Reviews of Woody Family Peranakan Cafe
The menu is unique, tried the tok panjang bulat set with babi pongteh, babi keluak, lemak nangka tiger prawn, chap chye, ayam tempra. Western food is available, beer. The popular onion ring out of stock. Baby rib is good..buffalo wing but too sweet. Spring Chicken taste ok but bit too dry. Will go back to try their giant burger. Pork and mutton satay are good- must order.no aircond but ventilation ok. Lovely surprise for mother's day free rose bandung ice cream and cute bouquet flower. Expect to wait for food bcos of crowd.
Very nice restaurant, it is really a great place for people who want to try unique Peranakan food!
A family restaurant that has been in the North part of SG since 2009.
I think it is the only Peranakan restaurant at North so I have been patronising here for past years.
I can’t said their food are the best but you can have a good makan here.
The food are wonderful. Nasi ulam is so fragrant with all the natural herbs. The petai prawn ikan bilis is ridiciously spicy and freaking good.. babi pongteh omg... soft.. porl belly satay so finger licking good... great place to chill and chat..
We recently dined at Woody cafe, and while the food and atmosphere were absolutely perfect, a few aspects of the service left us disappointed. The dishes were beautifully prepared, and the ambiance made for a delightful evening. However, we were surprised to find that plain water was chargeable, especially considering this is an evening bar. Food portion was quite little as well. This unexpected charge, coupled with the service, lowered our overall experience.
While the owner seemed nice, the female owner wasn't particularly welcoming, which added to our discomfort. Given the price point, we had hoped for a more attentive and friendly service. Unfortunately, this left us unlikely to revisit, despite the fantastic food and setting.
Nice authentic peranakan food.
Worth the trip coming to this restaurant.
For groups of 3 to 5 pax, order their set meal. The set meals allows you to try 4 to 5 dishes.
The lunch was tasty and well portioned. Sam and Jenny, the owners, are incredibly kind and accommodating. By the way, please be aware that pets are no longer welcome in the restaurant.
Was lunching here, but realised it wasn't the best afternoon plan. It was warm and humid as the non AC restaurant basked in the sun.
We ordered the pork keluak and nanka prawns, quite tasty. Price was on the higher side.
Nice place n should be perfect for a beer in the evenings when the sun is down.
Been there a few times, price is too expensive. That my personal experiences. Was there yesterday 3 April 2021. Beer price sky rocket! Good at night , day time the sofa and decoration look very run down. Night time , can't really tell . Enjoy but if you can afford $15 for a pint of 🍺. 🤭
Tried the food using a delivery service. Ordered Babi Pongteh, Rendang Beef Ribeye, and Mutton Satay. The Babi Pongteh looked different from most, usually it is darker colored but this version is whiter. The pork belly they used is a little too fatty for my liking, but regardless, it taste pretty good, very flavorful. The Beef Rendang is my favorite. Has a very spicy kick, and meat is tender. Full of spice flavor. Mutton Satay flavor is good though I find the texture a little tough. Overall, the price is quite steep, but once in a while it's OK for the good food.
Intriguing deco throughout the cafe by the owners. This used to be a row of post-war shophouse but most shops (including the neighbouring unit which also used to be a restaurant) have been redeveloped into residential houses. It’s fortunate that this corner lot continue to operate as a family-run cafe. The unique ambience attracts many customers from across the island. Didn’t order much this time but the Peranakan dishes are well prepared. Too bad the tables along the side are reserved for smoking area, would have been nice to dine there as it’s cooler there during noon.
Not too bad. Eggs and burgers looked appetising. A lot of beer-doused cuisine especially with their Western offerings, so take care if you're driving. The sambal chinchalok fried rice was dope, and the sambal belachan they gave with the nasi ulam was very spicy, so taste before dabbing otherwise you'll ruin your meal HAHA
The drinks are unfortunately a tad bit too overpriced ($3.5 per can of soft drink), and they run by reservations on weekends, so take care and book ahead to avoid disappointment from driving there and walking in to find out you can't have a seat there.
Remote cafe on a remote road in the remotest part of town. A very nice place to sit and drink in the night. They have a huge selection of beers, wines, sojus, cocktails, and drinks. Food is quite good. Price is $$$ though. For me the decorative lights all around blinking all the time was very disturbing. The owners are friendly and nice. area,
Food is well prepared. Juicy prawns and spicy chili. Food takes time to serve as the food is prepared sincerely.
Chilli is authentically spicy, stone mortar grind by hand.
Yes, yes, traditional stone mortar and pestle grind.
Good Peranakan food takes time to prepare.
Super yummy food. Best Sabah Peranankan food! The place is a little hot 🥵
Slow serving
Very polite
Good food
Don't try if cannot wait.
Be prepared to wait for abit for the service and food, overall prawn were fresh and food were flavourful. Not very crowded on a sat night. Chill and nice place
Found a pernakan food in an interesting place.
The food is spicy, like woohoo kind but are very delicious. Very flavourful too.
Need tissue while eating. Hahaha.
Will come back again
Wow.... such a place exist in this ulu neighbourhood. Coming into this cafe, instantly make you feel like you have been teleported to a cosy hangout by the beach in Bali. Somehow life just slows down here... erm... actually including the waiting time for the food. I really wanted to give it a 5 star review for the homely feeling of the cafe and the decent tasting nyonya food but the mozzie and waiting time for the food just didn't do it for me. Oh, forgot to mention that the cream soda was really nice because it wasn't too sweet!
