 7pm on a Monday night, I saw 3-4 people queueing and didn't think much of it. That is until 5-10 minutes later when the employee manning the counter still didn't speak to anyone in front of me.
It was unclear to me what was going on and it was above my pay grade to find out, so I got the chicken rice at the next stall instead. The person in front of me soon also left the queue after a fruitless and even longer wait. Go figure.
I ordered mee soto with the beef brisket & tendon was a bit hard for me to bite. other than these, the noodle was cooked just nice.
Served by Shune with a pleasant smile and mee soto always tastes good!