First time visiting after receiving good reviews from my husband's friends. We came not knowing what to expect but was immediately greeted by the friendly staff and beautiful laid back environment. Feels like being out of Singapore. We ordered a sampler set for two and are very impressed with the taste of the Peranakan food!! Really delicious and spicy, we finished everything. So far all the dishes we tried are good and particularly worthy of mention is the ribeye beef rendang and the spicy prawns with eggplant. Do order a few non spicy dishes to put out the fire🔥 😆
A love hate relationship on this establishment. Have been visiting the restaurant quite frequently now. The place has a quirky decoration style which in a way brings some comfort to people who just want a casual night out and do not need to worry how badly dressed you can be. Food choices are plenty and the cuisines are a mix of asian western, but it's specialties are in peranakan. Choices of drinks are a lot too especially beers. Nestled in a landed property area, at night it is pretty quiet and tranquil.
However, do not expect the restaurant to be friendly in service because, I do not know why either. They will start shutting down electricity and go dark on some spots at 9pm, taking away table decorations while you are still having a meal. They closes at 11pm. It doesn't feel very welcoming, though probably the owners just want to have an early rest.
Definitely recommend laksa prawn pasta and their chicken satay! Beef rendang and buffalo chicken wings are nice with a lil spicy. Will come back again
I have been going to Woody's for the last 14 years . Always a wonderful experience. Great food, Great atmosphere and great conversations with Auntie Jenny the owner and Chef.
Do expect some waiting time for the food but it's all worth it when you take that first bite ;)
Great for family, big groups or simple date night.
Best peranakan food ever ever ever! Owners are so warm by the way!
It's a house restaurant fitted with a plastic tentage and water-cooled on a warm day.
The taste of Peranakan and western food & dessert was ok but it took ages to serve simple dessert and a simple pasta and a Hawaiian pizza.
Overall, other than the ok taste of food, the experience was just satisfactory, and there were limited free parking alongside the back of some landed properties opposite this house restaurant. The total price for 4 adults, with 3 small eaters is considered expensive vs other restaurants of the similar size and offerings.
Visited the place on a Monday night. Not many diners around. The restaurant is spacious and cosy, suitable for family gathering. Most importantly the food serves are really delicious.
Located near Sembawang park, Woody family cafe serves authentic peranakan food together with some western dishes.
Went with my family of 3. Atmosphere was cozy, staff were friendly. Ordered a fried rice, a laksa pasta and a chicken set. Fried rice serving was a bit small but still ok. Laksa pasta was good. However, chicken set did not come after around a 30 minutes wait. We asked after 30 mins but still nothing. Cancelled the chicken and left after 40 minutes. If they allowed a cancellation, most likely means that they haven't even started cooking the chicken yet. Also, the food was quite overpriced. I find $1.20 for a glass of water that cannot be refilled very overpriced.
Nice cozy concept! The cafe is converted from a landed property. Great place for friends and family gathering... Wide range of local food (there are western food options too)
Came here for mother's day celebration. But had to wait quite a while due to over capacity. Food was alright 😀
This out of space restaurant is sooo unique....a most to see and try. Vast menu with Peranakan inspired cuisine. Give it a try after a walk on the nearby Sembawang beach.
Not sure how authentic is the food but it is okay for us
Not so idea
1. It was previously pet friendly until someone complained, so place NO LONGER WELCOME PETs"
2. Parking, because resturant is at a landed home, there is no public parking nearby
3. The wait, we placed our order at 740pm, there was a big group already eating, then table of 2, 3 and 4, including us total 8 tables (some also eating already) however our food only served at 830pm. Our satay served much much later, because of the wait, we dare not order anything else
Good
1. We like the vintage decor
2. Friendly staffs, including business owners, make us feel welcomed
3. Food tasted okay, we actually like 1,2 dishes
Not so sure
Based on the staff recommendation, we ordered their promotion set meal including 2 drinks + 6 sticks of satay + 1 fried rice + 1 blue flower tea, total $136, not sure if it reasonable or expensive
Overall
Well, we are not fan of perankan food, so properly we wont be back so soon 🙏
Food is decent, sambal fried rice is spicy which is good!
Waiting time is around 25-30mins during weekends
Absolutely phenomenal food! The journey to this place is worth it. It is a haven from the busy city life we live in Singapore. Portions are generous and flavours pack a punch.
Came across this cafe tucked at a corner of the private estate after our zoo outing.. the food is yummy of restaurant standard! Love the pork satay! Juice and not overcooked. Very quiet and nice place to chill. Wide selection of dishes and drinks too! Family friendly with kids menu. Cooling alfresco ambience. Will come again next time!
It’s lovely traditional peranakan restaurant. Don’t be deceived by its outlook, food and interior design is very comfortable!
Sadly, its no longer a pet friendly restaurant
My husband took me there for a surprise. Now ended up having to wait and wait at the entrance without getting seated and my feet are very sore. What a surprise indeed. But the saving grace is the food is really nice. Love the spicy chicken wings and the Peranakan set is worth the money.
Amazing place with great atmosphere and food. Although the wait time may be a little long, the wait is worth it. The Laksa Burger was delicious and juicy with fluffy and crispy fries with it. 100% worth it
Very nice & quiet place for dinner.
The atmosphere was good.
Decoration was great.
It will be better if the lighting can be slightly brighter.
Place is not near to bus stop or MRT.
And there is no public carpark.
Nice chill cosy place nestled inside Sembawang for a good perenakan meal and alcohol as well. Prices are above average.
A very unique hideout in Singapore.
Good ambience, some dishes was spicier than expected.
A little pricey, but for a family cafe at that location... 🤷🏻♂️ oh well
Great Food! Very nice decorations. Must try!
Food quite nice and prices reasonable
It tastes good and I'm very satisfied, although it's a little spicy because I don't eat spicy food🤭🤭🤭, but if you like spicy food, you can try it. 👍👍👍
The environment is good and the food is OK, but the price is a bit high
Great sambal belachan. Great satay.
Nice Peranakan Food!
